Lost my Firewire External HD

I have an Firewire External HD attached to my Pismo G3 Powerbook, running on OS 10.4.5. I have lost the Exernal HD off the desktop when it is connected and powered up. The System Profiler knows it is there, but the desktop doesn't. Any suggestions about how to get it back without reformating the External HD?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.4 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
Good Luck!
Cheers!

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! I have had no trouble with any update Apple puts out (the Combo update is what I normally choose). Are you running 9.2 like your specs. say? You are in the Tiger forum, so I'll assume you haven't updated your Macs specs.

  • Unable to capture to firewire external

I'm new to final cut express ( just got it 2 days ago) and also I bought a G-drive mini 250GB firewire 800 external. I can capture to my internal, but when I have my firewire external connected, final cut express tells me it can't find any firewire camera, and when I try to capture, it tells me there is no device found. however, if I first connect my camera, my camera shows up in final cut express but my external won't mount. anyone have an idea what's going on. btw. my camera is a Canon Elura 80 minidv camcorder, and I have a 2.2 GHz macbook pro.

It's odd that I was able to capture to an external drive under Tiger, but have absolutely no joy doing so under Leopard (in either FCE or iMovie HD ... and, yes, I am using Canon cameras ... sigh). Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I seem to recall using Firewire Basic as the profile had been working for me.

  • Using a firewire external drive for Raid

    Hi
I posted a question related to this earlier but not specifially on this topic, hence this post.
I was watching Lynda.com video tutorial for servers and noted how easy it seemed to set up a raid solution. However since I am going to use a mac mini for a server I cannot have two harddiscs in it. However I can have a firewire external disc as well as usb 2.0 discs. I figure usb is way to slow, but the firewire should be fast enough..so my question is..can I just buy a firewire disc connect it..use diskutility and set up a raid? Or is there something special I need to concern myself with here i.e special type of external disc etc?
It would be supercool if I could do it this way. Might add, this is low traffic personal server and not a critical server at work..still would be nice with raid though. Then I would do time machine via the usb to an external disc.
Cudos to everyone on the list for all your help.

slightly better than a daisy chained raid array is a multiple bay external firewire enclosure that either offers hardware mirroring or can be mirrored in software. i've used these on client servers before, and they generally work fine.
please be sure to consider the pros and cons of running a mini as a server 24/7, as the 2.5" internal drives aren't generally made to do such things. i usually discourage using minis as servers unless budget or other circumstances prohibit something better.

  • My MacBook Pro hard drive is almost full and I wish to store my Aperture Library on an external drive, how do I do this and is the use of USB2 suitable or do I need to use a Firewire external hard drive?

My MacBook Pro hard drive is almost full and I wish to store my Aperture Library on an external drive, how do I do this and is the use of USB2 suitable or do I need to use a Firewire external hard drive?

You'll get better performance if you use a Firewire hard drive (especially if you buy a 7200 RPM drive). Firewire's IO speed is significantly faster than USB 2.  USB 2 has a theoretical max speed of 480 Mbps except that it has extremely high over-head.   The fastest speeds you can typically get are about 300 Mbps.   Firewire, on the other hand, has very little overhead.  The fastest speeds you can get are very nearly 800 Mbps.  You will typically be constrained by the maximum read/write speed of the drive, not the speed of the I/O on the Firewire bus.  Now if you had one of those nice shiny new Macs with the Thunderbolt I/O and a Thunderbolt drive (Light Peak) ... I think they alter space and time so that your data arrives before you know you want it.
Also... unless you want to buy a solid state drive (very expensive), try to keep your hard drives from becoming much more than about 60% full if you want great performance.  A nearly "full" hard drive is, on average, only about half as fast as the same hard drive when nearly empty.
USB 2 will work perfectly fine... just not as fast.
Also... it's much safer to move the entire Aperture library than to "relocate masters".  Your images must be managed.  You can Aperture manage them, or you can manage them.  But someone has to manage them.  If you "relocate" them so that they are no longer stored inside the Aperture library then you'll need to work out a system of how you decide to organize things and it's critically important that you don't start moving files around or deleting things without Aperture's knowledge.  If you do, you'll break the links to your masters and start having problems with missing masters.  If you have Aperture manage the library then you don't need to worry about any of that stuff.... it's safer.
Do make backups (use the Aperture Vault or use some other backup program, but make sure you back up your work if you care about it.)  There are only two kinds of hard drives in the world:  (1) those that have failed and (2) those that are going to fail.  There are no exceptions to this rule.  Hard drives are cheap.  Backup software is built into Aperture and into your Mac.

  • Firewire external writer not seen by Windows 7

I have Windows 7 x64 running very sweetly in my MacBook Pro 2.2 on a Kingston SSD 128 V series. I installed the X64 drivers from the SL disk as detailed elsewhere in this forum.
Everything is working except a Freecom LS Pro external DVD writer, when connected by firewire. Windows 7 simply doesn't see it. Not in Device Manager or anywhere. Fine connected USB.
The same LS Pro works fine with firewire in a Vista Bootcamp partition on my Mac Pro, and on the Mac partition on the MBP.
Firewire external hard drives work fine on the Windows 7 partition.
It looks like a missing driver for firewire DVD writer in Windows 7 bootcamp.
Will I have to wait for the imminent new Bootcamp release, or is there another solution?
    Anyone have the same problem?

I managed to work out why iTunes couldn't see the ext writer [I didn't check it in the drop down menu...]
So, although I didn't manage to get AIFF files written to the disc to work on my CD player... the situation is now resolved.

  • Time Machine backup with firewire external drive

I am having issues with a brand new firewire external drive and I am not sure if it is a drive issue, a configuration issue or what.
I have a 6tb Firewire hooked up to my machine. This is the drive which is being used as the destination for Time Machine. I have had this drive for awhile and seem to be having no problem with it and have not had an issue with Time Machine previously. I have a new added a second firewire drive (2tb) in daisy chain to the first (the 6tb). Whenever this drive is included in my TM backup profile, TM fails. Whenever I remove it, TM seems to work. I am wondering if the issue is the sequence of the drives (the TM drive perhaps needing to be the last in the chain), an issue with TM or perhaps an indication of a hardware problem with the new drive itself. Anyone got a clue?
    Thanks.

Okay, apparantly no one else seems to be having this issue. That being the case then, how do I find a log file to get an error code so I can try to determine *why* Time Machine is failing?

  • FireWire external drives and bootable DVD's

I have 2 Mac Pro running 10.5.2 with all recent updates:
    1) Mac Pro *****UXYL model MacPro3,1 (early 2008)
    2) Mac Pro *****00PX model MacPro1,1 ROM de démarrage : MP11.005D.B00
On the second I can mount and boot with a FireWire external drive. I can also use an utility DVD or CD like DiskWarrior.
On the first one, nothing of this is possible : I cannot mount a FireWire drive only an USB drive. I cannot use CD or DVD bootables except of course Install Disks (version 1.1)
I tried to obtain an answer from Apple support without any success.
    <post edited by host>

The ROM has been reported in the past to be one element of the issue, but in general Apple has made it abundently clear that you can't install an older operating system on a Mac nor boot from an older operating system than the Mac than came with it in these two articles:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
And as far as I know no one has been able to downgrade the ROM to an older version than it shipped with either to force boot an older operating system.

  • Can't find my 3 Firewire External HD's on my desktop

I have a 17 in imac with 10.4 and for some strange reason all three of my external Firewire Hard Drive no longer appear on my desktop? No matter what I do they aren't there. I turn them off etc... reboot etc... nothing. My USB external HD shows up but not my firewaire. What can I do to get them back on? @ of the three are Western Digital... and one is a Accomdata.

How to fix the problem of a missing external Hard Drive (Firewire) after it vanishes from you desktop after installing 10.4.10 update.
I have a iMac PPC (Non intel). Aparently my system upated installed the wrong version of 10.4.10 and thus my external firewire hard drives a 320 GB Westerndigital My Book, and Acomdata 80 GB, and aWestern Digital 160 GB media center all vanished from the desktop.
The instructions below should be credited to several different people. I found various version of these steps in the Discussion. I combines a few of them into this one 10 step fix and it worked for me. I hope it works for you.
    1) Shut down you computer
    2) Unplug all peripherals (i.e USB and Firewire, I left computer power plug in as well as ethernet and Keyboard+ Mouse) and leave along for 30 Minutes
    3) Restart holding down the Command (Apple) + Option + P + R keys for three startup bongs, then release the keys and your computer will start up as usual.
    4) Verify and repair disk Permission using Disk Utility. (Several things were repaired here)
    5) Instal 10.4.10 Combo PPC
    6) Restart Again
    7) Again repair Disk permissions (None of mine needed to be repaired fyi this time)
    8) Unplug Power cable and Firewire cable from External Hard Drive (leave along for 1 minute)
    9) Reconnect power to Firewire External Drive first then the Firewire cable to the drive second, then the firewire cable from the Drive to the computer last.
    10) Turn on your Firewire Drive... you will head it spin up and eventually show up on your desktop just like it did before the 10.4.10 update.

  • A 5.25 firewire external that works?

Anyone know of a 5.25 firewire external enclosure that works with intel macs? I had a few, macally style, and they only work usb-2....
    any help greatly appreciated.
    thanks

Have a look at this 5.25" enclosure (link). OWC are a well respected Mac supplier. The only downside is that it seems to have an ATA5 bus in it meaning hard drives are limited to 128GB but I guess as you want a 5.25" enclosure you rather have an optical drive in mind.
Alternatively look at the whole package (link).

  • Sharing a Firewire external drive over Ethernet

Sorry, this should be in the "Networking" forum, BUT IT DOESN'T SEEM TO EXIST. . .
Have 500GB Firewire external drive hooked to G5 for backup. Just want to have it mount our other Mac's desktop so they can also use it over the network for backup. I CANNOT find ANY WAY to do this glaringly obvious desired feature within OSX!!!
WHY isn't there a "Share this Drive on the Network" checkbox in "Get Info"? So you could easily share any USB or Firewire storage device instantly!

  • My Book Firewire External Causing iMac to not shutdown

I have several external devices connected to my iMac.
    1. My Book Firewire External HD
    2. My Book USB External HD
    3. USB Hub for mouse, keyboard, USB connection for M-Audio keyboard
    4. Presonus 1394 Firewire Audio Interface
My iMac does not want to shutdown all of a sudden and I have traced it down to trouble with the My Book Firewire External HD. For some reason, when I Shut Down the iMac, when it does shut down, the My Book remains running even with the iMac off. I have to unplug the My Book to turn it off. Any ideas on why the My Book is causing trouble with my iMac and why it will not dismount when I try to dismount it via Finder?

The software I was referring to is the Button Manager software which now that I look at it may not have anything to do with the auto power down nor have I even tried it. Just thought I would through out some ideas.

  • Editing using a firewire external hard drive and a NTSC television monitor

I have Final Cut Express 2 and use it with a firewire external hard drive and a NTSC television monitor.
I have started to use iMovie with this same set up. I save my iMovie projects to an external hard drive and also have my miniDV deck connected via firewire with the composite outputs going into a 27 inch television so that I can get a better idea of what my colors and title safe framing, etc. look like.
I have had some minor problems with this set up. Like stuttering video, audio tracks playing back when thay are "unchecked" and the "unexpectedly quit" deal.
    Thanks in advance!!!

iM uses a lot of harddrive space on the "start up"/internal disk, even when the project itself is located on some external drive.. make sure, you have at last 10 - 15GB free...

  • 10.4.5 Update Causing Error -36 with LaCie Firewire External Hard drives

I have two LaCie Firewire external drives, one for extra storage and one for backups. Since the 10.4.5 update, I've been unable to copy files consistently from my external drives to my hard drive or other external drives. The disks mount, and run like normal - I have my iTunes library on one drive, and all the tracks play normally. I am able to copy very small files, but anything over a couple mb gives me an error -36. I've run disk utilities etc on the external drives and they appear to be just fine. In order to see if it's an OS problem, I hooked the external drives (in a daisy chain) to my girlfriend's ibook. She's running Jaguar still, and had no problems. So it appears that it's an OS upgrade problem. One note, I didn't disconnect the drives when I ran the upgrade, but then, I never have for upgrades, only full OS installs. Is anyone else having this problem and know of any fixes?

    Libby,
Backup is unable to make a restorable by Disk Utility backup. You can restore pieces of the software as outlined in my FAQ about backing up user data:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
But to be able to restore a backup with Disk Utility, you need a cloning utility to have made the backup.
I suggest starting a new thread here, where someone else could help you out better:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=752&start=0
First off, you'll get a wider audience who may be able to solve your problem. Secondly, responses to you won't confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them. And thirdly, you'll know for certain whether or not a response applies to you.

  • Sleep and a firewire external drive?

I was wondering the correct way to put my eMac to sleep with a new external drive. Do I eject the external drive and then put the eMac to sleep or can I just leave the external drive going when I put the eMac to sleep? I don't want to screw up my new HD.
eMac 1.25 gHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   768 MB RAM, 30 GB internal drive, 160 GB firewire external drive

I think since you're hard drive is connected via Firewire, it's safe to keep it turned on and then in your "Energy Saver" System Preferences select "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible."
