Lost music library - help

I had to clean up my registry due to a virus. I backed up my files but I need to reinstall ITunes. I don't know where my music library is or how I can retrieve it. Can I somehow get it back by copying the music from my Ipod device back into a newly installed ITunes?

Your iTunes library should still be in <User's Music>\iTunes where it was before you started. What happens if you start iTunes now? Does it appear with an empty library or ask questions about scanning for media as if it had just been installed? Did the clean up process involve creating a new profile?
If your library still exists on your computer it will be best to get that working again instead of attempting the more difficult task of extracting your media from your device.

  • Upgraded and lost music library except for purchased songs

I followed the upgrade prompt, and it wiped out my entire music library and playlists except for those songs I had purchased on I-tunes. The hundreds I downloaded from my own purchased CDs are gone. Help!

I had this happen to me a year ago when I upgraded from an older version. I was saddened when I lost all of my library. I then tried to install the older version that I still had in my recycle bin, and then by some miracle I got back my whole library. To this day I do not know what I did to restore it as I don't understand this process very well. But one thing I do know I will not upgrade. I still have iTunes 6.0 and will keep it. BUT I have another post out there because I can not burn a disk of one of my files. I keep getting the message "iTunes has to close now ...sorry for the inconvience etc." I need an answer to that question. Hopefully someone will be able to help me.

  • I think I just lost my whole music library, help!

Hello everyone! First off, i'm in my late 60's and have worked in maual labor my entire life. I'm really trying hard to increase my knowledge of technical devices. I own a classic iPod, 80GB, model #MB029LL and version 1.1.2 PC. I'm also running windows on my computer. (Gateway)  4+ years ago, I spent weeks adding over 2,000 songs to my iPod, from CD's. Shortly after, major and limiting health problems occurred and my iPod sat in a drawer for 3 years. During that time, my computer fried and the hard drive was toast. Health is much better now, and we have a new computer. So all my songs were on my iPod and i was able to connect it to iTunes. I was going to get help via apple support but they wanted $29. Being the stubborn man I am, I decided that i could figure out how to transfer all my songs from my iPod to my iTunes account. I back up my iPhone to a iTunes page so i thought this was the correct site. I tried to transfer the songs to iTunes and i ended up getting rid of all the songs. I'm completely dumbfounded and I'm ready to accept help. I really hope I haven't lost everything.
So my question is, is there a way to retrieve all 2000+ songs and put it back on my iPod and the iTunes account? I appreciate anyone's suggestions in this matter. I'm no spring chicken, but I desperately want to understand and keep learning.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Cracked Hard Drive, Lost Music Library.

This one is a bit of a doozy, and was previously left unanswered months ago. So far, it seems I've exhausted all that the Apple Support and Google searches can offer. My goal, as stated in the title, is to get a set of old music onto a old replacement hard drive and my iPod Touch.
The conflict that started it all was the hard drive that held my music cracked and failed to recover any data. Since then, I have had to replace the hard drive in my MacBook Pro with an older hard drive that currently is running OS X 10.6.8
To add insult to injury, my disc drive is incapable of reading my CDs, probably due to the damage the computer took in the same instance as the cracked hard drive.
The only remaining files I have for my music lay in my very outdated, very low-charge 30GB iPod Classic that I cannot use unplugged. What I thought I needed to do is mount my iPod Classic onto the desktop and replace the iTunes library with the one in my iPod as the official support recommends. However, whether it be the outdated iPod model or that I am running 10.6.8, I cannot see or find a disk mounted anywhere on the computer.
If anyone has any helpful pointers, it would be greatly appreciated to let them be known to me. Thanks in advance, and if any other spec details are needed, I can offer them at any time.

[Discussion: Zevoneer's post on replacing music downloaded from iTunes music Store|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8794716] - basically it is up to the individual to ensure their music is backed up against loss.
Actually your music is still around, it is on the old hard drive. Do you still have that?
Purely at Apple's discretion they may possibly allow a one time second download, but you have to contact them about that.

  • ITunes "lost" music library, playlists...

...Did an add folder to library and it appears that everything shows up in iTunes (can never be sure), but lost all playlists, album titles for audio books that were added after downloaded, and any information I manually added to music/audiobooks after they were downloaded... Why would iTunes drop an entire library. Nothing changed in terms of location of library (on ext HD), configuration of pc (winxp)
Big question - any way to reestablish playlists without having to manually recreate?

I have a similar issue. But my "my music" folder was moved from my docs to "c" - because my office server was backing up my library. I can always reload the music (by adding the folder to the library). The music all re-appears in I-Tunes, but all of my playlists are gone. This happens to me at least every two weeks, particularly if I am working away from the office.
Would love to be able to re-establish my playlists w/o manually re-creating as well (which I must have done at least 5 times already)...

  • Lost music library on computer, can't get songs back from shuffle

I had to erase my hard drive last night and I THOUGHT I was backing up some of my music files on my shuffle. However, when I plug it into the USB port, I get a message saying the ipod is synced with another library and I would I like to erase it and sync with the current (empty) library. If I click cancel, itunes and my desktop do not recognize that the ipod shuffle is there. Is there any way to retreive my music? Apparently the shuffle does not have the "manual update" function that other ipods do to get around this problem.
    Please help!!

You can also copy music from the shuffle via the command line using Terminal. Unfortunately, all the music files are invisible in the finder and only show up using command line.
Probably easier to use one of those apps, assuming they work with shuffle.

  • Lost my library help!

I dunno how in the bloody world it happend I didnt even do anything just one day I turned on itunes and my library was completely gone! I think I moved around my folders could moving my folders like the itunes one screw things up? when I did the system restore it put everything back but it never started wroking again so I'm freaking anyway thats all I can think of to have caused this disaster. My ipod still had all my stuff on it though. I tried a system restore and it still wouldnt bring back my library. I looked on other help sites to see if their was any way I could take the stuff off my ipod and put it back onto my computer/library but I can't because for some other weird reason windows wont see my ipod. Itunes see's it but when I go to windows explorer its not there, or rather it is there...for about 5 seconds before it disappears, which is why I cant use any of those softwares that transfer stuff off the ipod because they can't see my ipod eaither. I'm going nuts here please let their be someone among you who can shed a little light on this insanity!

A system restore in Windows will not touch your My Documents folder. As a general rule of thumb, do not touch the iTunes folder in My Music, rename it, or move it.

  • Lost music library

I have an external hard drive (E) and that is where I keep a copy of My Music and download all my cd's and purchases to. Within that folder there is an itunes folder with a copy of the library there. This library file is out of date, as I have added many cd,s since the last copy.
Stupidly, whilst trying to create space on my C drive, I deleted the contents of My Music on C!!!! This has obvioulsly delted the library file. I have copied the library file from E, but this is out of date. How do I get all the files and folders from my E drive into the library on C? Basically I have a copy of everthing I have purchased through itunes or copied from cd on my E drive, how do I get it onto C drive so I can see it in my itunes library?
    Thanks

    Within iTunes:
    - File=>Add Folder
    - Browse to the main music folder of the ExHD and select it
iTunes should add all the songs it does not currently have in its Library. However: You will have reset the Play Counts, Ratings and Last Played attributes of the newly added songs, but they will be back in your Library.
After recovering your Library, consider a complete backup process. Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy:

  • Refreshing music library DONT works

hi, i am using 5730xm i just brought it 4 days ago.
it works perfectly well when i transfer songs from my computer to the phone, however when i refresh the music library, the songs WILL NOT be updated. i used the search function on the phone and search for the songs, they are there but i dont know where is it located at. because i cant find it in the music library.
    helps are appreciated. thanks please.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

have you tried copying the songs directly to the root folder of the memory card on your phone via the Mass Storage connection mode. then try refreshing the music library. i haven't had any problems doing it that way at all.
If you found this or someone's comments helpful or like what that person has to say, please give some Kudos to their post!

So, can someone help me by telling me how I can gethte music currently in my iPhone back in to the Music Library in my new version of iTunes. Aslo hiow do I now get Album Artwork in to iTunes as well - iI recall that it was really easy when I set it up but this new version is causing me all sorts of heartache when I tried just now - hence my plea for help.
I hope you can help and that I can hear fromoyuvery soon
    Thanks guys
    Keith

    iDevices are not backup devices.
Use the backup of the computer to put the content back on the computer.
If not backup exists and the content was purchased via iTunes, connect the device and select File > Transfer purchases.  This will not restore playlists, playcounts or any other library specific data.
If the media was not purchased via iTunes, search google for ways to extract it from the iPhone.
Whatever you do, going forward make sure you back up your media and other important files regularly.
