Lost link to my library - Iphoto, Dock, Safari

Hi, I recently switched from pc to Mac... and I still have troubles getting around a few issues.
This morning, after downloading pictures from my camera, Iphoto signaled that some pictures were not readable. After I restarted my mac, the Dock (bottom screen icons) was not the same as I had previously organized it. But more dramatic, my IPhoto totally lost the link to my library. As a matter of a fact, it strated without any mentione of my albums on the left side menu (as if it was brand new!!). I also noted that my safari lost its bookmarks. I guest this has something to do with the mac not being able to access some sort of accout profile but I can figure out how to restore it. Can anybody help me? Many thanks, FB

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It seems that you're problem may be system related rather than iPhoto. I suggest you do the following:
1 - run Disk Utility and Repair disk permissions.
2 - reboot into Safe Mode (hold down the Shift key during the boot process). This will perform the File System Check (fsck). At this time check iPhoto and Safari.
3 - boot back into normal mode. If all is not well the download and reinstall the 10.4.6 COMBO updater followed by a permissions repair.
4 - If iPhoto is still messed up, use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library. It will create a new library and leave your current one untouched. It succeeds where the normal rebuild fails.
My preference is to manually upload my photos to a folder on the HD either thru Image Capture or the Finder with a card reader - with iPhoto closed. Then if there's a crash iPhoto will not damage the AlbumData.xml file that is uses to record all the info on the imported files.

  • Issues with Filevault, Tiger, Dock & Safari lost pref. settings & iPhoto...

Hope you experts out there can shed some light. Here's a recap-
Nov 05 - we turned on Filevault. Since then, for a month or 2, restarting takes just a few minutes longer and a flashing earth icon appears before the apple spinning wheel. This no longer happens. All seems fine until now.
Since Mon, I started backing up iPhoto library onto CD-R. No problem, though after burning a few CDs, "the drive failed to respond, unable to recover.." a few times, but after shut down & restart, finally ok.
I also noticed Safari settings suddenly went back to default by itself, so rechecked all pref settings; next time mac was restarted, same thing happened except more bad things happened:
A)- All bookmarks disappeared in bookmark menu & bookmark bar.
    B)- iPhoto won't run & load pictures.
C)- Dock appeared as "default", all the application icons I previously added are gone!
D)- iMovie icon became a "?" on the dock.
E)- i Sync failed to sync due to "unable to login to .mac"; have a .mac a/c.
So far what I've done with Apple Support:
1- Under a test user, opened "Disk Utility", click "Repair Disk", i.e. the HD, but message appeared "No repairs were necessary". Test user then deleted, log off.
2- Logged back in under my username, dragged the existing dock .plist file to trash. But after rebooting computer using the "control", "apple", "p" & "r" keys simultaneously, nothing is fixed.
3- I've backed up all personal files, documents, and most of iPhoto Library on CD-R.
4- I then performed an "Archive & Reinstall" of the OSX Tiger (http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n107120) , with the box checked for Preserve Users and Network Settings". After installation, I also installed Software Update, but still nothing is fixed, i.e iPhoto won't run, dock is default, bookmarks on Safari are all gone, Backup to iDisk goes on & on for over 5 hrs & so I force quit, some files on iDisk can't be located right now.
5- Today, I followed the article in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25695, created a test user again, pull the .sparseimage file, and "repair disk". It came back "no repairs were necessary". Closed Disk Utility, launched iPhoto, and it worked. I dragged a few pics, did some edits, and it was fine. So this is all good under test user. Does this process tell me the .sparseimage does not need repair and that it's not corrupted..?
6- Logged back under my user, dragged "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" on desktop, deleted cache file, restarted the computer, and launched iPhoto. It's been 6 hrs, and iPhoto is still "loading photos" with spinning wheel.
That said, this whole process really ruled out that it's not an iPhoto problem since it runs under the test user. It just won't work under my user name. Any idea or suggestion of what to do next... ???
Regarding the dock settings, I have removed the old dock plist file, and rebuilt a new dock. So far, logging in & out, restarting the computer did not affect it. Safari Bookmark collections suddenly have all these folders appearing with default bookmarks, weird, not sure why? iSync, half hr ago, started working, since I've set it to sync bookmarks, iCal, Address book, I just saw all my original bookmarks under "Imported IE favorites" in the Collections column, though they are organized quite different. So I assume iSync did it.
    Here are some key questions:
1- Cause: Are problems caused by Filevault, or something is wrong with my OS before I did "Archive & Install" ? After archive & install, testing iPhoto under test user, and doint step 5 & 6 above, iPhoto still not load pics after a window appeared to upgrade thumbnails. Could filenames of some photos being long have anything to do with it or could it be other reasons?
2- Filevault failed to turn off after a few trials, with warning msg saying "filevault unable to turn off, unable to recover disk space". I found this article - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25635. But don't know how to solve this problem.
3- iDisk - some files are lost, why?
4- Backup program - won't even backup to iDisk, pending for over 6 hrs, why? When I backup things to iDisk, do files get stored in the "Backup" folder or "Documents" under the iDisk icon in the Finder window ?
5- iMovie icon on dock is now "?", why? But then, I have iMovie HD. FYI - I upgraded to Tiger Apr 05, and iLife'o5 last July.
I hope I make myself clear, so if anyone has any experience or insight with my problems, I'd appreciate so much.
    Thanks, Lucien

  • Lost link between iPhoto library and iPhoto.app

While learning how to use Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Bridge, I made the choice to "browse" in Bridge. When I next started iPhoto 6.06, my link to the Library was lost. I have worked with AppleCare support, done every exercise short of creating a new library and losing my organization. With 20,000 + photos I would like to avoid that exercise. I do have backups but am trying to figure out if I can solve this any other way. All my files are still in iPhoto Library, and I can see the organization of my albums in Bridge. With some exercises, I get the message: "Unreadable files: 1. The following file could not be imported: '/Users/john/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Library.iPhoto.'"
If I delete Adobe Photoshop Elements and Bridge from the hard drive, will this help? I promise I did not do anything within iPhoto Library in Finder!
    Thanks so much!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There's absolutely no harm in using PSE with iPhoto, it's Bridge that's a killer. So that's what you chuck from your machine. Set up PSE as an external editor in the iPhoto Preferences. That way you can double click a pic in iPhoto and it will open automatically in PSE, save it PSE and have it come back into iPhoto seamlessly.
What's likely happened here is that you have (or Bridge has) made changes in the iPhoto Library Folder which has broken the link between iPhoto and the library files.
    Some things to try:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Choose Locate, and point iPhoto at the iPhoto Library Folder.
What Back Ups do you have? If there's an up-to-date one, then try copying the library6.iphoto file from it to the iPhoto Library Folder allowing it to overwrite the confused one.
That said, if these don't work, your options will only be to create and populate a new library: To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Finally, the message
"Unreadable files: 1. The following file could not be imported: '/Users/john/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Library.iPhoto.'"
is because iPhoto will not import a picture that's in the active iPhoto Library Folder - a sensible precaution against duplication.

  • Unused iPhoto Library in Dock: Remove

    Hello,
I have two iPhoto libraries. One I named but never started remains in my dock. I have followed the steps to remove - find the file extension and drag to trash. But it has no file extensions. I have searched for it but it is not on my computer to delete.
When I click on it in the dock, holding down the option key, nothing happens. It is just an option 'library 3' with no exisitng library to open to and no file path. How do I remove this dead link in my iPhoto dock?
    Thank you

    That doesnt work.
iPhoto is one icon in my dock. I access my libraries by pressing down 'option'. When I do this I can see a list of my libraries. I have a dead link there. It says 'Library 1' 'Library 2' and when pressed these open up the relevant libraries. Then there is a listing for 'Library 3' which does not exist. It doesn't do anything when pressed. It has no attached library. I created it and never started it. Now I can't even open it to delete it as it has no content and it does not exist as a file on my computer to be dragged to trash. How do I remove this dead link?

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
First, empty the Trash, if possible.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) 2>&- | wc -l | pbcopy
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be a number. It's automatically copied to the Clipboard. Please paste it into a reply.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

  • Lost most of iPhoto library/iPhoto won't open

First, we recently somehow lost our daughter's prom pictures from both iPhoto and devices. So I thought I should check to see if Time Machine was working (250MB Lacie external) and it wasn't. Thought I had better back up what was on Lacie to hard drive then back to Lacie then make Lacie our Time machine backup.  When I transferred the photos I thought I was asked if I wanted to keep the old pix or keep the new ones. I thought it meant duplicate pix but it apparently meant the whole photo file. Fortunately we have backed our photos to CD/DVD at the end of each year but lost most 2013 photos.
Next, when I try to open iPhoto I get the messsage: "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.
To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple." with 2 buttons "Learn More" and "Quit" So I downloaded the upgrader but I have a later version of iPhoto so it had no effect. It just goes round and round after that.
I'm hoping someone can help here before calling Apple. We bought the 3 year AppleCare package but would prefer to see solutions in writing first.
    Thanks

Assuming you have iPhoto 9 (11) or later  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I lost photos from middle of iphoto library, no where to be found

So one day my wife is looking at the ipad and asks where some of her pregnancy photos are....I look and they are not there..!
the photos taken before the pregnancy are there.....The photos of the birth are there.....but not a select few in between.
I check everywhere.....EVERYWHERE, not on my time machine backup....which mysteriously seems to only go back 8 months....
not in my regular picture folder where i imported them from.
I use all the recovery options from permission recovery to a full rebuild of library.
I have no idea what happened to these photos. I was not doing anything, and have not done any iphoto clean up, I certainly did not delete them.
my ipads are synched to my MBP, I do not use any cloud services.
I am ready to accept that they are just simply gone, but want to check to see if there are any others out there who have had the same problem...NOT missing libraries, NOT corrupt librarys or bad upgrades.....just mysteriously missing albums.....

Time machine should have a good copy - how are you determining that it is corrupt
If you want the thumbnails as photos right click on the iPhoto library and make a copy of the data folder and then import it into a new iPhoto library - it contains your thumbnails

  • Lost images - need to rebuild iPhoto library

I was recently in the apple store for a repair and was told that I can 'rebuild' my iPhoto library to find lost images. I can't seem to find anything in the help section on doing this. I can't remember if I've changed the directories, but I don't believe so. I've only moved the iPhoto folder to a hard drive and then back again. I can't think of anything else out of the ordinary.
Thoughts, suggestions on finding lost pictures / rebuilding the library?
    Thanks

Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

How are you launching iPhoto? From your Dock? The Dock icon may still be linked to an older iPhoto version. Just to be sure, you are opening really iPhoto 9.6, launch iPhoto by double-clicking the iPhoto icon in your applications folder. Your crash log  with the the "Library not found" error message should show the version number of iPhoto. Which version is it showing?

Your Downloads folder should be in your Home folder. Just drag it to the Dock.
If you've managed to delete it, try creating a new folder called 'Downloads'. You will probably need to nominate it in Safari or any other browser preferences as your download destination. (Safari Preferences>General, 'Save downloaded items to:' menu)

  • Losing link to photos in iphoto - will moving to aperature solve this?

    Hi all
I am an avid photographer who has a mac and a xp system. Currently I am using my macbook pro to manage my iphoto library and I am having a lot of problems in that the link between the library and the picture gets broken. I am left with the big black exclamation mark and I either have to find a copy of the picture or delete the shot entirely. I also have similar challenges when importing my pictures. So, since I got my mac I have this experience and it has made me feel like the mac is unreliable for managing my precious shots. Fyi, I do have a post on the iPhoto forum for this.
What I am hoping to find out is whether moving to Aperture or Lightroom will fix my problem. I have tried both products on a trial basis, and although I preferred Lightroom, I would be happy to use either application.
Has anyone experienced this problem in iphoto and moved to aperture or lightroom and found it has solved the problem? My fear is that moving to Aperature will just point to the iphoto library and I will have the same problem.
    Any help will be appreciated
    Tammy

    Hi Tammy
I have not used iPhoto but can help you on Aperture.
Aperture will create its own library that is not connected to iPhoto, it will allow you to bring in your existing iPhoto library along with all the metadata.
Aperture has the benefit of allowing for easy backup via the vault feature.
