Lost my project in iMovie 10.0

I have OS 10.9 and iMovie 10.0.
I updated projects on opening the new iMovie - worked on the project,
shared to iTunes and Theater and all was good.  When I opened iMovie again all that remains is the sound files- NO video clips.
The old projects are in the 'iMovie' folder along with an empty 'UpdatedToiMovie10' folder.
What do I do now and if starting over how do I import the old project to iMovie 10???

ah! this solved it.

  • Wife lost her project from iMovie

she worked on this "movie" for days. kept coming back to it and working on it. it was always there. saved itself each session. this evening it is not there anywhere. we are very new to mac and I have no idea how to look for it or where. she is coming unhinged right about now. can anyone guide me here? Thanks in advance.

I ran into this same problem, but my movie files were still in the directory Movies/iMovie Projects. Even though my projects were in there, iMovie wouldn't show them, and would freeze. I tried trashing the iMovie preferences, but that did not help. I was really unhappy! I thought I lost days of work.
If your movies are still in that directory, I was able to recover by doing the following:
    - make sure you are not in iMovie.
    - first, make a copy of your iMovie Projects folder by selecting the folder and doing a "File-> Duplicate" from the Finder.
    - next, rename the original folder called iMovie Projects to something else (I simply appended the name "old" so it was iMovie Projects Old
    - start iMovie - it will create a new iMovie Projects folder
    - quit iMovie
    - drag your projects into the newly created iMovie folder (drag from either the duplicate or the iMovie Projects Old folder - make sure you keep a backup!)
    - start iMovie and voila! Your projects are back.
I hope this works for you, too. It really saved me!

  • I exited iMovie and lost my project.  I am able to find it in Finder, under the Movies tab, but can not get it back to a project in iMovie.  Is there a way to restore it?

Please help!  I exited iMovie and lost my project that I've been working on for days... I am able to find it in "Finder" under iMovie Projects... but I am unable to open it as a Project in iMovie.  I am using iMovie '11, with no time machine, and I'm on a MacBook Pro.

I fully sympathise with you, as I recently experienced the same issue (as have many others).
Projects always appear as normal in Finder in the Home folder Movies/iMovie Projects (or on an external disk at the top level in Movies/iMovie Projects). Nothing looks untoward there.
However, when iMovie is opened again after an editing session, the most recent project worked on does not appear in the listing of projects in iMovie's Project Library - although it is still listed in the Finder folder . This happens for no apparent reason - no unexpected quits, freezes, or crashes, and nothing else out of the ordinary. iMovie is simply not recognizing the project. It can't even be opened by double-clicking on the project in Finder.

Sorry to bombard you with all these links, but as you will see there are others here reporting the same problem. No solution has been forthcoming unfortunately.
Be sure to provide feedback to Apple - in iMovie's menu click on iMovie > Provide iMovie Feedback, then complete the online form.

  • Help! Lost project in iMovie 10.0.2

Working on project iMovie 10.0.2, "Quit" window popped up said start-up disk almost full. Lost entire project before I could "share" (save). Any way to recover? Re-started iMovie and tired to paste files into new project, but files are "empty."

I have the same problem. It says I have 7 projects but only displays 6. Happend after using Voice over recording.
All movie clips are still there, just not all my editing info.

  • Help with recovering lost project in iMovie '09

Thank you in advance for your help! I may have accidentally deleted a very important rcproject in my iMovie project folder. I've searched using Finder. I even downloaded Stellar Phoenix in hopes of finding the project. No luck so far. Is there any other tricks to find missing projects in iMovie '09?

Check to see if it is in the Trash ( at the far right of the dock). If it is, drag it back to the Movies/iMovie Projects folder.
Better yet, if you are running time machine, go back in time and bring a copy of the rcproject file back.

  • IMovie crashed and lost all projects

I just got the new MacBook Air for Christmas and am running Mavericks and iMovie 10.0.1.  I have been working on a 20 minute long video for school for the last few weeks until today when my iMovie suddenly crashed and now my projects are no where to be found.  I have tried deleting the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist file (but i don't even have that file, mine is something like 'com.apple.imovieapp.shared ... plist)in the preferences folder but that did not do anything.  I have also deleted and reinstalled iMovie but still nothing. When I open up iMovie my libraries are there and I can see the video names under the libraries, but there are empty.  I can also see some of my events when I click on "All Events".  I have done everything I can think of to try to get my movies back. Also, when I go to my iMovie projects folder from my user name in the HD, it is there as .rcproject but it is in a data format. Unfortunately, since it is a new computer, I do not have a time machine backup to recover from.  If anyone had any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated! I'm desperate!
    Thanks for your help!

If you have  iMovie Projects and imovie Events folders in <user name> / Movies, these are from iMovie 9, so I infer that you have transferred them from an old machine and upgraded them to imovie 10.
If this is correct you should still have your projects and events.  iMovie 10 stores everything in packages with the extension .imovielibrary.  If this has become corrupt you should be able to upgrade them again (they will automatically go into a new library).  You  will find an empty file with a name something like "updated to iMovie 10" in the events and projects folders.  These need to be trashed in order to allow them to be upgraded afreash.
    Geoff.

I have a finalized project in iMovie '11.  Shared it on Youtube, Facebook, and Vimeo.  Then, when I shared it to iDVD, it reverted to a previous version of the project, so my titles and pictures were out of sequence.  Now, in my list of projects, my project is there, but finalized as the previous version which is all out of sequence.   My true final project is now gone!  What happend?
I didn't notice this problem until after the DVD was burned in iDVD.  Then, when I played the DVD in a public setting, I was a bit embarrassed by what played.

    Hi
    My first thoughts are
    • iMovie ill behaving - Trash the iMovie pref file - use to set things right
    • in reg. to Photos - Did You change iPhoto Photo Library - Then iMovie get's lost as it peeks into iPhoto on start up to see where photos are stored. Set iPhoto back to first Photo Library (when iMovie is not running) then start iMovie.

All my finished projects that are in the Library infected with the same symptoms and it happens only after I went into the problematic project.
I tried to open a new project and everything works
...I also tried throwing Recent Files, in the past It solved the problem ,not this time ...
the problem is that this project will take me a long, long time to rebuild

This recently happened to me.  I am a novice, but it seemed like that project got corrupted some how.
    I deleted it.
Went to time machine and picked it up again when I knew it was working ok.
I lost a few hours of work, but not the entire project.
Once I had the project back from time machine, it worked fine (but like I said, I lost a little bit of work).

  • Can't save projects in iMovie

    I keep getting this message:
    Cannot Save Changes
Please check the disk to ensure there is enough free space and you have permission to write projects. iMovie will try to save periodically, but your changes will be lost if you quit iMovie before the problem is resolved.
I have already "repaired permissions" in the Utility Disk and it's still not allowing me to save my project.
    What can I try next?

  • Lost Video project

I  have been working on a project for several weeks, but on booting up this morning i find the named project missing although all the other projects and event clips were there. I looked in the trash, I looked back over several days in Time Machine which backs up every hour, I searched in Finder under the project name.  Nothing ! Yet everything else was there on a day by day basis.  I find this totally weird as nothing else is missing, just all the many week's work in putting all this together. I can not recall doing anything untoward and have worked steadily on a repetitive process daily.  How can something just vanish even in the external hard drive backup ? Does anyone have any suggestions ?   I can obviously start the whole project again, but the weeks of work that went into it will be frustrating, and surely it must be somewhere.

    Hi CMBP,
Sorry it's taken a few days to get back to you. I've been busy re-editing and exporting the project I had "lost", among other things. All is well now. I did most of the work in Final Cut Pro X but then had trouble with the background rendering and FCP X freezing. So, had to remove some effects, titles and transitions, then finish the job in iMovie. My "client" (family friend) is very happy with the final product (a 50th wedding anniversary). So all's well that ends well.
Earlier you asked about Final Cut Pro X and mentioned Adobe Premiere as the preferred choice of a camera store guy. As you appear to be fairly new to video editing, my advice would be to persevere with iMovie. It's quite an easy program to use once you get the hang of how things work. Your earlier reading of information in the links I provided should help with this. Final Cut Pro X is an amazing piece of work, but there is quite a learning curve, being far more complex than iMovie. You can move up to this once you feel comfortable with iMovie. FCP X has a similar interface to iMovie '11, but there is lots more going on under the hood! I can't comment on Adobe Premiere as I've never used it.
I'm still confused as to what you've done with your iMovie Events (not to mention Projects!). If you have moved them out of the iMovie Events folder in the Finder, they must be returned there, otherwise iMovie will not recognize them. One way of doing this is to drag Event clips into iMovie's Drop Box. When iMovie is next opened, you will be given the opportunity to import these clips into an iMovie Event (either a new one or an existing one). I've inserted below the Help article from iMovie Help (italicised and in quotes):
"Import video from iMovie Drop Box
When you import video into iMovie the first time, iMovie creates a folder on your hard disk called iMovie Drop Box.
You can copy or save video files to this drop box without opening iMovie. To find the drop box folder on your hard disk, go to your home folder/Movies/iMovie Events. In the Finder window, the home folder has the house icon to the left of its name.
Every time you launch iMovie, it checks if there are new files in the drop box and if so, it asks you if you want to import them into iMovie. The drop box is a convenient way to save files to your computer quickly without having to import them into iMovie right away.
To import files from iMovie Drop Box:
Open iMovie.iMovie detects if you have new items in the drop box that haven’t yet been imported.
In the dialog that opens, do any of the following:
To add the files to an existing Event, select “Add to existing Event” and then choose an options from the pop-up menu.
To create a new Event with the files, select “Create new Event” and then type a name in the text field.
If you’re importing HD video, select “Optimize video,” and then choose Full or Large from the pop-up menu.
    Click Import.
The files now appear in iMovie, within the Event you specified at the time the files were imported."
You said in your last post: "I tried  Camera archive and all I get is my Sony camera which I don't understand. I tried imovie iOS project and imovie HD project. What is the difference because none of them enabled me to import anything either from projects or events."
Camera Archive is a very important feature in iMovie that allows you to archive the original footage from your camera. It's essential to do this so that you can always go back to the archive if things go amiss with the Events in iMovie and you no longer have the clips on your camera. The clips are stored in an Archive folder in their original AVCHD format. These can be imported at any time to an iMovie Event and will be converted to the AIC format, ready for editing in a Project (as I described in an earlier post here). To import from a Camera Archive, from iMovie's menu select File > Import ⇒ Camera Archive then navigate to the Archive folder to select the clips for import. You can get more information from iMovie Help - search for "Make a back-up copy (archive) of the contents of your camcorder".
Regarding iMovie iOS projects - these relate to clips taken with an iPhone or iPad that have been edited in those devices using the iMovie for iOS app. The edited project can be imported to iMovie on your Mac for further work if desired. An iMovie HD project is a project that has been edited on an earlier version of iMovie (either iMovie HD - version 5, or iMovie HD - version 6). Both these versions work quite differently, and have a completely different interface, to the later versions (iMovie '08 through iMovie '11). The earlier versions (up to iMovie HD 6) are no longer supported by Apple, but Apple had the foresight to allow the earlier projects to be imported to the current version (although in a limited form).
Hope all this helps to clarify things for you. Please post back if you need more information or help.

I was working on my project, then Macbook restarted itself. After that, I re-opened iMovie again and lost my project. I really have no idea what's happening and this project is so important to me. Anyone knows how to bring back my project?

  • How to copy project from iMovie 11 to iMovie 10?

I get confused on iMovie naming, so let me start with this: I have projects and clips in the old version of iMovie, iMovie 11.  When I click on iMovie > About iMovie, it shows the version as 9.0.9.  I will refer to this as iMovie 9.
I also have the projects and clips in the newer version of iMovie.  When I click on iMovie > About iMovie, it shows the version as 10.0.3.  I will refer to this as iMovie 10.
I want to copy a project (the set of video clips. audio clips, titles and transitions) from iMovie 9 to iMovie 10.  Can someone explain how to do this?
With the recent update of iMovie 10, a number of my projects now appear as "Missing File".  They appear to have been corrupted or lost in the upgrade.  i still have the original projects in iMovie 9, but do not know how to copy them over to iMovie 10.
I do not want to do a mass replacement of projects in iMovie 9 to iMovie 10, as some of the projects in iMoive 10 have been edited with newer content.  I want transfer selected projects form iMovie 9 to iMovie 10.
    Any help is appreciated ...

iMovie '11 (as in 2011) is version 9. The new version iMovie is version 10. Yoou see it sometimes refferred to by Apple as iMovie (2013).

Projects and Events cannot simply be copied from version 9 to 10, the files themselves must be updated. Unfortuantely, Apple only offers an all or nothing method for doing the updating as described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6012?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
iMovie 10 will only update the contents of the iMovie Projects an iMovie Events Folders used by iMovie 9. So you could get an external hard drive and use iMovie 9 to move all the Projects and Events that you don't want to update to version 10 to the external.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2289
Disconnect the external drive and run the updating from iMovie 10.
However, it may be just as easy to update everything and then delete any Projects or Events you don't want in iMovie version 10.
