Lost Networking with Windows NT on 10.4.5 upgrade

I used to be able to connect to my (antique) Windows NT computer (at work) when I was using 10.4.2 via our local network by simply using:
smb://SYMPHONY
(where SYMPHONY is the computer name on the network)--nothing changed on the NT side, BTW.
Now I get the "Error -36" message on my Mac. I've gone through about 2 hours of searching trying to find something that will tip me off, but--admittedly--I'm a networking novice. Further, I don't understand the inner workings of NT at all and where to find things on NT, so I'm quite frustrated.
Both machines are on the same subnet (255.255.255.0), and I have the network IP address for both machines. I've tried various configs following the "smb" based on what I've seen in my searching--nothing's making the connection between the machines. I even tried making a new admin-enabled user account on my mac in case something was corrupt in my original settings.
Upon upgrading to 10.4.5, I did 'repair permissions' and 'fsck' in single-user mode, and no external devices are connected, in case you need to know.
Can anyone help (in layman's terms)? I would surely appreciate it!

Regards..
I also have the problem with one NT Server, it gives error -36 when you try to log to the smb share, when I try to mount from shell, I get this error:
#mount_smbfs -u mylocaluser -g mylocalgroup //ntuser:ntpass@ip_address/share /mount_directory
"mount_smbfs: negotiate phase failed: syserr = Software caused connection abort"
I tried to recreate this error from scratch, (ie. install NT 4 in another machine, and install all the (yuck) service packs one to one), but I can't get the same error, it just connect, (I already use the nsmb.conf file to enable plain text auth.)
#mount_smbfs -u mylocaluser -g mylocalgroup //ntuser:ntpass@ipaddress_newNT/share /mount_directory
mount_smbfs: spnego blob2principal error 1
and voila it's already connected.
the problem is with os X 10.3 it connects to both servers but with 10.4.6 only connects to the brand new installed,
I did another test with smbclient and it works on both:
# smbclient //server_ip/ntshare -U ntuser%ntpass
session request to serveripaddress failed (Called name not present)
session request to 207 failed (Called name not present)
Domain=[MYDOMAIN] OS=[Windows NT 4.0] Server=[NT LAN Manager 4.0]
smb: \> exit
I get the same from both with smbclient.
any hints will be appreciated.

  • HP LaserJet M1120 MFP will not print on wireless network with Windows 8.1 operating system

The printer worked on the wireless network with Windows 8.
I have been advised that it does not work with windows 8.1 because a driver is required. However this is not available to download.
It is ridiculous that by having the latest operating system I am unable to use the HP printer on the wireless network
When will HP have the driver to download?

  • How do I connect to a Wi-Fi network with Windows 10?

QuestionHow do I connect to a Wi-Fi / wireless network with Windows 10?
AnswerNote: This article describes connecting to wireless networks in Windows 10. Separate articles exists for doing this in Windows 8 and Windows 7.
To connect to a wireless network in Windows 10, follow these simple steps:
Select the wireless icon in the bottom-right near the clock. If you don't see it, you might need to press the up arrow to see more icons.
A panel will open on the right that lists detected wireless networks.
At the bottom of the panel, you'll see buttons for Wi-Fi and Airplane mode.
Ensure Wi-Fi is enabled and Airplane mode is disabled.
Select your wireless network from the list.
You can check the box next to Connect automatically if you prefer.
    Now select Connect.
If it requires a password, it'll prompt you. In that case, enter your credentials and follow the prompts.
You can also watch this video showing how to connect to Wi-Fi with Windows 10:

What are you trying to do the password on .. I have never noticed that it is limited to specific lengths unless you use WEP.. surely you don't use wep.

  • Networking with Windows PC

I have 2 computers. One is a Powerbook G4 12-inch. The other is Dell Dimension E310. They both connect to the Internet perfectly via an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. I would like to transfer files (picture, movies, etc.) from the Powerbook to the Dell. I created a Network Place on my Dell. In the Network tab in the Finder in the Powerbook, the Folder of my workgroup is there. I try place a file inside that folder but comes up with "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured. (Error code -61)" All I want to do is set-up a netywork so the 2 computers can recognize each other and send files to each other once in a while via the Airport Extreme Base Station. If this cannot be done, please tell me. If it can be done, what are the easiest steps to get this done so the 2 computers can recognize each other and send files to one another?

If you are asking about such a question it is best answered by posting a new question.
You can cut and paste the question you posted here and ask about networking with Windows servers. You will get more and better responses from more mac experts.
You should have no problems. The key word being "should". The reality is that frequent changes to X security and the Windows environment may break the ease with which you can network. Don't worry about reading and writing to a disk that has been formatted diffently. Mac and windows machines are frequently interfacing with drives formatted in foreign formats with no problem. The network should handle the differences.
What you should be concerned with is the IT support that you may or may not have with an orphan laptop. Many in IT don't want to deal with macs (or linux, or anything else). Without their support you may not be happy. It won't be the mac's fault but that does not matter.
The good thing about the new mac laptops is that you can also install Windows and if any problems persist you can switch to Windows while resolving any mac issues. It really is pretty tough to claim that macs can't exist in pc land any more. Before you may have had to resort to virtual pc (with it's issues) but now you can just reboot into Windows. You should not have to but it is there if needed. I see no reason to not get the mac.

  • OS9.2- Is it possible to network with windows PCs ?

Relatively new to the world of macs -have a Quicksilver(2002) dualbooting into OS9.2.2 & OSX Tiger. It's connected via a netgear router to the internet which works fine in either system.
When booted into OSX I've worked out how to network with the 2 other Window XP computers that are connected to the router, but I can't figure out how to get the mac to see the other computers when booted in OS9.2. Is it possible or not?
Also although I can access shared documents on the PCs while in OSX I can't get the mac to see the printer that is on the network (connected via 1 of the PCS.)
Is it because it's an OKI C3200 colour laserprinter & it's incompatible with a mac, or have I just not set it up correctly?

OS9 doesn't understand SMB, it can be set up to read PC disks via SCSI, but haven't found a way to Network it yet... unless you can get hold of an old copy of Virtual PC®, or get some Mac Services on the PC itself.

  • Can't see wireless network with Windows Vista

I have the Airport Extreme N and two PCs, one with W XP and one with W Vista. Everything works fine with the XP PC. On the Vista PC, I can connect to the network with LAN, but I can’t see the wireless network.
The W Vista PC can identify other networks around the block, so the Broadcom 802.11g network adapter seems to work fine. The wireless runs on channel 13, which is OK for the XP PC. I have installed the latest update for the Airport Extreme.
Any suggestions to what I can do to get the W Vista PC working on wireless?
    Best, Kasper

    Hi,
I also have the same problem.
My belkin wirelss router is set to channel 13, therefore my macbook cannot see this network when it search's, for the above reasons.
However unlike the situation above I am unable to change from channel 13 as we have discovered in the past that this is the only channel that is not in use by other networks around our area. The rest gave us interferance troubles.
I have a number of windows laptops in the house and there is a setting that you can change so the laptop will search for channel 13. I was wondering if anyone is aware of a setting on the macbook that will make the airport card search for 1 - 13 not just channels 1 - 10 as it is now.
I thought I would add this question to this topic as it is very similar. I hope I was correct in doing so.
    Thanks,
    Josh

  • Networking with Windows Security Issues

Hey guys. I'm new to the Mac world so please consider me Mactarded when you reply. I'm pretty competent with windows and have successfully shared files between my PC and my mac. The issue is this. When I attempt to connect to the shared files on my PC from my mac it asks me for a password. Great! BUT...when I connect to a shared file on my mac from my PC there is no password prompt. This makes me nervous. Is there anyway to get the PC to ask for a password when I attempt to connect to the Mac?

Windows Vista is quite idiotic when it comes to connecting to Mac volumes. XP never had trouble with it, but Vista is set by default to not allow it. The process of getting the setting changed is quite convoluted with Vista Home Premium, which doesn't have the necessary tools for changing the setting.
Here's what worked for me (I wrote it down so I could duplicate it in the future):
Go to the Start menu and go to All Programs -> Accessories -> Run
    Type "Regedit.exe" and press return
    Go to HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
Select Lsa, then choose Edit -> New -> Key
Type "DWORD" (without quotes) as the name in the list
Double-click the text "(Default)" in the right-hand pane
Enter "1" (without quotes) as the value and press OK
Quit Regedit and restart the machine
Log in to the remote Mac using "ip_address\username" as the user name

I have a sony laptop with window 7 64 bit initially which I upgraded to windows 8 64 bit. But due to formatting later, I had to reinstall the windows and this time I installed windows 8 32 bit. Now I have tried installing iTunes for 64 bit windows 8 as well as 32 bit Windows 8 but none of them is getting installed. The message I get is, "this programme is not compatible for your pc" (or words to that affect since I dont remember the exact words but this is the meaning).
Can some body send me the link to the right file please. I need iTunes to transfer files from my iPod and iPhone to my laptop.

  • Setting up a wireless network with windows XP PC

I may be getting a mac computer later this year & would like to know how to set up a wireless network between the mac & a windows XP PC. The PC has a DSL modem attached to it with a yellow line going from modem to PC & another Grey line going from the modem to the back of a phone in our kitchen. Our house is fairly big, it is one story but the rooms are sprawled out with a lot of clutter. I would like to have reliable internet access on my mac, & if it is a macbook pro I would like to be able to get to the internet throughout the house. The most important thing is stable reliable internet access as I am taking online classes. I would probably take the macbook pro into a bedroom or other adjacent room. The bedroom is further away, through 2 or 3 walls. The Adjacent rooms is one wall way.
I know this seems very basic, but I need a lot of help with this as I have never used a mac before (have been a windows user) & have never used more than just the one PC in the house, let alone a wireless network.
my mother along with I are both taking online classes, so sometimes there is competition for the the 1 computer & with my graphic design degree a mac has been recommended to me. So we are finding it would be easier to have more than one computer in the house so we can access our classes anytime.
So anyone, can this be done without breaking the bank?

I'm guessing that Modem was provided by your Internet Service Provider ?
They are the best people to talk to about upgrading that Modem to a Wireless one.
Usually if you're running a modem and phone from the same DSL line there's a small splitter box that plugs into the phone socket and then one wire connects your modem and another your phone. Picture below - if you do have one of these then post back and we can give better advice on a wireless modem to replace your current one.

  • Lost iTunes with Windows update, now I can't sync iPod Touch

My computer recently updated windows and I lost iTunes and my music library.  When I re-installed iTunes, I tried to sync my iPod but it's telling me that I am synced with another library and it wont let me transfer my music from my iPod to the music library.  It will only let me transfer purchased music.  Is there a way I can restore my old library or will I have to start fresh all over again?  It will not let me sync my iPod with my daughters either whether home-sharing is on or not.  I also tried home-sharing, it does nothing.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
