Lost music and made a mess of everything, what do I do now?

Ok, now I'm in even more trouble. I tried to download iDump, once done, I had a bit of trouble trying to copy the tunes from my iPod. I did eventually work it out (sort off). I'm only new to computers and iPod/iTunes. My iTunes purchased music as well as CD copied music was initially saved onto my c drive. I later tried to move iTunes to my external hard drive. My computer was recognising the iTunes on my c drive but not external hard drive. This is what I did: prior to downloading iDump I uninstalled iTunes and restarted all over again, but this time saving iTunes to my external hard drive right from the beginning. I did have the music on my iPod and the music was successfully saved on my external hard drive. I then needed to transfer my music from my iPod to iTunes - this is where I downloaded iDump. After some fiddling around, I managed to get my music onto the iTunes Library. I thought it would be safe to sync however, I have now no music on my iPod. Some music is in the iTunes Library however most of it has an exclamation mark against it. Some of the music in my iTunes library (38songs)are repeated but without an exclamation mark and I have been able to drag these back into my iPod. If I try and play or drag the other songs to my iPod, I get a message telling me that the original file could not be found. All my music was saved to my external hard drive but now some music is missing and/or not recognised in iTunes. I really don't know how to resolve this or where to start. All I know is that I have made a huge mess of this and I am left with only a handful of music. Any instructions or guidance on what to do now would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
(Its a long post, but I need all the help I can get!)

Ok, I was going a touch nutty, trying to work out what to do. I just kept at it trying everything I could think off because I wasn't getting any replies to my question.
This is what I did:
I thought I had lost my music after using iDump. Though it wasn't showing up in my iPod I had successfully saved it on my external hard drive prior to performing my mess.
With the music that was already saved on my hard drive, I just moved that folder to my desktop and renamed it 'DONT TOUCH'
I performed a search on my computer and on my external hard drive. I searched for anything that ended in: .m4p
Once I found all these files I placed them in one folder and saved it on my external hard drive.
Then I went into iTunes and made sure I had the latest update. All my music was showing up with exclamation marks. (iTunes simply wasn't recognising where my music was located).
I deleted all the songs from iTunes then made sure that I had the latest update again. I also made sure that 'enable disk use' was ticked. (You find it in the 'summary' tab at the bottom towards the left where it says 'options' in iTunes)
Then in iTunes, I clicked on 'file' and then 'add folder to library'. When clicking on 'add folder to library' a window pops up where you browse for your music folder. Once you find where its located click ok.(On my computer my music was saved in my external hard drive 'My Book E:')
Then from what I remember, my music was back in iTunes so all I had to do was get it back onto my iPod. Then I shut down my computer and performed a viral scan of my whole computer.
Finally I clicked on the 'sync' button once my iPod was connected to iTunes and presto! - all my music was back on my iPod and all the music in iTunes had no more %!#*ing exclamation marks.
I also made sure that from this point on, all my music which I purchased through iTunes was to be automatically saved to my external hard drive. I did this by:
* In iTunes click on the 'Edit' tab
* Go to 'Preferences.....'
* Another window should pop up - click on the 'Advanced' tab
* Now click on the 'General' tab - this is where you will find the iTunes music folder location. Simply changed it to whatever you want it to be now. (I set mine to my external hard drive:'My Book E:' instead of my computer.
Lost count of how many times I checked and rechecked that my iPod and iTunes where in working order, I finally deleted the folder named 'DONT TOUCH' which I initially saved on my desktop.
Hope this helps you.

    Hi Louis
It is possible, you just need one of those programs - search google, names like irip etc.
Once you have the program it will bring everything up again in your itunes program, I found even deleted songs that were brought back. Fantastic feature...
Don't let anyone say you can't! it is possible, just something your not suppose to do with apple.

The first time an iPhone is connected to iTunes that is used to sync with another iPhone or iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device or to set up the iPhone as a new iPhone.
The former does as provided - it transfers the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device to the iPhone replacing all data on the iPhone that is included with the backup being transferred. The latter does nothing allowing you to make your various selections for the iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
This is designed to be done right away with a new iPhone.
If you don't have a backup for the iPhone with iTunes on your computer and don't have an iCloud backup that hasn't been updated since choosing to transfer the backup for your iPod Touch to the iPhone, the data that was on the iPhone is gone.

I used to be able to play music and podcasts in a single playlist (with iTunes DJ), but now can't seem to do this.  Is there a way around this with iTunes 11?

You are freaken genius!  Apple should update their instructions on how to give playlists, because the old way no longer works.  And people tend to give gifts around this time of year.  Anyway, mahalo niu loa (thank you very much)!

  • My iPad seems like it has a virus. I rebooted it AND restored it and they did not work. What do I do now?

My iPad just starting acting strange as if someone is controlling it. It slides through screens at the home screen, it moves the screen up and down, it opens and closes albums in music, and it pulls up the keyboard and starts typing on its own in safari and brings up search items or websites. I thought iPads couldn't get viruses but this definitely seems like a virus. I rebooted it and even restored it back to factory settings and it still does it. What can I do now?

  • How do I retrieve lost music and apps?

While updating my iPod touch I lost all of my pictures, videos, music, and apps. How do I restore all of this lost memory?

If you still have a backup, you can restore your device from that backup.
Apps and other media can be downloaded again for free, they are not part of the backup made by iTunes:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Backup + lost music and videos

I just purchased and installed the 2.0 software upgrade and lost all of my music and videos from my iPod Touch. I was under the impression that the backup that it performed was actually backing up what was on my iPod and that I wasn't actually going to lose everything. Did I completely misunderstand what was going on? Some of the songs and videos that I had on my iPod are on an external hard drive that has been corrupted and I don't know if I'll be able to even save them. I'd like to think that I haven't completely lost everything. Is there someway to access this "backup" that was performed? I'd like to think I didn't just pay ten dollars to wipe out my ipod.

Unfortunately, you pretty much paid $10 to wipe out your iPod. From what I have heard on these boards, the people who did get everything back during the restore were those folks who had all of their media in their local iTunes. Folks like you and me who had content on our iPods that was NOT in the local iTunes did not get back any media during the restore.
For us, the backup only backed up settings, notes, that sort of stuff. Did you get back your settings, at least? If you did, then I would say there's no way to get back the music. However, if you didn't get back anything - no notes, settings, bookmarks, etc - then maybe the restore didn't use your backup for some reason, and it's possible to find that backup and re-restore with it. Hopefully someone else can answer that bit for you, as I'm not sure how to select a specific backup to use for a restore. I know it's been posted about on here, though, in the past couple of weeks.

  • Iphone crashed lost music and now computer won't recognize it

    Hello everyone!
So I was updating my iphone 5 (iOS 8 for sure, i think 8.1) and was adding some music when i thought i might not have enough space on my iphone. So on my iphone I deleted music and a few movies FROM the iphone, not in iTunes. My music app froze and then crashed. When i went back into the app all my music was gone except my 120 odd songs I actually purchased from iTunes. This has happened to me before and the fix was just to leave the iphone plugged into my computer and all the music would return in 20 odd minutes or so. Well after this crash my computer wouldnt recognize my iphone... some of my music came back but not even close to all (went from 5000 songs to right around 1200). Ive tried all the fixes ive read about. Restarting iphone and computer, re-installing itunes, tried a different cord, and a just about every fix possible using the device manager (i use windows 8.1). Something interesting about after it crashed was that the syncing arrows that spin around in a circle in the top left of the phone while syncing is taking place were spinning for like 12 hours after being unplugged from my computer... weird stuff. The only time I can even get my computer to recognize my iphone is even plugged in and is trying to connect is when I leave it plugged in and do a hard reset (holding down home and screen lock button) and then it recognizes it for like 10 seconds - says error code 43 and then will never reappear until I do another hard reset. I really dont know whats going on and as far as I can tell, im the first to have this type of problem, hopefully not but really appreciate any help you guys can give.

  • Lost music and video after updating podcasts

For some reason all the music and videos on my iPod have disappeared, or I should say become inaccessible as it says I have none but the space they were taking up
is still in use, so they are somewhere on my iPod.
I was downloading a few new podcasts via a wi-fi connection and afterwards it "updated" my library and then the music and videos were gone (podcasts remained)
    Help!

    Have you reset your iPod?
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doe snot work I would next try resyncing.
