Lost mail, spooky things happening, and more

Some very strange things happening with Mail today. First, here is my set up. I have a Yahoo account. I have two computers, and iMac running 10.3.9 and a MBP core duo running 10.4.8. (No I did not update to 10.4.9 yet.) I have Mail set to check for messages every few minutes. As today went on, I got a dozen or so messges. Though, early in the day, I realized that for some reason I was not getting some messages on my iMac. And strange enough as that was, it seemed to be explained by the fact somehow, after downloading messages to my MBP, they were being deleted off of Yahoo, which my computers are NOT set to do. In fact, all 2000 or so messages I had stored on Yahoo are now gone.
Well, if that wasn't strange enough, I responded to two of the emails I got today using my MBP. Everything went like usual, but there was some evidence that Mail was acting strange. Like, when I opened it up, it took me to some random message in the middle of my 5000 or so saved messages. Like it didn't remember where I was before like it usually does. Not so significant, but certainly strange.
I quit Mail, and then reopened it. (still on my MBP) Well, now all of my messages from today were GONE. The two emails I responded to were gone and though I always have everything saved to my sent folder, there was no evidence that I ever sent these emails.
Something stragne is happening to my mail. Anybody have a clue what is going on here? Do I have a ghost? I know I did NOT delete those messages from today. I know for a fact they were on my MBP. I know that my Mail program is NOT set to delete messages off of Yahoo.
I know, there are a lot of variables, but something is up.
Thoughts?
Thank you,
Adam

In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/ and check whether the missing messages are still there somewhere, just inaccessible for some reason. Also, have you tried searching for those messages in Spotligth?
Not sure what the situation is here, but if some of your messages have been deleted for some reason, they’re not on the server and you don’t have a backup, you may want to try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage. Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.
That said, if messages are being removed from the server despite you having configured Mail to not do so, either the server is misbehaving or there is some corruption in Mail’s preferences file, which might also explain some of the other strange things you’ve observed.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
3. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
6. You’ll have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
7. You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
8. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
9. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

Is Apple even close to a fix for the fix of the IOS 8.0.2.  i have lost all my pictures, contacts and more particulary my ability to access wi-fi.  I have switched to a Droid and not sure I would ever go back to an iPhone again.

I had the same issue until I updated my apps through iTunes. I had over 100 updates, but none of them showed on my iPod. After they updated everything started syncing like it is supposed. Go to the apps library and check for updates. After everything syncs leave your iPhone/ipod/ipad connected if the spinning arrows at the top is still spinning. It means that things are still being added. If you go to settings > general > about, you will see it loading songs, videos, photos, etc. If you back out of "about" and then go back to it you will see the numbers for each one change.

I don't think that a software update from Apple will solve the issues that you are having. You have a rogue installation. After you posted I have just done the following:
Disk Utility can verify  my partitioned Volume (including my boot disk) AND REPAIR the non-boot disks on the same Volume without a glitch. It repairs the non-boot disks containing data smoothly.
I have used Mail to send some mails from some Yahoo and Hotmail accounts to my Thunderbird client containing GMail accounts - absolutely normal.
I have iLife '09 but my iMovie '09 and iPhoto '09 open in a jiffy and I see no issues here. I have 6GB RAM (Maximum) on an early 2008 Macbook Pro with a 750GB hard drive partitioned with 120GB reserved for the Boot Drive.
I am sorry that I cannot help further but I am sure there must be a way to reinstall the software without having to revert to restoring your ML backup. I have two clones and if you have such I would attempt to do that through that rather than through Time Machine - that is of course if you have a cloned drive.
    Good luck!

  • I seem to have lost all of my playlists and more than half my songs. How do I get them back? Dont know what I did wrong? Please Help

I seem to have lost all my original playlists and more than half my songs. How do I get them back, where did I go wrong?
If I was to press "restore" does this wipe everything off my library? I always thought that you could never loose songs? That they were always stored somewhere
    in there. Please help,

If those tabs aren't in History > Recently Closed Tabs or Windows then they are probably lost.
You can try to search them in the History if you haven't bookmarked them.
Using the "Show my windows and tabs from last time" setting is a more reliable way to restore session data.

hi! I have lost mail for a month and I want to ask you to restore it from the backup.

Nobody here can restore your email for you - we're just other Apple users like yourself.
Responsibility for backing up email is yours, so you'll have to restore it from your own backups.

  • Mail 4.2 again - and more

The plot thickens, I'll try again, even though there was no answer to my rather general first posting. My Mail-application refuses to read/transfer e-mails of all classifications (personal, group + spam), I also lost the JUNK mailbox. I've reset preferences to have all mail come to my INBOX - nothing comes in. I've setup a 2nd account - same thing. The only way to read my e-mail is the inconvenience to log in to the ISP and read it there.
Any comment or help would be greatly appreciated.

The main question was whether there is only one folder named Messages in this INBOX.mbox folder? Earlier you had said more than one message -- you deleted the few others, or they disappeared?
Create a New User Account, and as that New User try to set up this one account -- set it to leave messages on the server after download. If not familiar with setting up a New User Account, see:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
This will be a useful test, and it not meant to suggest a permanent switch to the New User Account, but rather a test of the Mail application outside of your normal User Account and its existing setup data.
Btw, I assume that you are using Port 110, and not SSL?

  • Tiger Server locks up, AFP crashes, Mail Queue stops flowing and more

    Good afternoon,
I have run into a little connundrum. I have a small business which I am trying to help out here. They have a single Mac OS X Server running version 10.4.7.
    Domain is Companyname.com
    Hostname: Server.local
Only Internal DNS Zone is configured currently. We had a external zone and a internal zone configured recently but I removed the external companyname.com zone on recommendation from a Mac Guru I know.
This morning Mail stopped flowing. The only thing I could see that looked weird on the server was that IPv6 was enabled on the primary NIC. I disabled that and mail began to flow again.
One of the administrators locally went on the server after I left and tried to add a new user account.
He indicated that LDAP appeared to crash.
He tried this yesterday as well and it caused the server to lock up.
If they have reached their user limit would the server crash?
Here is the info I have so far
"I mentioned how right before you came over I tried to create a user and then the server crashed and needed to be force restarted. Well that seems to be happening every time I try to create a new user. This is a new one. I don’t know what happened. It’s possible the server crashed while I was trying to create a user this morning making the LDAP database corrupt. I don’t know. As long as I don’t try and make a new user it seems to be okay."
I did look in the logs and I couldn't readily see anything that may be causing this but I am open to any and all suggestions on this one.
    Thanks for your time!

  • Lost mail messages from inbox and drafts

I have lost all my previous inbox messages and drafts after resetting my account in Mail Preferences after a server problem. Is it because I may have renamed my account? I can't remember what I called my POP account before.

  • Weird things happened and now No Airport Card Installed.

Last night, I was playing with my iPhone 4 hotspot with my macbook unibody. Out of the blue, my macbook freeze while connecting with wireless hotspot. So what else can I do, I hard press the button and restart my macbook. Upon restart, it show NO AIRPORT CARD INSTALLED. So now I go and check my network preference, and I did not see airport listed on the left pane, I click + to add it, but no airport option. Weird... I regret with that iphone hotspot which now created problem with my macbook airport.
    Where did it gone?
Is that hard press to shut down macbook disturbed every airport setting?
Is there anyway to get this setting back without fresh install or even reinstall OS? I have tried everything like PRAM SMU thinggy, but none work. Now I checked the preferences folder i dont see airport plist anymore.
    This is so weird.. HELP!

Pull down the Apple menu, select "About This Mac", then click on "More Info".  In the column on the left look for "Network" and within that, "AirPort".  Click on that.  If you see a lot of details about your AirPort card, then there's nothing wrong with your AirPort hardware.
It might help to reset the connection settings on your Mac using these steps one at a time until the problem is resolved, recognizing that, depending on your problem, not all of these steps will make sense:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) Try to select your Wi-Fi network from the AirPort menu.
    3) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    4) In the same panel as (3), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    5) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".  Note that the fix this step implements may be temporary.
    6) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( _not_ <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
These steps may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try.  Before you try these, if you have any special network settings on your Mac for things like DSL credentials, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them.  If you got all the way to the last step, if things don't work any worse than before, you can trash the saved SystemConfiguration folder.

  • HELP - REALLY URGENT : iCal sending loop mails for an alarm, and more

    Hi.
My iCal is not working since 2 months now. Even I post here something, I had no replies. iCal is REALLY slow since 2 months, needing 20 seconds to pass a field (as to go from 20 to 00 field in a 20:00 meeting).
I reinstalled totally my Mac OS for that and it did not change anything. It's linked to SyncServer.
Worst, now I have an alarm that was set last year, to send an email. Everytime I start my laptop, iCal loop this alarm and sent 500 mails, I have to force to quit SyncServer. And if I go to iCal to remove the alarm, iCal crash !
I can't loose all my datas... please do help me !

I made that, but as my OS X reinstallation, did not solve anything
and even .mac sync does not work anymore now pff i'm getting tired of Apple in this kind of situation, nobody cares

  • Safely deleting the mail files - getting triplicate (and more) attachments

    Hello,
I've been weeding out duplicate files using Tidy Up and so far so good.  Though I've yet to get the hang of it, because it appears to be missing some files.
At any rate, I've noticed (and I suppose it's been observed on here) that Mail (which I've installed so that it apparently downloads all my gmail stuff), has put several files that are now quadruplicate or quintiplicate files (particularly bothersome are the attachments that I seem to keep downloading).
Just wanted to check if it were "safe" to delete the entire mail folder in Library from time to time, to get rid of all this stuff?
    Thank you.

If the people are using Windows, make attachments Window friendly.
    From Mail help.
Tips for sending files to Windows users
Make sure Edit > Attachments > Always Send Windows-Friendly Attachments is selected. Or for a specific message, click the Attach icon in the New Message window and select the Send Windows-Friendly Attachments checkbox.
Use filename extensions, such as .doc for a Microsoft Word document, in the names of files you send to Windows recipients. This way, the files can be read by Windows apps.
If you send a file (for example, “MyFile”) to someone who uses a Windows computer, the recipient might see two files: “MyFile” and “._MyFile.” The recipient can ignore the file named “._MyFile.”

  • I bought the iPhone 4s and my battery used to reach 32% and then the phone would shut off. Then it reached 46% and the same thing happens, and now it shuts off at 53%. And it start recharging from the percentage it shut off at. What does this mean?

    What does this mean?

My iphone 4s just developed a similar problem.  Ultimately, after a visit to the Genius Bar at which I was offered a replacement phone for $149, I took the phone to a non-Apple repair shop which diagnosed the problem as tarnished pins in the docking connector and replaced the connector for $49.
The symptoms I experienced were that the phone would not pull a charge.  I tried different cables, wall outlet versus computer USB connection, etc.  The screen stayed black until I depressed the sleep button, at which time the red battery / lightening bolt symbol would flash three times and then the screen would go black.
If your battery is dead, that icon will not show up at all.  If you get the icon, it means your battery is run down and needs to recharge, but the defective docking connector is preventing the battery from taking the charge.
