Lost my Mac partition trying to remove Bootcamp
Hello all,
I am on a Macbook Pro 7,1 running Yosemite.
I have two drives installed:
1. The first one (SSD 256Go) has Yosemite installed.
2. The second (HDD 1To) had two partitions:
- the first one was a Bootcamp partition (Win 8) of approximately 120Go (called Bootcamp)
- the second one was a Mac partition containing all my documents, photos, music (called Media)
I tried to remove the bootcamp partition using the bootcamp tool and a windows 7 DVD, as instructed.
The processes was interrupted for no particular reason.
When I open disk utility, the Media partition is gone.
The HDD now has only one partition, the bootcamp partition, which takes up the entirety of the drive's space.
I tried repairing the disk from the utility, to no avail.
To add to my misery, my Time Machine backup failed a while ago, and was in the process of being reconstructed; so I don't have any backup.
Would anyone have ideas or experience in restoring partitions?
You cannot recover a deleted partition. It's possible you can use recovery software to restore your data:
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive. Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk. Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
None of the above is guaranteed to work.
Next time you need to put a small OS X partition on the HDD then use Boot Camp Assistant to create your Windows volume. There should be no other partitions on that drive. Your OS X volume should be on the first partition.

Boot Camp Vista-Partition lost in Mac-Partition
Hi everyone,
yesterday i reinstalled my leopard due to some issues. After this act i recovert my data using my Time Machine backup device.
Everything went well so far except one little nasty thing: the icon of my Vista-Partition (created with Boot Camp) was lost. And thats my problem. I can't see my Vista-Partition when i'm in Leopard. Even the Finder doesn't show me the partition.
The funny thing is, that i can boot into Vista without any problems using the Bootloader. When i'm using Vista, i still have access to the mac-partition. Nothing changed here after the reinstallation.
Would be nice, if anyone could help me bringing back the Vista-Access into my Leopard.I figured graphics drivers would be an obstacle...just talked to a friend and got some advice:
1. When display stays black after installation of Windows 7 64 bit (signal is on Mini-Display port)
restart from Windows 7 DVD - open command prompt (shift+F10) and delete all ATI Drivers.
2. Restart Windows 7 with default graphics drivers. Download ATI Desktop drivers, modify using ATI MobilityModder, install modified drivers.
It works.

Increase Mac partition after shrink Windows bootcamp partition
I have a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Mac OS X 10.9.4 with a 500GB HD.
The HD is partitioned with 370 GB to Mac and 128 GB to Windows and I decided to shrink the Windows partition to 65 GB because I needed more space on Mac, and I barely use Windows.
I resized the Windows Partition using Mini Tool Partition Wizard and moved it to the end of the disk, leaving the empty right after Mac partition.
I'm able to boot Windows partition and use it normally. The Windows C: disk now has 65 GB.
When I boot on Mac OS X and try to use disk utility to increase the Mac partition, it says that the Windows partition still has 128 GB.
It is possible to use the empty space I created?
Here's some information about my partitions:

Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.

i recently tried to remove widows7 on my macbook air using bootcamp and halfway through it grayed out .The windows 7 is removed but i cant free up the 62gig partition the windows was occupying on my 121gig ssd harddrive please help
You may have to see about using the Recovery HD partition to attempt to erase and restore useful function of the capacity lost to the former Windows installation.
And you may have to backup your contents outside the computer to do it. Disk Utility on the Mac OS X historically has not been able to touch a BootCamp created partition; so if BootCamp cannot remove it, then you have to see how to do the equivalent of a reformat of the entire drive (less Recovery partition?) then reinstall your OS X. Maybe from internet recovery, then get your applications, etc from the Mac App store, etc.
A complete system clone of your OS X on an external HDD would be another method to restore after reformat, of the portion you want whole again, not necessarily the space where Recovery may live.
There may be (an)other way(s).
Perhaps someone with recent experience
in this matter can reply & discuss options.
With my antiques, they almost know what I want before I tell them.
Hopefully yours will after you talk to it awhile.
Good luck & happy computing! -
Hi,
I use the bootcamp to install win7 on my 13" macbook pro .. after the installation I got throw windows and try to change the windows partition size
things gone wrong and I got my mac partition lost ! and while trying to got it throw the recovery Disk utility show that it turns to fat partition !
so I couldn't do any thing with it ! couldn't reinstall the lion again .. the only way is to reformat it !! and this will make me lost all my things in it !
So I just need any solution or software to boot from it and converting or editing the partition file system to be journal not fat

Regaining lost space after error when removing Bootcamp partition?
I am running snow leopard 10.8.2 and had a bootcamp partition of 115gb for Windows 7. Recently I tried to remove the partition using the bootcamp assistant and it displayed an error message that it was unable to remove the partition, however the icon for the partition disappeared in finder and the startup disk menu. I tried to remove the partition again in the same way and this time the error message did not come up, but the utility froze while it was removing the partition and after waiting for an hour or so I had to force quit the utility and restart my Mac. The bootcamp partition doesn't show up, but I did not get the 115gb back? Any ideas how I can reclaim it? Any help is much appreciated!
-EthanNotice the 76GB Free Space in the diskutil cs list output.
Unless Kappy has alternative suggestion, I suggest the following (the last 'b' is bytes).
diskutil cs resizeVolume <UseTheLongStringUUIDAboveTheMacintoshHDLine = DB68...> <UseTheSizeInBytesUnderTheLogicalVolumeGroupEntry = 250140434432b>
diskutil cs resizeVolume
Usage: diskutil coreStorage resizeVolume
lvUUID|MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode size
Resize a logical volume, which is one of one or more disks that consume storage
out of a logical volume group. The logical volume group will have more or less
available space after this operation, if it was a shrink or grow, respectively.
Example: diskutil coreStorage resizeVolume

Mac OS no longer available after trying to remove Windows on Bootcamp. How can I restore Mac OS without the Mac HDD in options?
So what I did was, I had bought my iMac from a shop and asked them to do bootcamp for me. However, they installed 32 bit instead of 64. My fault, I did not make my self clear about it. So after it has been delivered to my house, I realized that I wanted the 64 bit. I tried to remove windows on bootcamp but honestly, I have not experienced this before. So I failed. I believe, I did something wrong.
So I opened the iMac and it keeps asking me to go to windows. Windows OS also corrupted.
I tried the Option Key but the only option is Windows 7 only. So using a different keyboard, I press option and it only shows Windows HDD and the Mac HDD has gone.
What am I going to do? How can I restore Mac OS without the HDD anymore?iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2) < your profile
Try using Lion Recovery -
Hello Everyone,
I have a MacBook older model with me.I am running 10.7.6 on that, I was trying to use BootCamp to install windows on my mac. Since BootCamp can only work on a single Volume, I partitioned my Hard Disk to one volume.
Using BootCamp I installed windows and everything worked fine. After installing windows and testing everything, I switched back to OS X and this time I tried to make another partition on my single portioned Mac volume and named it Backup. That too worked. Now I have three Volumes
1)Development2)Backup3)BootCamp.
Next when I switched to Windows, It should the classic error, No Bootable device found, please insert a Bootable CD and press any key. When I tried to enter my Mac OS X install DVD and by pressing option key, it does not show me the proper Mac OS X development volume. It keeps going back to the No bootable device found message.
Any help will be much appreciated
Regards
Mithunyou can't add a partition in between - you put Windows to a new partition number.
GPT (GUID)
EFI
Mac HFS
Lion Recovery
Windows
And now you have two HFS
One partition and one Windows (plus Lion Recovery).
If you were to have more, it can't be before Windows for one thing. -
Lost Space(available) After Removing Bootcamp Partition
While i tried to remove my windows partition it came up with an error.. Now i have a HDD thats divided.. I hope u guys can help!
The simplest option is using a Time Machine. Since you have FV2, you may want to temporarily turn it off for this exercise - OS X Yosemite: Turn off FileVault encryption.
1. Backup using TM - Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
2. Run Internet Recovery and erase your internal drive - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
3. Restore - OS X Yosemite: Recover your entire system
If you do not have an external disk large enough for your backup or TM set up, then using Terminal commands is the more complicated option. -
Cannot remove bootcamp partition
Unable to remove Bootcamp partition using Bootcamp Assistant, which reports 'unable to partition drive' Drive is SSD
Using the BootCamp Assistant is recommended because usually the correct way to remove your Windows partition is to use the BootCamp Assistant again which should give you the option to remove the made Windows partition and revert back to one OSX volume.
After that's done a reboot of your Mac might be advisable.
Only if that's not working (whatever the reason) :
1) boot your Mac from your OSX install DVD
2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
After that's done successfully
8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
9) Quit Disk Utility
10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
Since you are 'fumbling' with your OSX partition you should consider having/making a backup of it before trying the a.m. procedure. Just in case.

Bootcamp formated my 2nd mac partition
Hi All
I tried to use bootcamp to install win7 on my macbookpro. When I run the bootcamp and go to the partition adjust or delete step, bootcamp tried to merge my 2 mac partitions. I clicked continue. At last it failed and formated my 2nd mac partition. That partition is grey in disk utility. I can not see it in finder. I do not have timemachine backup for that partition.I lost all the data on that partition. Is it possible to get them back?
ChaoIt appears you did not read or follow the Boot Camp instructions http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/.
Boot Camp will not work, as you found out, if your hard drive has multiple partitions. You will have to erase and format your hard drive to a single OSx partition. Make sure you save all your data before doing so.
You should also visit the Boot Camp forum where the Boot Camp gurus hang out https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp -
Clone a Mac Partition to an External Drive from within Windows 7 Bootcamp?
Anyone know if it is possible to clone the mac os x partition to an external drive from within Windows 7 bootcamp? I (like a few others) had a problem with the latest 10.6.3 update and I cannot boot into the mac partition but I can access it via bootcamp so I was thinking about trying to clone it to an external drive and then boot from the new clone and see if that works.
Appreciate your comments.setup a 30GB partition on an external drive, along with a partition of 150% the size of your Mac OS X volume -- or larger.
Install OS X to 30GB.
While booted from DVD, before you install, you'll need to go to Utility Menu => Disk Utility to do the partitoning. While there, in DU see if you can repair your system.
And where is your TimeMachine or clone backup? The "Step #1: Backup before beginning your Boot Camp project."?
No way to backup or clone from within Windows, though you may be able to write to NTFS backup volume, UNLESS you bought MacDrive8 which allows read AND write to HFS+ from within Windows. -
Hello all!
I got a new hard drive for my Mac Book Pro and an enclosure so I could clone the old partitions on to the new drive.
So I...
Put the new hard drive in the enclosure.
Booted up off an install disk and ran disk utility.
Copied the Mac and Bootcamp partitions over to the new drive that was connected VIA USB.
Turned off the computer, took the old hard drive out and put it in the enclosure.
Put the new hard drive in the Mac Book Pro.
Booted into Mac OSX with no problem.
When I rebooted held down the option key to boot into the windows side, it didn't show up as an option.
When I went back into the Mac side, I loaded Disk Utility and saw that I had the Mac partition, the BOOTCAMP partition, and a bunch of unallocated space. When I went into the System Preferences and set the target boot drive to the BOOTCAMP partition and restarted, I got some crazy error about there not being any bootable info on it.
That's where I am at. I have found other posts with people who are having the same problem, but I have yet to find a solution that doesn't involve me buying some 3rd party software. I know it has something to do with (what is called in Microsoft world) the Master Boot Record, but I don't know how to modify that to reflect that the BOOTCAMP partition is a bootable logical drive. I remember in MS DOS land there was some command line FDSK /something command that you would run (I think it was /MBR) to reset the MBR. To me though, all of these terms are shadowy figures in the Ether.
What do I do???

p.s. I read somewhere to boot off the windows 7 disk and run the system repair tools. I tried that and no change.I got it. It CAN be done. At least on 10.6
How I made it happen (for free) on Snow Leopard:
1) partition, dupe etc all that jazz that you know. Make the mac side work, which it seems we've all been able to do no issues. I used SuperDuper! It worked just fine. (Had it on a disk. I assume you could use any other free way of doing this.)
2) New hard drive running, I used bootcamp assistant to partition the new drive for a new Bootcamp. I don't know if it's necessary to make the new partition this way for some reason, but it's what the process ultimately included, so maybe try without, but it worked with.
3) Natively running original drive on the windows side. Used DirveImage XML to clone windows partition onto new drive connected externally.
4) Back on new hard drive running natively. (Sorry for all the switching.) You'll note that the new Bootcamp partition is NOT bootable at this point. It won't come up in the usual 'alt on startup' boot menu.
Download rEFInd and install on mac side. Technically this is freeware or w/e, but for the love of god, throw money at this man. He totally deserves it.
5) Restarting the computer, rEFInd's boot manager finally recognizes windows. But you'll find windows is a little messed up and still won't quite boot. Get out your Windows CD and pop it in. Do the 'alt boot' thing. Your boot menu options are now "EFI Manager," "Bootcamp," and "Windows Disk." Or some such. Holy Crap! It recognizes Windows!
6) Boot to the CD and tell it to repair the windows volume. It will. My computer also had to do a disk check next time I booted to Windows, which took for-stupid-ever, but eventually worked. (I went to bed in between.)
7) Everything is running smoothly. Plus, you get the rEFInd boot manager, which is also great.
Deets: I have a late 2010 MBP 13". Snow leopard/Windows 7 32-bit (long story) Moved from original 320GB seagate momentus to new 750GB Seagate Momentus XT.
Feel free to share/copy&paste this solution as you see useful. Cheers!
