Lost Mailbox Content?

After re-installing Mail I copied the User>Library>Mail>Mailboxes Folder from a CCC back-up. Mailboxes in Mail are there but empty.  In each of the Library Mailboxes Folders there's a Messages Folder containing .emix fies which open when double clicked. Also an attachment folder and a loose info.plist. Nothing is accessible in the Mail App. Any ideas?

I have since found the following:

Make sure mail is not running.
In the mail folder there is a file called envelope index.
Pull that file to the desktop and open mail.
The mail will find your mailboxes and rebuild.
When the rebuild is done the mailboxes should be there.
If the On My Mac arrow is pointing to the right click on it so it points down.
Thanks. Problem solved.

It might be that you selected "Delete sent mail after a mont (or a week, or whatever)" in Mail Preferences. iCloud account is IMAP, so it won't keep mail in your HD. I have that problem.

  • Mailbox contents vanish when accounts modified

I can't seem to get my head around Mail's behaviour regarding mailboxes' relationship to accounts.
I recently modified my email account to reflect my new POP and SMPT servers (although my address remained the same). Everything promptly disappeared from my mailboxes. I managed to get my Sent Items and Inbox contents back by importing them from the library. This seems pretty strange: surely it isn't standard for the app to trash your archive whenever you change your email details?
Anyhow, earlier today I added a further account, using the same mail servers, but a different address. I noticed that everything recent in my Inbox and Sent Items simply contained the following:
The message from [sender] concerning “[subject]” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
I thought 'that's weird' and assumed it must be something to do with the newly created account. So I went to the 'Advanced' tab of the account prefs and unchecked the 'Enable this account' box. After doing this, all my mailboxes were empty. Panic ensued.
When I'd calmed down, I tried re-enabling the new account, and found that the newer messages still carried the strange message. When I tried to import my mailboxes as before, I found that I only imported messages older than the ones with the message.
Does anybody know where my messages have gone, or why Mail does all this strange stuff? Does it expect me to just have one account? It all seems very odd.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Peter. You’re welcome.
It is a pity that they don't always show up on a keyword search.
Searching in these forums is a pain. I often have difficulty finding my own posts.
I did not realise there was a limit on the Inbox size.
Are there limits on other mailboxes?
The limit is the same for all mailboxes. What makes you think it could be specific to the Inbox?
Are the mailboxes which I create myself permanent?
Not sure what you mean here either. What makes you think it could be otherwise?
Should I have kept the existing accounts and made new ones with
the new parameters, so that the old mailboxes remaind visible?
IMO, yes, that would have been preferable and it’s certainly what I would have done myself. The problem with this approach is that, if you keep your mail stored in account mailboxes (as opposed to custom “On My Mac” mailboxes) and don’t want to keep the old account, it’s cumbersome because you may at some point want to delete the old account, which would cause all your mail locally stored there to be lost if you don’t move it to other mailboxes first.
The benefits of creating a new account become apparent the day you want to re-create com.apple.mail.plist for some reason. When setting up the new account from scratch, Mail won’t recognize the old account folder (because it’s still named according to the old account settings).
replies to mails I send from one account may show up in a different Inbox,
even though the mail address on the reply is the same as the original
If I’ve understood it correctly, this shouldn’t happen. Mail puts in each account’s Inbox whatever it collects from that account’s incoming server (no matter what address the message was apparently sent to). Do you have any custom rules that could have a bearing on this?
But it would still be interesting to know why it happened
Probably Envelope Index became corrupt as a result of something you did, but I don’t know why exactly -- it shouldn’t have happened.
When displaying the contents of a mailbox, Mail does’t look at the actual mailbox contents. Rather, it shows whatever the index says there is in that mailbox. If the index makes reference to an *.emlx file that, for some reason, cannot be found where the index says it should be, Mail will display the infamous “message has not been downloaded from the server” error that almost always has absolutely nothing to do with what the problem really is.
what exactly are the precautions to take when using Mail.
The same as with any other data you cannot afford to lose, i.e. back up regularly.
As an additional safety measure for POP accounts, set Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server to After one week or After one month, so that messages received that many days ago can be downloaded again if needed. And, if you’re paranoid about it , you can also keep a copy of your sent messages on the POP server by turning ON Preferences > Composing > Automatically [Bcc:] myself.

  • I have suddenly lost all content in my emails on my iPad.  Any thoughts anyone?

I have an original ipad, which has suddenly ( a week ago) lost all content in the emails.  I can see who the email is from and the first couple of lines of content, but when opened the content box is empty.  Nothing has changed in the settings, or at least I haven't changed anything and there are no updates I have missed.
Any help would be much appreciated

Try turning the account off and on : Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars , then tap the account on the right, slide Mail to 'off', exit settings and go back into the Mail app, and then go back to Settings and slide Mail back to 'on'
If that doesn't fix it then try closing the Mail app via the iPad’s taskbar : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • I've lost the content in my settings, i tried to reset my ipad 2 by holding the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider but it didnt do anything.

i've lost the content of my settings, ipad 2. i tried to reset 5 times but nothing happened. what should i do? help!

Try closing the Settings 'app' via the taskbar and see if it works properly when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Settings app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Settings app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
Would you mind telling me which anti-virus package you use? It may be that it is disturbing iTunes when it tries to write out the fresh database, as it does after almost any activity with your library. I'm noticing more of this type of problem than usual and trying to see if there is any pattern. It may help to prevent a repeat of the problem if you look at the advanced options for your AV package and see if you can find a way to exclude the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.

  • I lost itunes on my computer and lost downloaded content that I payed for. How do I get it back?

I lost itunes on my computer and lost downloaded content that I payed for. How do I get it back?

When you say that you lost iTunes do you just mean the program or your content ? Have you checked to see if the content is still on your computer but not in iTunes ?
If not then do you not have a backup of your purchases on, for example, external drives or CDs or DVDs ? If you have then you can copy that onto your computer and add it back into iTunes. If you havn't then if they are still available in the iTunes store (and content is occasionally removed so you should make/maintain your own backups and not rely on re-downloading) and if you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to purchase them, then you should be able to re-download apps and ibooks, and if you are in the US music and TV shows, for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519 . If you are not in the US and you want to re-download music or tv shows then you can try contacting Apple and asking for a re-download, but they are under no obligation to let you : http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/contact/

  • Merge mailbox contents of iBook G4 & MacBook

I'm wanting to merge the mailbox contents of "Mail" Version 2.1.3 (753.1) from my old iBook G4 (Mac OS X Version 10.4.11). The message says "you can't use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X (10.6.4). I'm aware I could "forward" them through my ISP, but is there a simpler solution please.

My iBook fan comes on every once in a while when things really start to get hot. It runs for a while and then shuts off. Crashing before the fan comes on might be due to something other than just heat.
A dead fan should give an error code with the Apple Hardware Test.
Keep in mind, even a dead iBook has value for a lot of people, either parted out or whole. A marginally working one might even have more.

  • I lost the contents of folders on the desktop

I lost the contents of folders on the desktop, please help me!

If the drive is mounting, and it sounds like it is since you are booting up, and the data is worth the effort, try a third party repair utility. There are several. First choice on my list is Disk Warrior. If it is possible you erased the data that is missing then there are utilities that can go back and recover erased data as well.
However, before you do these things you should have a backup drive in hand as a place to recover the data to. No purpose in trying to fix that drive only to have it immediately fail again.
    Best of luck to you.

  • Moving local Netinfo users to OD, ideas for keeping mailbox contents please

Have a couple of users living happily in NetInfo, but now that the upgrade to Leopard is on the way I'm seeking a way to move them to Open Directory. I have no problem with manually deleting them from one directory and then re-creating them in the other, but last night's experiments with a test account revealed that this process effectively empties the contents of their mailboxes. This came as a surprise to me, I thought that WGM had problems deleting the mailboxes and that is why we had to use the cyradm bag of tricks described at osx.topicdesk.com. Please suggest a way to preserve the mailbox contents, right now I'm thinking of: 1. manually running mailbfr (again curtsey of osx.topicdesk.com) to create an up-to-date backup 2. delete and re-create the users and 3. restore from the backup so I can inject the contents of the deleted mailboxes.. Does anybody have a better idea?

    Hi,
Please try to run the Lync Server Management Shell Update-CsUserDatabase to force the back-end user database to clear its replication status with Active Directory.
    Then test the issue again.
