Lost my i-tunes

Hi I'm new to this and am sure that you have been asked before but I would appreciate anyhelp.  I'll give you the whole story.  I set up my i-tunes a few years ago on my big old computer - it is all cd's that I copied.  I set up a sharing thing with my lap top but by big old computer has now totally died and I can't find my library on my laptop.  I also can't copy the music from my ipod touch back into my library.  Is there anything that I can do without it costing me money?  Thank you in advance for any help that you can offer.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just this reason.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.

Awesome. I had a feeling it could still be there. I'm very happy for you!
Two things you can do now:
1.) Add all of these files into iTunes by using "Add to Library" and selecting the iTunes Media folder. This is the easiest method, but you lose your original iTunes settings, playlists, play counts, ratings, etc.
2.) A slightly more advanced method however will let you salvage your iTunes library and restore it the way it was before. Use finder to look at Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries. In that folder, check to see if there is one dated near today's date (or when the reset happened to you). If there is a very recent one, you can restore to that date. What you'll want to do is take that file, and MOVE it back up one level to the iTunes folder.
Currently in your iTunes folder is a file named iTunes Library (this is the active, and blank one) and now you should have the dated one as well. You can DELETE the iTunes Library one, and rename the dated one "iTunes Library".
Then hold OPTION while loading iTunes, and when asked to choose a library, select Choose Library, and navigate to Music/iTunes, and pick the "iTunes Library" file you just moved and renamed.
If all goes well, your songs, playlists, ratings, and etc. should all be back to the way it was. Just do "Add to Library" and select the iTunes Media folder to make sure nothing was excluded between the backup and your copy before it reset.
    Hope this helps!

I lost my I Tunes and my music. What can I do?

Reinstall iTunes, and then open the iTunes Store. Click on purchases in the top right-hand corner, and you should be able to download all of your music again from there.

  • My computer crashed and I lost all my tunes. I have them on my ipod but need to know how to get them back onto itunes

my computer crashed and I lost all but 2 albums in itunes. Is there a way to get into my old libruary? I have my tunes on my ipod.

Any music purchased through the iTunes store can be downloaded again for free as long as you are signed in with the Apple ID you used for the original purchase.  Any other music you had in iTunes should be easily accessible in your system back up or from the CDs you ripped from originally.

  • Spilled water over laptop :-( lost all i-tunes music!!

    Hi there!
Yes I know I'm really, really silly but last week I kicked a glass of water all over my laptop rendering it completely useless. I ost everything as nothing could be retrieved from the hard drive....Baically all my purchased music from i-tunes disappeared. I've bought a new laptop now and I've just downloaded i-tunes...is there any way I can get my music back? When I sign in to my acount it knows I've purchased certain tunes but obviously they're not there...help!!
    Many Thanks xxx

Carob, welcome to discussions! Not to "browbeat" you as I'm sure you're stressed enough as it is with the lost laptop, etc., but this is EXACTLY why it is CRUCIAL that you backup important files, especially purchased music. Store policy states that purchases are a one time deal & it's the user's responsibility to backup important files. That being said, the store has been know to allow for a ONE TIME re-download, although they are under NO obligation to do so. Choose the appropriate link from the following link below to e-mail the store about your situation. If you are lucky enough to get a re-download, PLEASE BACKUP YOUR FILES!

  • Lost playlists and tunes

My songs and playlists are all gone. I added to library all the songs back. Seemed to work fine. But my playlists are still gone. Any idea where they went?

You might have had a damaged 'iTunes Library' file.
Look in ./Users/Username/Music/iTunes to see if such a file exists.
Unfortunately these damaged files cannot be repaired.
iTunes tries to restore as much information as possible, but some information is lost.
Your missing 2000 tunes probably still are on your HD.
To add these again to the library, drop the 'iTunes Music' folder (in ./Users/Username/Music/iTunes) on the library window in iTunes.
iTunes will now add the missing songs to the library again.
If all goes well, your library will now list the 6200 songs.
Concerning your iPod. I think it's best to start from scratch.
If your iPod is set to automatically update, connect your iPod and immediately press and hold the Command and Option keys. Hold these keys down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Holding these keys prevents the iPod from auto updating.
Then restore your iPod and set it up the way you want.
Your 'Purchased' playlist will re-appear on your next purchase.
In the meantime you can create a Smart Playlist with the rule:
    Kind - contains - protected
This playlist will then list all your purchases.
After the Purchased playlist re-appears, it will only list new purchases. If you want it to contain all purchases, drag the songs from the Smart Playlist to the 'Purchased' playlist.
Or just forget the 'Purchased' playlist and use the 'Smart Playlist' to view your purchases.
    Hope this helps.

Stuff on your hard drive needs to be ADDed to your library if not already there... otherwise why not just manually click "sync" in the File menu?

    Greetings Nefertiti72,
It seems you are experiencing an issue with contact syncing and management. It seems you've removed an email account which contained a number of contacts that are not associated with your iCloud account. I have linked to a knowledge base article which provides more information about iCloud contacts syncing:
Get help using iCloud Contacts - Apple Support
Learn what to do if you’re having issues using iCloud Contacts. For example, you might make changes to Contacts that don't update across all of your devices.
You may want to consider importing the contacts from the email account you removed. You can do it easily by following the steps in this article:
    iCloud: Import a vCard
You can import an electronic business card, also called a vCard, into iCloud Contacts. If the vCard contains contact information for more than one person, each contact becomes a separate entry.
In iCloud Contacts, choose Import vCard from the Action pop-up menu , which appears at the bottom of the All Contacts list or a list of group contacts
    Select a vCard to import.
The contacts from the vCard are added to the All Contacts group in Contacts. You can add the contacts to any other group by dragging them to the desired group.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • I lost my i-tunes library on my vista pc  while trying to install  an update. How do i get it back

I have a pc running Vista.  I got an update notice, but it would not upgrade. I tried to upgrade from download folder as suggested but somehow my entire i-tunes library is now gone. I have an external hard drive on this computer.  Can I transfer my i tunes back to my pc, and if so, how do I do this?
I have a new Mac with my i-tunes library on it, but it does not have a CD drive so I cannot add music from CD's with it.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thank-you.

Ok, thanks so much for helping, but now I'm back at the screen where I can choose the partion to reinstall Lion and I have one partion named "UNTITLED" 320.07 GB total 319.65 available
And it says that this disk doesn't use the GUID partition table scheme and still does not allow me to choose the partion to start the recovery of Lion.. What do I do now so it lets me start? Please help... Thanks..

  • System Restore, lost music, I tunes won't open

Loaded new Itunes version, now I opened Itunes and no music, Did a system restore, and backed up music file before restore. Music is still on computer, but when I open I tunes it won't open, says can't recognize the .itl file because it is from a newer version, and I tunes won't open. Can I just re download Itunes to fix? Or will this overwrite my music file?

Do you get an error message when you try to open iTunes? If so, what does it say? (Precise text, please.)

  • Recently installed lion and lost my I tunes library

    Hi
I have an I Mac I bought last Christmas, just got an I pad 2 and have an I phone 3GS .I was trying to get them all synced up using lion and I cloud,it seemed like it was all going well...I could view my whole music library at home on my I pad,and it played.later that day every time I tried to play a song on my I Mac I got an exclamation mark for some (many but random) songs and after thre hours on the phone with applecare and a "genius" helping me create a new folder ....I tunes 1 and transferring my 70 G of music into it with the intention of deleting my original file afterwards. I went out to dinner as it was taking a while ,when I got home 20G transferred ,and the rest is gone.....????i mean really gone form time machine,my hard drive and my external hard drive....
Any ideas so it doesn't happen again?

Are you sure its gone? What about in your Time Machine rollbacks? Search Time machine by accessing it through the Finder rather than the TM 'star wars' interface.
Alternatively, get a free copy of EasyFind and look for this folder
    'iTunes Media'
Select 'All Volumes' in the drop-down menu.
From the results, look for one that has a creation date prior to when your tried to sync. Double-click on it in EasyFind and see if it contains your missing content.

  • I have lost all the tunes I had on my Ipad with the exception of those recently purchased. How do I get them back

All the tunes I had on my Ipod have been deleted. Any suggestions as to how I can retrieve them.

Windows Media Player is like iTunes is just a Media Player to play media files on your computer.  You just have to know where the media files are in your PC.  Drag that folder with media files into iTunes so ITunes library will have all these media transferred.  You can then sync them over to your device.
Your device will only sync with iTunes and not Windows Media Player.

  • Upgraded to 6, and have lost all my tunes, library is empty!

I upgraded to 6, and now when I open itunes, all of my songs, purchased and those I burned from CDs are gone. I repaired the permissions, removed the preferences file, and would copy the library file, but it is empty, so what is the point of that?
Where are my songs? What can I do to recover them? I first got a 'disk locked' message', but Itunes does at least open now, just all the music is gone? Please help!
    Thanks,

  • I have lost most of my i tunes library.  Many of the lost songs are are my ipod.  What happens if I load plug my ipod into the computer?  Will I erase whats on the ipod because there'll be no match found on my itunes library.  Or..will I be allowed to mov

I have lost my i tunes library.  Many of my lost songs are on my two nano i pods.
Since I have lost my i tunes library I have re-installed most songs.  However I have a large number of songs on my i pods which I would like to retrieve.  If I try to load my i pods to my computer will I lose the songs which I could not get re-installed to my library but are on the i pods.  Since I lost my library I have not re-introduced my i pods for updating since they too will likely have to be re-installed.  Will I lose the songs already in the i pods if have to re-introduce them to my computer.  A solution to this problem would be for me to transfer my lost library songs from the i pod to my library.  Can this be done?
    1)  Is it possible to retrieve songs from a lost i tunes library?  Withoutout re-loading the entire library (since I have done this manually).
    2)  What happens if I re-introduce my i pods to the computer?  Will this cause me to lose the present i pod installed music?
    3)  Can I transfer my lost songs and albums from my i pods to the i tunes library?

As you will have discovered, the music sync is only one way, from iTunes to the iPod, minus iTunes purchases.  On top of that, an iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.
