Lost iTunes on my computer due to hard drive crash, what happens when I sysnch ith iPod?

Hi--
I lost iTunes (downloaded songs) from my computer due to a hard drive crash.  The songs are currently on my iPod.  When I re-install iTunes and synch with my iPod, will I lose the songs on the iPod or will they get downloaded to the computer?
Thanks in advance

You should be able to transfer the songs from the iPod to your computer.
Connect the iPod to your computer, launch iTunes.
From the menu bar click File / Transfer Purchase From...
iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer
Make sure you use the same Apple ID.

I have both the 250 gb high performance hard drive and a 1 ter byte hard drive.  What happens when the 250 gb hardrive is full? This on Imac desktop

Never let a drive get more than 80% to 85% full.
AND keep 50-100 GB of free space on a startup drive to allow proper function of virtual memory in all OS X versions from 10.5x to current versions.
10.4x can get by with 20 GB of free space on the boot drive, but more is always better.
I try and keep all boot drives between 50 and 60% of capacity.
Beyond 60% and up to 90% capacity, seek times increase almost exponentially; performance suffers.

  • Unable to De-Authorize Computer due to Hard Drive Crash. Getting now Maximum Activations Exceeded

I purchased an iMac at BestBuy, installed my Adobe Cloud Subscription (secondary license, the primary is activated on my iMac at work) onto it and used it for a week. The hard drive crashed and I went back to BestBuy and had them replace the iMac with the same model.
I was obviously unable to de-authorize the returned iMac and on the new one I get the message: Maximum Activations Exceeded ...
Why isn't there an easier way to de-authorize computers.
I went to the chat and they gave me the tech support number which happens to be available only from Mo-Fr. I am pretty much unable to do any work from home over the weekend.
Is there any solution to this problem I am not aware of?

Nope, you need to call and have all your info ready. They are pretty sticky about confirming it's you. Once they confirm it's you they will change it. Easy Peasy. I have had to do it a couple of times over the years.

I have to install Photoshop CS4 extended on a new computer from a disk because my old computer had a hard drive crash.  There is no serial number on the back of the case.  How can I obtain a usable serial number?

    Find your serial number quickly
You can activate software without following up and registering it... at least that was the case in the past.  The serial number is normally located on the disc case or a box inside the main box.  If you did not purchase the disc from Adobe then it is possible you would have dealt with a redemption code, in which case it would have been up to you to keep a record of the serial number, especially if you did not follow up and register the software.

  • HT1751 I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro. My iTunes library is on an external hard drive. What do I do next ?

    Recently purchased a MacBook Pro.
I am currently setting it up to use. My entire iTunes library is on an external hard drive. What do I do next?

    Quit iTunes.
    Sign into another user account.
    Hold Option, launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
    Do this for all users.
NOTE: You must quit iTunes when switching users as the library can only be opened by one user at a time.

  • How do I get songs on my ipods back into my itunes library, which was lost due to hard drive crash, How do I get songs on my ipods back into my itunes library, which was lost due to hard drive crash

Due to a hard drive crash I lost my entire Itunes library.  Majority of this was from an extensive CD library that I imported into itunes.  When I reloaded itunes and viewed my library I only found the titles purchased from itunes.  How do I get music off of an itune classic & itune nano ipods and put back into the library so I don't have to re import my extensive cd collection

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
    1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
    2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
    3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.
If you didn't purchase them through Itunes, then you'll have to download software that will strip the songs from your iPod. And here is a guide about how to transfer ipod songs back to computer. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

  • How do I transfew all of my music from my iPod to my iTunes? I had to wipe my computer because my hard drive crashed and it will only let me sync my iTunes to iPod.

My hard drive crashed and I had to wipe my computer. When I plug my iPod into my computer, it asks if I want to sync my (empty) iTunes account to my (full) iPod, but doesn't give me the option to put my iPod music onto my empty iTunes account. All I want to do is put my iPod's music back into my iTunes account, but can't figure out how to do it. I had some music backed up, but when I put it into iTunes, it won't play the songs (has an ! next to it) even though I purchased the songs from iTunes. I've tried authorizing my account, but nothing brings my old account back. Any help would be appreciated.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just this reason.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:  File>Transfer Purchases

  • Purchased music recovery due to hard drive crash

Due to the 2 hard drive crashes in the past 6 months on my MacBook Pro, I have now used up all 5 of my computers for my purchased music on iTunes.
Does anyone know if Apple will possibly allow me to register the songs back on my computer since BOTH crashes were covered as "Manufacturer Error"?

    Perfect. One more question:
Do I have to have ALL my purchased music on the computer or does that matter? In other words,
I only have a portion of the purchased songs on my back up I have with me, and the rest are on a larger back up that I wont have access to for a few more months (am studying abroad), so should I wait to do this until I get the rest of them or does that matter?

  • Can I recover lost library from Windows backup file after hard drive crash?

I'm sure this has been visited before, so I'm sorry if this is redundent.
My daughters Windows notebook had to be reformatted because of a severe virus. I had all important files including iTunes songs backed up onto portable Hard Drive. Got her notebook up and running and then restored her songs back to her computer (but not into the original location). Plugged in her iPod Mini and now it shows no files at all on the Mini and iTunes will not access or recognize the songs that I restored
Prior to the restoring she was able to listen to her complete music collection on the iPod Mini.
I still have access to the backup files either on the Hard Drive or in a separate folder from which I restored the first time. Should I completely erase the songs from the notebook now and then access the backup file?
And how do I get the Mini and iTunes to recognize the music once and for all?
Thanks for any advice, help, and suggestions.

HP Pavilian Notebook   Windows XP   iPod Mini.

What you will do depends on if you have the "iTUnes Music Library.xml" file on backup. By default this file is stored on
    C (Or the drive windows is on)/documents and settings/............/My Documents/My Music/iTunes
If you DO have this file on backup, then you will have to set all the music to its EXACT location it was before reformatting

  • [CS3] Recovering project due to hard drive crash

Lost a large project due to a hard drive crash.  Have raw files on backup but not the edits done in premiere.  A data recovery firm will soon have the hard drive and they state they will be able to show me the file structure that they have recovered before I have to commit.  What should I look for to know that I will have a useable project?

    >familiar with linux
Since the Image program includes a routine to make a bootable CD, you don't need to know Linux at all... you simply choose options from various menu screens after the CD boots and starts the program
    >secondary backup of a project
I've never done so, but I would guess you can use the project save as command

  • Can anyone help me to transfer everything I have on my Ipad on to a new computer.  my hard drive crashed and a new one was installed and I do not want to loose all my apps or music.  Please help

    Hi everyone,
I am looking for help and maybe someone can help me please.  My hard drive crashed and dell installed a new one.  I have two iphones and an ipad with all my apps, music, amd photos.  Can anyone indicate me what to do so I do not lose everything when I plug in my phone.  Thanks

Naturally you should have a recent backup of your "crashed" hard drive. If you don't, well, hopefully you've learned a lesson but that doesn't solve your current problem.
If all your apps and media were purchased from the iTunes App Store, don't worry about them. Redownload all your apps and media, then allow iTunes to sync with and wipe your iOS devices - which will also put all the apps and media on them. You'll lose your settings, and any data which resided only on the iOS devices, and of course you'll need to organize your iOS folders and home screens and whatnot. But you won't really lose much, and without a backup this is your best choice.
If you have media from sources other than the iTunes App Store, look at Senuti or similar applications designed to copy media from iOS devices to computers. Use that first, then sync as I described in my second paragraph above. (I mention Senuti because it's popular. There are other options which work just as well, and some are even free.)

  • Hard drive crash - How to restore data from my iPod?

    Hi there,
I had to replace the hard disk and in my daughter's PC and now need to get the songs back from her iTouch to her computer. As you can imagine, I had no backup prior to this hard drive crash... Now how can I get the songs and applications from the iTouch back in the PC? I have authorized iTunes using the same account but it does not allow me to do any tranfer from the Itouch to the PC.
Please help... I don;t want to loose everything we have purchase and installed on the iTouch...
    Thanks,

That post of mine linked to above is quite an old one and isn't meant to specifically address an iPod Touch. You might want this more up to date information.
If your iPod is set to sync automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
If at any point you get a message that your iPod is linked to another library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
Purchased applications can be downloaded over again, see this article for details: How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod Touch or iPhone. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer data (such as playcounts and ratings), movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well.

  • Time Machine backup created on Mac with a large hard disk. What happens when restore to MacBook Air with small SSD drive?

What if a Time Machine backup was created on a Mac with a large hard disk, e.g. 500GB iMac - and I buy a new MacBook Air with a small SSD hard disk e.g 128GB. What happens when I need to use the larger Time Machine file to set up the new MacBook Air? What happens to all those files that can't fit on the smaller SSD drive?

It is not the HD size, but rather the size of the data it contains. If you right-click your 500GB drive and select "Get Info" you can see how much is actually being used.
Naturally if you are using more space than the new drive has, then you have to make some choices about what you want to keep and what you want to keep archived.
I don't know what options are available but you may simply have to do a manual restore of files you want, in groups.

BTW, this forum is for questions about iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. Normally you will get the quickest and most applicable responses if you ask your questions in the general iTunes forums.
