Lost Masters

I have a number of photos in Aperture that seem to have lost their masters. I can view the versions that I created by working on the masters, yet I cannot export the versions, because Aperture tells me that the master is unavailable. I cannot find the master in my Vault either. I am storing my masters in the Aperture Library, which I think may have been a mistake.
Could the files have been disconnected from the Masters during my Leopard upgrade? Does anyone know how to make the masters available again? Thanks.

I hope I haven't misunderstood your situation, so here goes ...
To relocate your Library file, see the last post in this Luminous Landscape thread.
Your Masters can be physically separate from your Library file. At the time of import, you can select the options for "Store Files" that are other than "In the Aperture Library".
If your Masters are already in your Library, simply select right-click on the Project Name, one at a time, and select "Relocate Masters for Project ...".
If the images which you want to move out of the Aperture Library and into physical Folders live in different projects, select those images and then choose "Relocate Masters ..." from the File menu.

  • Aperture Lost Masters after Time Machine restore

    Hello, everybody.
I have such problem. I experience some problems with mouse freeze after 10.6.3 update and tried to solve this problem by restoring my backup copy of system from Time Machine. I restored full hdd. All working ok, but Aperture lost links to Masters. I did not save pictures in Aperture library all of them imported to library as linked to original files (save in current location). I see files using Finder, I could find each file through check reference files in Aperture. But it almost impossible to do it for each file in Aperture Library (more than 20000+ files) manually. How i could fix this problem? OS 10.6.5, Aperture 3.1.1

If I'm reading your post correctly these are *referenced masters*, correct? And Aperture has lost the connection to them but you still can see them on the drive. Now you want to reconnect them.
    # Select all the images in Aperture that Aperture has lost its link to. You can use a *Smart Album* to so this. In the *Smart Album* select *Add Rule* then in the rule select missing. This will give you an album of all missing files. Select them all.
    # Goto *File->Locate Referenced Files*. All the missing files will be listed. You can reconnect them from here. It can be a bit tricky so it would be best if you read the section on this in the Aperture Users manual.
    Good luck

  • Aperture lost masters

I restored my aperture from a vault couple days ago and everything else went fine but the masters that were in the local aperture library were missing. The relocated masters were just fine.
When I checked the library using finder the masters were there alright but for some reason aperture couldn't find them. Then I had to manually import every master back to the aperture and with lift & stamp tool move the metadata from the broken master to the new master and then delete the broken master.
Luckily I had just moved almost all of the images to an external drive so had only 100+ of them in the local library.
So, I have few questions: Has anyone else had this kind of a problem? That master is there but aperture doesn't recognize it? And is there any way to point where the master is if aperture has lost it?
All the updates etc are installed.

I am beginning to think I ought to get the Apple team to do a "sticky" for me on this topic - it's the third time I've referenced it in a week...
If you've moved your library from one machine to another, or upgraded your Mac, or created a new user and are having problems running Aperture, or seeing masters/versions... the chances are that you have a permissions problem.
Here's a way to see if your library has been written-to by two different user-id's. You need to open Terminal, and change to the correct directory by typing (replace the /path/to/library with the correct location)...
    cd /path/to/directory/containing/Aperture Library.aplibrary
    (eg: I typed ... cd /Volumes/data/aperture)
then type in (or copy/paste the below
    find . -exec ls -ln {} \; | awk '{print $3}' | sort | uniq
If you get back more than one number (I get '501'), then you have a permissions problem. Note that this can take a long long time to run. It might be best left running overnight if you have a gargantuan library. I assume that's why Apple don't do it at startup...
If you do get more than one number, then read through thread http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4384572#4384572, and follow the instructions to change the ownership of the files, you'll probably find your problems go away.

  • Lost Masters/New User question

I have about 50 pictures in a project and aperture is telling me I can't do anything with them because the Masters can't be located. I've tried file>relocate masters and file>manage referenced file to no avail.
When I searched here for answers I found reference to Text Wrangler, but that seemed way over the top and confusing to me.
Is there anything fairly simple that I can do to export these files,or are they just totally useless at this point?

    Hmmm.
With that name (that's an Aperture name and not the default Nikon name), it sounds like you told Aperture to use referenced files, specified a place it should put them, specified the desktop, and then later moved or deleted the files. And you're using previews so you can see "offline" images in Aperture but they're not actually there and you can't edit them.
    Sound familiar?
Hopefully you moved them and didn't delete them. Because if you tell it to put the files somewhere and later delete them... that's trouble.

  • HT2375 Lost Mastering Presets In Logic 9

I have lost some of my presets, specifically the master preset 'Special Match EQ 1' and one of 'Telephone ........' and maybe others that I am not aware of.
I have deleted Logic Pro 9 from Applications and reinstalled from the App Store, but they are still missing.
I have the original discs for Logic Studio which I think has all the presets on it in the Jam Pack, but the discs will not run on Snow Leopard.
I have read that I can add files into Library/Application Support/Logic/Channel Strip Settings but where can I get the fies from as I can no longer get them from the origianl install discs.
I am hoping to get the whole lot from somewhere, not just specific ones as I am not sure what others may be missing.
    Any help appreciated.
    Colin

    Hi
The installers *should* run under Snow L, but if you are having issues, you could try using Pacifist to open up the installer package, find the 'missing' items, and simply install those packages.

  • Help please lost Masters How can I print copy images?

    Hi,
In order to get more space on MacBook Pro. I have been backing up and deleting images to separate HD. Unfortunately I have deleted some Master Images and cannot now find them. I do have copies within Aperture but it will not allow me to print them or export them to print them in another application (Photoshop Elements 4) Can anyone help me with a way round this please?
    thanks
    Rick

a simple solution is to drag them to a folder on the desktop. Then you can reimport them, print them open them or whatever.

  • Aperture 3 Referenced Masters on a Network Drive

I purchased a Synology Disk Station as my network attached storage solution. I was hoping to have my iTunes media and my Aperture referenced masters on the RAID-enabled network drives. I have had nothing but trouble with iTunes referencing media (extremely slow) so I gave up. Now I am attempting to relocate the Aperture masters to the network drive. According to this article, http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252 I should definitely not be moving my images to the network drive, as the drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended, but the Synology Disk Station volumes must be formatted as FAT32. Meanwhile, I did try to relocate some images. One problem I have is that if another user logs in to my iMac before me and mounts the network volume named Sally, when I log in and mount the network volume, the volume name is not the same, it is Sally-1, and Aperture cannot find the referenced masters! I imagine this would happen with any network drive when multiple users are logged into the Imac.
It seems like I have a gigantic network brick that I may be able to use as a glorified Time Machine backup drive, or is there something I can do about this? How does one have networked Mac OS drives? Connecting a drive to an Airport Extreme the only way?

    Re iPhoto on a NAS:
    Still trying to solve this.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. Simply a NAS is not a suitable home for an iPhoto Library.
Workaround: Make a dmg formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and put the Library on that and store it on the NAS.
I think I have to mirror the iTunes solution above,
This involves having iPhoto reference the files on the NAS with the Library on your internal HD or some other volume. I strongly suggest that you don't do that. Unlike Aperture, iPhoto has no tools to reconnect with lost masters (Originals in iPhoto) so should anything go wrong you'll find yourself re-connecting each individual photo in the Library with its Original +one by one+.
but figure out which folders to move
You would need to recreate your Library as a Referenced Library.

  • Lost master files in Aperture

I recently lost about a dozen or more master files.  I do not mess with the file structure.  All of the lost masters were uploaded to both facebook and picasa using Aperture's upload utilities.  I was able to semi-restore the files by dragging the preview files outside of Aperture and re-importing them, but as a "professional" app I should not have to worry about losing my pics when doing basic functions like this.  Any suggestions on cause and/or avoidance?

I am in a bit of a pickle with problems relocating original files that were imported to Aperture 3.
I had the original files in folders in documents and I decided to drag and drop them into external Iomega 1TB external drive.. which is used in time machine back up.
I can see all my back-ups going back to the start in time machine, however when I look for ( relocate ) originals they cannot be found..
I never deleted anything and thought dragging and dropping was safe..?
When I try to relocate the originals it shows the external drive online however the filepath is shown in red.. see attached image that shows this problem
Any help or advice would be much appreciated
Hope I have explained the problem correctly..
    Thanks

  • Referenced Masters on network

It appears that Aperture 3 broke support for storing Referenced Masters on an NFS share. My library is stored on the regular HFS+ drive used to boot the Mac, and in Aperture 2 I had no problems storing Referenced Masters on NFS. This allowed them to be automatically backed up when the file server did it's nightly backup.
As anyone else seen this issue, and if so, any chance you have a solution? Without this being fixed Aperture 3 is completely useless to me.

  • Tiff images broken

Confused as to why this is happening, so asking the guru's here.
Imported 31 tiff medium format scans from the imacon flextight scanner. images are fine, render correctly in photoshop and preview.
Import screen shows the thumbnails, but once the import is finished, and the files processed, i'm left with this.
    http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3807/screenshot20100302at721.jpg
clicking on any of the images results in a grey screen like this
    http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/3281/screenshot20100302at726.jpg
I've clicked the option button to rebuild the preview, nada.
If this isn't a bug, I don't know what is, thing is, it renders 80% of my work useless with Aperture 3. Going into the Aperture library, the master images are all intact, it's the previews and thumbnails that are broken, often just black squares or heavily distorted squares.
    Message was edited by: DanielC

I copied the masters and previews from Aperture 2.1.4 via the Finder and then imported those into Aperture 3.0.3. I imported the Aperture 2 previews just to use as a guideline of what I wanted the images to look like in Aperture 3. Then I manually recreated the desired versions in Aperture 3). So I 'recovered' what I needed but of course if you have hundreds on 'missing' masters in your library (that are really there but Aperture is too blind to find them) this workaround isn't feasible. I only had four missing and they were based on master TIFFs I scanned three years ago.
As an aside, this effort to recover files that I had painstakingly digitally restored from very old damaged, torn, degraded photographs was not without its benefits. Aperture 3 has tools to do this work better quicker including the new Curves and great Brushes options. Certainly convinces me I would not want to go back to Aperture 2 except to handle flaws that may still be in Aperture 3. To remind the reader, these lost masters were also lost in Aperture 2.1.4 so it was not a problem caused by Aperture 3 in my case.
A further observation, after working for several hours on these pictures, just as I was finishing, I experienced a kernel panic but when I restarted the system and loaded Aperture 3, all changes were intact so I lost nothing. Impressive or good luck? Of course I immediately updated the Vault! I had done all this work in 64bit mode because I wasn't going out to Photoshop for anything, but I wonder if that contributed to the crash as running in 32bit mode has been solid for me. I'll stay in 64bit for a while and see if all goes well (unless I need to edit in Photoshop CS4).

  • Exported masters (RAW nefs) have been lost

Hi there, hoping you might be able to help.
I use Aperture everyday to organise my photo workload as referenced files - storing the original RAW nefs in Pictures, I stress I am a basic user.
After star rating a batch of approx. 500 photos I wanted to edit I decided to make a new folder in Pictures for them by exporting the originals.
Aperture did the exporting thing and then showed up an error message that the export had failed.
So I assumed the originals would not have been moved and found when looking in the original Pictures folder that they were not there anymore. The Aperture previews are showing up the yellow triangle that the master file is missing. I have searched by date and name but think they have all been lost.
I have tried the drill disk software which found the files so I happily paid the upgrade fee to recover them.
Once recovered I could see the files in Aperture again without the yellow triangle this time, but when try exporting then they are sadly all corrupted.
I know I can try rebuilding the Aperture database but thought I should seek help first on what I should try next.
I have the original flash cards with half the images on which is good, but the other half were on a card I have since reformatted and used for other jobs.
Learning the hard way that I really should be backing up!
    Thank you

Just to clarify, I imported 2000 masters, I edited them a week later (this beng last Friday) getting approx. 500 ready for export.
After the export failed the other 1500 masters were still in the original location - as they still are now.
I don't see how only the 500 that I chose to edit could have been missing before I performed the export - that doesnt make any sense. The 500 images I exported are exactly the files that have been lost.
Sadly I can't re-import all the masters. They were shot on 2 x CF cards and I only have one available.
I have reimported the ones I do have and spent the afternoon relocating the referenced files. So thankfully I have some back but not all.
I suppose if I had them all I wouldn't be needing to ask for help here
The 'reprocess original' command is greyed out for the files still left with a yellow triangle, so I guess as the master really has been lost this isn't an option either.
I am stumped and really quite worried about Aperture now, its bee a fantastic application for me over the past 18 months but has sadly resulted in a big disappointment.
The discussion on Aperture Expert that I have been having the last few days seems to confirm that this is a confirmed bug by Apple - gutted to say the least.
Many thanks for your input though Leonie, anything else you can suggest as I am almost all out!

  • Changed disks in my RAID, Aperture lost all referenced masters.

    I have a G-Speed eS RAID system. I had 4 X 1TB disks.
I decided to change the hard disks to 2TB ones to double my storage capacity.
I retained the same volume name. I backed up the 2.5TB of data to 3 other disks and then copied it back to my upgraded RAID.
So I have a completely identical file structure. My photos were in /Volumes/GS/photo, and this is where they are now. However Aperture lost all connections to the 35000 referenced files.
It seems that there is no way to tell Aperture that old /Volumes/GS and new /Volumes/GS is the same location from my point of view (is your point of view different?). This means I have to reconnect each one of the 100+ projects manually. I DO NOT LIKE THAT. Am I missing something, or is this a nasty oversight? Don't tell me that this is a "feature" and one can only move REFERENCED masters from within Aperture...
Note: Repairing or rebuilding the library does not help.

    Your suggestion works, but
    1) You have to first select all photos in the "photos" smart album. If you do select them all, "Reconnect All" will not work.
    2) Most important, after reconnecting, I also told Aperture to rebuild my library. And it lost them again... The photos got connected to a <null> named drive which is shown as offline.
We are talking about a big deficit of reliability here...
I had a backup of my Aperture Library. So I reconnected the files again, without a Library rebuild this time.
But what if I need to rebuild my library in the future?? I AM SCARED...
No need to mention that I have lost all day moving around many gigabytes of data, reconnecting files, etc etc. This is hardly a productivity boost.
The worst part is that I like a lot the Aperture UI and I hate the alternative.
    But Aperture is unfortunately unreliable.
Just play enough time with the loupe on my MacPro and the application will crash.

  • I have several projects in Aperture that have lost their masters and cannot be printed, moved, adjusted or otherwise use. Is there a way to at least print them?

Is there a way to at least print them?

If you have truly lost the masters and have no possibility of finding them you can drag the previews out of the Aperture browser. Depending on how you have your preview settings you should get decent images.

  • Aperture has lost the masters in my library,

I'm not aware I've done anything to lose them but they appear lost, where have they gone and how do I get them back?
This is very traumatic, I do havebackups of most but not all.
    Thanks
    Paula

I'd start by running the steps shown in Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
How do you know that the masters are not referenced?   If they are managed they should be i the Aperture library. If they are in a folder on the desktop that would seem to indicate that they are referenced.
Do the troubleshooting steps and post back if that doesn't fix the problem.
    good luck

  • Lost all masters, need way to merge previews to master as replacement

    Hi all,
Recently I accidently deleted the folder that contained most of my library (I didn't think they were refenced, I assumed they were all in my library file, but unfortunately this was not true) and this is causing me a major problem.
My first step was to run Stellar Phoenix Disk Recovery, which was doing well until it broke my second external drive that they were being copied onto. I then scanned it again and put them onto a ExFat volume. However there are now issues with this volume, and the folders are not showing up in finder or Aperture. I can see the files in terminal and at present am trying to copy them over via rsync.
Therefore I need advice regarding the following:
Being able to see the files and folders containing my found images on my ExFat volume. If this works it will be very much benefical and may save the need to do the latter.
As a last resort, I may need to merge the previews into the masters, as otherwise I will no longer have any copy of the images files.
I've pretty much lost all of my images from my life, so would really appreciate some help here.
    Thanks,
    Phil

and put them onto a ExFat volume
Does it need to be an EXFat volume? Having the referenced files on a disk with a different formatting than your Aperture libray is asking for trouble because the filenames may be incompatible. If you can, move your originals to a drive that is formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled).
But Aperture should be able to see the drive and the volumes, even if it is ExFAT. I just checked, my Aperture 3.5 can see folders on ExFAT volumes, at least, after I enabled the "Shared Folder" flag. Check the permissions on your drive, Phil. What does it say?
