Lost my photo library!!!!!

While I was doing some work on my powerbook, I inadvertantly created a new photo library which wiped out my original library. I see my albums still memory but I can not important them into the photo library anymore. At this point iPhoto does not allow any action whatsoever. Any advice on how I can restore my original photo library with my 20 plus albumsÉ
Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Look in your Pictures folder to see if you have two iPhoto Library folders, one maybe iPhoto Library_1? I think maybe that's what happened and you're looking at the new one with the old one sitting in the same folder. If that's the case, move the _1 to the desktop and launch iPhoto again. It may just open the old one or tell you it can't find the library and ask you to find it or create a new one. Opt for find and navigate to your Pictures folder and select it. If the new library opens satisfactorily and all is there, you can delete the folder that's on the Desktop.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I'm running iPhoto '08 on an eMac G4 using OS 10.5.8 and have lost my photo library. Any ideas as to how to find it and /or rebuild it? I know it is there on my disk.

However, in pictures there seems to be a complete set of my photos(?).
    I'm don't understand what you're saying here.
In the iphoto window I somehow managed to open a type of "photo library" that includes every photo I've every downloaded on my computer in multiple and entirely random order.
This can happen if someone inadvertently drags the HD icon or even the home folder icon to iPhoto Window. The best soluion for that is to restore from your back up.

  • I lost entire photo library in iPhoto.  How do I retrieve the lost library?

I went to open iPhoto only to find my entire photo library was gone.  I have no idea how this has happened.  I backed up my photos on an external hard drive but cannot access them that way.  I keep getting a message saying it's a backed up version and I have to hit "option" while I open iPhoto.  That is not working either.  How can I find these lost photos?

What kind of backup of your library do you have?  If it is aTime Machine backup, see this document:
iPhoto '11: Restoring from Time Machine with iPhoto '11 (9.2 or later) and OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later) - Apple Support
I went to open iPhoto only to find my entire photo library was gone.  I have no idea how this has happened.
What did you do, before this happened?  Have you been updating or upgrading software?  Moved your iPhoto Library to a new location on external drives?
Have there been crashes? which version of iPhoto or MacOS X do you have?

  • I've lost my photo library and iPhoto pictures & i want to get them back

re: ''Still, my inbox now displays only the emails on the server; these are proper synchronised.''
As you have 'synchronised' the folder, I assume you use an IMAP mail account.
Please confirm that you use IMAP or Pop.
IMAP mail accounts see a remote view of the subscribed folders that are on the server.
So if your webmail account only shows eg: 10 emails in Inbox and in Thunderbird you only see those 10 emails in the account Inbox then nothing is wrong in that they are the same.
Are you saying that the emails were deleted off the server, so that they are also deleted in thunderbird?
    check: Tools > Activity manager
Does it say any anything about deleting loads of emails?
Do you know if compacting occured?
    One possibility:
Your Inbox folder was corrupted and then the folder was compacted either manually or automatically.
It removed all 'marked as deleted; emails, but as the folder was corrupted, Tb could not determine where the 'marked as deleted' email ended and therefore may have deleted good emails.
If this occured then there is no way to get them back unless you had a backup of your emails.
It is advised that you keep an Inbox for incoming new mail and move good emails into suitable folders for organising and compact the folder on a regular basis.
See info on keeping a healthy Thunderbird:

  • IPhoto has lost my photo library?!

iPhoto says I have 6000 photos, which I do, but only 800 appear anywhere on the site. One day they were there and a couple weeks later, the next time I wanted to get to them, they were gone. Help?

I have an aperture library of work photos and 2 of my personal photos. And what's on the cloud. And don't even get me started on Dropbox, which imported every work photo I have two, three, sometimes four times, thereby maxing out my dropbox account--and I had told it no before it took them all. At least it only took the work photos. Trying to get them off is an absolute nightmare.

What haven't you backed them up? You should always have a back up of any important material on your Mac. Make one now:
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

  • Need to go into photo library to retrieve photos that technical support lost at the store.  Told to do "command Option" at the same time - than click on "I-photo"  then check the box "repair the i-photo library.... I have had two appointment at the store

How can i retrieve my photo library that got lost by your techs at the apple store?

First to locate your library on the hard drive launch iPhoto with the Option key held down so you get this window:
Your library should be displayed in the window and it's location displayed below the window when clicked on.
If that fails to locate your library download and run Find Any File to search for a file named "ThumbJPGSegment.data" which is a file common to all versions of iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.
Once you find the library you can try to repair if it doesn't open as it should by trying this:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • I have lost my photos/videos when i imported from my ipad 2 to my new imac latest version and it's not reading the files.  I have downloaded iMac library manager and can see them. can someone shed some light please ?

i have lost my photos/videos when i imported from my ipad 2 to my new imac latest version OS X 10.8.4
and it's not reading the files.  I have downloaded iMac library manager and can see them.  when i go back into iphoto i'm getting the following message :
Do you want to switch the current iPhoto Library from “iPhoto Library.photolibrary” to “iPhoto Library.photolibrary” and relaunch iPhoto?
I don't know what to do - please help !!!!
can someone shed some light please ?

So it appears you have only one library on the hard drive. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed to that library:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
First, empty the Trash, if possible.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) 2>&- | wc -l | pbcopy
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be a number. It's automatically copied to the Clipboard. Please paste it into a reply.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

Hi, I just updated my mac from version10.6 to 10.9.3 os mavericks. i went to open iPhoto and it says "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade." does this mean I have lost all photos i had in there? It does not give me a choice, it just says quit or upgrade? p.s. i didn't realise ther was  a way to back up my computer beforehand, which i am guessing this is time machine?

    1. No, you haven't.
    2. Back up the iPhoto library(this can be done through Time Machine or by dragging it to a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended) and then click Upgrade.
    3. Aside from Time Machine and drag-copying items from your home folder, programs such as the Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, and SuperDuper can make backups.

  • When exporting a photo to photo library, all EXIF data is lost. What rational is behind this?

When exporting a photo to photo library, all EXIF data is lost.
    What rational is behind this?

Thanks for your reply on this!
One issue seems to be with Foto Library app itself. When running an auto-correct there it looks like EXIF will be stripped more or less completely.
Second issue is in iPhoto app on iOS when working on RAW. When exporting to the roll the EXIF is modified in a way. It was keeping most of the EXIF in case of Canon 5D MKII that I tested today, but the EXIF data is definately changed, e.g. lens type is different because maybe some fields are ignored there. Also the images are silently scaled down by 50% which is kind of annoying.
The initial problem was observed with a Pentax K7 and I will need to reproduce the issue in this config I assume. Maybe tomorrow I can do this.
