Lost media in iMovie

After a crash of iMovie my media is no longer attaching to the project working timeline
I can see where the media should be but the thumbnails are blank
when i drag the media from aperture back into the project i can see it again but as soon as i close iMovie it is lost all over again
any thoughts on how i can reattach the media???

To tacred, I went to a One to One session and was informed all my movies were still on my computer under the old version if iMovie. That old version is still functional. Check there first, the star icon is a different color. Once you have moved the video over to the new iMovie, there's no going back. The Creative that I spoke to is really an expert and says the new iMovie is very good and a great improvement. If you have questions, you can always make a genius bar appointment, but descibe your purpose when making the reservation, so the store you go to will assign a creative to assist you for the 10-15 minute session. Have your questions ready!

  • Itunes:  i want to find a single fix for missing music on itunes rather than using "iTunes: Finding lost media and downloads" on a case by case basis.

recently when i was creating a playlist, i realized that i was missing music from my extensive itunes (12.0.1.26) library.  i found the solution "itunes:  finding lost media and downloads" and used the general approach to find the music in finder and copy it to itunes.  i don't want to do this every time i find i am missing music.  is there an automated fix?  i want apple to develop a way to automate the fix.  can it be that this isn't a problem for many people?
i ask this now because i just looked for music i thought i had but can't find.  maybe i am wrong about having the artist, but it has happened on another artist too.  i can't trust itunes to tell me whether i have a song or not.  i don't want to keep going back to finder, especially when the instructions in "itunes:  finding lost media and downloads" doesn't actually reflect my system (os x 10.7.5).
i don't want to try to do a restore.  i have never done a restore on my mac (previously a pc user).  and, i don't know how far back to take the restore to find the old music.  and then music i have added since i lost the old music wouldn't be there.
i understand that there are so many system variables that apple would need to take into consideration with a general fix.  but:  i am assuming that apple's changes have caused my problem and feel that apple should do something to fix it.  perhaps my assumption is incorrect.
    thank you for your help.

limnos, i always have backups.  the problem is that i don't know how far back in time to take a restore because i don't know how long this has been going on.  and, if i take the restore back very far, i will lose what has been added since the music started to disappear.
i don't even know what you mean when you say "you will check there aren't any broken links (use a script from the Dougscripts web site) before you do a backup."
i agree with you to some extent about not automatically installing upgrades.  i'm still running lion and was pushed to it from snow leopard.  the problem is that i have a hard time envisioning the changes described in an update to judge whether something is valuable or not.
i have questions about your last paragraph.  i'm going to repeat it here and then insert my questions as i go.  please forgive my all caps for the moment:
"Now for your missing music, is it that there are broken links, or are things missing completely from the library?" I DON'T KNOW ENOUGH TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION.  I BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM HAS TO DO WITH BROKEN LINKS.  WHEN I COULDN'T FIND THE MUSIC THAT I THOUGHT I HAD LOADED INTO ITUNES YEARS AGO, I FOUND THE CD'S AND IMPORTED THEM TO ITUNES.  I GOT A MESSAGE ABOUT SOME OF THE TRACKS BEING DUPLICATES THAT ASKED WHETHER I WANTED TO IGNORE OR IMPORT.  I CHOSE IMPORT BECAUSE ITUNES DIDN'T TELL ME WHAT WAS DUPLICATED.  IT WAS ONLY AFTER RE-IMPORTING SEVERAL CD'S THAT I REALIZED THAT THERE WERE NOW DUPLICATES OF THE CD'S:  THE FILES I HAD JUST LOADED AND THOSE THAT I HAD LOADED SOME TIME AGO.  THE ORIGINALS MAGICALLY APPEARED AFTER I RE-IMPORTED THE CD'S.   I'M GUESSING THAT THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A BROKEN LINK  I DON'T KNOW HOW TO RECOGNIZE A BROKEN LINK OR HOW TO PREVENT ONE.  AFTER I REALIZED THE PROBLEM, I FOUND THE "FINDING LOST MEDIA AND DOWNLOADS" QUIDE.  I LOCATED THE MISSING MUSIC IN FINDER AND DRAGGED IT TO ITUNES.  DOES THIS COUNT AS A BROKEN LINK?
"If the latter and you use iTunes default settings for managing media, you can drag your media folder to Automatically Add To iTunes.  It should add anything in the folder but not in the library list but ignore things that are."  CAN YOU REPHRASE THIS LAST PARAGRAPH?  I DON'T KNOW WHAT "DEFAULT SETTINGS FOR MANAGING MEDIA" MEANS.
FOR "DRAG MEDIA FOLDER TO AUTOMATICALLY ADD TO ITUNES,"  I THINK YOU MEAN I CAN DRAG   /MUSIC/ITUNES/ITUNES MEDIA/MUSIC   IN FINDER TO THE ITUNES ICON IN THE DOCK.  AND, THAT THAT ACTION WILL REPLACE ANYTHING MISSING IN ITUNES BUT NOT DUPLICATE THE FILES THAT ARE IN ITUNES.  IS THAT RIGHT?
thank you for your time and help, limnos.

  • If I back up iMovie projects to an external drive does it take the media with it? I want to free up space and remove pictures that were in iPhoto...that were used as media by iMovie when project was under way. In short I want archive iMovie stuff

If I back up iMovie projects to an external drive does imovie  take the media with it? I want to free up space and remove pictures that were in iPhoto...that were used as media by iMovie when project was under way. In short I want archive iMovie stuff. If I pull pics out of iPhoto, and later want to drag an archived projet bac into iMovie and the pics are no longer in iPhoto, will I be able to keep working in the project in iMovie?

Very likely not, as the iPhoto's can be used for something else.
More like it took a copy, or it's referencing that spot on the drive in the editable files and most likely made a copy to create a new permanent export file.
Sample one picture and a iMovie file and see what happens.

  • Lost media for Final cut Pro X

I finished a project on final Cut Pro X and started on a new one downloading new footage.  I ran out of Disk space so I started to delete events from my iphoto library. (All is backed up)  I also deleted events and files that where being used in my previous project.  When I go to open the project they have obviously dissapeared and I am confronted with 2 different looking boxes.  One, with the usual 'Missing File' (Mainly photo's I think) with the red background icon, but also a lot of video which is replaced with a blue box with the linear look of a video and audio segment.  As I say I have all the footage backed up and have re uploaded back into iphoto.  I dont know how to make the program reconnect with the files I have reinstalled.

    Hi MC Hilton,
I found the following information that may be helpful in relinking lost media to a Final Cut Pro X project:

  • I need help.  Lost media files.

Ok, here goes. I am an idiot. There, I admit it. Now, onto my problem.
I have a imovie6 project file I wanted to back up to an external hard drive. The problem is that I did not realise it was already formatted FAT32 instead of MAC OS Extended. So, rather than reformat (I still run some of the Evil Empire software) I decided to split the project file with Split Concat 2.5
The problem is, I had no idea what I was doing. Nothing appeared to happen when I split the file even though it said all was completed. I tried to Concat the same file and it could not find the files. The size of the file appears to be similar (huge at 34.66 GB). When I tried to open the file, it could not find any clips.
I admittedly corrupted the thing somehow. I realize that. I opened the contents package of the project file and found the tilde file. After I moved the non-tilde file in the trash, I renamed the tilde file to match the non-tilde project name and had the same results when opening that file, ZERO clips, media etc... available.
Then I opened the media contents imovie folder for the project and see it is empty. I am not sure if this is normal, but the project file still says its a whopping 34.66 gb. Is anyone up to trying to help me with this?
    OK I FORGOT ONE THING:
I made a copy of the DV files BEFORE I STARTED EDITING AND ASSEMBLING THIS THING. The media files are on my external drive. I can place those in the media contents package folder in the editing file, I guess. BUT, why would the editing project still show over 34 GB in size if it is emptied of media? If, as a last resort, I replace the media files with the originals, will my editing still be saved and recorded (titles, songs, narration, etc..) or will it be like starting over? Where is the record of what was edited and titled in an IMOVIE project file?
It's my brother's wedding video. This qualifies as dumbest disaster yet.....
    Thanks for any advice,
    James

Hi lovinmymac - welcome to this forum and the Mac world in general!
Yep, you sure have tinkered with your brother's precious wedding record!!
I have no idea what the 'splitting' of the project file was all about, nor what caused the project to be placed in hidden folders.
From here on it would be pure guess-work and trial and error:
    1. Try playing the Timeline movie - if that plays, it can be imported into a new iMovie project (should all else fail). This will create a large single clip - you will not be able to re-work titles etc but at least it will allow some editing.
    2. You could try dragging the contents of each folder into the Media folder of the original project - but they may have been corrupted by the rather extraordinary process that they have been subjected to (I have no idea for example what .wvf and .snp files are - Windows extensions??). Then open the project and see if anything functions.
    Important:
You must not place imovie projects in a Windows-formatted external drive.
You must not in future tinker with the contents of the iMovie project package, or re-name parts.
Hopefully others will join in to help with suggestions.

  • Lost media after battery pull

So, on Sunday my phone wouldn't connect to the network so I tried a battery pull.  When the phone came back on, it connected just fine, but all of my saved media (pictures, music, videos) was gone.  The media was all saved on the device and we use a BES at my office.  Any chance of recovering the lost media?  Phone seems to be working just fine--just don't have any pictures or videos left.  Thanks for any advice.

    Hi
Do another battery pull whilst powered on and leave the batterry out for a minute or 2.
Make sure that the folder/s with the media aren't hidden. Go through each folder - and Media and downloads and apps are the most obvious places and ensure "Show All" is ticked in the menu.
I presume you do regular back-ups as part of your firm's IT policy. You should be able to restore from a recent back-up with no fuss.

  • I upgrade OS-X Mavericks and I lost my iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand and so on, is there a way to get it installed?

    I have a pre-installed  OS-X Mountain Lion Mac book air(2012). I upgrade OS-X Mavericks.
After the upgrade i lost my iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand and so on ....
I checked my purchased from app store. But i can not see anything.
When I want to install from app store, it wants me to pay for them.
By the way I have no any backup for OS-X Mountain Lion.
How can I have these aplication on to OS-X Mavericks without paying?
Also, can I return back to OS-X Mountain Lion and How?

You should be able to install your iLife applications from the App Store. This Apple Knowledge Base article has the directions.
OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion  If you reinstall Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion installed, on an erased or replaced hard drive, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store. After installation, start from Lion.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to compete installation of your applications.

  • Best Practices for sharing media with iMovie and FCPX

So I've a large iMovie Events directory, and would like to use that media with both iMovie and FCPX projects.
I'd rather not duplicate the media, so would prefer to import as references into FCPX.
The dilemma is that I see that it's possible to modify or move media from within the iMovie application, and therefore break the reference to that media with FCPX.
I only see two options:  (1) Never Ever modify the location/name of media in the iMovie Events file (even from within the iMovie app) since I would break an FCPX link if that media is referenced, or (2) always import (copy) the iMovie events into the FCPX Event Library making an independent original so that I can confidently operate on those media files in either application.
I'd surely rather not have to do (2 )(e.g. doubling my storage demands) to gain the flexibility of using either application to edit the video, but really don't want to live with the restrictions of (1).
Thoughts / Solutions?  What might you consider as options or best practices?

Unless there is some other reason, users should own the right to share their mailboxes - it shouldn't be something that demands administrator management (if only so that the administrators aren't swamped by user requests for sharing their mailboxes).
For true shared mailboxes, when the mailbox is created, full access is granted by an administrator.

  • Missing Audio Media from iMovie

I am exporting a project in the usual way (via media browser), but get the 'Missing  Media" message referring to one audio track I have imported via the  iTunes folder. This file, (along with a second audio file which is OK), both show in the right place when I 'Reveal in Finder'. The file is there when I check the 'missing file' path given in the error message. The project plays absolutely fine.
Earlier in the editing I dragged and dropped an audio file with the same name into the project from another folder from outside of iMovie. (Didn't actually know you could do this with iMovie, but it seemed to work !) Subsequently I needed to re-edit the audio, deleted the original file from the project and  saved the new file to the iTunes folder and them dragged it into the project via iTunes.
I have deleted the audio from the project and iTunes (several times) and re-saved my work but without success. I tried renaming the file to import and at one point the file name given in the "Missing Media" error was not the same as the file I imported.
Is iMovie trying to find my original file, and if so how can I delete it.

    Hi
Have no idea - But I do this another way and have near to Zero problem with Audio in any of my projects in iMovie or FinalCut.
    • I never use any .mp3 audio or other alient formats - all converted to .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or 44.1kHz
    • In iTunes I do
    - Collect needed sounds into a New PlayList
    - BURN this as a standard Audio-CD (still .aiff - not .mp3)
    - use the files on this CD in my movies
And by doing so I nearly never get any problems with AUDIO - I hit a lot of other's - but this is very rare to me.

  • Adobe Acrobat Standard - 22002418 - Lost Media

Need to install Adobe Acrobat Standard 9.0today and client has lost the media. Is there a download to just the media? If not, what is the method to obtain new media?
    Thank you.

If the media was registered or at least have the key, then you may be able to download it. If not, then your client probably needs to look for the $$ to buy a new copy. As Bernd says, customer support is your route.
I guess that if the client has the key code, then possibly the demo version can be upgraded, don't know.

  • Subtitle edits lost every time iMovie is closed

    Hi,
I'm working on a movie with English subtitles. Every time I close iMovie, any editing I've done of the footage itself is saved, but the work I've done on the subtitles is lost!
I'm getting pretty frustrated, especially because I'll work with a native speaker for hours to get the translations/timing just right, and then 2/3 of the subtitles we've changed revert back to how they were before.
The subtitles never disappear completely; they just change back to wrong, earlier versions.
I've tried lots of silly little things, but nothing I do helps.
Any suggestions, please? Thank you so much.

    HI
When iMovie behaves ill - I try something from this list.
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Delete iMovie pref file
    iMovie pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. (one or more of these)
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple’s Disk Utilities application)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    • Turn off Mac and disconnect Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes - will at least re-set FW-port
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09 or 11)
    • Problems in iPhoto Library can affect iMovie to crash on start-up. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time

From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

  • Lost media for final cut. Where to store?

ok so i do alot of pulling of pictures from the web and dropping to my desktop because its the quickest way to get pictures for my projects into final cut. but when i want to clean up my desktop because there is a million pictures there the media on my final cut gets lost because it can not find where i placed the pictures. so i've tryed importing them into iphoto and everywhere else but i wont work i still get missing content error. where should i bring these photos so i can clean my desktop up

    Do what innocentius said.
Then use the Relink Files command in FCP X if they appear to be missing. In fact, the relinking may not even be necessary, unless you move them to another drive.
FCP X is very clever in relinking files. Often you need only tell it in which volume the files are stored. So if you move them to a folder on an external drive, you then should do the relink command, select the drive and boom!

Working on project iMovie 10.0.2, "Quit" window popped up said start-up disk almost full. Lost entire project before I could "share" (save). Any way to recover? Re-started iMovie and tired to paste files into new project, but files are "empty."

I have the same problem. It says I have 7 projects but only displays 6. Happend after using Voice over recording.
All movie clips are still there, just not all my editing info.

  • URGENT... lost connectivity to Imovie for importing files/projects

Hi and thanks for reading this... I'm slightly above beginner technically, and have assumed a job/role video editing where video files (AVCHD) are imported from Imovie into CS4 on a Mac. Yesterday a dialogue box appeared in the clips bin of CS4, top left, stating "connectivity" was lost (I assume that refers to the link between Imovie and CS4) and to click a button within that window to restore it. Mutliple attempts did nothing.
Subsequently, I now can't re-load existing CS4 projects created from files imported from Imovie, nor can I import clips from Imovie into CS4. (The clips still exist in Imovie, but they won't load into CS4. When I attempt to import, the "import" progress bar appears and completes, but nothing appears in CS4. Also, when attempting to load existing projects created in CS4, not only will they not load, but a different project will suddenly attempt to load in place of the project I attempted to load in.
Of course, several deadlines are breathing down my neck, so any help is very much appreciated. Cheers, Norm

MIssion accomplished! Please consider this thread closed. Cheers, N

After uploading Mac OS X lion, i lost imovie and iphoto? How get it back?

If you purchased the apps from the Mac App Store, log into the Mac App Store, go to Purchases and redownload them. If you didn't and you have the CD/DVD of iLife you can reinstall the apps from there.
If you have a Time Machine backup or clone of your previous OS X install, you can use the Migration Assistant to copy over your apps.
