Lost music on computer -want to transfer from iPod

My harddrive died and I lost my music on my computer. Can I transfer my music and photos back from my ipod touch onto my computer?
I just upgraded to Panther and noticed I no longer have iPhoto or iDVD on my computer.

Have you made any backups of your music and photos? If so, just restore from the backups.
Can I transfer my music and photos back from my ipod touch onto my computer?
Music, possibly - using a suitable third-party tool. But all your photos will only be relatively low-res versions formatted for the iPod.

You'll have to re-install them from the original source. These are part of iLife, not Mac OS X.

  • Transfer from iPod to New Computer

I use my iPod to listen to recordings of lectures. I do the recording using a digital recorder, then download to the PC and import into iTunes then sync to iPod.
Recently my PC crashed and the hard disk is no longer recognized. I will have to buy a new hard disk and reinstall everything to get that PC up and running. It will take a long time.
I tried to sync from iPod to another PC to continue using the iPod but it won't let me. I got a message saying that everything in my iPod will be deleted if I use it with another PC.
I can understand the copyright issue for purchased music but I don't have any -- everything in my iPod is recording of lectures.
I looked for Apple Support but all their Support web site does is refer me to this forum.
Can someone suggest a way to transfer from iPod to a new PC? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for all your help,
    Pius

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

I have just installed itunes on a new computer. On my ipod are hundreds of tracks but of course the newly installed itunes is currently empty. If I connect my ipod will it transfer from ipod to computer of will I lose all my tracks?

  • Computer was stolen--how to transfer from iPod to new computer

My computer was stolen and I want to transfer my iPod library to my new computer. I know how to transfer from one computer to another using an iPod but is there a way to do it when I don't have the computer that has my iTunes library?

There are a number of third party utilities you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod. This is just a selection.
    YamiPod
    PodUtil
    PodPlayer
    iPodAgent
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive posted in this thread: iPod to iTunes
If your iPod was set for automatic update change it to manual update. While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.
Another way is to connect your iPod and before it starts to sync, click the little X on the right hand side of the display beside the "Do Not Disconnect" message. The display is the little window to the right of the iTunes control buttons: iPod Interface
Or you could look at the method described in this link: How to keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod
Go with whichever method you feel most comfortable. If at any point you are asked if you want to link your iPod to a new library, click No.

Transfer the app into iTunes on your computer and then sync the app to the iPad. If you have never synced with iTunes before, it will be a little more complicated that that, but you can still do it if you follow the instructions in the user tip below.
If you are already syncing with iTune, it will be very simple and easy to do.

  • Transfer from ipod back to new computer

Old hard drive went bad.  Need to know how to transfer from ipod back to itunes so I don't loose all my music, audiobooks, etc.

The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  the exception is itunes purchases:  File>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just this occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.

  • My new laptop is Windows 7. I've just updated iTunes to 10.7.0.21 x64. ipod  with 3000  tracks no longer recognised. I want to copy from iPod to laptop. Is it possible?

My Toshiba laptop is Windows 7. I had to remove first attempt at loading iTunes 10.7.0.21 but second attempt seemed OK. My iPod with 3000+ tracks was reognised by my old laptop but is not recognised by iTunes on my Toshiba. I want to copy from iPod to iTunes to maintain the library. Is this possible?

  • Want to sync FROM ipod TO computer w/CD loaded music

This is a strange one. I have what I believe is a first or second generation ipod nano. The ipod and the computer were working wonderfully. We loaded lots of music via CD into the computer and synced w/ the ipod. Then I had to give the computer back to my mother-in-law, so before I gave it to her I wiped out the itunes library on the computer.
NOW, we have the computer back so we can load more music onto the ipod. I simply want to load the music from the ipod TO the itunes library on the computer -- but it won't let me. Is there any way to do this without having to wipe out all the music that is on the ipod and reload manually into the computer, then sync to the ipod??
PLEASE HELP!! The computer in question is a Dell laptop.
    Thanks.

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod or iPhone to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.
