Lost Mail Folders, after 10.4.7?

Just noticed I have missing Apple Mail folders. Is there a known problem with OS 10.4.7 and Mail?

Hi Mike -
You wrote - "Suppose it's too late to know now, but were the 'missing' folders still on your HD, under ~/Library/Mail/ - that could have be remedied by rebuilding the mailbox."
I'm suffering a similar problem, with Mail being set back to Default settings. As my mailboxes are still where you suggest they should be, how can I get things back to normal?....... James

  • Lost profile and all mail folders after mac crash

disaster! my mac crashed. when i restarted and opened thunderbird, i was prompted to create an account. ii spent a lot of time on mozilla support--determined that my address book was in tact and tried several things according to other posts including moving the profile. nothing worked. i finally set up a new account, hoping to import the old folders. but now its a mess. i cannot find anything that resembles the old folders, i dont have a back up (i know), and im in over my head.
does anyone have suggestions of how untangle this. or know of support available in nyc. the folders contain years of business emails--i would happily hire someone at this point.

If you are being asked to create a new account you have lost your profile not just the mail folders. Read this article on how to attempt to recover it.

  • HELP - Lost Mail Folders - Any way to recover?

All of my custom email folders have disappeared. This is tragic, as my last backup was several months ago (yes yes... I know this is my own fault). After reading around online here, I see that the Preferences file can get corrupted if hard drive space is low. I am guessing that this is my problem, since I had Photoshop running at the same time, and only 6gig free on my 80gig drive, and remember a pop-up window appearing in Photoshop saying that my hard drive space was low.
This being the case -- just because a preference file gets deleted/messed-up, does this mean that there is NO way to recover those messages? What happened to those original files of mine that held those messages? I must have had 30 folders, and all of them are zapped from my hard drive? Not in the trash, not in the POP folders in my Library, not anywhere when I do a Find for their name. I just don't understand how they could disappear completely, and isn't there a chance that there is some recoverable data somewhere on my drive??
I also don't understand why my Junk Mail, Sent Mail and InBox mail was NOT deleted. Only the folders that I had created to file my messages. And I didn't have to re-setup my accounts or do anything like that.
Thanks in advance for any advice that anybody might be able to share.

Hi all. I sure appreciate everybody's suggestions and feedback. Even though ultimately things have not worked out for me, I have a renewed faith in the Apple community as a whole -- which counts for something.
I'll try to sum up what happened for me. First, my mail folders/mbox files were nowhere to be found on my computer (either by looking in that specific heirarchy or by doing a Find for their names). Also, I did not delete any accounts at the time of the problem. I DID delete a folder from within Mail that showed up at the top of my Mail list, named "/" and which contained a single folder named "library" (I think?) which contained a single folder named "mail" or something to that effect. Basically, several folders nested within each other, with the bottom folder being caled "INBOX" (written like that) and containing mail that I had not seen before. I selected all, dragged it to my real InBox, and then deleted the top-level folder from Mail's list (named "/"). It was shortly thereafter that I lost all of my mail folders. I've never seen a mailbox folder just add itself to the list like that -- has anybody else? And then combine that with the fact that I was running a huge Photoshop file and had maxed out my hard drive's empty space as PS used it up for memory... So basically it evidently all set up a situation that caused corruption on a huge level, and caused me to lose every custom mailbox that I had defined, but not my InBox, Drafts, Sent Mail or Junk. (Luckily my Junk mail was saved, eh? How lucky for me. ha ha)
With the advice of folks here and at the Apple store and on the phone with data-saving software reps, I tried Disk Utility to first repair permissions and then fix the disk. It did find a few things on both tests, and I did repair them -- but Mail still wouldn't pull up those folders. I also ran TechTool and Data Rescue II on my drive (TAKING HOURS AND HOURS) -- but no luck.
Nobody ever seemed to think I would have much luck, but I had to give it a shot, since losing all of that mail was going to be hard for me.
And so this afternoon, I have come to the conclusion that my situation is hopeless, and I need to get back the use of my Powerbook (I have huge deadlines that I'm really behind on now, because of all of this down-time having software check my drive).
The lesson here, boys and girls, is to not take lightly the significance of hard drive space -- and to not only backup your most important files (like I did)... but to also back up your mail folder regularly... as well as any other quirky little things that might not seem obvious, but which if were eliminated from your life, would make you sad.
So thanks again to all who posted their suggestions -- it was worth my effort to give everything a shot, even though unfortunately there was not a happy ending.

  • Just installed new OS (mavericks) and lost mail folders. any advice?

I had set up several mail folders. When I installed the new Mavericks OS they all disappeared. Left with Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Trash and Junk. Is there a way of recovering the lost folders? Some very important info in them.

  • How do I restore my archived mail folders after downloading Yosemite

After downloading Yosemite, all my archived mail folders have disappeared - can someone please help me, I really need to get this information back?

    Do you have a backup?
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then Mail/V2/Mailboxes

  • How to recover missing content of mail folders after upgrade to Maverick?

When I upgraded my Mac computer to Maverick I lost the content of my mail folders.  The folders are there but there are no emails filed in them.

    Try to re-index:
Repair & Reindex All Messages in Mail app
You may encounter an alert from Mail app telling you that the mailbox must be repaired, but you can also do this manually. This is particularly helpful if the search functions of the Mail app have become unreliable.
Quit out of Mail app and go to the Finder
Hit Command+Shift+G and go to the following path:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Delete every file that begins with “Envelope Index” (optional but recommended: back up these files to the desktop just in case something goes awry)
Close the MailData window, then relaunch Mail app to force reindexing
Like rebuilding the mailbox, the reindexing process can also take a while, depending on how large the mailbox is and how much mail is stored on the computer. Be prepared for a lengthy re-indexation if you have tons (thousands+) of messages in Mail app. When finished, try the search or perform the task that you had issues with before and things should be working as usual again.-These two solutions will fix most common mailbox related issues encountered in OS X Mail, so try them out the next time Mail app is performing strangely. On the mobile side of things, iOS does not have similar forced rebuilding and reindexing options, and thus to resolve similar issues you often have to remove the account from iOS Mail settings and then re-add it to resolve like problems, but that’s a topic for another article.

  • Lost mail folders

I have recently changed internet providers and because of this i have lost a significant number of my mail folders I've organised emails into. Some come up, but only with half the emails i have saved. Others are not coming up at all, and i now see random folders I've never made. When i search for these missing folders in the search panel some show up but i can't access them.
    Please Help!!!

Okay this is really weird but they just showed up again under On My Mac.  I rebooted twice, don't know if this had anything to do with it.  I am just glad I did not lose anything important.

  • Missing Mail Folders after upgrading to Mountain Lion

Prior to my upgrade to Mountain Lion (from Snow Leopard I had setup mail folders.  After the upgrade they were gone.  I cannot see them.  I cannot see a way to build a folder now.  Can someone assist?  Thanks.

"Folders" are now called "Mailboxes". To add a mailbox, select Mailbox --> New Mailbox. You will be prompted to enter a location and a name. Then you will see your mailbox appear in the sidebar and you can drag messages to it. You can also make smart mailboxes that automatically add messages to themselves according to a set of predefined rules. Select Mailbox --> New Smart Mailbox and enter a name and a set of rules.

  • Missing imported mail folders after Leopard upgrade

After upgrading to Leopard, my previously imported mail folders (from outlook express converted to .mbox) disappeared. I imported again with mixed results. One folder successfully imported but with 2 new but empty folders (at that point I had 3 folders on my mac). I tried to import the second file. It appeared to import, I can see the folder and number of messages but no way to access them. I can't open the folder. I tried it again with the same results. I had no problem accessing the same files prior to the Leopard upgrade. Any suggestions are welcome.
    thanks,
    Dana

I have Comcast email, and I never had a junk folder. However, if you did have these folders, go the preview window where you see all of your email accounts - The window that shows all,of your Mailboxes. Tap the Edit button to the right of the Mailboxes heading. See if the folders are in there.
You can also try closing the mail app and resetting the iPad to see if they reappear.
In order to close apps in iOS 7, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
BTW, creating a new draft email should make the folder appear again as well.

  • Lost email folders after Leopard upgrade

I recently upgraded to Leopard and in general things are great, except... there are a couple of mail folders (in Mail) that have disappeared. If I search in Spotlight for messages I know are in those folders, I find the messages. However, if I open a found message from Spotlight and click "Show in Mailbox", Mail comes up with "No Mailbox Selected" in the title bar.
Any ideas on how to recover those folders into Mail?
    thx -g

if you go to homefolder/library/mail/... you should see all the folders and files, and there should be a folder for each email account, in each of these you will find the mailboxes for these email accounts. Can you find the missing mailboxes anywhere?
let me know what you find.

  • Lost mail inbox after sync - help!

After a recent new version of iTunes was downloaded onto the iMac, the my iPhone (version 4.2.10) mail inbox was empty after the first sync.  The only way I can find to retrieve the emails is to resend them to myself.  This is at least the 3rd time this has happened, although I honestly don't recall if the other 2 were on the first sync after a change to iTunes.  I did not change any settings on the phone, but it sure seems as if I have something set incorrectly.  Any help is much appreciated!  Thanks.

  • Mail folders after moving user to LDAP from Local

I originally setup our server with Local users, rather than LDAP.  Now, we need to move everyone over (for a variety of reasons).  I'm basically doing the following for each user:
    Export individual Mail/Contacts/Calendars
Turn off Mail/Calendars/Contacts in Server app
    Delete Local User
Create LDAP user with the same UserID in Workgroup Manager
Check all services for the user under User Access in Server app
    Turn on Mail/Calendars/Contacts
Import individual Mail/Contacts/Calendars back into the apps on the client machine
This works up until I try to reimport emails.  I get the error that the "mailbox already exists".  This makes me think it's associating the userID with the old email folder on the Server.  The problem is I don't know how to either reassociate the user with their old emails, or to remove them.  Any help is appreciated, thanks!

    Here is what happened:
Original User's Document files were NOT stored under the User Name as they should have been. The User Name doc file was almost empty. (Nov 2007 thru Aug 1 2008). The main Documents folder was located in the Macintosh HD folder (not in User folder).
User Name Account got corrupt and new User Name had to be created. The Documents Folder was moved to this Account. (Aug 1, 2008)
Time Machine was not backing up the iMac because the New User had to set up TM. On Aug 4, 2008, TM was turned on and began backing up the computer AGAIN (thus process took several hours).
    My solution is:
Delete the old back-up file (+600GB) and re-back-up iMac. Keychain from the old user will remain intact and there would only be ONE copy of Documents folder in the backup (along with the incremental backups).
Would this work? Is there a way to remove back-ups prior to Aug4? How can I control TM so it doesn't consume my HD? I use this drive to store iTunes and iPhoto/Aperture libraries.
    Thanks

  • I lost mail smart folders on iMac after delete them on Mac Air

I lost mail smart folders on iMac after delete them on Mac Air with differents mail accounts.
I don't undestand, I have email accounts totally differents between iMac and Mac Air, I don't know if is an iCloud issue.
When I open Mail on Air I see a lot of smart folders I use on iMac and I thinked of a some old sync mismatch, so I deleted smart folders on Air.
Today when I turn on my iMac I see I lost ol my smart folders, but are differents computers, differents email accounts, one used for work the other at home (gmail).
Of course I have time machine backup but don't know how to restore smart folders.
Please help me, I don't want smart folders be synced beetween differents accounts
    I attach my iCloud settings...

I don't know the answer to your question, but smart folders do not actaually contain messages, just links to messages from other folders. So nothing has actually been lost. Once you recreate the smart folders, you'll see the same mail inside them that you did before.
