Lost ITunes library in Windows XP Home Edition

Hi:
It took close to 10 hours reconverting all my music from an external hard drive to a new installation of ITunes on a new laptop so I can put the music on a new IPod. All the music got converted--my husband and I both saw it. Then I went to my husband's desktop and the music was not in his ITunes library--so I changed the folder to look in--still no luck. When I returned to my desktop, the music was gone!! Can someone please help me--I cannot see the music anywhere. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ITunes with no luck. Don't know what the heck is going on

The faster way would be to just move the files from the 'My Pictures' folder into the 'My Music' folder. Then just do a 'FIle=>Add Folder'. No need to delete them. Too late now...
After you convert the files to an acceptable iTunes form, make sure you know where they are located on the PC.
Here's some general info on iTunes and its music organization:
iTunes operates as a database of information for your music files. The actual music files are stored on your PC, not within iTunes. iTunes keeps absolute references of the music file location and other information in its database file. This allows iTunes to use music files from any location on the PC: different directories/folders on the main HD, another internal drive, an external drive, or a network drive (or any combination of the above). Each song reference has a specific and hardcoded path so iTunes can find and play (or sync) it. Move the file, change the path, re-map the drive it is on, and iTunes will lose the file (giving you the '!' of a ‘Broken Link’). Lose, move or corrupt the ‘iTunes Music.itl’ file and your complete Library will ‘vanish’.
If you delete, corrupt, or otherwise lose your ‘iTunes Library.itl’ file, you will end up with a ‘blank’ Library within iTunes. Nine time out of ten, your underlying music files are still on the PC. They can be ‘re-Added’ via the File==>Add Folder/File menu command, but you will lose some of the music meta-data. Recovering your Library via backup copies of the iTunes database file, or from importing the XML file is always preferable.
The iTunes music information (meta-data) is stored in two places: the actual individual song files themselves, and the iTunes Library database file (‘iTunes Library.itl’). There is a corresponding XML file that is created by iTunes, but not directly used. See: What are the iTunes Library files?.
Song attributes stored directly in each music file are as follows: Artist, Album, Song Title, Year, Comments, Compilation tag, Lyrics, Genre , Grouping, Composer, BPM, Album Artwork, Bit Rate & Kind (Both not tags - inherent to the file itself).
Song attributes stored in the iTunes Library database file only are: Playlists, Ratings, Play Count, Last Played, Date Added, Date Modified, Equalizer, Volume Adjustment.
Changing (or designating) the 'iTunes Music folder' location in the Preferences does not instruct iTunes where to look for existing songs it currently knows about. It directs iTunes where to store any new songs it Imports, or 'Adds' and copies to its Library organization (if that attribute is selected). This is an important distinction.

  • Itunes 7.1.1. and Windows Vista Home Edition

Hi there. I have a new PC from HP model T3765.it and I am NOT able to use my iPod nor to install iTunes for more than two months: my PC says "you have to repair iTunes to make it working with Windows Vista". I followed the instructions (Control Panel --> Programs --> iTunes --> repair) but no result. My PC has Windows Vista Home Edition. Does anyone know what to do? Is there a way to sort this out or do I have to wait for a new iTunes release?
    Thanks, Giacomo

Can anyone help me with instructions to restore the Ipod to a back level? I have searched the discussions but haven't found a method. I have downloaded 1.2.1 but Itunes wants to check for an update and won't let me get past that point.

  • How may I eliminate all of iTunes from Windows XP Home Edition before making a "clean" installation of iTunes?

Hello.  I found that in Windows XP Home Edition that I had two subdirectories of iTunes: C:\Program Files\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes(2).  I assume this situation has arisen by me not properly updating iTunes in the past.  When it came time to update iTunes from one of the version 10.3s to version 10.4 of iTunes, I tried to do something about the pair of iTunes subdirectories.  Via Start, Control Panel, and Add or Remove Programs I "Remove"d the only listing of iTunes; that is iTunes(2) was not listed there.  But afterwards C:\Program Files\iTunes(2) still existed, as viewed in the program Windows Explorer.  Next while offline I installed iTunes10.4 by running the downloaded file iTunesSetup(4).exe in my case.  I chose C:\Program Files\iTunes(2) as the directory for installation.  Next I uninstalled iTunes via Add or Revmove Programs.  The directory C:\Program Files\iTunes(2) then still existed.  I need an iTunes cleanup utility, if there is one, or else a way to eliminate all vestiges of iTunes, including registry entries, from my Windows XP Home Edition.  [I think this situation is the opposite of a situation in which the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (WICU) would apply.  I think the WICU is useful when a program is visible by name in the Windows Add or Remove Programs list, but can't be removed by clicking on "Remove" in that list.]  [I also noticed the directory C:\Program Files\iPod(2).  Is that directory associated with iTunes(2)?]  After that I would hope that a fresh offline installation of iTunes 10.4 to my computer's hard-disk drive would result in only C:\Program Files\iTunes among iTunes subdirectories in C:\Program Files when viewed in Windows Explorer.  Please inform me how to reach this goal.  Thanks.

I'd also dig down into where your home user account holds temp files, as well as application preferences and support. I just know Vista began using \myaccount\AppData and multiple locations under there.
Apple leaves behind every past installer cache, support (imporant to get rid of that also).
The first thing I do (no iPod etc) is uninstall Bonjour and disable iPod and MobileMe.
Windows Uninstaller Cleanup Utility also use to be a must for stubborn "partially installed" apps.
When you are done, CCleaner and Registry.
Another place to clean is %TEMP% (may be different in XP).

I have a Windows XP Home Edition computer.   I recently attempted to upgrade iTunes to v10.7.  It loaded and installed OK, but now it won't run.  When I try to launch it, it gets aborted by the windows Data Execution Prevention software.  Any ideas?

Yes, this did solve the problem.  But I had some trouble updating QuickTime.  It failed, with the installer complaining that it did not have the required permissions to install the files it needed in the program directory.  I got it to work by telling it to install the files to another directory.  All seems well now - Thanks!

  • Is iTunes 11.1.0 compatible with Windows XP Home Edition?

I am trying to update my iTunes to 11.1.0, but get a Windows error message that says it might not be compatible with Windows XP (Home Edition).  I've never had this problem updating iTunes before.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Has XP been updated to Service Pack 2? Right-click Computer on your desktop or in the start menu and click Properties. Visit Windows/Microsoft Update and install the service pack if needed, otherwise ignore the error and continue.

  • Transferred itunes library from Windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. plugged in 3rd gen Ipod. Ipod icon appears along with playlists, music etc. Songs are grayed out and won't play. Please help!

I recently transferred itunes library from windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. The transfer was successful, however when I plug my 3rd gen Ipod Nano into the new PC, the Ipod icon appears along with the music, playlists, etc. The songs are shown but are 'grayed out' and wont play or sync. The 'Devices & Printers' window in new PC shows icon for Ipod driver & is OK. The icon for the Ipod appears but depicts a delta shaped warning icon that states that the Ipod is'not operating properly'. Tried troubleshooting. The troubleshooting message states the the Ipod is 'disconnecting'. Can you help me with this problem?

Then, I dropped the entire itunes file from the old PC (XP) into an empty external drive.
That "itunes file from the old PC"?  Is that the iTunes folder, from the old PC, that was in the user home folder's Music folder?
All of the library, playlists, etc. from the ipod as they always have been are shown, by they are 'grayed out' and will not open or play.
That's on the iPod, correct?  Are all of your old playlists in iTunes, from the old PC, still there in iTunes on the new PC?  Are the songs in iTunes still playable?
This document provides the steps to transfer a complete iTunes library between two computers.  See the section called External drive.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - Apple Support
There are many steps, but this is a summary.  (1) On the old PC, consolidate all of your iTunes data into the iTunes folder.  (2) Copy this iTunes folder to the external drive.  (3) On the new PC (that has iTunes installed but NOT running), replace its existing iTunes folder with the one from the old PC (on the external drive).  When you run iTunes, it uses the iTunes folder from the old PC, and it should look like iTunes on the old PC (with all the playlists, ratings, play count, etc.), and your iPod will see the iTunes library as the same iTunes library (because it is the same library).
If you did something different, and the old PC is still accessible, you may want to try it using the method from the linked document.

  • Oracle 8i for Windows XP Home Edition

Could someone please advise which is the correct download version of Oracle 8i to use with Windows XP Home Edition?

As far as I know, your need XP Professional.
On top of that, you'd better download Oracle 9i.
Let me explain: the symcjit.dll library in Oracle 8.1.5 did not work on XP w/Pentium IV. You had to go to symantec.com and download the proper JDK, extract symcjit.dll from it and replace the original symcjit.dll (that came on the Oracle CD or in the download) with the new symcjit.dll
This means that you have to copy the CD to disk, unzip it and replace symcjit.dll in the unzipped distribution.
I do not know if this was fixed in 8.1.7, but 9i installs beautifully on XP Professional, Pentium IV w/512MB RAM.
Could someone please advise which is the correct download version of Oracle 8i to use with Windows XP Home Edition?

  • Installation 10g on Windows XP Home Edition

When I try to install 10g on my Windows XP Home Edition, I get a error message, "oui.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." Whats that all about?

Windows XP Home is not a supported platform for Oracle. I have heard some people have been able to get it to work but usually not without a lot of tinkering. General rule of thumb -- Windows anything Home edition is not supported by Oracle. My suggestion is if you have the disk space, install VMware and put a Linux distro like Centos in it and install Oracle on that. Or go the dual boot route.

  • Error message downloading j2se 1.5.0 on windows XP home edition (SP2)

    Hello:
I am getting the following error message attempting to install the j2se 5.0 on my windows XP home edition (SP2):
    "Error JavaTM installer
The installer cannot continue because the files necessary for installation are unavailable. If trying to install a beta or older version please check http://java.sun.com/j2se to determine if it is still supported. If so please try installing at a later time as these file might be only temporarily unavailable."
    There is a bug report:
    Bug ID: 6237992
Tested Bundle: 5.0u2_b09 JDK iftw on staging site
    http://webwork.sfbay/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
    Tested O/S: XP-Home (sp2)
    Problem:
The installer throws error messages. I tried on three different
XP-Home (sp2) machines in our lab. It throws error message the very first or second time and after that, it seems to work fine.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1) On XP-Home(sp2) machine, try to download and install the JDK iftw bundle from
    http://webwork.sfbay/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
    2) During the installation the first or second time, one of the following messages thrown:
    A) "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and than you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package"
    B) Error - Java Installer
"This installer cannot continue because the files necessary for installation are unavailable. If trying to install a beta or older version, please check http://java.sun.com/j2se to determine if it is still supported. If so, please try installing at a later time, as these files might be only temporary unavailable"
This problem seems to occur on XP-Home(sp2). When error message pops up, keep trying it, it 's eventually OK. It may confuse consumers at the first two times.
    xxxxx@xxxxx 2005-03-09 05:11:47 GMT"
I have tried the downloading five times to no avail, both by double clicking, and using the windows run utility. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I am getting the same error when opening the J2se Development Kit 5.0 Update 8 after I press the Run button. ( "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and than you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package").
    Is there a solution ?

  • Can I use my Mac OS iTunes Library with Windows XP under Boot Camp?

Hello. I have a Mac Pro with two drives, a 1TB Mac OS 10.5 drive and a 500GB Windows XP drive. I have a large iTunes library on my Mac OS drive, and I'd like to be able to access it when I'm using XP. I downloaded MacDrive hoping that I'd be able to use the same iTunes library, but I'm stuck as to what to do now. Anyone know if this is possible, and how I can get it to work?

I have my entire iTunes library shared between Mac OS X 10.5.2 and XP (aka. Media Center 2005).
I use an HFS+ volume accessed via MacDrive. In my case I started off with the Windows iTunes as the master (and use it to rip all my CDs). I then set the Mac side running iTunes to use the same iTunes folder as specified in Windows (this is done in Advanced Preferences). I also replaced the Mac "iTunes Music Library.xml" and "iTunes Library" file (both stored in /Users/username/Music/iTunes) with aliases pointing to "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml" and "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl" respectively.
Note: I suspect the Mac side will need write access to these two files, and as I used FAT32 for the Windows volume the Mac does have write access. However there are now at least two ways for the Mac to get write access to NTFS volumes (MacFuse being one). It may also be possible to tell iTunes to store these files themselves in a common location (not tried that).
While it is not relevant to your query, I have also managed to share my entire iTunes library with Windows Media Player (and therefore also to Media Center 2005). All my music is in Apple Lossless format and I have a directshow filter for WMP to let it play Apple Lossless (or unprotected AAC). I also have a plugin installed to let WMP read the meta tags in MPEG4 (i.e. AAC and Apple Lossless) files.
When I switch from Windows to Mac and run iTunes it does a brief rebuild, when I switch from Mac to Windows it again does a brief rebuild and the result is that the list of music in iTunes on both operating systems is always the same and successfully accesses the same music files on the shared volume. I rebooted back in to Mac OS X at the weekend and was happily accessing the music in Front Row.
