My flash drive was showing this morning. I somehow dragged the alias out of the finder to watch it disappear into the "clouds." Is there any way to see it again, AND access it?

I've seen a couple of threads about this message, but none dealing with my simple issue:
I get this message: "The alias can't be opened because the original item can't be found" -- AFTER TRANSFERRING THE FILE IN QUESTION VIA FLASH DRIVE.
I thought, maybe the "original item" hadn't been completely copied from the drive, so I tried opening the file again this time with the drive still plugged into the laptop--but again, the message came up and I couldn't open it.
What's the deal?
The files I'm transferring:
a 1.2GB MKV file of a movie I downloaded, which I had no trouble viewing on my desktop
a 105MB application
(btw, the application is called "VLC", which is a file playing app that works on my desktop, and I want it on my laptop so that I can play movie files like .mkv, which is the other file I'm transferring...but that doesn't make any difference, I think. No, I can't just download the movie and the app right onto the laptop...I don't have wifi right now...='[...)

I had been dragging straight from the desktop into the USB window. Eventually, I opened up finder and went to Desktop there, and when I dragged the files from there into the USB window, it worked. Now it took a while to move the files into the USB, which was a sign that they were actually being moved.

Is my music lost? Did my flash drive not copy the songs properly?

Dragged all my music files to my flash drive before upgrading my operating system and doing a full wipe of everything, which I did today. The songs won't show up on the flashdrive now...or my upgraded computer. Are my music files lost?

Do you mean sorta like unzipping the folder? When I backed up my contacts, they were saved into an archived (or zip?) folder on my flashdrive, couldn't actually be opened on the flashdrive, and could only be opened to see individual contacts once I actually transferred the whole archived folder back to the new computer. IF so, is that why I I see an "iTunes" folder on my flash drive that I created but don't find any files in it when I actually click?

I played a video file that was saved on a flash drive on my iMac. After the video played, it was automatically deleted from the flash drive. I did not physically delete the file. When I closed the file, it simply vanished. Is there anyway to recover the file?

Thanks for your response. I didn't notice the file in the trash after this occurred. If it was there, it is long gone by now anyway since I've emptied the trash several times since the incident (unless someone has an answer for recovering files that have been deleted from trash?). If it happens again, I'll pay closer attention to what is in the trash and see if this works. Thanks again.

Download firefox, use the save option rather than install.
Save it directly to the flash drive, or to somewhere on your computer and copy/move it the flash drive.
However if IE is not working possibly you have some sort of setup problem so firefox may not work either.

HT1751 I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I use a Flash Drive to do so?

I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). I have IE 8 on Windows XP, and iTunes 10 something. In my Program files list I see iTunes and iTunes (2) and even iPod and iPod (2) where a tech had to back up and do this for me before. I'm just trying to fix it all. I keep getting the "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below." I can even run a search and find the folder, but it gives me the same error message. I was planning on using the Microsoft Fix-It tool to help uninstall then Reinstall iTunes. But I need to backup my library. So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I copy the folder to desktop or can I use a Flash Drive to backup my music? I don't want to do anything until I know for sure how I can backup my songs, and then reinstall them into iTunes. Thanks for any help.

Ok, thanks that helps. I don't have an external hard drive though. What about backing up through 'the cloud'? I'm just wondering since my husband syncs his iPod to the PC through iTunes and he's worried that he will lose all the songs on his iPod if the library is lost from iTunes and he tries to 'sync' it up again. I'm not exactly sure how to 'copy the entire iTunes folder' either. I kinda suck at this unless I have step by step instructions, which I haven't found yet on iTunes help or other sources.
The only way I know how to back anything up is by going back to a restore point, etc. (as stated before, we don't have an external hard drive.)

I just installed a new M500 Crucial ssd in my late 2008 mbp - everything was working fine on old hard drive (running snow leopard) but was getting slow and wanted to upgrade - i lost my snow leopard disk when moving from hawaii so i found an iso online - using a flash drive i partitioned the disk and made the bootable image on flash drive - formatted as extended/journaled - switched out the hard drives - plugged in the flash drive - started the comp - held option - install begins to boot - choose language - all is fine - choose english - next step window pops up saying 'cannot install os on this computer' - click on utility but all options are greyed out - disk util is greyed out - only options it gives is to start from backup or restart - real confused here - all help appreciated - thanks in advance and happy new year!

Snow Leopard comes in discs only. The USB drive may be a counterfeit and/or corrupt. There are two options for you:
Get replacement original OSX installation disks from Apple customer service. Have your MBP serial number ready and there is a charge.
Or two, purchase a Snow Leopard disk from the Apple online store:

The system I'm have is a Mac-mini that had SL on it and no SuperDrive. I have also call Apple Support and they have really have not been to much help over 1st did my up grade to Lion and Installed the Lion Server.... it lost my SSL that I paid for and kill almost on of my server setting, plus kill all my web servers (using apache vhosts), and not to say the LDAP will even let remote users login to your laptops.
PS: There is no way that I'm going to buy a Install USB from Apple... They have over billed me over $300.00 because the Apps Store still has bugs (Glad I did not write that App/Service)
If there is anyone that can give in the information to create a USB install stick, I would be very thinkful.

If you ever had problems with your Mac OS X installation you know that the first thing you should do is to check the startup volume using Disk Utility.
After the check has ended and, if the errors exceed a certain level of seriousness, the Disk Utility application will require you to restart your Mac and use its Mac OS X Install disc counterpart.
Other users may have to reinstall OS X altogether, but will find, or already know, that their SuperDrive (a CD/DVD reader and write combo drive) is not functioning properly and it will not be able to read the Install disc.
Although this might happen to Mac OS X Leopard users due to faultyhardware, the vast majority of problematic SuperDrives will be encountered inside Snow Leopard running Macs.
This is due to the updated SuperDrive firmware included in either the Install disc or the software updates one has to install to reach the latest version of OS X, namely 10.6.6.
This can be fixed by flashing the SuperDrive’s stock firmware using free command line tools that one can find for free online (I will write about this process also, but at a later time because this article only focuses on allowing you to create your own alternative USB boot disc).
If you are reading this last bit of information with skepticism, than you should know that it happened to me too. Despite all my tries to make it work properly, the SuperDrive kept on munching any inserted DVDs and just popped them out in about twenty seconds.
The workaround to this issue was to create my own Leopard bootable USB memory stick. I am not suggesting a Snow Leopard bootable stick mainly because there are lots of users that have decided to buy the cheaper, Upgrade version, which I have not tested and, therefore, I’m not sure if it will work properly once written to a USB disk.
And now, here are the exact steps you should follow in order to obtain a fully bootable Leopard (or Lion) Install disc.
Step 1 (If you already have the Leopard install disc DMG file you can skip to Step 2)
Launch Disk Utility (you can find it inside /Applications/Utilities). Here select the Leopard Install disc in the list of drives on the left and click on the New Image menu entry at the top of the window. A save message will appear where you will have to select the Desktop as a destination.
Step 2
After Disk Utility has finished creating the Leopard DMG, insert your USB stick and erase all data and reformat the disk. To do this select the USB in the list of drives on the left and, after clicking on the Erase tab on the right side of the window, choose the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format and click the Erase button beneath.
Step 3
After the USB has been reformatted, download the SuperDuper app from HERE and launch it. Once SuperDuper starts, you will only have to select the DMG in the Copy drop-down menu, your USB memory stick on the right and hit the “Copy Now” button.
One can also use Disk Utility for this task but creating a bootable USB stick failed 2 out 4 times when copying the DMG to the stick (with the exact same settings each time). Creating the bootable stick using SuperDuper proved to be the perfect way to do it because it worked each of the 4 times I tested it.
The steps above can also be used to create a bootable Mac OS X Lion USB by using the InstallESD.dmg image you can find inside the Lion installer (named “Install Mac OS X Lion.app”) downloaded from the Mac App Store in the /Applications folder.
To locate the InstallESD.dmg right click the Lion installer, select the “Show Package Contents” entry, go inside the “Contents” folder, and from there into the “SharedSupport” folder. Inside this folder you can find the InstallESD.dmg you can use to create your own bootable Mac OS X Lion USB stick. To do so, go to the third step described above and use the InstallESD.dmg as the DMG to be copied to your USB disc.
That’s it! Once the process ends you will have a fully bootable Leopard (or Lion) USB disk that you can use as an alternative to the Apple’s DVD Install disc that comes bundled with all Macs.
To use your newly created bootable disk you will have to restart the Mac, press and hold the OPTION key until the StartupManager appears. Here, select the Mac OS X Install disk using your keyboard arrows and press return to start from the selected drive.

Recover data from a dead flash drive

I am trying to recover some data off of an unresponsive flash drive. When plugged into any computer, the light on the flash drive does not turn on at all. The computer also does not recognize that the flash drive is connected. Anyone know any tricks? This is some report card information for a couple teachers and they are desperate...

There’s nothing you can do yourself. Your only hope is to ship the drive to a data recovery specialist. Be prepared to pay big bucks so you have to decide whether the lost data is worth the high price. If the computers won’t recognize that it is plugged in then it is fried.

Flash drive no longer works after being connected to a Windows XP machine.

After being opened on a Windows XP machine, the contents of my flash drive now shows up on my Macbook pro as a single .lnk file. What happened? It's MS-DOS (FAT32).
Is there any way out of this or has all my data been lost? I've never experienced this issue previously.

Thanks. I've now scanned it with both Sophos and ClamXav and both have come up negative for infection.
At least while the scan was running I could see that all my data is still there as the name of each file appeared as it was going through the scan.
My efforts to sort this out seem to have made things worse as now it opens up word whenever I try to see the contents. I'll try it on a PC tomorrow and see if I can figure out what happened. Looks like the file system has been damaged in some way.

Flash Drive Unreadable - HELP PLEASE!!

"The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Story of my life.
I have a 32gb Micro Center brand flash drive. It's completely full of pictures, videos, documents, and files. Every time I stick it into my Macbook Pro, it tells me its unreadable. It gives me three options: Initialize, Ignore, Eject. I don't want to mess around with anything until I know what's wrong and what I should do. I've tried putting my flash drive into PCs, but it's still unreadable. I always remove my devices safely so I'm not sure what the problem is. The flash drive is in excellent condition. Maybe if anyone knows how to talk me through the Initialize option, that'd be helpful, cause frankly, I don't know much about softwares and such.
I've heard of people sending out there flash drives and getting them fixed. Is this an options? I'd only do it if it was guaranteed to work without losing any files. Is there anyway I can troubleshoot it at home and fix this?
I will be checking this post often to reply to any questions or answers. It's urgent that I access my flash drive!

Initializing it will format it and you will definitely lose everything if it isn't lost already.
Not being readable on either a PC or Mac is a bad sign.
It may be worth taking it into MicroCenter and see if they have any ideas. Most recovery services are rather expensive and Google is your friend in finding such a service.

AHT Apple Hardware Test Download & Flash Drive

Hi guys,
I really need to test the hardware on a 13" MBP. Full spec below.
The machine has Yosemite installed & I don't have the original install disc.
Does anyone know where to download the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) files & how to go about using it with a flash drive and a restart?
I've read this can be done but have only found dead links on old websites.
Holding down 'D' or 'Alt+D' isn't working, which I believe is due to the new operating system not having AHT.

You will need to find it as the AHT is on the *machine specific* System Install DVD 1. If you lost your System DVDs, you can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

[SOLVED] Clone Archlinux to USB flash drive

Hello,
I want to clone an existing Archlinux installation (x86-64) from a hard drive to a 32 GB USB flash drive. I want to be able to boot from the USB stick on my Win7 labtop.
I already took some measures to prepare my hard drive (with gparted). After moving all movies, pics etc to external stores and shrinking the home drive (sda4), it now looks like this:
- sda1 Boot (small)
- sda2 Swap (small)
- sda3 Root ( ca.8GB)
- sda4 Home (ca. 22GB)
I tried to take an image of the entire hard-disk (ca. 250GB) with clonezilla and restore it to the USB flash drive, but got an error message - original disk to big (250GB vs 32GB), besides only ca 30GB of the 250GB being assigned to partitions.
Now I'm looking for a way to bring only the necessary partitions from the harddisk to the USB stick, hoping to have exactly the same Archlinux configuration as a bootable installation on the USB stick afterwards (bootable on a Win7 labtop ... and maybe from my main Archlinux machine too). There is a wiki article about the topic, but its rather about installing a fresh system than cloning an existing system. The related questions on the forum (searching in 'installation' for 'clone usb') did not answer my question.
Maybe somebody did successfully what I'm planning to do and can give me some tips?

The filesystems don't have to be the same as the original partitions. I prefer ext4 (universally supported) or jfs (uses very little CPU), but I recommend you ext4.
In fact, you can use a hard drive instead of a flash drive and this is how you clone a Linux installation manually!

Yes. I mount the source partition in /mnt/source and the destination partition in /mnt/dest, and then I issue
rsync -av /mnt/source/ /mnt/dest
and wait for it to finish. Then I unmount the partitions and mount the other ones and repeat the same thing.

Since the root directory you'll aready copy on the flash disk won't have the /boot directory, simple do a
mkdir /mnt/dest/boot
while your destination partition is still mounted. Unmount the source root partition, mount the boot one and then type:
rsync -av /mnt/source/ /mnt/dest/boot
and GRUB and the kernel will be copied to the /boot folder on the destinaton partition on the flash disk.
Make sure that in /mnt/dest/etc/fstab you comment out the line for mounting the /boot partition, if any.

Use Gparted, right click any partition and click Information. In the window that appears, in the middle you can double-click the UUID and press Ctrl-C to copy it. Then you can paste it in the text editor and use it for /etc/fstab or /boot/grub/menu.lst. That's why I love Gparted for such stuff.

Yes, since Arch uses GRUB 1 on the installation CD you can uste the command I gave you to reinstall GRUB on the flash disk with the settings you already entered for the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.
Make sure you boot the CD in 64 bit mode if the Arch you installed is 64 bit. Just to be safe.

USB ports stop recognizing external or flash drives during back up, dv7 2185 laptop

After one of the updates over the last 7 months my computer lost the ability to complete a systems back up. The back up will complete about 25 percent (using external hard drive or flash drive, any of the 3 USB ports) and then stop. The My computer page will then not show free space info. for the drives like when it did when they were first plugged in. It's like the drive became unrecognized during the back up.

I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SAME MODEL. I GOT THE SERVICE
MANUAL AND I'M THINKING TO OPEN IT AND SEE IF THERE'S SOME PHYSICAL BAD CONNECTION
