Lost original start up CDs iBook G4

I can't get past the initial grey screen on start up with my (old) iBook G4, and have tried all sorts of fixes apart from using the original start-up disks, because I can't find them...!
Does anyone know how I can replace the required disks? As I understand it they are specific to my individual computer. Figured I might be able to get them through Apple or sthg, but don't want to spend too much considering all my stuff was backed up anyway (fairly recently) and I've just bought a new Macbook. Would be good to get the iBook running though so I could port my stuff across and maybe pass it on to my niece!
Would appreciate any help!

That does sound pretty expensive! There is one thing that you could try doing that won't cost anything, and that is to see if you can download the AHT and burn a disc and see if you can boot from that:
http://www.info.apple.com/support/aht.html
If this works, you will be able to at least evaluate the hardware and decide if the iBook is worth putting any money into. I would be inclined to not put any real money into it until you have run the AHT and determined that everything is working properly.
Depending on the iBook, it would also run Tiger and possibly even Leopard. If it is the one with the 800 MHz processor, it will not be able to run Leopard. I don't know what sources are available in the UK that would be like EBay or Craig's List, but you could try hunting for a full retail version of Tiger.
You said you tied a lot of things. Did you try a PRAM reset followed by a Safe Boot?

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455?viewlocale=en_US
Hold down the keys until you hear the third chime. Then you can hold down the shift key and try to boot into Safe Mode, which often takes a long time.
How is your stuff backed up? If you happened to have made a bootable clone on an external firewire drive, you could boot up from that.
It may be worth a hunt for the original discs. For example, if you saved the original box and packaging, you may have left the discs in it. Or you may have squirreled them away in a good safe place. Maybe think about it as you go to sleep at night, and maybe it'll come back to you where they might be.
The iBook can be run from the power adaptor alone and even from an external firewire hard drive. I would recommend running it like this for a while, making sure it's working before investing any real money in it. Also check the iBook support site--I think there may still be a battery recall, and if you happen to have one that has been recalled, you could get a free replacement battery.
IBooks are often prone to logic board problems, and if this is the basic problem, I don't think it will be worth the cost of repair. You might want to look at this site:
http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/
You can probably look for iBooks for sale in your area and see what they are going for. That will be a good indication of how much or little you should spend to get yours going again.
Do you happen to have access to an Apple Store? If so, you might be able to take it in and get an opinion as to what is wrong with it. I think they would have discs or a store feed that they could boot it from, and they should be able to do this at no cost to you.
Good luck!

  • Lost original boot disc for ibook, and forgot password, help

I have an older ibook from 2003 and i lost the software that came with it for loading mac osx. I forgot the password cause i havent used it in over a year and now i am wondering if i can reset the passwords with the cd from my new powerbook i bought earlier this year. If not, how do i get back on this computer, do i have to find someone with the same ibook boot cd and use theirs to reset my system???

I'm pretty sure the PowerBook disc will work. Just insert it, restart the computer, and press and hold the "c" key before the startup chime, and until you see the grey apple. Once the installer opens, go up to the installer menu (next to the blue apple) and choose the option to reset your password.

Photos/videos in the Camera Roll are not synced. Photos/videos in the Camera Roll are not touched with the iTunes sync process. Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can be imported by your computer which is not handled by iTunes. Most importing software includes an option to delete the photos/videos from the Camera Roll after the import process is complete. If is my understanding that some Windows import software supports importing photos from the Camera Roll, but not videos. Regardless, the import software should not delete the photos/videos from the Camera Roll unless you set the app to do so.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll are included with your iPhone's backup. If you synced your iPhone with iTunes before the videos on the Camera Roll went missing and you haven't synced your iPhone with iTunes since they went missing, you can try restoring the iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup. Don't sync the iPhone with iTunes again and decline the prompt to update the iPhone's backup after selecting Restore.

  • The computer I originally started using iTunes on a few years ago is no longer functional. How do I make the same library appear on my new computer with the newest iTunes?

The computer I originally started using iTunes on a few years ago is no longer usable, but for some reason some of the songs I have now are not showing up in my library on the new laptop I just bought. How do I consolidate the total songs on my iPhone to include them all in a new library on my iTunes in this new laptop? And why isn't this new laptop letting me update to ios 6 without deleting everything on my phone?

Your music will ONLY be where you put it.
It will not magically appear anywhere.
You buy one and only one download.  it is your responsibility to move/copy/backup your music.
You need to copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

Locating lost original files. I can no longer listen to several songs I purchased. I get a message that the "original file cannot be located." What to do?
    Thank you,
    Hunter

If the upgrade to Vista somehow erased the files, you'll need to restore them from your backup or, if a feature of the country you're in, download the content again from the iTunes Store. See:

  • I have a Macbook 2,1 and want to wipe it clean so as I can give it away.  I do not have any original start up disks and wondered how I can do this?

I have a Macbook 2,1 and want to wipe it clean so as I can give it away.  I do not have any original start up disks and wondered how I can do this?

If your Mac is running 10.6 like your signature says, then the 10.6.3 upgrade disks will work as they contain the full 10.6, you need to hold the option key down to select the disk to boot from.
Once booted from the disk, Disk Utility is there to wipe the drive (use the Security Option > Zero) and then reinstall O S X 10.6.3 and then reboot, press the power button down to hard shutdown and the machine will stay like that to boot into the Welcome to Mac video for the next owner to setup.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
How do I securely delete data from the machine?

  • I am trying to edit a project originally started on another computer, by someone else and saved onto an external h-drive, but keep getting 'general error 48' when I try to render it to work further. Can anyone help?

I am trying to edit a project originally started on another computer, by someone else and saved onto an external h-drive, but keep getting 'general error 48' when I try to render it to work further. Can anyone help?

Is this problem only occurring with the project you copied from an external drive, or with any FCP project?
For example, if you were to create a new project, do you still have this problem?
In FCP, if you go to the menu FInal Cut Pro > System Settings and look at the Scratch Disks Tab, is it set where you expect it to be? Have you tried switching the scratch disk to a different disk?

  • Lost original assets to previously burned project, any workaround?

I lost the original assets (images) for a slideshow gallery that was on a DVD I already made in Encore. I wrongly thought that somehow it wouldn't need access to the original assets after doing the encode, that it somehow encoded everything into its own folders and files.
I DO see a .png image that correlates to each lost original asset within the Cache folder for the project, can I use that to recreate the project? Any workaround if the original files are missing?  Or do I need them at all, will it work with broken links to the missing image files?
Right now, I'm in the process of re-connecting it to the timeline (which I'd also lost and thought it didn't need but I found it and I guess it needs it because I did it as an import timeline) so I'm not sure if the galleries would work anyway.
Speaking of which. what is the better way once a DVD has been successfully made to keep it for future burns WITHOUT needing access to any of the original assets?
    Thanks!

Besides Stan's good advice, I would ask what type of re-editing you need to do. You CAN copy the .vob files from the DVD to your hard drive, then open those .vob files in Premiere to re-edit and then encode for DVD again. Of course, there will be quality loss with re-encoding the material again and maybe the video is fine and you only need to modify some menus in the DVD? If the latter, free software such as "MPEG Streamclip" can actually pull an .m2v video file and audio off your DVD, then just pop those assets right into Encore and make new menus again, should be no loss of video quality as it is not being transcoded.
The "Image" that Stan mentioned is an .ISO file, save that and use any DVD burning app to burn a disc from image later (BurnAware, ImgBurn, etc). On Windows 7, I can actually just double-click an .ISO in Explorer and the Windows Burning app opens right up.

  • I've forgotten my Administrator Password. When researching, it generally tells me I need to reboot my account with the original start-up disk. Is there a way to go about resetting your password without the disk?

Please if anyone can be of help whom knows how to reset your adminsistrator password without your original start-up disk, I would really appreciate it! Thanks

Try the method as mentioned by " Ds Store " in the below User Tip. You will have to boot your Mac in Single User Mode where you can reset the Password using Terminal Command and without the Snow Leopard Disc.
