Lost IPTC Info

I needed larger storage so I installed several internal HD's to cover future growth. After "upgrading" to CS4 and copying everything over, I seem to have lost a lot, not all, IPTC data on my images. Or should I say, more accurately, I lost all IPTC data on many images, not on all images. Metadata involving photo technicals are all still there, just not keywords and such.
Is there any way to get it back?
Thanks
Petroffski

By COPYING I mean dragging, from a mirrored RAID, 750 GB worth of digital photofiles, mostly modified RAW images, to an internal 1.5 TB HD and 300 GB worth of scans with IPTC data attached to another 1.5 TB internal HD. All of these RAW images and scans had IPTC metadata added as XMP sidecar files. All looked well. The raid was broken down to be used as backup disks and only after that, found out that probably half of the thousands of images had ALL of the XMP data files missing. All that they had was as-shot information, no keywords. XMP files were gone.
Surely something happened during the drag and copy but that is not my concern (well maybe a little). I do have all of these images and XMP files backed up. I was hoping to avoid recopying these files from the backup.
I just wanted to know if there is some place that the XMP files might have gone. I've since learned that if they are not with the file, they do not exist any more. If I'm wrong about this let me know as at least 20 hours of copying could be cut short. Otherwise I am now (shoulda done this in the first place!!) using my backup software to copy the pics and XMPs to their respective HD's.
Thanks-
Petroffski

    - Transfer iTunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer othe music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Best iPod to PC
    - Create a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod to the computer.  Right click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up.
    - Restore the iPod from thzt backup and sync a necessary.

  • HT4059 I recently lost all info on my iPad, luckily I had recently backed up on iTunes.  We I restored it my iBooks didn't bring my files.  I have the properly labeled files in the collections, just no files.  How do I get these?

I recentlyl lost all info on my iPad, luckily I had recently backed up on iTunes.  When I performed the restore, everything came accross except my iBooks pages.  I have the proper files in my collections, but the information in the files is not showing up.
How do I get this lost information back?

A backup doesn't contain any of your iTunes downloads or the contents of the Music, Videos or iBooks apps. If they are ibooks and they are still in the store then you should be able to redownload them via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app. If they are PDFs and/or epubs from other sources then do you have copies of them anywhere e.g. are they in the Books part of your computer's iTunes library or elsewhere on your computer ?

  • Lightroom 4.4 crashed on Windows 7 Laptop, lost catalog info, won't import half my images.

Lightroom 4.4 crashed on Windows 7 Laptop today, lost catalog info, won't import half my images.
Not only is LR messed up, it deleted my day's shooting. Can't believe that.
Now it won't import (i.e. re-import) half my files.
Imported half, but had errors importing rest.
    Corrupt catalog?
When I try to import the folders, it recognizes that they are in the catalog (I have "don't import duplicates" turned on).
After running through all the folders, it says, "Nothing to Import."
    Any help?
    Best,
    Peter

    Thanks dj_paige.
I installed a plugin, coincidence makes me thinks this might have cause a LR4.4 crash.
After rebooting my windows 7 laptop, LR had lost record of half my directories on the external drive, as seen in Library Module.
In Windows Explorer, the folders and images are still there.
I tried recovering the lost folder references in LR by doing an import on the external hard drive again.
It took about a half hour to run.
There was a report screen at the end of the process that said that LR was unable to import something like 1500 images.
I did not save the report screen. Maybe it is part of a log file somewhere to give you what it exactly said?
I do not profess to understand how catalogues work under the covers.
I only use one catalog at this point.
My guess is at this point I should de-commission the catalog (whatever it takes to do that - delete it, etc.) and just do a new, fresh import on my images.
I don't feel I lose anthing this way - I can't see where I would lose anything important. About 5-10% of the RAW images were processed and exported to jpg, just for web use for casual viewing. The jpg's are all still on the external hard drive.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Peter

  • Lost Song Info

    OK, here's my situation:
I have Windows XP. I realised that no album artwork was showing on my iPod nano, even though it was on iTunes (most up-to-date version). This was because the error with the "Chkdsk" thing kept appearing. After I ran that, nothing changed, but after I'd changed some setting somwhere, I thought I'd fixed the problem. But I had to stop partway through the operation so only some of it came up on the iPod.
However, when I went back to it, I somehow accidentally deleted all song info (artist, album, album artwork etc) and now all that appears on both the iPod and iTunes is the song title. This is the case in "iPod", "Purchased" and "Library" sections. Nor is it on my hard drive.
Is there an easy way to retrieve all lost song info quickly and easily?

How many songs are you talking about? You can enter the information yourself for each one if you're up to it. Right click on the song file, then choose get info. On the second tab "info" where everything is probably showing up unknown, you can type in the information. I'm sorry I really don't know of another way to do this if the program can't ID the song to search the internet for details.
Are these whole albums or individual songs? If they're albums, you could burn them to a CD and then rip them into Windows Media Player. You'll get an option to search for the album info. online before you rip the CD. You can enter the artist or album name and let Windows Media Player find the correct song details, then Windows Media Player will enter the info into all of the columns for you. Once you have these albums ripped in Media Player, you can re-import them into iTunes and the tags will be there. (Just make sure you rip using mp3 so you don't have to go through a conversion process to bring them into iTunes.) Album art doesn't transfer from Windows Media Player to iTunes. You'll have to hand add this.
I don't rip in iTunes so I don't know how the program tags unknown albums. If iTunes can search for and add tag information to unknown albums--skip the Windows Media Player step and just re-rip everything in iTunes.

  • Importing .xmp sidecar file doesn't populate IPTC info??

Good evening everyone.  I've been trying to import .xmp files alongside some of my old movies to save me from having to retype the IPTC info such as location, etc.  I have a folder which contains the .mov file I want to import, along with the .xmp file of the exact same name.  I thought this was automatic (at least from my perspective), put I guess not?  The .mov file imports just fine, but Aperture doesn't seem to populate any of the metadata fields with any info from the .xmp file.  I've tried this with different videos/xmp sidecar files with no luck.  Am I stuck re-entering all the metadata by hand?  I really don't have much info, but I have several hundred files I'm trying to re-import, so it could be a long week.  In case it helps, here's the xmp sidecar file that was created when I used iView Media Pro software pre-Aperture:

The Photoshop and/or Bridge forums would be more likely places to get answers to your questions. This forum is inhabited more by programmer types interested in implementing the XMP specification in applications we write.
I'd expect CS2 to ignore CS1 panels so I doubt that's the issue. Panels don't interfere with each other--they just offer different views of the data. In any case, move the extra panels to your desktop and see what happens.
As far as I know, all you need to do on the Mac is drag the CS1 application folder to the trash to uninstall it.

  • Recent Aperture Update Not Exporting IPTC Info?

Has anyone else noticed that when exporting an image from the most recent update of Aperture, the exported image/jpeg no longer contains any of your IPTC Metadata? Facebook sees none of the captions nor does WordPress. These two issues alerted me to check info etc. from within Preiew and nothing is showing up. Nada, zilch, zero. No copyright info. no photog info, nothing. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but can others check for Metadata IPTC info on export and report back? Thanks.

Problem partially solved but still wondering about the PNG issue.
    Jim,
PNG is a great lossless image format, but afaik, there is no standard how to embed metadata in png files.

  • IPTC Info in Metadata Boxes?

When you add a new metadata box to page, is it possible to have that metadata box populate itself with the City/Country IPTC info?
I can't seem to find a way to change (add/remove) the metadata fields in the drop down menu.
I'm trying to make a contact sheet that includes the City and Country where each photo was shot.
    Thank you,
    Kenny

The metadata is recorded by the camera. Aperture simply reads what data the camera recorded. I'd suggest you update your camera firmware, if an update is available. My experience with this is that the camera body manufacturer's lenses are often much more reliably identified.
Regardless, not all lens information is available for all cameras; it's currently a hit-and-miss technology.
I'd say don't worry about it much.

  • Lost registration info

I have a problem. In a recent move I have lost my FCP original disks (which isn't a huge problem since I have the software backed up) but when I copied all of my software from an old machine to my new MacBook Pro the FCP became unregistered and I can't find the number anywhere. (I usually save a copy of the numbers on my hard disk...don't know why this one is missing).
Question: Is there any place on Apple's site to find all registered software (and hardware for that matter) and the registration (or activation) info?
    Rick

Are you saying that you simply copied the apps from one machine to the other? It's unlikely that you'll get the apps working properly without a clean reinstall anyway.

  • Lost all info on ipod

    Hi
My daughter updated to the new 5.1 software on her ipod touch and she lost all her info?  can anyone help?

At the start of the update process iTunes asked her if she wanted to make a backup. Then at the end of the update it asked her if she wanted to restore from the backup. Unless she responded Yes to both, the data was not transferred.
If she did make a backup, but did not restore from it, you can still retrieve it by right-clicking on the iPod name in the Devices list and selecting to restore from the backup.
Purchases from iTunes Store should be on the computer normally used to sync the iPod to (or can be re-downloaded for free). Photos, addresses, etc., should also exist on the computer, if regularly synced. If so, you can sync them again to the iPod.

  • Lost iTunes Info

On March 14th 2006 as I was trying to download a screen saver from apple when my computer went on the fritz. I relaunched the Finder and to my horror my computer had been reset to the factory settings. Thankfulyl no data was gone but getting everything back to normal took a long time. When I imported all my iTunes back in all the information (play counts, last played, date added) was all gone. I assume now the 3.5 years later and with a new computer that is probably not coming back. But is there any way to find out when exactly my music was ripped? Or is that lost in time forever?

You could go look at the file info in the Finder to see the creation date. That is the best that you can do.
If you know about when you put groups of files into iTunes you can change your Mac date and time to the previous date and then add those files back into iTunes. iTunes looks at your current system clock to populate the Date Added column.
if no data was lost then why did you have to import all you tunes again?
