Lost OSX 2.8

When I Held down the commandoption+PR keys to attempt to restore a sytem problem of not shutting down, I lost the OS X system. I am back to the 8.6 system from the G3 disk included with the computer.
I bought the computer used last year and it was already loaded with the OS X system but no disk was included. My question is how do I retrieve my OS X?

thank you, that did the trick! However, I still cannot shut down my computer since I have reconnected to the internet via cable broadband.

  • Lost OSX partition.

Okay so i had a Windows and OSX partition on my MBP. well today i got windows i tried to install it useing Bootcamp. Well when it got to the section where it asks me to choose where i want to install windows there was only one partition. So i exited out and restarted my macbook and OSX is completely gone. When i hold option when i reboot it only shows the Windows partition and nothing else.....
Has this happen to anyone before? And can i get my files back or am i screwed.
Now i know why we have time machine.....

no i dont even have it set up, i was just saying how now i know why apple invited it.
i just decided to reinstall my OSX and i lost all my pictures and music. Now i have all my music on my iphone and is there a program to pull them off? Like how senuti, i tried it with the iphone and it wont work but it works with my ipod

  • When I boot up my iMac and hold down ALT it boots straight into windows 7 without giving me the option to boot OSX back up. Have I lost OSX and all my files completely? Please help

I set up boot camp for my iMac with windows 7. All was fine and it gave me the option to boot into windows.. I then used windows for a few hours and shut down the mac to boot back onto OSX when I was done.. This time my mac booted straight to windows 7 even with me holding down the ALT key it gave me no choice.
I'm assuming the boot camp set up was wrong somewhere but is there a way to get back on to OSX now?? Please help

    1. Have you tried both Alt keys - maybe your Alt key is dead.
    2. Do you have wireless keyboard? Have you tried to change batteries? USB Keyboard?
    3. If your Win is installed correctly then you have also installed all windows support software.
There should be Startup manager like on the Mac (next to the clock little bootcamp app or in control pannel) to restart your Mac into the Mac partition.

  • Formulas lost, OSX.7.5 to iOS.6.1.3

I created a spreadsheet in Numbers ('09, v2.53 build 554) on my desktop that contains a popup and a bunch of formulas and tables. I intended to put it on my iPad for reference "on the go".
Frustratingly, when I copy it to my ipad via iTunes or email all the formulas are lost and all I have is text. If I try to upload it to iCloud I am told that it is an invalid format.
I am open to suggestions as to how to resolve this bugaboo. I was able to create a functional spreadsheet (with formulas and everything) on my ipad and transfer it to my desktop with no issues. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Marty

Left out a question: How on earth do I paste a formula?
One of my attempted solutions was to copy the formulas to text boxes so I could open the file on the iPod and paste the formulas where they should be. That does not work because Apple does not seem to allow formulas to be pasted.
    This is frustrating.

  • USB Hard Drive corrupted - twice!

ever since my recent (and otherwise very happy) transition to macs i've had trouble with an external USB hard drive which i use to store my music collection and back up. first there were issues with not recognising the drive for ages but these were fixed by a new case and then, more recently my drive has been corrupted - twice.
first time i immediately assumed it was because the drive was two years old and had travelled quite a bit with me so i replaced it with a brand new spanking one. however, two weeks later the exact same problem occurred. all data lost. osx recognises that the drive is there, and it's name but the folder structure is gone and replaced by some garbled charachters that start 'USB£@$@%£$%' or similar.
first time this occurred i was in the middle of some file transfers and the drive itself started making a few strange noises. second time was during the nightly back up i have running with superduper! at the same time as downloading stuff. i have the drive partitioned - 100GB osx extended format for the back up and 200GB fat32 for my music colleection. in the recent manifestation it doesn't mount the back up partition, but mounts the music one. i can see the back up partition in disk utility greyed out and it agrees that there is a fault, but it can't find any problems with my music partition - which now has no data on it.
i am completely at a loss here and my last few hour's research on the net have yeilded no results so if anyone can help i'd be very very grateful. i connect the drive through usb hub and to the left usb port if that makes a difference. i had absolutely no problems with a similar set up on my windows laptop for years. is it something to do with how os x handles external drives? or should i get a new case/usb 2.0 hub? all tips appreciated

i do use unmount - but what if finder crashes in the middle of an operation, which may have been what happened first time, and even the second time (but i wasn't around to see what happened), would that garble the folder structure entirely?
i live in the heart of a big city in the UK in a (relatively) modern building and haven't seen any power failures at all (resent alarm clocks etc) or are you talking about some level of super-quick fluctuation i've never noticed before? or did you mean something internal to the drive casing or something?
no error messages related to the usb hub so far. all other devices connected though it work just fine - ipod, printer etc.
the first drive was a hitachi, the second a western digital. the casing was bought from maplin and seems pretty generic - though both problems have occurred since i got the new casing which was about a month before i got my MBP.
it's a serial drive and i have no idea about the jumpers. first time i put everything together, but the second time the drive failed, i bought the replacement drive from the IT guys who were doing the data recovery (which didn't work) and they put it all together for me.
this doesn't have a fan, which the old one did, though it does have a metal casing - do you think heat build up after prolonged heavy use could cause problems?

  • Safari Locks up while loading, cannot install updates or new beta

When booting up Safari, it would get as far as loading up the first viewing window before becoming completely unresponsive. After several restarts, I decided to trash the app and download the most current version of Safari from apple.com. Yet the installer kept saying that my hard drive doesn't meet the requirements to install the .pkg file.
The only thing I could think of doing was trashing some of Safari's preference file, but I couldn't find any via Spotlight. Can anyone help me solve this without resorting to re-installing OSX Tiger? I am currently looking for my lost OSX disc in case that is my only option to resolving this matter.
    P.S.
Today I tried installing the Safari 3 beta, yet it gave me the same error when trying to install.

My advice would be to just reinstall Safari— you don't have to reinstall the entire OS. This is what I did after the Safari 3 beta gave me the same message about my hard drive in the Installer, and then screwed up Safari 2.
Pop in your OS X install DVD and click on 'Optional Installs.' Once you get to Installation Type in the process, select Safari and only Safari. They tell you to back up your essential files even when doing just a one app install like this (and it's probably still a good idea) but I didn't have any problems.

  • Backup DVD failure

I'm unable to read, write, erase or mount some backup DVD's I made using Retrospect express 5.0. At the time, I was using OSX 10.2.
From their support website, I understand that this version of Retrospect lost OSX compatibility when OSX went to 10.4. However, I would like at least to reclaim the DVD-RW's.
Although I've been using my superdrive fairly regularly with other DVD-RW's, the ones holding backup info by Retrospect seem to be effectively destroyed, and the backups are useless. The Retrospect app does not detect them, possibly due to the compatibility issue, but there is no way to know if this is the cause.
Some of the backups do not mount, and others mount in the finder as "blank CD", but one that has no capacity. The finder reports insufficient space when I try to burn even a small text file to it.
Disc Utility fails when asked to erase these discs (I/O error.) Is there any way to make the discs usable again? Apparently restoring anything from these backups is out of the question, but I'd at least like to get the discs back.

I have an external firewire drive that I use for recent backups
What is the storage capacity of your external FW HDD? Is it paratitioned? How many partitions? How much data do you have on it?
Perhaps one day I'll wipe it and lay on OS X.
What I would do is to backup everything you want saved, reformat, partition and zero the HDD, then clone your internal HDD to one partition using SuperDuper, which will make a bootable clone of your HDD on the partition. If you are interested in doing this I can give you detailed directions for setting the HDD up.
Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery has suggestions on partitioning and backing up. However, he insists on using Retrospect, which I have found to be clumsy, unintuitive and invasive, and which you have experienced in a not very positive way. I use SuperDuper for everything.
Can I boot from a firewire disc with a successful OS X install?
Once you have created a bootable clone of your HDD, you can boot from it and it will be exactly what you have on the internal, at least what was there when you last updated.
    Good luck.

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee

  • I've just followed the onscreen prompts to download Firefox 4 & it's not supported by my version of OSX, so now I've lost my old Firefox 3.6 & can't figure out how to get it back! Help!!!!

I'm using a MacBook, with Mac OS x version 10.4.11
All I did was open Firefox, & it prompted me to download Firefox 4.
So I followed the directions & now Firefox won't run with this version of OSX & I have no Firefox! I want to cry! All my Bookmarks.............Help please! Have I lost everything?? Is there a way to get my old Firefox back?

You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
When you install Firefox 3.6 it will use your existing bookmarks and other user data.
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com

I hope they still got it on sale!
As far as I know, Apple Stores do not sell machine specific system discs.
Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.
Since you are not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html

You can get Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

Your profile says you have 10.6, so why bother with the original 10.5 OS?
But to your question, before you erase anything, make a backup of your data for safe keeping and restoration. Having an external hard drive for this purpose is most useful.

  • Lost use of word for mac 2004 when upgraded to mountain lion OSX

IVe just upgraded to Mountain Lion OSX and lost use of word for Mac 2004. how can i get in to work again

Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)
