Lost link to library

Hello all, I've just upgraded my Mac to a lovely spangly 27" widescreen (great screen btw).
Previously my itunes library was on an external and I'd like to keep it that way, however on starting up the new Mac and getting everything up & running, I plugged my external in and chose it as the library in iTunes preferences.
When trying to play something, it seems to recognise most of the movies fine, but a lot (and I mean A LOT) of my music has become disconnected, so any ideas how to get them bak on there (without the need to reimport about 6000 tracks would be appreciated.
I hate the sight of the grey exclamation marks!!
thanks
Trev

Eveything is now in a single iTunes folder on your internal drive?  Library files and all?  If that is the case I recommend:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
I think if you are going to have iTunes on an external drive you might as well put it all on the external drive (including library files).  This will facilitate moving the collection in the future because then you only need drag the iTunes folder elsewhere. The only time I would consider not keeping the library files with the media files is if I wanted some media on an external and some on an internal and disabled itunes from managing my media, but we're talking a specific setup here.

  • Lost Link Between Library and iTunes

    Hi,
I have moved my itunes files (iTunes Library, with about 50GB of music) onto a external drive connected to my PC via USB.
When I open iTunes, it opens as usual and shows the list of all files.
However, iTunes cannot find the music files in their original location because they are now on the external drive.
Please let me know how to point iTunes to the location on the external drive where the library file can be found.
I need iTunes to map all songs automatically. I do not want to locate each and every song.
    Regards,

I just found the answer. Quite simple.
    Press ALT to display menu.
    Go to EDIT  then PREFERENCES
Click tab that says ADVANCED (far right hand side) of the pop up window.
Click CHANGE button where it says: ITunes Media Folder Location
and browse to location where the iTunes Libary & files are stored
Click OK - it took a couple of minutes to link the songs.

  • Itunes lost link to library?!?

Dropped my phone on tuesday and smashed the screen so backed it up immediately on itunes. the following day went into itunes and computer had crashed and coudnt find itunes library. With my little knowledge i tried to link it back up to the right file. Apple shop replaced my phone yesterday and when i tried to backup its replaced all contacts etc but all pictures/videos etc haven't been replaced.. can anyone suggest how i rectify this. I think they'll still be on the computer, but i've somehow dropped the link???

I've uploaded a newer version that might catch that error. For some background on the script look at this thread.
iTunes remembers the location of each file in the database. If you right-click on a missing file, click Get Info, cancel when it asks you to try to find it, then look on the summary tab it will show you the last known location in the form file://localhost/<some path>. If you put the files back where they are expected to be, close iTunes and reopen, then iTunes will find them again. If not my script can attempt the task. When the script asks for a media folder you should respond with Z:\ since that seems to be where the artist folders are located.

  • Lost link to library after updating to Itunes5

Hi, grateful if anyone can help. After a lot of problems I eventually managed to upgrade to Itunes 5, however the library folder is now empty. Due to partition space I had previosuly set up my Itunes library in a different location to the default settings (and also backed up on a seperate hard disk). I have checked the folder to where I store my music and they are still there. (If I click on a file it will play in Itunes).
I have clicked on preferences within I tunes and the designated folder path is to the correct location, but the library is empty when I open in Itunes. I have tried dragging XML files accross to the folder where my music is stored bu this has not helped.
Also cannot move my entire libray back due to partition space (can't move partitions either which is a seperate issue).
    Grateful if anyone can help.

Your i-device was not designed to be a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining your media on a computer which is itself backed up. Sync transfer is one way, computer to device, matching the device content to the content on the computer (except purchased content as mentioned below).  For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will probably have to use third party commercial software unless you have an older model iPod. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • I have lost my itunes library after updating it and keep getting a message saying MSVCR80.dll is not installed when I try to uninstall/reinstall it???

I have lost my itunes library after updating it. Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling it and it gets so far then tells me that it cannot be installed because MSVCR80.dll is not installed on my pc. I have no idea what this is and have googled it, followed links to sites that say they can fix it, only for them to scan, tell me I have 3 thousand issues and then want me to pay $30 dollars to fix it for me. This message also appears on firing up my pc too.
    Can anyone help please?

I've been through the exact same thing and cannot seem to get an answer here. When you go to Manage Storage, does it have something at the top like "19.1 GB of 25 GB available"? I only have a Mail account with 5.3 GB in it and a Backups account with 553 MB in it. Obviously, these don't add up to 19.1 GB. There was no change in any of these numbers when I deleted all the same files you mention. With the free Mobile Me storage expiring next month, this is something I'm pretty concerned about.

  • I lost my iTunes Library (someone stole my computer), how can I recover it?

I lost my iTunes Library (someone stole my computer), I still have my Ipod, I don't mind to have the music only on my Ipod, but how can I recover my Library?
    Thanks for your help

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Mac and Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • My old computer crashed and I lost my old library of recorded CD's and new music.  I downloaded iTunes again and found my old account info.  How do I add a new CD without deleting all of my music on my iPod?

My old Computer crashed and I lost my old library of recorded CD's and tunes.  iTunes says I must delete everything off my iPod in order to add a new CD.  It also said I already have an account which I was able to locate.  I don't know how to get into my old account.  I think that would solve everything.  I have Windows XP.  I'd appreciate any input.

    No.
All iTunes content on your iPod Touch should be in your iTunes library on your computer, and your iTunes library on your computer should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data - stored on an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes only.
When music was purchased on a CD, if the CD was lost and you returned to the store where the CD was purchased with your receipt, were you given a replacement CD?
    The same applies here.

  • Somehow my itunes started a new library and I lost my old library. Itunes will not allow me to sync new music to my ipod without deleting stored music from ipod. How can I start using this new library and sync the new music without losing existing music.

Somehow my Itunes started a new music library and I lost the old library.  Itunes will not allow me to sync new music from my computer to my Ipod because it is now in a different library. Itunes wants to delete all my Ipod music before sync any new music. How do I work around this. I think this happened during Itunes Upates.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

I lost my iTunes library on my pc when the hard drive crashed. None of the data on the drive was recoverable and I did not have a backup either locally or on the cloud. Much of the music is from old vinyl and podcasts which are no longer available.
How can I get the music that resides on my ipod nano (4th generation) back onto the new hard drive on my pc.
I have been reluctant to install iTunes on the new hard drive out of fear that I will lose all the contents on the ipod if I try to synch to the new hard drive.

Not directly but you can sync to an iTunes equipped computer and then sync to the iPad...unless you have single-use tunes which cannot be shared.

Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.

  • Linking a library to a list - filtering data per selected drop down / check box item

    Good day,
I am rather new to SharePoint and have run into a dilemma. Is it possible to link a library to a list, then create a parent-child relationship between the the department (list) to document (library)?
Example - I have a library that contains 100+ documents, the library is filtered using groups/subgroups.
    IT
     -> IT TX (30 docs)
     -> IT WI (10 docs)
    Biz Ops
-> Biz Ops WI (8 docs)
-> Biz Ops CA (5 docs)
In the list I created I have departments as a required field, and a dropdown tool that shows the 5 departments that contain items that need to be grouped together. (Biz Ops, IT, HR, Sales, and Compliance)
I have linked the library of documents to the form (list), using "Lookup (information already on this site)". All the documents in the library appear in the selection box within the list. However is it possible to first select a department which
then filters documents only tied to said department? So at the beginning of the list you choose the department you wish to browse the documents, then it filters out all documents not related to that department?
My apologies if this is long winded and confusing. Your help is most appreciative.
    Cheers.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to filter the corresponding documents from a Document Library when you selected a department in a List.
I recommend that you can follow the steps as below to implement it in your environment.
    1. Create a new Web Part Page and add the Document Library and the List web part into it.
    2. Click the List web part, click the current web part’s drop-down arrow, choose Connections, Send Row of Data To, and then choose the Document Library web part.
    3. Click the Document Library web part, choose the “All Items” view from the Selected View, click the current web part’s drop-down arrow, choose Connections, Get Filter Values From,
and then choose the List web part.
    4. Open the Configure Connection – Webpage Dialog, choose the “Department” column from the Provider Field Name drop-down list and choose the “Group” column from the Consumer Field
    Name drop-down list.
    5. Click Apply, OK button, save the Web Part Page and test it in your environment.
