Lost MultiTouch on Penryn MBP

Greetings -
Two month old 2.5 Penryn MBP. Everything fine. Apogee Duet causing a few odd crashes out of Logic Pro and iTunes that were never there before.
Now three-finger swipe does not work. Funny how used to it I've become! Everything is enabled in preferences. It just flat-out doesn't work anymore.
I did a search and saw posts recommending deleteing Preference /plist files as well as pulling the battery and AC and holding down keys and power button for 10 seconds, etc. Their problem wasn't the same as mine and I view the plist files kind of in the same light as Windows Registry and figured I'd ask before randomly deleting them!
Thanks to all. 95% of my questions are resolved using the search function under these discussions. In fact just an hour ago I "fixed" an iChat problem plauging my wife's MacBook for the past year or so (needed to change the port to 443 from the default!). Gotta love it!

RE: +view the plist files kind of in the same light as Windows Registry+
Not exactly. Similar in intent - storage of settings/options information. But, .plist files are more 'innocuous' that the Registry - an advantage of this is that corruption to one of these files will normally only affect a single application, whereas corruption of one of the Registry hives can have system-wide effects.
You can safely delete a .plist file, and all that will do is force the application to create a fresh one the next time it's launched (this includes the Finder). Any custom preferences you had set will be 'lost' with the return to the default .plist file. So, it's safe to delete the appropriate .plist files from ~/Library/Preferences.
Hope this helps...

  • Uneven Brightness (new 17" Hi-Res Glossy Penryn MBP)

Finally got the new Penryn MBP I ordered the day they came out, and it seems to be working fine, but the only "issue" I see is the back light seems uneven. Its only noticeable on a white/light color solid background. Just wondering how common this is. I had to wait almost 3 weeks to get it, so I assume the wait would be just as long or longer to get it fixed. Just a bit of a let down, especially after having to wait 3 weeks for it.

Obviously, quality control is something Apple feels it can afford to do without, as they are usually quick to replace these defective products at the counter.
This statement is blatantly false. Granted lemons do slip through the cracks, and sometimes it is impossible to make a system crackproof when dealing with so many products. Just a single 128 MB RAM board has one billion parts. That's as many as the Saturn V Rocket! Apple's sales of notebooks have gone through the roof, and if you do get something in warranty that obviously needs repair, do use the warranty to take care of it.
Opened a second 2.4 15 Inch Penryn and found the LED on this one had a gradient that darkened on the far right. They
Disassembling the machine as you have done basically exposes the machine to static electricity and other problems, and frequently is noticeable because of the difficulty of reassembly. I would let the warranty people take care of it, or the store return policy take care of it.
Apple's quality still is the best in the industry, if you read Consumer Reports.
So don't let the preponderance of issues reported on this board make you think they all have issues. Quite the contrary many without problems never have reason to report here.

  • New (Penryn) MBP instantly ejects DVD -R DL media

    I recently bought a 2,4 GHz Penryn MBP with a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-867 (Firmware: HA13) optical drive. Profiler states it CAN burn DVD-Write: -R, >>>>-R DL<<<<, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW media.
However when I insert a brand new FujiFilm -R DL (I tried 3 of them) - the drive spins up then down and then ejects the DVD without any error message whatsoever. I have extensively searched the Forums, however I can not find my specifig problem answered anywhere.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in avance,

i have the same machine, (early 2k8 mbp) and i can burn dvds and cdrs but NOT dvd-dual layers! It craps out usually at the verification process with this message (in console)

I have YET to be able to burn any Dual layer disks at all - at least 9 bricked in a row so far.
So, i called applecare, got the machine sent in to be "fixed". They had it for TEN days, and then returned it to me with a "we couldnt duplicate the problem" message! I then tried to burn a dual layer yet again getting a wonderful coaster... According to the console it doesnt appear they tried using dual layers when they tested.... But anyway, zapping P-RAM, making a new user, the usual stuff didnt fix it. Tried 3 different companies disks too. Does the same in Disk Utility, and Toast. No dually layered love... period.
I havent called back in, because im afraid id be tempted to reach through the phone and strangle and innocent... i think ill try a clean install next, because i cant afford to go another ten days without it.

  • USB ports on Penryn MBP

I have a 250GB WD Passport HD that connects to a single USB port both for data and power.
It does NOT work on my 2.4GHz Penryn MBP. I tested the drive on other notebooks and it works flawlessly.
My question is: are the USB ports in current-generation MBPs "underpowered"?
    mac.cardi

    Hi Mac Cardi:
I just had a different experience. I just replaced my 2.16 Core 2 Duo 15" MacBook Pro with the latest. I have a little 80 gig Lacie (Porsche Design) external drive that needed both USB Ports on my old laptop to spin up.
The current Penryn MBPro I just got does the job with just the regular single USB cord; it doesn't need the extra one to provide power. By the way, this works with both the right and the reputedly-weak left USB Port.
It was one of the first things I checked out on this new machine, because I'm an Apple Certified Macintosh Technician and the diagnostics for the newest Macs must be run from a USB drive. They're too big to burn to a DVD.
So these ports don't seem "underpowered" to me. But maybe your Western Digital Passport needs more current than my little Lacie. YMMV

  • GPU? Graphics drivers? Question for Penryn MBP owners.

I have a Penryn 2.4 MBP (current generation) and, after one graphics update and several os upgrades, I am still experiencing bad graphics.
Some times, very rarely, I still have corrupted text. It is self-healing, after a while it goes away. If I try and take a screenshot of the window with corrupted text, the screenshot is ok.
I have still flickering and big, white boxes in on-line videos, like the ones on youtube. Even in this case the problem appears to be self-healing. It goes away after a while and I do not think that it is heat-related, sometimes it happens when the components are not very hot.
Scrolling sometimes is bad. For example, in single-column Finder window, sometimes I cannot see the 1/3 bottom part of the column, which appears empty, when I scroll.
Frankly all these problems are absurd and I started thinking that they are hw-related. It's impossible apple is not able to offer stable and good graphics drivers/subsystem. Anyway, I have no problems when using non-apple applications, like firefox (but in Firefox I still see big white boxes in videos).
    What is your experience?

This may be an old post, but for those still looking for an answer you can get the 13.12 (December 2013) AMD graphics driver from https://www.dropbox.com/sh/915fpdtgbgoksct/kOY7bKHgKq Select "Download->Download as .zip".
I only modded the driver for the windows 7 64-bit install, so if you using windows 8 under bootcamp you'll have to follow the included instructions yourself.
Please let me know/like this post if this works for you. (It would be great if you could report whether it worked based on using Win 7 or Win 8)

  • Installed 10.8.1 and lost display on my MBP

I upgraded to 10.8.1 on my mid-2010 i5 MBP and once I logged in following the reboot, my display went black except for one line at the top. Resetting the PRAM seemed to be the only thing that got it back. Reboots alone did not help. I may back out 10.8.1 since it happened again later and, again, resetting PRAM seemed to get it back. It's been running fine for the last hour now. Not sure what may trigger it again. Anyone else see this?

If you backed up your phone before the update you can use itunes to restore from backup and should revert back to how everything was before see here

  • Lost multitouch gestures on E530

    Hiall,
This is my first post in these forums. I am quite satisfied with my E530, which I have for two years now.
But I suddenly can not use multitouch gestures on my ThinkPad E530 (Windows 8.1). Going into the Control Panel I cannot see any entry for Touchpad or synaptics. Also, in the Device Manager, there is no touch pad in the "Mice and other pointing devices", only mouse and ultranav drivers are visible. basic pointing is possible though. but I can't scroll with two fingers, which I used very often.
Also, there seems not to be a separate driver available on the E530 driver page on the Lonovo site. Should I try (re-)installing the chipset driver? Any other idea?

Gestures were introduced in GNOME 3.14 for touchscreens, see https://help.gnome.org/misc/release-not … es.html.en. Best to use those standard gestures I suggest as they are also coming to touchpads in GNOME 3.16. Read more at http://blogs.gnome.org/carlosg/2014/09/ … proaching/.

  • Penryn MBP 2.5ghz, or 2.6ghz?

    Hey All,
I am looking to buy a new MBP, today even.
The salesman at The Apple Store told me the difference between the two is negligible. (So much for up-selling training...)
If the 4% increase in CPU speed translates to time, a 4:00 hour render would become 3:50.
It might not translate that way though.
Can anyone think of any other reasons to spend the extra $250.00 for this .1ghz upgrade? Resale value, would probably be negligible...
Has anyone found any benchmark testing of these two side by side?
I appreciate any any help, anyone can offer. (I think...)
    Regards,
    Richard

Thanks for the reply. I probably average around 15 hours worth of renders a week, some weeks could have as many as 25hrs. Rarely more, but I am only working in SD.
So, even with 20 hrs worth of renders, 4% improvement, (if it directly translates), is not even an hours savings. Which can often be done overnight.
    +"today even"+
It does suck about the custom order, but as I do mostly video, I am also sold on the 7200rpm drive.
And again, I am still only working in SD. I imagine my rendering time would quadruple once I switch to HD. Am I wrong?
HD footage, I would guess, would need the extra 2400rpm, which is custom order as well.
So, no matter what, I wont have one for a week at least. But, the longer it takes to make the special order, the longer it will be before I have it.

  • Penryn MbP logs out by itself

    Hello all !
My brand new MbP logs off just by itself when idle, just as if I pushed the power button. I reset PRAM, PMU, did the usual and extensive Onyx sweep, but the problem remains.
Anyone know about this problem and is there a solution to it?
    Thanx and best regards,

  • Lost native resolution 1920x1200 mbp 17"

The native resolution on my mbp 17" of 1920x1200 is no longer on my resolution list and all of the remaining display settings are not good.  Any ideas?  Not sure why it is no longer available.

The native resolution of the new 17" MBP is not the same as yours. Your older model's resolution is less than the new model. This has nothing to do with version of OS X.

  • 15" Penryn MBP freezing, apps crashing

My early 08 MBP completely froze eaerlier. The mouse pointer wouldn't move. Gave it a hard reboot, system took a long time to boot, and a long time to log me in. All my apps that normally start on boot crash (including QuickSilver, etc).
I tried memtest86+, didn't find an issue. Took out the memory modules, didn't improve anything. Reset the PRAM, no improvement. I'm not hearing any mechanical noises from the hard drive.
    What should I do next?

The restore from the time capsule didn't really help. Things worked fine for about 10 minutes, and applications started hanging again. Next, I did a fresh install of Leopard and ran the migration assistant to get all my stuff back form the time capsule. That seems to have done the trick.
Go figure, not sure exactly what was wrong with my OS install.

  • Penryn MBP bus speed?

Does anyone know if the 17 inch MBP/s FSB has been bumped up to 1066 yet if you get a 2.6?
The 15 inch on the spec page said 800 fsb but I could not find it on the 17 inch MBP.

My wife stole my MBP within two weeks of its purchase and now her original lappy(a pc hp that she said was too heavy after she hammered me to buy it is losing its DC jack for the third time. Based on its current rate of demise I have between 3 weeks to two months of use. That will put me in the serious "need to buy" market between June and July. I have already been looking hard at refurbs to. Problem there is, after my education discount, the price advantage drops to only 300 bucks and apple care is 239 instead of 339 so those prices get too close to brand new. All she is demanding this time is a new iphone so that is a decent green light. I know the montevina will be released soon so that makes me real nervous as this is the same time of year I bought the core duo a month or two before the core2duo came out.

  • Penryn MBP and Tiger?

A friend of mine asked me this, and I want to know.
Can the new Macbook Pro (penryn) run OSX Tiger without problems?
    Regards,
    MS

While you cannot install it using the install discs, it will run if you have a pre-made master disk image created with Disk Utility and applied to the computer using NetRestore.
I did it just last week as we got new machines in that "required" Leopard but we did not have our master Leopard disk image created so I figured I'd try and image the new computers with the Tiger image.
While it did work, and the computer booted fine, some controls were missing. The screen darkness and the volume could not be adjusted, but everything else worked as it was supposed to.
So yes, it does work...if you have a prior setup to image it with and don't mind a few hardware features not working.

  • Lost install disks for MBP 13"

I bought a new MBP 13" 2.53GHz but unfortunately the original install disks have gone missing from the hotel room where I stayed. I contacted Apple Singapore and they told me they could not replace the disks and suggested I buy a Mac Box Set. I am worried that these may not contain the Windows 7 drivers in the event I want to install Boot Camp and Windows 7. What can I do in this case? Will an original Snow Leopard OS disk have these drivers? If not, where can I download them?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Wow, thanks a lot, Neil. I asked because the last time I installed Boot Camp for an older unibody MBA 2.2Ghz, the drivers were absent from the Leopard OS disk and it was such a pain trying to get those drivers for windows. I do not have a habit to carry startup disks with me when I travel...

  • Brand New Penryn MBP w/ Aperture Coming - Delete iPhoto?

    Hello All -
I have a brand new MBP coming next week. It will be my first Mac in 20 years! My wife has a C2D Macbook and she has convinced me how great they are.
I ordered Aperture 2 and do a ton of photography. Should I blow away iPhoto so that everything will be nice and clean in a single application? I really dread having pictures referenced in more than one application.
This is my only chance to do everything right the first time!
    Thanks!
    Tommy

I still use iPhoto to store screen shots that I use in Keynote for presentations. I also use it to make a family calendar every year. I don't keep my photo library in it, but I can reference my Aperture library right from iPhoto when I want a feature that iPhoto does well, like calendars and cards.
