Lost my ipod touch how to report it

I lost my ipod touch 5th generation(32GB) at a club yesterday, its registered in my icloud and I have put it in lost mode but it really doesn't help me, problems are its dead, well it died the very last time I had it on me, it needs a passcode to access it and since its an ipod it needs wifi to connect to any internet in order to track it from icloud... now if someone found it and tries to sell it or pawn it how can I report it stolen, I still have the box with the serial number, would I have to tell the police the serial number?

What you needed to have already done was to have went to Settings>iCloud and turned FindMyiPod on.

For location the iPod uses the location of nearby wifi routers that are in Apple's database. Thus, wifi has to be on.
But how would that be possible unless the person who found it knows my passcode?
Wifi just has to be on and connected to report its postition to you by going to icloud.com as explained in a previous reply.
I'm guessing that if the person wipes and restores the device, I will have no way of finding it... unless it works off the serial number?
If the iPod is restored, you can no longer find it via icloud.com. I uses turning FIndMyiPod on, not the SN,.

iPod touch doesn't have a cellular connection like iPhone. Unless it picks up a network, and it has Find my iPhone enabled, unfortunately you will need to buy a new iPod.

By looking for it. If you have activated FaceTime or some other app that will make a sound when you activate the app (Call with FaceTime or Skype) that will help. Otherwise ther is nothing special you can do. Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report it to the police in case someone turns it in.
