system crashed and lost library, want to recover

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know how to fix the xml file or prevent it's damage except to keep a current backup copy of the domain.sites2 file. You can do that on an hourly basis with Time Machine or use a backup application like Synk Standard which can do incremental backup (i.e. copy just those new or changed files) at any time.
As for separating the sites into their own domain files I use iWebSites to manage over 75 individual sites. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.
There is a downside to this method if you're publishing to MobileMe. When publishing multiple sites to MMe from their own separate domain file the last published site will be the default site when using the default URL for that MMe account: http://web.me.com/MobileMeAccountName/. That could mess up any CNAME forwarding if you have a domain name pointed to your default MMe site.

  • Please Help Me Find My Lost Library!

I have iPhoto 2 but I'm hoping someone can help me. I have an iBook G4 and I have had a lot of trouble with the libraries when they get full. I try to follow directions in Help but they don't make sense. At least today, I backed up my most recent library on a CD and at least have that because I have already lost the original. There are all of these folders with albums and different years but I am unable to pull up previous libraries. I can't believe there isn't an easier way to go back and forth between libraries. I have dragged a bunch of things to the trash that had nothing in them when I opened them but have not trashed them yet. I can't believe this has to be this difficult. I guess I tampered too much. Please can someone help me? Noel
iBook   Mac OS X (10.3.5)   Only have iPhoto 2 because I have dialup and takes too long to upgrade

Hi, thank you for your response. I will try your suggestion. I had two libraries. The one I just lost had 293 photos in it and I followed the instructions in the iPhoto help viewer, moving the library to another location and creating a new one. I tried to get it back and couldn't find it. At least I had burned it on a CD. The things I have in my Trash are things like Archive, Photo Library 2,3 and 4. I never had that many. Also there were 2 library folders that had 5 items in each and they were identical but whenever I go into a folder and click on an icon, it just brings up more pictures of folders with numbers on them. Maybe I need to find a Dummies book on iPhoto. I've had Macs for years but never had as much trouble as I've had with my laptopand iPhoto. The directions in the Help Viewer just don't make sense. I will get back to you after trying your suggestion. I have tried to bring back other libraries listed under Pictures in Finder but I get messages saying I need to create an application to open them. I usually don't have this much trouble but this has me stumped. Thank you, Noel

  • No matter what i try I can't get my LOST library...FOUND!!!

Okay so I have tried everything here and I just can't get my old library back. Today when I went to open Iphoto it was the same thing
    Iphoto cannot find Library
    buttons
Quit Create a new library Find a library
After trying to find the old one I tried creating a new one, I found some of my pictures but only pictures that I had seperated into different Albums none that I had just left in the ordinary library. I could only recall about 326 photos out of 2300. Once I realized that I couldn't get back all of the photos I came on to here to get some help. I followed so many of the suggestions
ie: exiting out and reopeing Iphoto while holding down the option button, but I could still only recall the 326, so I then went into the Library preferences and tried to delete the com.apple.iphotoplist. and tried reopening it. I still can't find them. I searched for the .jpg and still only the 326 are there. There is no way that I could have deleted them, I havn't put any new pictures on in months and I havn't downloaded any programs. I now have 2 libraries
    IPhoto Library
    IPhotoLibrary1
And they both only have the 326 that I could recall. I have never used the Forum before, and I actually don't know all that much about computers
ie: I don't know what the spotlight search is
and I am still despretly trying to find the other 2000 pcitures I hope someone has some more advice. please =(

    Hello, Katie,
Sorry for your photo loss problems.
I am not understanding what you did before you lost them.
The 326 pictures that I had found, I found them in the albums that I had copied them into, prior to the problem
Are you meaning that you put photos into albums within iPhoto? Those 'photos' are only alias that point to your iPhoto Library where the photos are actually stored. If you put them into albums in iPhoto, the originals don't get copied and should still be in the iPhotoLibrary.
So, I don't think I understand what 'albums' you mean, unless you moved them yourself, outside iPhoto.
As you are finding, when iPhoto loads, it looks into iPhotoLibrary files to find and load your photos. Usually, these are in your Pictures folder. If you have moved the photos to some other folders, iPhoto is not finding them because they are not where it looks. If you have not deleted the photos, you should be able to find them by searching on your hard drive for the .jpgs if that is the format for your photos.
If you have tampered with iPhotoLibrary's files and folders, you may have caused serious problems. See this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=165521
If your search for the photos on your HD found only the 326 photos, then they are gone. You must have deleted them somehow. You might try a Data recovery program such as these: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/datarescueinfo.php?PHPSESSID=6644886d9d018b32492d16da027253c4

For the future.....always make a backup of your iPhoto Library. Our photos are too precious to trust having them in only one location.

  • Lost library in iPhoto '08

We recently purchased a MacBook Pro and have been using iPhoto to organize all of our family photos. All was going great until this evening.
At first, iPhoto quit unexpectedly. Then, after we relaunched, the entire Mac froze. We powered down and restarted.
When we next launched iPhoto, none of our events, albums, or calendar projects appeared. We browsed the forums and used some of the suggestions including:
1.) launch holding the Option key down (there appears to be a library of 10+ gig of pics there which we believe are our photos. We've backed the library up but cannot open it.)
2.) launch holding down the Option+Apple key and selecting all of the rebuild options. No luck. iPhoto is still empty - it looks like it did the first time we launched it on the new mac.
3.) we checked the disk utilities for permissions, verified, repaired. Tried relaunching iPhoto but nothing else.
We're going to try to reboot the mac but at this point, we're lost. We spent many hours importing, sorting, creating calendars, etc. and are devastated at the thought we may have lost this work.
Any suggestions on how to recover the files and work we've done would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    - Jeff

    Jeff
It seems like your database has been corrupted in that hard crash. This will happen if iPhoto is interrupted when writing the the db file.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Help...Lost library

Have just downloaded itunes and spent ages importing cds to library. I have located my library folder in an external hard drive. Everything was going well till I closed itunes, when I opened it back up my music wasn't in the library. It is still on the external hard drive, so I know I've not lost it I just can't get itunes to access it. Does anyone know how I can overcome this problem? I have checked the settings in itunes to make sure that the right hard drive is selected. Any help would be much appreciated.

Try holding down the Option key Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. The default location for your iTunes library is in \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\. Look in there and see if you have more than one library file (they have the extension .itl) If you have more than one try opening them in turn, you may find your original library is still intact. If you moved the library file to the external drive along with the music folder you could have a look there as well: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file

  • ITunes 8 lost library and all applications for the iPhone 3g

I am on WinXP Prof, using iTunes v8. This is second time I lost my entire library with ratings, applications, etc. for my iPhone 3g. The first tie it happened to iTunes v7, now with v8.
Music folder (it is on another HDD) is still there, but iTunes shows no playlists, no files. I looked at other posts on how to rebuild the library, but could not restore song ratings. I did not have a backup of the library files (only music mp3s).
Now I re-created the library from scratch (glad iTunes writes song data into mp3 and not into its library file.)
QUESTION: How do I restore all of my applications that I bought and free ones from the App Store for iPhone? I see that the "Mobile Applications" folder is there with all of the *.ipa files, but iTunes does not show those apps. How do I make iTunes pick it up?
PS. It is really amazing to me that iTunes would behave like this in v8. Apple, WOW... Up until I bought iPhone 3G in August 2008 I was using different versions of WinAmp for ~6 years and not once did I lose my library of songs...

Hi, I and most polish users have the same problem. There are plenty of apps I would buy if I could but I need to have that **** credit card. Apple could at least enable paypal payments for foreing users but it looks they don't mind losing money they could get (America is not the only country wehere people have iPhones).
So I guess most iPhone users will continue to hack their phones to be able to install greatly affordable commercial applications instead of buying it. I gess I don't understand Apple anymore.

  • I lost entire photo library in iPhoto.  How do I retrieve the lost library?

I went to open iPhoto only to find my entire photo library was gone.  I have no idea how this has happened.  I backed up my photos on an external hard drive but cannot access them that way.  I keep getting a message saying it's a backed up version and I have to hit "option" while I open iPhoto.  That is not working either.  How can I find these lost photos?

I keep getting a message saying it's a backed up version and I have to hit "option" while I open iPhoto.
What kind of backup of your library do you have?  If it is aTime Machine backup, see this document:

I went to open iPhoto only to find my entire photo library was gone.  I have no idea how this has happened.
What did you do, before this happened?  Have you been updating or upgrading software?  Moved your iPhoto Library to a new location on external drives?
Have there been crashes? which version of iPhoto or MacOS X do you have?

  • Lost library and playlistgs/smartlists after upgrade

I just downloaded the latest itunes and have lost about one third of my library and all play lists and smart lists. poof! I have searched the hard drive and all of the music is there in the music folder (including that which was not included in the library after the upgrade - why wasn't it all put back in?). So my questions are: (1) Is there any way to retrieve the smartlists and play lists? (2) How do I get all of my music from the music folders into the library?
    Thanks.

I'm having the same problem on iphone4. All my contents on my iphone 4 are lost after I upgraded it to ios 5.1.1. That is includding my contacts too.
Every time I connected my iphone4 back to Itunes. It showed a pop-up menu said " Itunes was interrupted while restoring the contents of the iphone, would you like to restore this iphone again now?" but when I clicked "continue restore" button. It showed another pop-up menu said "an error occurred while restoring this iphone(-50)."   Please see the pictures at below.
I think all the backup contents are still there. I have googled about this problem. I found many people has suffered this, but I couldn't find any solution.
Please help! Those contents are so important to everyone of us, especially the phone contacts. Thanks!

  • Itune lost library old ipod need to be sync

Hi I got itune messed up and when updating (i talk about few months ago perhaps) lost all my music and ipod playlist. So now I have my ipod (ipod nano 5th generation) with my music but if I sync with itune it will get erased so I'd like to repeat the process of syncing starting from a full ipod.
    question 1:
Now i managed to get the music from the ipod save on my computer with this post http://macs.about.com/od/backupsarchives/ss/copy-ipod-music-to-mac_6.htm
now what i'd like to do is to put these songs from the folder where are saved directly to "my ipod" playlist rather than drag to music main folder of itune. drag and drop won't work I searched how to send songs from a folder to a playlist and came across this post http://hintsforums.macworld.com/archive/index.php/t-40585.html ) it suggest to download a script which a did but once put in the folder I don't know how to run it...
    suggestions?
I thought about delete all the music in music itune and put the song of folder "my ipod" as new total music library then send them all to ipod playlist and then rebuild my music library but if there is another way i'd prefer...
    question 2 :
if i manage to put those song in the "my ipod playlist" how to tell ipod to sync on that playlist? if i go to my ipod section in itune (when plugged) and then music tab the music syncing is already set on "selected playlist"  but won't tell me which one (and I might doubt is different name) and if i thick "sync music" it will ask me to start syncing without allowing me to change the setting already pre set.
    question 3:
if itune will be so smart to sync the ipod with "my ipod" playlist will it delete the on the go playlist? i'd like to keep that on my ipod, otherwise i have to export it. I found this post http://forums.ilounge.com/ipod-classic-ipod-5g-video/210062-how-can-i-get-playli st-off-my-new-160-gb-ipod-classic-into-itunes.html on how to export and import the playlist and I tried but it tell me that not all the file were imported cause they haven't been found. still on the ipod they are all there
    Thanks

  • LOST LIBRARY - PLEASE HELP!!

Last night I was trying to move some pictures from my wife's phone to my MBP via bluetooth and something went wrong. At a guess, I saved the photo file that I was transferring AS iphoto not IN iphoto - but as i say thats a complete guess. I have moved photos onto the MBP before via bluetooth without problems.
When I open up iphoto now its completely blank and empty - our library was under the 'shared' users folder so that both my wife and I could see it whichever profile we were using. I haven't backed up previous to this (ironically my new G Drive Hard Drive arrived yesterday). I am in the process of backing up now before I try to recover my 'lost' photos - thought right now I am unsure how to do this.
Now when I try to open the iphoto library in the shared folder, it says 'there is no default application to open the document iphoto library' and takes me into the application folder (presumably) to select the iphoto application, but I don't want to select this until I have finished backing up, just in case.
Having looked at package contents under this iphoto library, I can see there is no 'originals' folder in there as has been mentioned in other threads.
Is anyone able to help please?

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the Library location.
    If that fails
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:

  • Lost library and only a portion was salvaged - how I get the rest?

I was running Google Earth and iTunes at the same time today and our computer crashed. As a result, we lost our library (we do have it backed onto our iPhone except the album I purchased just before it crashed). I followed the instructions under apple.com/support (users/music/itunes...moving iTunes Music Library.xml on the the desktop, etc. etc.). It only recovered a small portion of our albums. When I go to users/music/itunes, there is a folder that has all our music in it. I tried to bring it in to iTunes and every time I've tried to do that, iTunes crashes. I'm a bit nervous to get the music from our ipod. I disabled the automatic sync on iTunes but when I go to do it manually, it says this phone is recognized by another iTunes application. I hope this all makes sense! Help!

I told you how to get the music from your ipod.
Relax, I am trying to help. You can check the inferiority complex. You would be shocked at the number who never backup anything and then are shocked that there is no way to get the music back.
Not that I feel like helping you further, but try this article ( and try being more polite to those you ask for help):

  • BIG Problem - lost library

Hi there, last time I posted here my problem was solved in hours so I'm hoping someone can help this time!
I left my computer running overningt playing itunes and awoke to find that it had rebooted. I think that Wondows defender does that for spyware sweeps occasionally. When I started itunes again it was completely empty - all songs & playlists gone. I tried to sync my ipod with it to reload everything & it tells me that I can't transfer to an unauthorized library. It appears that my old itunes has been replaced with a new (and empty) one.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
I humbly thank you in advance,
    Karl

It sounds as though your library file was corrupted when your computer rebooted.
The iTunes Library file is a database about your music, not your actual music files.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732
Unfortunatley it appears you have lost the library file and iTunes has created a new empty one.
You can simply add your iTunes Music folder to the empty library (assuming that is where all your music is) this will get your tracks back into the library but without playlists etc.
Another possibility is to use the backup libarary file made when you upgraded from 6.0.5 but you lose everything since then:
You need to recover the backup version 6 library made when you first upgraded to V7. It should be in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder which is in the iTunes folder.
It will be called iTunes Library yyyy-mm-dd.itl where the date is that of first upgrade to V7.
When you have found the backup, drag iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml out of the iTunes folder to your desktop. Then copy the backup library from the Previous iTunes Libraries folder into the iTunes folder. Rename it iTunes Library.itl and you should be good to go.
This will take the library back to the day of the first upgrade. You will have to add any changes since then.
Start iTunes and check that purchased music plays before plugging the iPod, it may be necessary to authorise the computer.
You could investigate third party software which can transfer information from your iPod. Copypod is one example but there are others.
This seems to be a common problem and it is a good idea to make regular backup copies of your library files once you get things back to how you want them:
    Backup the iTunes Library Files
    The library files are in:
    My Documents\My Music\iTunes
Close iTunes and wait about 30 seconds.
Copy iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml somewhere else e.g. into the Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
To restore, with iTunes closed drag the current itl and xml file from the iTunes folder to the desktop, then copy the backup iTunes Library.itl into the iTunes folder. The xml file isn’t necessary but can come in handy if the library needs to be recreated and the itl file is causing problems.

  • Lost library file, how to re-setup?

My internal drive died, which is where my library file seems to have been. My media folder was on an external drive. So, I have all of my stuff, but am wondering what the best way to set up a new library would be. I realize I've lost all my playlists and counts and such. I can live with that. But I don't want to have to create a new folder and copy over 300+ GB of stuff. Any thoughts?

There 's a certain amount you can do if you have a backup of your library files, or an old iTunes library.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/20401436 - turingtest2 11/2012 post on rebuilding empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash from previous iTunes library file.
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
You can start iTunes, let it create a new, blank library file.  Configure it to save media to its current location on the external drive.  Drag a few files to the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder as a test.  Since the media foler location is on the external drive hopefully it won't try to copy to the external just to put it back on the external drive and hopefully it won't even try to move them on the external drive if they are in the correct structure already from the previous library.   If it seems to work properly then proceed with the rest (maybe don't do all 300GB in one go).  I don't use your version of iTunes, nor do I have your setup so I can't test this.

  • Can't keep Iphoto open to rebuild lost library

Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I don;t have a backup and when I follow these steps nothing happens.  Iphoto won't stay open so I can start over and add photos from the Pictures file.  Any suggestions?

Well with no backup you may have lost your photos - and if you have not you will sooner or later - things fail and with no backup when they do you lose stuff
What exactly happens when you depress and HOLD the option and command keys and launch iPhtoo - keeping the option and command keys depressed until the firat aid window appears?
you can also download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use the rebuild in the free trial to create a totally new library leaving the existing one untouched for future use
