Lost lots of stuff by installing xfce4

Hi,
Just installed xfce4, and lots of stuff disappeared. It happened once, so I reinstalled, tried grabbing xfce4 again, but then it happened again. Lots of commands like ifconfig, dhcpcd, iwconfig, reboot +++ are missing. What the heck is this?
Just did a reboot, and now I can not connect to my network anymore (as ifconfig/dhcpcd is .. gone?)
Thanks a lot.
- edit -
Found out that I can run the commands from /sbin/, so there seem to be some symlink problems or something. Anybody?

Same symptom here. My PATH becomes something like this:
/usr/gnu/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:.
Notice the trailing "." That's not a typo, this has happened several times.
When happened to me for the for the first time three months ago, I thought it was due to bad sectors on the harddrive which I found when trying to track the cause of this problem.
Since then, I've gone through three computers and several more harddrives. Until I finally found this post
Yes, it could be fixed by renaming /etc/profile.pacsave to /etc/profile. Thank you elliott
This "bug" has cost me several days of work and I would like to learn from it... Does anyone know why the renaming takes place? Is there anything else that got messed up during the upgrade? (experiences?)

  • Hate the update to 5.0 - lost lots of stuff

I just updated to 5.0 software.  BEWARE:  it will unload any apps that are not compatible with 5.0, like Google Maps, Facebook, Google Mobile App, etc.  I lost all of my saved places in Google maps, lost all of my calendar events (had to resync to get them back), lost my fake money in the Texas Hold 'Em app, etc.  I've spent hours getting it back to the way I like it.
And, I don't really like how texts look now -- they changed the layout.
IS THERE A WAY TO RETURN TO THE OLD VERSION???

It's probably too late now, but you should always do a backup in Desktop Manger prior to doing an upgrade.  I've never had to downgrade, but I've used advanced restore to put some settings and databases back that were messed up after an upgrade.  So what I'm getting at is that if you have a pre-OS5 backup theorhetorically you should be able to reload version 4.x then restore from a backup to get everything back. Otherwise it is probably gone.
EDIT: JSanders is correct and I didn't mean to imply that a downgrade was possible from backup/restore just that once it was downgraded you should be able to restore your settings with a backup.  Sorry for the confusion.

  • Lots of Stuff Wrong--Chief Among Them OS X Won't Boot

I did the Quicktime update that came out a few days ago... When I restarted, everything went okay until the "Mac OS X" screen. It went about a half a centimeter on the progress bar in the "Mac OS X" window and then the window disappeared and I was faced by a blue screen. I tried restarting repeatedly. Same thing every time. The "Mac Os X" window disappears. The screen changes to a lighter shade of blue after a few seconds. Every few seconds, a progress wheel like the one under the apple when you first start up the computer appears, makes half a revolution, and vanishes. I have run Techtool Deluxe, Disk Utility off of the install disk (a volume had to be repaired, but as far as I can tell repairing it didn't help at all), Mac OS X Boot Utility, reset the Pram, and booted in Safe Mode as well. Mac OS X Boot Utility said that I had a memory error--the error code was "post/0/2048". Is there anything else I can do? I don't want to have to send my laptop in to Apple.
Someone said something about a "Setup Assistant" in a reply to my earlier post, what is that? Would it help?
Also, I was just wondering if any of you knew how to get a disc out of the SuperDrive outside of the actual OS?
And one more thing: I think the sound file OS X is supposed to play when it starts up is corrupted. Sometimes it doesn't play at all, and when it does it sounds like the speakers are blown out. How do I fix this?
Man, I have a lot of stuff wrong with this my computer.

Ok, going to have to charge you for this one. just kidding.
Well, first off most problems are software, not hardware, so I would address the software first. Since it is failing so early in the boot cycle I would jump to the conclusion that the OS got scrambled. It could be as simple as one file getting damaged, but what file is the million dollar question. The quick and sure way to go on this is to boot off your Apple system disk and do an "archive and install." That basically loads a new Apple OS on there and saves all the old system files in another folder (previous system).
You need to be sure you have enough disk space free to do that. I believe it will warn you if you do not. The draw backs to that are you may have to re-install some of your after-market applications, and any system customizations you did will be gone, (not gone off the disk, just not in the new system). Depends on your knowledge as to if you can get them back out of the old system or not, otherwise you will have to just configure stuff anew.)
Getting the disk out of the super-drive, try booting while holding down your mouse button until it comes out.
the system chime, not sure about that. Is the volume up too loud? Is the speaker blown? You may want to google that one.
Ok, good luck on that, you have some work to do.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If this does not work, then you will have to erase and reinstall Mountain Lion:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • A lot of problems after installing Windows XP using Boot Camp on a Mac Book

I have been having a lot of problems after installing Windows XP Home Edition (2002).
For one, after installing Windows using Boot Camp with Mac OS X 10.5.1, I opened Windows on my Mac Book, inserted the Mac OS X Disk 1 as in the instructions and got the message: +"This package requires a newer version of the Windows installer. Do you want to update the version of the Windows Installer on your system?"+ When I clicked Yes (I had NO idea what it meant at the time), I got the message: "The required resource 'UPDATE' is missing" and the Installer quit.
How do I fix this problem?
Another problem I have is that there is no sound on the Windows XP, yet it works perfectly on Mac OS X. Is there any way to fix this problem?
A third problem I have is that I can't wirelessly connect to the internet using Window XP, yet I can on Mac OS X. I have no idea on how to fix this, and it's really messing with me. D:<
D: There are way too many problems, and I have a feeling there will be a lot more later on. Help....

If all your files are missing
You may have logged in as a different user, such as Guest. Open the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences. Your name should be at the top of the user list, under Current User. See also this support article.
If files are missing from one folder
Change the Finder view mode; for example, from icon view to list view, or vice versa.

Yes, I got that. My question was "are you using the same iTunes account to access music purchased from the Store?" I think your answer is "yes".

iTunes is not designed to do that. However, this user tip from tt2 may help you recover your music from your iPod, although it's not a simple process: Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
Ignore any references in the tip to iOS devices, the Classic does not use iOS. The tip has a list of software, including the TouchCopy referred to by tbirdvet that may assist you in recovering your music.

Help Please.

You need an external drive so you can free up disk space. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

It is probably broken. You can try restoring it using Recovery Mode, but if that fails its time for a new phone. After all, it is 4 generations out of date. See: Recovery Mode

What does it mean? I just did a fresh install of Archlinux on my 20G Hdd. So I dont think it's because I dont have space enough!?
    Thanks for your help!

Hey murpheus, I would suggest using the pkgbuild's neri put together sometime ago in this thread.  I tried the installer for beta 2 a long time ago, but that was just for testing.  Using their installer will only kludge up your system and make things messy when Arch puts out the final 4.2 release.
I'm running 4.2-rc3 right now.  I used my own pkgbuild's before neri put out his, but check that whole thread (maybe going back to page 1) for instructions on installing his.

You mean the Apple Mail app? Updated through software Update in the Apple Menu?.
Or maybe you downloaded Mail from another source?
Do you still have Snow Leopard or didn't you update your profile?

  • HT1349 how do I undownload the recent upgrade?  i lost all my stuff from the downgrade and did not know I needed to back it to my computer

How do I undownload the recent upgrade I did to my iPad?  I didn't back it and lost all my stuff.

    You can't downgrade the iOS.
As long as the apps are still available in the store, and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them, then you should be able to re-download them for free. If you download them to your computer's iTunes you could then try restoring to your backup (have you not got an old backup that might be of some use ?) and see if that restores them and their settings/content - a backup doesn't contain the actual apps, just their content/settings, so for the restore to work fully iTunes needs access to the apps so that it can restore them.
ibooks can also be re-downloaded for free, and, depending upon which country that you are in, possibly music and tv shows and (in the US some/all) films.

I lost lots of apps after updating to ios7. I hate the look of it and I think it is not as easy to use. Can I go back to ios6?

    Hi,
You cannot. It's not supported by Apple actually, so if you downgrade they cannot help you.
However, make sure that all your apps are not in a different page, so keep swiping to the left just in case they are hidden at a first glance.
You can use the App store app to download all your purchased items.

If you don't have your install disks you can get the gray disks by calling Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 They can send them to you for about $16 per disk plus S & H. Just give them your serial number and they'll know which ones you need.
Or you can get a Snow Leopard retail disk for $29.  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
