Lost link to FrameMaker Book

I have my RoboHelp project with a linked FrameMaker book checked into a Mercurial source control repository. The original machine I was working with (XP) was starting to blue screen regularly, so I was given a new Windows 7 64 bit machine.
Having cloned my repository, I opened up the RoboHelp project to find the FrameMaker book link had disappeared, but with the last Update folders for each chapter present. I linked the FrameMaker book again, and this created a new lot of output folders when generating the output (WebHelp). The help system is not picking up the new files, only the existing ones, and I can't seem to delete the old folders.
Anyone else had a similar issue?

No, unfortunately, I can't. My old credentials do not work anymore. Some time ago Adobe forums started requiring an email as an only form of a login into the forums. Back then I succesfully 'linked' my old forums ID to the Adobe ID (what is now an only option to get to the forums). But after a breach into Adobe's database and the password reset I've lost a link from my Adobe ID to that old forum ID of mine (witkacy). The only way was to establish a second forum ID (witkacy2). My question is - is there any way to regain the link to my old forum ID to my current Adobe ID.

  • Hyperlinks between RH projects linked with FM books

    HI, I want to link multiple framemaker books to robohelp and use each book as a child project in a master project. However, there are multiple hyperlinks between the framemaker books. I have created individual RH projects, and linked a single book to each project.  I generated them all into a master project (as usual), but the hyperlinks between the projects (that worked fine between the PDFs generated from the original Framemaker books) are broken in the output. I check the html of the hyperlinks in RH, and while the text is recognized as a hyperlink, the href tag is missing.
    Note: All links with target and destination in the same book / project work fine.
    I could create a single book containing all these books, and then link this book to FM, and this would probably avoid the issue, but it wouldn't be a good solution as I would then have  workflow / source control issues.  Also, I would obviously prefer not to have to manually repair the links in RH, due to time contstraints.
    Any suggestions?

    How long a path length are you looking at for the linked FM documents? It turns out that RH is very sensitive to the length of the paths that make up the cross-references in FM when turning them into hyperlinks in RH.

  • Is there a way to link two FrameMaker 12 books with shared content into the same RoboHelp 11 file?

    This one might require some back story.
    I'm working at a company with roughly 60 business units that will each be getting their own emergency response procedures (.FM files compiled into a single FrameMaker .book file for their department). I then want to link all of these books to a single RoboHelp so that when it comes time to publish all of these plans into WebHelp menus I can do that with a single batch generate/publish.
    My problem is that some of the FM files within the books are shared (maybe two or more departments are at the same location or all of them share the same corporate level plans) so that when I try to link two books with a shared FM file it throws an error.
    Is there away to allow multiple copies of a FM file to exist in a single RoboHelp? Or is there a better solution to the task at hand?
    Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated as I am still a moderate beginner with Frame and RoboHelp.

    P.S. Just to complicate things this will all be done via SharePoint so books and FM files live there, and then the RoboHelp output will be published there.

    I think you’re looking at creating a merged RH project – one parent project that subsumes all the linked FM to RH child projects – read up on merged help on Peter’s site (grainge.org)

  • RoboHelp 10 can't update linked FrameMaker book

    When I open a previously working project and go to update the FrameMaker files, the Update and Update All options are greyed out.
    A possible culprit is that Windows Update ran automatically while the project was open, and then restarted the machine.
    If I Force Update All, RH launches an instance of FM, which doesn't open anything and remains on its startup screen. If FM is already running with the book + .fm files open, another instance of FM starts w/o loading any files. RH then hangs, going into a "Not responding" state in Task Manager.
    If I start a new blank project and attempt to link to the FM book, RH launches another blank instance of FM and hangs.
    I tried opening the project and exporting the project settings in an .isf file, but RH hangs trying to scan.
    i tried relinking the FM book, but RH launches another blank instance of FM and hangs.
    i tried deleting the book, but RH hung partially through the deletion.
    i tried reinstalling RH. Same behavior.
    Is there some file I can delete and/or restore to reacquiant FM and RH?
    Note that when Windows Update ran the FM book was open too, and when I subsequently generated/updated the book, some files were listed as missing and some cross-refs were broken. This was fixed by replacing the broken cross-refs. The FM book generated/updated with no errors before the first attempt to update in RH.

    Summary
    This issue was resolved.
    It seems to have been a registry corruption on my machine due to a Windows Update restart that occurred when the Help project and FrameMaker project were open.
    The main symptom was that RoboHelp could no longer update the project from the FrameMaker files and was spawning a new instance of FM with each retry, even if FM was already open.
    I tried lots of things: opened a new project, restored a backup copy of project, attempted an export of project etc., etc. (see above).
    The solution was to:
    - revert to a "known good" restore point in Windows (before the auto-update)
    - deactivate and uninstall TCS 4
    - run Windows Update
    - re-install TCS 4
    - turn automatic Windows Updates OFF
    Everything in FrameMaker and RoboHelp generates properly now.

    If you have, say, 30 chapters in a FrameMaker book, you can
    update the content in RoboHelp by each chapter. That is, you don't
    need to update the whole book when you want to update the chapter.
    Use "Update" for one document and "Update All" for all FrameMaker
    documents/books in RoboHelp project. However, you cannot Update by
    HTML topic in RoboHelp. For example, if a chapter in FrameMaker is
    converted to 15 topics in RoboHelp, you need to update the whole
    chapter.
    There is another powerful feature in RoboHelp which helps you
    preserve the topics in RoboHelp from any update. Right click on the
    FrameMaker document (chapter in a book) and select properties. In
    one of the tabs, you can select topics which you don't want to get
    updated when you update the Chapter. This feature is powerful
    however should be used with caution.

  • Error when linking FrameMaker book or document to RoboHelp project (TCS2)

    Hi,
    I'm trying to link a FrameMaker (9.0p250) book to a RoboHelp (8.0.2.208) project, but get the following error:
    "Failed to get any FrameMaker document from C:\.....\myfile.book" / OK
    When I select the book file to link and choose [Open] I get an hourglass for a couple minutes then the error above. No wizard or "Scanning..." progress window.
    I've tried linking a book from a network drive, from my hard drive, with the book open in FM9 and not open in FM9 (but FM9 itself is open).
    Also tried linking an FM9 document and this time got the "Scanning..." progress window then the message:
    ""myfile.fm" could not be opened. Please verify that FrameMaker is installed and this is a valid FrameMaker document."
    This is my first time trying this since installing TCS2, however I was able to link a book file when working with the trial version.
    Any idea what may be the problem?

    I think this was due to a PC or network issue. After redocking my laptop today I can now link without error.

    I don't think you can force the links through unchanged. FM adds the extra info so it can tell the difference between targets that have identical names but came from different files in the book. I also think your example is missing one of the arguments. A typical newlink marker for me comes out as M7.8.newlink.test1
    The first argument can be Mn or Fn, where:
    Mn indicates a Marker in the nth file in the book (7 in this case).
    Fn indicates the First page of the nth file in the book.
    The second argument, which is numeric, indicates the marker type: 8 for hypertext marker, 9 for cross-reference marker.
    The last argument (which includes the "newlink" text) is the mangled marker text, in which any periods, underlines, and colons are deleted, and all spaces are then replaced by periods.
    newlink t.e_s:t1 becomes
    M7.8.newlink.test1
    FM adjust both links and targets in the same way, so they both match up in the final PDF document. It's just the way it is. If you're using the targets for other things then you'll just have to adjust those other things so they look for the finished targets in their final syntax.

    When I import/link a FM book, one document does not get generated as topic. RoboHelp does display the chapter icon under the link in the Project manager, and also indicates the status (green, yellow needs update..) but no topic is present there.
    Is there any specific content that prevents the importing/linking process?

    RoboHelp does not generate a topic for a particular FM file if the topic to be generated does not have any content. In other words, blank topics are not generated by RoboHelp during conversion from FrameMaker. Please make sure that the chapter has some content to be converted to RoboHelp topic.

  • Links to FM Books Severed on Upgrade to TCS5

    Since we upgraded to Tech Comm Suite 5, our RoboHelp projects are no longer linked (single-sourced) to their FrameMaker books. To correct this, we have to relink the projects and then go through the process of setting up the project all over again (mapIDs, table of contents, index, etc.) again, which is a very time consuming process prone to errors. Can anyone please help us avoid having to do this manual process for every single one of our many RoboHelp projects?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Rh11 does support projects being on a network although the OLH does state it will depend on network traffic. However, I can confirm that it is important that the project is first upgraded from the local copy that you had with previous versions of Rh.
    Surely if you upgrade the project locally now, the whole point of linking is that changes to the source documents get applied when you then update the links? I'm working on the basis that the links will still be good on upgrade when done locally.
    After that you could try moving the project to the network again. I have found that for most things it's just a bit slower. Heavy tasks like generating an output will take longer and only you can find out how much and whether that is acceptable. Working locally will always be quicker but some organisations don't like that.

  • How can I create one pdf from a FrameMaker Book with mixed page sizes.

    Looking for an easier way to create one pdf from a FrameMaker book that has files with different pages sizes; letter and tabloid.
    So far, I have not been able to find a way to set up the Adobe PDF printer or Distiller to read the page size from the source files in the book and then create one pdf with the appropriate page sizes based on the file sizes in the FrameMaker book. I can create a pdf of the book using a multi-step process where I create a pdf for each page size and then combine them into one file. This is a lot of work.
    Is there a way to set the Adobe PDF printer where it reads page size from the source files and then creates one pdf with a mixed page sizes?
    Using FrameMaker 7 and 10 and Acrobat X Pro.

    Sub Problem:
    I am making an array of quads of all the hyperlinks in a document. I would like to automatically skip over all the bookmarks in the starting pages of a document and just get the links of the hyperlinks.
    Now I have to manually set the pages that contain bookmarks so they are not included in the array.
    Is there any way to determine if a link is a book mark or hyperlink in java script?
    It would help automate the conversion I need below

    I have been working on converting a set of pdf files with 1000’s of hyperlinks like www.site.com\folder1\file1.pdf#page=10
    To jump to a local copy of the files with a relative type link
    ../folder1/file1.pdf and then go to the proper page.
    I have found that it can be done manually by changing the hyperlink to a javascript

    and setting each destination file with a disclose()=true;

    I have resorted to the following plan using acrobat javascript, an external keyboard macro recorder and excel in combination to get around the problem
    Four folder level acrobat javascripts with “buttons”
    One to get all the link quads in an array, in the pdf and report the total number
    The second creates a form field in the far corner of the first page and moves there.
    The third jumps to each link found by creating a form field just to the left of the link and zooms in so it can be selected by a “mouse click” from the keyboard macro recorder 
    The forth deletes the form field
    The keyboard macro recorder runs javascript 2 and then 3 then clicks on the link just to the right of the middle of the screen and uses keys to get to the advanced editing to get to edit the hyperlink .
    The hyperlink is then copied to excel where it is converted using string functions to the needed javascript text to be copied back.
    To the acrobat file into a java script (after deleting the hyperlink)
    Rinse/lather/repeat
    I have been able to convert about 150 links an hour.
    Better then hand typing, but not like having java access to the links.
    I am looking to improve the solution

    When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF? Currently when I have a Framemaker book that I want to save as a PDF, I choose Save Book As and then choose PDF for the file format. A dialog box comes up in which I can choose the Bookmarks tab and choose which tagged content I want to be made into bookmarks in the PDF file. What if I would rather have the filename of a document rather than the chapter title be a bookmark in the PDF? Is that possible? Where would I choose that option? Thanks!

    There are two ways that you could do this. You can either use postscript text frames and enter the correct pdfmark entries to show the file name with the corresponding actions (i.e. where to go in the PDF) or you can use hidden text in FM and the "Filename (Short) " variable in a unique paratag to be picked up by FM's bookmark creation.

    The hidden text route would use FM's Color Views to specify a colour as Invisible. This will make the content visually disappear from the screen (and any output), but FM will still be able to read the contents of any text that is coloured with the Invisible colour(s).
    1. Pick or create a colour that you want to be invisible. [Magenta is usually a good bet and stands out visually].
    2. Set that colour to be invisible in View 1 and visible in View 6. [you can use the shortcut <esc> v 1 and <esc> v 6 to toggle between the views.]
    3. Create a paratag to use for the filename and set the font colour to use the invisible colour.
    3. In the title of each chapter file, drop an anchored frame that is set to be outside of the text frame [so it won't interfere with any other content].
    4. In that AFrame, insert a text frame and use the invisible paratag defined in step 3.
    5. Insert the Filename (Short) variable in that text frame.
    6. Repeat steps for all files to be included in the bookmarks.
    When creating the PDF bookmarks, select only the paratag used for the invisible colour.
    Don't forget to toggle the View to be invisible (i.e. <esc> v 1  - this also works at the book level for all files in the book).
