Lost original macbook disc. Can I Install a retail Leopard disc on a MB.

I have a macbook a friend gave me but he did not have the install disc for it. He took out the hard drive when he gave me the MB, so I am trying to reinstall the OS. I put in the leopard install disc and it boots to install great but stops one step before with a mouse diagram like its not connected. As soon as I connect an external mouse and keyboard all is fine. I am wondering if this is because I dont have the Macbook install disc? Can I Install a retail Leopard disc on a MB. Thank you so much for any help you all can give me.
Thanks again,
J

yes it is a retail version. Came in the black holographic box with the big X. There is no hard drive in the computer. I am trying to test the machine by booting up from the install disc. I know it sounds crazy but i have not received my new drive yet. LOL now if I can convince someone with a macbook to remove the hard drive and try booting up with a retail version to get the same result. . Any takers?

  • MacBook a1181 can't install osx 10.4-10.5-10.6 etc etc

Hi guys, I have a problem with my macbook late 2007 model a1181 intel core 2 duo 2.2GHz ...
I bought and installed a new hard drive (120gb to 500gb) but unfortunately going to install the operating system will not let me install it (osx leopard) disc I have is a "retail disc" ... I also tried with other operating systems but the same problem ... I state that I formatted the hard drive with the procedure cosigliata support from apple .. What should I do?

The answer may be to try a disc that is much newer than the computer that the hardware configuration supports; a retail Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.x DVD installer costs about $19. from Apple. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard see specifications for detailed info.
Go to a serial number identify database such as http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php to find out more about your computer, including the version of boot install it shipped with. Also get a download of Mactracker application from http://mactracker.ca/ for information. Everymac.com has information online, after you know what exact model and year you have, look it up here: http://www.everymac.com/systems/ For ideas on repair you can look up iFixit repair guides for Mac at http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Mac
    {If you really have the correct original MacBook install-restore disc for that machine, you should be able to start the computer from the disc and then use the version in there to check and try to repair the computer. I doubt you have it.}
While there may be a problem with the DVD Combo or SuperDrive, perhaps you should take the computer to an authorized Apple trained specialist so they can see if the optical drive is bad, or if you still are trying your luck with unsupported install discs.
    Good luck & happy computing!

Call AppleCare (1-1800-APL-CARE) and give then the serial number.  They will send you a new copy of the two disks for shippingand handling of $16 each (I think $16 each).

  • In how many different computers can I install my snow leopard?

In how many different computers can I install my snow leopard?
The one that came when I bought my Macbook Pro.

Kappy, I believe that he's asking about Snow Leopard, not Lion. Your answer would be correct in reference to Lion purchased from the Mac App Store, but not Lion shipped as original OS on a new Mac.
derojas, assuming you have a standard OEM, it-came-with-the-computer Snow Leopard installer, you are licensed to use it only on that one computer. You are not licensed to install it on any others. Many OEM discs can install only on the specific hardware model with which they shipped, anyway.
If you have a standard retail installer, it's technically possible to install it on any Mac capable of running Snow Leopard. However, again, the license grants you the freedom to install it on only one Mac at a time (i.e. you'd have to delete it from one Mac before you could install it on another).
There are family packs and other multi-licensing arrangements that permit the owner to install Snow Leopard on more than one Mac. You need to check the license to find out how many and what other restrictions might apply.

    As Niel pointed out, yes.  The disk probably will look like the MBP disk (4) in this screenshot;

  • My Mac OSX is coming up with error message when i try to write a disc "The disc can't be burned because the disc drive is not accessible (error code 0x80020020)." Same also when I tried my external disc writer-any clues?

My Mac OSX (version 10.7.5) is coming up with error message when I try to write a disc "The disc can’t be burned because the disc drive is not accessible (error code 0x80020020)." I have tried several discs with the same message - Same also when I tried my external disc writer. Both disc drives will read my discs that have music or photos on it, it just won't write any new discs - any clues?

    Hi Klaus1
So, I tried all the suggestions and followed the links - all to no avail.
as you can see, (screenshot below) my iMac is a 21.5 inch late 2009 model which isn't showing in the updates listed above
My system report shows that my Mac has the following:
I reset the PRAM and the SMC - still have the same error message when I try to burn discs. I've used both CD's and DVD's and tried with my external Discwriter too.
    Any further suggestions??

  • Retail Leopard disc will not install on Jan/08 MacBook 2.2ghz?

I purchased a used MacBook 2.2ghz with 4GB of RAM in it. It has Leopard 10.5.3 on it, however it is setup with the previous owner's details and some files. I wanted to wipe the hard drive and install Leopard from my own family pack. I purchased this disc from apple.com, I DID NOT pirate or burn it, it is an original disc in my family pack retail box of Leopard.
When I try to boot on the disc, is starts the setup like normal but then it says "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer, please check the system requirements."
I obviously meet the system requirements as Leopard is already on there, and this very Leopard disc worked on my older MacBook. Is it possible that even though the MacBook I purchased came with Tiger, it was made after Leopard and therefore this disc cannot install on it? I'm very confused here.
The disc is labeled as follows:
    Mac OS X Leopard
    Install DVD
    Version 10.5
    2Z691-6307-A
The MacBook box has the following labeling:
    MB 13.3/2.2/2x512/120/SD-DL/WHITE
    MB062LL/B
    Model No: A1181
    Any ideas? I am stumped!

The seller may have given you the wrong discs if you have Tiger restore discs. The model number of MacBook you mention (MB062LL/B) came with Leopard and not Tiger. See here: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP12
You need to reinstall by using the Leopard install discs that originally shipped with this Mac. 10.5.0 on your Family Pack DVD is older than what came preinstalled on the MacBook. No Mac computer can run an older OS than what originally shipped with it. Apple has a tech note about this here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186

  • I have Microsoft Office 2011 Student Edition installed on MacBook Pro; Can I install Microsoft Office Windows 2008 onto Mac without deleting Microsoft Office 2011?

I have previously installed Microsoft Office Student Edition 2011 on my MacBook Pro.  While installing Microsoft Office 2008 Windows; message prompts to delete Microsoft Office 2011.  Is there a way around this issue?

Office 2008 was a Mac version. The equvalent Win version is 2007. So there is no "Office 2008 Windows." Which version are your trying to install?
Are you using Boot Camp to run Win on your MBP and want to install Office for Win there? I can't see that being a problem..
I do know that the regular version of Office Mac won't run properly if the trial version is present. The installer is set up to look for other versions, resumably to keep the trial version and the regualr from clashing.
Office Mac 2011 is equiv to Office for Win 2010
    Office Mac 2008   "    "     " Office for Win 2007
    Office Mac 2004   "    "     " Office for Win 2003

  • If I have a MacBook Air, can I install a Mountain Lion VM on my PC?

I have recently purchased a MacBook Air with Mountain Lion installed on it. I would like to do some development back and forth from PC to Mac, and in some cases, it would be very convenient to do some work on my PC instead. Is it legal to install a Mountain Lion VM on my PC? If so, how can I do it using the Mountain Lion installed on my Mac?
    Replies are greatly appreciated.

You can't install OS X Mountain Lion on a PC because Apple doesn't allow it. Also, you can't install it in a virtual machine in a PC because virtual machine apps for Windows doesn't support this.
However, you can run Mountain Lion on a virtual machine in your MacBook Air if you want. Parallels and VMware Fusion allows you to use Recovery HD in order to install Mountain Lion on a virtual machine, so you should consider the option

  • Help on installing Lightroom 5 on two computers... I have used it on a PC, but now I have bought a MacBook Pro, can I install it with the same license? If not, can I delete it on the PC and use it on Mac instead??

    Hi all,
I just read, that you can't install lightroom 5 on the same license on two different platforms because of different services provided.
Is it possible to delete the PC-version and continue solely with the MacVersion!?
kind regards, and thanks in advance
    Andreas

Unless things have changed your Lightroom purchase can be used on two PC's, 2 Macs, or one of each.  You just need to download the Mac version and install it on the Mac.  You should not have to do anything with the PC installation.

  • Lost applications due to "Erase and Install" option in Leopard Installation

I bought a new Macbook this morning at my local Apple Store, and they gave me a Macbook running Tiger as well as a Leopard Installation Disk. I wanted my Macbook to be just like new, so I called Apple Support and they told me to do an "Erase and Install." After I followed their directions and was finally running Leopard, I noticed that I lost programs: Garageband, iPhoto, and iMovie to name a few.
How can I get these applications back?
And it is absolutely ridiculous if I have to buy iLife '08 because I had these programs already on my computer with Mac OSX Tiger before Apple told me to "Erase and Install."
p.s. I received 2 other disks that seem to be of no help...2 Tiger Installation disks.

Ok if you purchased a new macbook reload the original os x tiger restore cd's you have to hold the c key at startup to boot from it format and reinstall mac os x tiger then once os x tiger is installed update to the latest version of tiger first then connect a external hard drive and use carbon copy cloner to backup your hard drive the reason for this is when you upgrade from tiger to leopard the os has a high tendency to remove the idvd and garageband content so none of your ilife apps will function after the upgrade this is why you need the external with it the first time you install mac os x leopard it will ask do you want to transfer your settings from another partition on this mac select this option and select the external and everything will be fine

  • Hard drive crashed. can i reinstall the snow leopard disc from before even though it was a single user?

My hard drive crashed on my macbook about a year ago. I bought a brand new hard drive and brand new full install snow leopard discs single user to install on my empty hard drive. about a year later the hard drive crashed again, but it was still under warranty so i sent it out to get a new one. now when i try to install the same snow leopard disc, it says it can not be installed on this computer. I feel like I've been ripped off now, because i have no operating system on my computer and i already spent $129 on the snow leopard disc a year ago. Is there anything i can do to install this? I also have an iMac, I heard you can take the operating system from that or something? I just need my macbook back.

Is there anything i can do to install this?
Yes. Boot from the installation disc, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, select the internal drive, and partition it with the default options. Then run the Installer.
