Lost movie rentals

I recently rented 2 movies using Apple TV.  After renting and downloading the movies I lost connection with Apple TV and had to restart. Now the movies are no longer there.  These 2 movies were downloaded and rented on Tuesday March 13, 2012. I also received a receipt from itunes confirming my purchase.
Can I get these rentals back?  Why di they disappear?

AppleTV 2 and 3 (the new one) do not have any permanent storage.
They are designed as streaming devices from the internet or iTunes on your LAN.
I would advise against renting more than 1 title at a time (unless in iTunes on computer to play on AppleTV).
AppleTV 2/3 download rentals on the fly - if your connection is fast you'll be able to play immediately (>2.5Mbps for SD, >6 Mbps for 720p HD and >8 Mbps for 1080p HD).  Now while the AppleTV may buffer an entire movie into solid state memory, this is not protected so doing other things on AppleTV that use memory can flush the downloaded portion.  If you rent more than 1 and they're HD I supect they will be competing for available storage space.
Somehwere in Setting there used to be a check for downloads or purchases type option.
The rentals should in theory still be there - you have 30 days to view, however once you start you get 24 or 48 hours to finish viewing depending on where you live (24 hours US, 48 hours UK).
If you have a slow connection you may be better off renting SD or 720p HD, or alternatively rent in iTunes on the computer as they will be stored on the computer until they expire (in Uk at least the store often only has SD rentals for odd reasons with teh HD versions available on ipad or appletv).  Once the rentals have downloaded on the computer providing Home Sharing is active they should then be playable under the Computers menu on the AppleTV under a rentals category.

  • Lost movie rentals on iTunes

I have rented two movies from iTunes in the past 24 hours and got part way through both and then they have gone.
I have tried checking my downloads with no evidence of rentals just purchased movies.
It was giving me a dialog box stating an error with iTunes but it seems that the error has not been amended because despite iTunes now being available the movies are no where to  be found. Can anyone help?

What device did you rent the movies from.
Keep in mind you have only a 24 hour rental period from the time you first start watching the movie.

  • HT1657 Lost Movie Rental

I rented a movie on iTunes, but had to restart my computer mid download.  Now it's nowhere to be found.  How do I recover my rental?

    Found it in my account!

  • Lost movie rental

So I tried to rent a movie and it downloaded OK and it is listed in my purchase history-but it just disappeared. There is no "rented movies" tab where there usually is..and there is no trace of it in itunes other than the purchase history. I had just downloaded it today and hadn't watched it so there is no way it expired. Anyone have any ideas?? Also is there a phone number I can call for support-I emailed support but its been about 24 hours and haven't heard anything.

Yeah fill it out on this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/browser/
They should allow you to re-download the movie.

  • Apple TV flawed - lost HD movie rentals after factory restore

I had 2 HD movie rentals downloaded and stored on my Apple TV. This evening when we went to watch one of them, every time I chose the Movie Rentals menu it would take me to the screen that shows my rented movies (and how many days remaining to view them) but I could not select either of them. This was shortly followed by the Apple logo on a black screen, and after a few minutes it would bring up the main menu.
I restarted the Apple TV a few times, but the result was the same each time.
I could not move the movies to my Mac because HD movies cannot be transferred.
My only option? I did a factory restore. I then went to the Downloads option in the Settings menu, expecting it to begin downloading the movies again (and wasting a huge chunk of my monthly bandwidth allowance), only to discover that nothing happened.
Why have Apple designed the Apple TV to 1) force HD movies to stay on the Apple TV with no way to backup 2) no way of retaining rented movies if a Factory Restore is required 3) no way of downloading the movies again (potentially at great expense - additional bandwidth beyond my standard allowance is quite expensive).
Has anyone else had this problem? Has Apple's annoyingly temperamental Apple TV not only wasted my time and my bandwidth, but also my money?

    Thanks for the replies.
Of course I knew that a Factory Restore would wipe everything - but having already run a 'diagnostics' (which found no problems), tried restarting the Apple TV, I couldn't see any other way of getting it working again (I've also had regular problems with having no image on screen when waking the Apple TV, so I was overdue trying a Factory Restore to see if it would fix it).
Of course, if I was going to erase and restore my OS X intallation I would make backups - but this isn't an option with the Apple TV's movie rentals - especially HD movies as they cannot be transferred to any other device.
I did however assume that Apple would have some mechanism in place to keep track of things - eg. movie downloaded - yes, movie watched - no, movie deleted - no, movie present - no =>action - allow user to download again.
Perhaps they could even allow some form of 'hidden' sync with your iTunes library - where even if for some reason they don't want you to watch the movie on your computer, that it could store an encrypted backup, so that in the even of an Apple TV factory restore, the content could then be transferred across back to the Apple TV with the first sync.
I've logged into my iTunes account an 'reported a problem'. Unfortunately it's been a couple of hours and I've had no reply (if they're not going to allow these problems to be overcome automatically, they should be quicker with their response). Also, of the 2 movies that were on my Apple TV, one was downloaded 2 days ago, and the other about 2 weeks ago, and only the most recent had the option of 'report a problem'.
Obviously a situation like mine is uncommon - but they really should clean up all the rough edges with the Apple TV to avoid these problems.

  • Ipad 2 Lost tv shows and movie rental after update 6.o.1

Yesterday  I synced and updated the software on my ipad 2. (it had been a while). Before the update I had 2 movie rentals, and 2 seasons of a TV series, which I had purchased and downloaded from itunes. Before the update, I would go to the "Videos" app and they were all there. After the update, the only option in the "Video" app is to watch Music Videos, or go to Store. The top banner only says Music Videos. When I look at the Storage on my ipad, they are clearly taking up space, and if I try to "sync" them again, itunes tells me I do not have enough space.
I have tried to "search" for them and they are not found.
    Help!
    Mandy

"Sync" them from iTunes on your computer... is that what you mean? And it is not working because you do not have enough storage capacity left?
Go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Videos. Do you see the movies/TV Shows in there?
Have you tried restarting or rebooting the iPad since this problem arose?
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Movie rental LOST :(

I downloaded a movie rental to my Ipad and later updated IOS, but now the rental doesn't show up... any fixes?

I just rented a movie and a new category appeared in Library for Rentals.  I quit and restarted iTunes and that category is no longer there and I can't find the movie anywhere.  We love the iPod, but iTunes is just a misery.

  • Movie rental refund

I just purchased my first ever movie rental on iTunes and am MASSIVELY disappointed. My wife had never seen Back To The Future (I know! Where has she been!) so I paid the £3.49 and rented it for the night so we could watch it on our 42" plasma as we do with all the other films I download from other sources.
After waiting 45 mins for it to download, we played the first three seconds of the Universal logo before being told "you cannot play protected movies on this display" - this was the iPad error by the way NOT the plasma. The plasma is just a display and doesn't have a computer attached, any error messages were displayed on the iPad. Why can't I watch the film on the display I want to? If I had known this I would NEVER have paid and downloaded the movie.
How can I get my money back on this rental as I certainly am not going to show my wife her first Back To The Future experience on a tiny iPad screen!
If I can't get my money back then fair enough, good luck Apple, for the sake of £3.49 you have just lost a customer forever.

No. Once you accept the conditions to pay for the movie the that is it.

  • Movie Rentals added to my wish list no longer have a rent button

Moives I have added to my wish list to rent later still show in my wish list, but when they are selected the "rent" button is no longer there on some of them.  What would cause a movie that was available for rent to no longer be available?

I just went through my wishlist and removed several movies that appear to no longer be available for rent. Sorry Apple. You and your studio friends just lost about $50 I was willing to give you, just from my current wishlist. Most of the movies I wanted to rent were definitely not "buy worthy"... but I would have been worth spending $5 to rent. Now that option is gone, and so is the revenue you could have gotten on me for those movies. Seems weird I can't rent movies from your movie rental service, and most new releases seem to disappear within the few weeks it usually takes for me to catch up and have some time to view them. Anyway Apple. Your loss.

  • Re grant movie rentals?

My apple tv crashed and I lost 3 movie rentals. Can I get them back?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
Are you sure they are lost, a forced restart of the tv shouldn't result in data loss. However if you are certain, go to your account purchase history, select the titles you lost and report a problem.
