Lost mail in lion and air book

My 4 month old Mac Air started to freeze intermittently.  Having been told at Tech Support "oh they do that", I went to the Genius Bar, passed all the hardware tests, and agreed to a wipe and restore of lion, secure in the knowledge I had backed everything up before going.
It transpires however, that no mail on this Mac Air has been backed up.  I can only restore from the backups I have from my previous Macbook.
Which means that all the mail on this new computer has been lost, which is a pain to say the least, but how do I make sure I am backing up my mail from now on?
Any ideas?
Thank you

Thanks, we're getting closer.
I am only at this stage setting up accounts, rules, prefs etc in Mail (being a Eudora user hitherto) so couldn't use the setup assistant option when installing Lion
I am currently sometimes in Lion, sometimes in SL, so simply transfering the Mail folder later does not help now. Looking at the two Mail folders they seem to be structured differently. In SL everything is at same level. Under Lion, the Mail folder has a subfolder V2 containing most the settings and a separate folder for Lost and Found items.
I have just tried making alias to V2, naming it as Mail and putting in the SL Library, and that seems to work. But that doesn't give access to the Mail Lost+Found folder. I suppose I can live without that if all it contains are old settings.

On your Macs open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Documents & Data, then reselect that box then restart your Macs.
On the iPhone tap Settings > iCloud. Switch Documents & Data off then back on then reset the iPhone.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
See if you can open the files now without opening on the iPhone first.

  • In mail in lion and also in snow leopard you were able to click on an incoming email address and select it in spotlight , this feature in mountain lion is now gone , where did it go it was really useful?

I used to use this feature multiples times a day as it was a great way to look up all correspondance that a person had sent through.
This option is gone now with mountain lion and I am wondering why as it was great! you just had to click on an email address and you could select looking it up within mail.

  • Sync Mail between Lion and Tiger?

    Sync Mail: Lion and Tiger
I have 2 computers I use regularly: one is a G4 with Tiger, the other is a Mac Pro with Lion.
I would like to be able to have my mail on the Lion installation, but will also need to have it on the G4.
My question is: can I sync the mail from one computer to the other, so that they will both have the same contents, both sent and received..same mailboxes, same rules?
The idea being that if the Lion Mac is handling mail for a week, the G4 won't have the sent and received mails on it.
Would I transfer/copy the mailboxes from the Lion Mac to the Tiger Mac, or is there a better way?
    thanks!
    rs

    Go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Mailbox Behaviour.
Make sure these 2 boxes are checked on all Macs.

  • Lost Contacts in iPhone and Address book in Mac

Hi, I'm using iPhone 3G and just today, when I finished syncing with my Mac, I lost all the contacts I have for both. Is there a way to recover all the contacts? Or is it possible to export my contacts in entourage to my Mac address book so I can sync it in my iphone as well?
Although I'm using Mac for almost a year now, I encountered this problem just now. Please help, thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I can't fully tell from the information you have provided, but I suspect your duplicates resulted from having one set of contacts in your "iCloud "account and another set of contacts in your "on my Mac" account.
I further suspect that you have then deleted the contacts from your "Icloud "account, and thereby removed them from all devices. You now need to copy the contacts from your "on my Mac" account back to your "iCloud" account and delete the originals from your "on my Mac" account. You can do this by selecting groups, selecting your "on my Mac" group, and then selecting all the contacts within it and dragging them onto your "iCloud " account.
You might also take a look at this User Tip, to ensure you understand the differences between the different accounts in Address Book before adding the contacts back.

  • Lost Mail from Sent and Inbox mailboxes in 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 uprgrade?

I upgraded a couple of days ago from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3. I have now noticed that all old Mail messages from before the upgrade are not retrievable-- emails both sent and received. For all messages in this POP account prior to two days ago, I get a message that reads: "has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I tried to rebuild the sent mailbox, but that only made the sent messages disappear.
Any advice on how can I recover the messages? I don't know if the mailboxes were too large (they seem to be under 1GB), or have somehow have been corrupted in the upgrade?
    Thanks!

I've had the same problem. Have you fixed your problem. Any advice? Your post has not been answerded. Thanks.

  • Lost mail after disabling and re-enabling an account

Using Mail 3.6 on Leopard 10.5.7. I was setting up new MobileMe accounts for myself and my wife. She previously had mail checking a gmail account. After the mobileme account was set up on mail, I unchecked the enable account box in the gmail account settings. When I saw the inbox was gone, I re-enabled the account and saw the inbox with the list of emails return. What I did not realize until the following day is that despite the inbox list of messages (index?) being repopulated, the attached messages were not present. So, after reading some other threads, I chose to rebuild that mailbox. After that, the list of emails is now also gone and I can't find them in the trash or junk folders either.
Is there any chance for recovery of these messages?

First pause the mirroring and shutdown the servers.
If the server network address specifies a fully qualified domain name and Ports are opened, I don't think there will
    be a problem.

  • Lost Mails after format and Import

I formatted and reinstalled my machine but when opening Mail and using the import function to restore my mailboxes and e-mails from the back-up all the software did was import the mailboxes, no mails. How do I restore my e-mails from my mailboxes and inbox in my backup?

I re-imported mail boxes and it turns out I did it incorrectly the first time, everything is fine now!

  • Win7 Outlook 2007, sync mail "yes" cal and adress book "no"

    Hi folks,
I'm really frustrated with icloud on my pc. I did and tried so much already but nothing will make icloud even import my calendar and the adress book to Outlook 2007.
When I activate email in the icloud control panel it imports my "@me" account to Outlook - superb!
When I activate calendar it executes some tasks and tells me that calendar in Outlook is now configured - but when I open up Outlook nothing is there...
    same with adress book.
I haven't used MobileMe so I don't know how it has worked before. I don't get any error messages so - shouldn't it work?
One thing that i find odd: in the Outlook options I can not change the default data file to the according "@me" file. Is that normal?
    Any help will be appreciated!
    Peace out.

In Outlook, look in iCloud folders not Personal folders.

  • Airdrop is not working between my imac and air book. Why?

Airdrop is very unreliable between my IMAC and Airbook. This is a recent problem and very annoying. Rebooting both computers restores it for a while. I now have to resort to emailing documents to myself to transfer simple small pages ot PDFs. I can;t find anything on the net to fix it but others have the same problem.

This is what my Airdrop looks like.  It doesn't pick up my iPad, running ios8 (Airdrop is ON) and none of the drop down menus function.  What is the big question mark?
I am using an iMac, just upgraded to the new Yosemite yesterday (BTW, Airdrop never worked previously either, and the window looked the same as now)

  • Mail and address book snow leopard

Hi, I'm using snow leopard 10.6.8, mail 4.6 and address book 5.0.3
I want to delete addresses from address book that come from bounced back emails in mail.
I'm trying to clean up an address list that has lots of old out of date addresses.
Is there any short cut to this, doing them one at a time manually takes hours.
I'm hoping there is someway of doing this from the email itself in mail.
    Hopefully, Nick

    Hi,
I'm sorry that number was from memory. I checked the disk that came with the computer and I find that it was version 10.4.1
    Thanks for your interest.

  • I lost my address book when I installed Mountain Lion and have not been able to recover it.  WHen I type in a name in an email the address shows up, so I know it is in there.  How can I restore my address book?

I don't know how to do this.  I typed the question in the bar above, but apparently need to type it again here.  I lost my entire address book when I installed Mountain Lion and have been unable to recover it.  I know the information is in there as when I type in someone's name in an email the address always shows up right away.  How can I find the information for my contacts and restore my address book? Do I need to go to the Apple Store that is 2 hours away and have an expert help me or can I find out how to do it online for free myself?

The auto-complete in Mail addresses comes from two sources: (1) The "Previous Recipients" list, which can be viewed via Mail > Window > Previous Recipients. (2) Your Address Book (now called "Contacts").
If you did in fact lose your Address Book - are you sure you don't have "Contacts" in your Applications Folder? - It sounds like you are getting addresses from source (1).  If you did in fact lose your  Address Book (now called "Contacts" !!), you will have to restore it from a backup.

  • I just upgraded to Lion and lost my entire address book. Ack. Fix?

I just upgraded to Lion and so far so good,  EXCEPT I lost my entire address book. EVERY contact  missing. I didn't back up my address book before the upgrade (see me slap head) altho did have my contacts on my iPhone, slightly out of date, but more current than my last Mac backup. So I followed the iPhone to iCloud to Mac contact synch steps and the contacts repopulated on my Mac but WITHOUT the mailing ADDRESSES. Now addresses are also gone from my iPhone.
Is it possible to revert to the  Snow Leopard address data file? And if so, how do I do this? Or is there a better fix?

I had the same problem and also didn't have a back-up of my SL Address Book archive. But a minute or so's mucking about I came up with this workaround:
    1) Quit Address Book and in the Finder, hold down Option, click on Go in the menubar and choose Library.
    2) Go to Application Support/Address Book.
    3) In that folder you should see a file called Migration XXXXX-XXX.abbu.tbz (that's a compressed TAR file). The "XXXs" will be a jumble of numbers which from what I can gather relate to the date when you upgraded to Lion. Open it using the free Unarchiver program available for download from the App Store.
    4) This will open up a folder also called Migration XXXX-XXX. Click the flippy triangle to the left and you'll see it contains the Contact Book archives that existed before you upgraded to Lion, including any images and most importantly the Metadata (the names, addresses etc).
    5) Move the Metadata folder from the Migration folder up into the main Library/Application Support/Address Book folder. You will get an alert saying the folder already exists: click Replace. I also replaced the existing AddressBook-v22.abcddb file from the Migration folder as well. I don't use images in Address Book so I didn't replace that: if you do, you probably do want to replace that folder too.
    6) Open Address Book and gasp in wonder to find all your contacts resurrected.
Since it's an Apple app that you've been playing around with, run Repair permissions to tidy things up.
    Hope this helps.

  • I bought mc os x lion in my book air and i would like to transfer it in my iMc. How can i do it ?

    I
bought mc os x lion in my book air and i would like to transfer it in my iMc. How can i do it ?

Well, obviously the easiest way its been already said.
But u could also burn the Lion installer into a dvd maybe in caise you want to do it again in the future.
    Steps:
1-Re-Download Lion from the AppStore, if it says you Can´t, just hold the alt key while you get into the purchased tab on the AppStore and then click on re-download.
2-Wait till its downloaded and then the install window will appear, but dont hit install.
3-Go to your Application folder now, and you'll see there the Lion Installer, then right click on that file, and burn it into a disk.
    Thats it.
    Hope it helps.
But as long as you have to re-download it, make the dvd but dont close the install window and after burning it, install it
