Lost Pages document

My saved document is lost.
I've saved .pages document to the desktop a couple of times, but when I tried to save it for the last time, I got "document could not be reverted" and my document was just gone. Now I can't find it in Pages' "recent files", or in Spotlight, or even in iCloud. There's no any version of this file. This is ridiculous, I just can't believe it. Can I get my document back?
Pages, Mac OS X (10.9)
How I find a lost document

Your OS is less relevant than your version of Pages.
Where were you saving it to? iCloud? Anywhere else?
Are you saying it disappeared on screen, it closed without saving?

  • Can I recover a lost Pages document on my iMac?

I lost a document that was never saved. Is there any way to get it back?
I'm using my iMac (Mac OS X Version 10.6.8) and Pages (Version 4.1 (923))

You are not even covered with Lion if you have never saved.
That's the equivalent of having a brilliant idea but never putting it down on paper. Except your brain, unlike the computer, doesn't necessarily forget if you go on to doing something different.

  • I need to retrieve a lost Pages Document in iCloud

Yesterday I was lokking for a password in my Pages "passwords" document.
    Suddenly the document disappeared.
I can't find it; it is completely lost.
    I don't have a back-up.
Looking for information, it looks as if nobody ever had this problem.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If you don't have it and you don't have a back up, there isn't a lot you can do unfortunately. However you might look at iCloud.com on a computer as a last check.

  • Lost Pages Document when Computer Turned off---Can it be retrieved?

any chance documents that i'm working on in pages & haven't saved can be retrieved if the computer is turned off?
was working on something all day, left, came back to continue, but computer somehow had turned off and I can't find it.
is there a place that "drafts" in pages are saved? or documents in pages that have never been saved?
thanks for any help you can give me!

There is also an AppleScript able to autosave iWork's documents.
Not only it saves the doc in the native format but it saves a time stamped zip archive allowing us to recover file if the HD crash.
File recovery tools are unable to recover iWork's native documents but they are able to recover zip archives.

    Download
    foriWork:autoSaveiWork.zip
    Expand it,
    double click on "autosave&zip4iWork.applescript"
Read the given explanations and apply them.

  • Any way to recover Pages documents on disabled, never-synced iPad Mini or connect it to network so Lost message will appear?

    Hi,
Apologies for the long post. For my three questions, please skip to the bold copy below. The first couple paragraphs are preamble.
Yesterday I unwittingly--and dimwittedly--disabled my 2012 iPad Mini by entering my password too many times. (Or rather my coat pocket and Bluetooth keyboard did it as I walked all over town, unaware of what they were up to. The activated keyboard in one pocket continually woke the sleeping iPad in my other pocket, the iPad kept demanding a password, and in the jostling I must have entered password after password. Finally it disabled because I'd set it to do so. I didn't know it was permanent though. I thought it would ask me to try again in a few hours. My oversight.)
I'm desperate to get my Pages documents off the iPad, which I've never backed up on iCloud or synced with iTunes. (My Macbook went belly up in July and I couldn't afford both a new computer and the more portable iPad--so I just bought the iPad and the Pages app.) Until December I was emailing myself the Pages manuscripts I was working on, but a few weeks ago I got lazy about this, and now I've lost a month's worth of work. I couldn't be madder at myself.
The Genius Bar gave me only the Erase/Restore option, which I can't bring myself to do. So I tried a couple third-party apps (Dr. Fone and Phone Unlocker) on my office iMac. But both require me to tell the iPad to "Trust this Mac" when the iPad shows the prompt--which the iPad doesn't do because it's completely disabled. The only words that ever appear onscreen are "iPad is disabled" and "Connect to iTunes."
So I'm scouring my brain for solutions:
    1) Is there any hope of re-enabling the iPad while preserving the data, maybe by starting a restore process in iTunes and aborting before data is erased? Then maybe the password field will show up again and I can type in the correct one?
    2) Or, even better, is there a way to connect the iPad to a network via the Lightning connector or even by taking it apart and hooking it up to something or other? (WiFi was on when I last used the iPad, though I don't have a cellular plan.) I ask because if I can get it online, then it will get the Lost iPad message I sent via Find My iPhone (in iCloud), and presumably the password field will show up on the iPad (along with my phone number), allowing me to enter the password once I've marked it as Found. But the iPad will only receive my message to it if it's connected to a network--which it can't do while disabled.
    3) Is there any chance that in the next few months or years someone will figure out a solution (maybe a better recovery software) that will let me access my documents again? I just can't delete them, even if it means putting it in a drawer and saving up for a new iPad.
Many, many thanks for any suggestions, no matter how outlandish. I'm desperate!

    Hi Brian
I had the same exact thing happen to me - except it was my wireless keyboard that disabled my ipad.  I also have documents on Pages that I did not want t to lose.  This worked for me!  Found it on another help site....I was able reactivate my ipad - nothing lost - all is good!
    1. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    2. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    3. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    4. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    5. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    6. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    7. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

  • Is there a format for a file that I can use for attaching a one page document with photos embedded that will open in everyone's email automatically?   I've tried PDF and Word, but worked only in Mail.  Lost formatting when just copied and pasted in email.

Is there a format for a file that I can use for attaching a one page document with photos embedded that will open in everyone's email automatically?   I've tried PDF and Word, but PDF worked only in Mail.  Word worked in nothing.  I also tried copying and pasting the document but lost all formatting when just copied and pasted in email.  Is there a way to do this?

Are you sure PDF won't work? It should as what you're trying to do is pretty much what it is designed for (PDF - Portable Document Format). On a Mac anywone who receives the file should be able to see it in all its page layout glory by using the app Preview or Adobe Reader. Same on a PC, the file should be viewable as a PDF file using Adobe Reader and probably some other viewer (don't use PCs so not sure what other apps).
What application are you creating the file in and are you sure you're exporting it correctly in PDF format, fonts and images embedded?

  • Ipad2 Reset itself. Have I lost my documents in Pages?

I checked the battery level on my iPad2 this morning before putting it in my bag. 4 hours later when I took it out, it had reset itself. Is there anyway I can get my Pages documents back that have been created since I last backed up to my PC?

Thank you, but after an hour with apple support on the phone we came to the conclusion that the documents are lost... So the lesson is, don't trust icloud as a back up solution! A month worth of work down the drain...

  • Lost information in sectioned pages document

    Hi!
I've been using Macs for years and love them best. Here's my problem.
I'm completing a lengthy document. Within that document, I've been adding sections and many pages include graphics (graphics are sometimes as simple as lines from within the program). I'm not using any templates, it's all of my own creation. I've found some glitches now that I am up to over 40 pages. The document is losing a page here and there, or more than one page (I don't think it's always even an entire 'section'). What's lost is not always even right next to my work. If it loses two consecutive pages, one blank page may show.
Sometimes I've seen a long, pale blue line with a box (page symbol??) on the page that is now blank. I've clicked on that, control and command clicked on it thinking it was something that would recover that portion (or show the portion that may now be hidden). None of my ideas seem to work to recover the lost work.
I've checked around the forums, all that seemed to come up were lost complete documents.  I'm close to finishing and am feeling frustrated at having to go back and rebuild parts of the document.
    HELP Please!
    Thanks so much!

Sorry! Forgot to include that it's "Pages '09", version 4.3.
    Thanks again for any help.

  • Lost iCloud Pages Document because of xml index missing- finally resolved!

This morning I opened a Pages document in the cloud and started making changes to it the same as I have a hundred times in the past.  The dreaded spinning ball appeared and I force quit Pages.  Upon trying to open the same document I got the dreaded "xml index is missing".  I callled tech support and was told by the first person that there is no way to recover the document.  I also asked if Time Machine would have backed it up and he said NO, there is no way of recovering it if I didn't make a copy of it.  I called Apple Support again and this time talked to a lady who at least tried to help me, but we weren't making any progress.  I then found an article online (after searching earlier for the xml issue) that said Time Machine DOES backup Mobile Documents under the ~Library/Mobile Documents unless you specifically tell it not to.  Luckily this person insisted that it backs up mobile documents because I was able to recover the document from a Time Machine backup.  Thank you to the person who posted about the Time Machine backup!  Now Apple needs to let their Tech Support people know about this!

    Hank,
You were wise to search for answers here. There's no doubt that there is more collective wisdom in these discussions than you would expect to encounter in one first-echelon phone support person. You are also wise to be using TimeMachine so you have that recovery option available to you.

  • Lost my pages document, can I recover it anywhere?

              Hello,
    the history of it:
I had a situation with the apple software "aperture" where rendering out a large slideshow to video to external drive actually used up the remaining 50 gigs of hard drive space on my local drive within the laptop. as a result "disk utility" showed 0 disc space left. resulting in me not being able to save my "pages" document before I closed it. (amongst other problems).
I had spent over a year writing this pages document as a journal every other day. (no backups). I had really ended up trusting my mac because of its robust performance this last 2 years >.<
I had pressed "discard or close" something like that from memory when trying to close it before shutting down my computer due to zero disc space left. but that should have only got rid of the days writing correct ?? / not deleted the whole document... !!
I had deleted the trash after logging back in to try and free up disc space (not realizing that perhaps, the pages document had been moved there).
Is there anywhere I can retrieve this document its gone !.  (I have managed to get some disc space back but cannot find the document).

    Hi john,
It depends. What OS are you running? What application? How/why did the Mac shut down? Have you restarted and looked for recent documents?

  • Pages document "could not be read" bc. it "does not have a valid format"

The document in question was properly saved and Pages was not open when my computer hung as it was shutting down. MS Word would not quit or force-quit and I had to hard restart the computer. When I later tried to open this Pages document, which I had been working on before Word froze, Page would not open it and responded with the error message: "This document "document_name.pages" could not be read. This document does not have a valid format." When I looked at the document in question I noticed that its file size was 0KB. I have no idea why this happened, but I suppose it has to do with my computer not shutting down properly and perhaps with Word freezing. If I repair my drive permission, re-index it, anything, will it help? Just a note on the status of this machine: spotlight stopped working earlier this morning and I was waiting to finish this document before repairing disk permissions and trying to fix that issue with Spotlight.
In the meantime I have tried various fixes. First I tried to change the file ending to .zip, unpack it and open it. Then the same, but this time I tried to view package contents. It doesn't show up in the contextual menu as even having a package to show the contents of. The file is effectively empty, but I don't know where the contents went! The funny thing is that the MS Word doc was recovered automatically. Is it possible that Pages doesn't have an auto-recovery mechanism?
I need this file urgently, or at least the text in it. It is the bibliography of an important paper due tomorrow at 5 pm.Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, I have used a file-recovery program in the past. It is called "Stellar Phoenix" and it worked wonderfully to find a Word doc that I accidentally deleted. It can't find .pages document though. In order to do so, I would need to tell the program what the average file size is, as well as the header information as follows. "Header (in hexadecimal)" "At Offset (in decimal)". I have no idea what this means, but if I could insert it, perhaps it could find the lost data. Should I have it search for .pages, .zip, .xml? I'm at a loss, but I know that it doesn't recognize .pages. In the meantime, I sent a support email to them and will see what happens.
    Thank you for your help.
    David

    I can't respond before.
When the system say that your file size is 0KB, it means that nothing was saved. Only a file descripto exists.
So, there is nothing to recover.
Given the time the system crashed, you may have :
    (1) a simple descriptor with nothing written
    (2) a folder with every or only some of the required files.
In this case, Phoenix is useless : it's unable to revive a folder.
    (3) a flatfile (a compressed version of the folder named above). It's only this kind of file which Phoenix may revive.
With a bit of luck, Phoenix would be able to revive the index.xml file which was in the original folder created in the temporary folder.
    This file starts with :
    <?xml version="1.0"?><sl:document xmlns:sfa="http://developer.apple.com/namespaces/sfa"
    or
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <sl:document xmlns:sfa="http://developer.apple.com/namespaces/sfa"
The minimal size for a Pages index.xml file is : 520038 bytes.
If you retrieve the index.xml file, we may try to rebuild an usable package.
Ask the recovery tool to transfer the recovered file on an other media.
If the document embedded pictures, the index will give their path and their size which may be useful to recover them.

  • How do i upload Pages documents and folders to iCloud and make sure they sync on all my devices?

    Hi,
I'm new to iCloud and don't really know how to use it yet.  I have a desktop Mac, a Macbook Pro laptop and an iPad.  Currently all my Pages documents are on my desktop computer.  I would like to upload them to iCloud and then have it set so that they automatically sync and I can access them on all my devices.  I want to make sure I always have the most up to date version of a document when I open it on any device, without having to update manually.  Can anyone tell me please how I do this?  Can I keep them in folders (there are a lot of documents!).
Also, because I just upgraded Pages and was previously using Pages 09 it keeps asking me each time I open a document if I want to upgrade it to the current Pages.  Can I somehow set this as default now so I won't keep having to say yes?
    Thanks for any help!

To use icloud,  enable it (using the same Apple ID) on all your devices. If you move a document that already exists to iCloud, it will automatically be available to all your devices. Ditto on new doc: if you save it to icloud when you name it, it will automatically be available to all your devices.  If you make a change on one device, you'll be prompted on other devices to pick the one you want to keep,
One BIG proviso: pages 5.1, and Pages for icloud,  are VERY BUGGY. Users here complain of corrupted files, lost data, the program hanging, etc. DO NOT user them for anything you care about.
Also, Pages 5.1, as exhaustively documented here, is a pale shadow of Pages 4.3. Nearly a hundred features present in 4.3 are not present in Pages 5.1, including such basic things as mail merge, bookmarks, meaningful Applescript and Services support. You cannot even set the default zoom, reliably export documents with links to a PDF, or view comments while editing (nor can you print comments).  It is useless for page layout since you can no longer view a page spread, nor set alernating left/right margins and headers and footers.  A lot of advance typographical support has gone missing, too. Non contgious text selection? Gone. How many pages in your document?  You have to dig down in the little "word count" bubble (after turning it on) to find out. Why?  As an early review put it, Pages 5 is an "unmitigated disaster."
To stop being promted to update, go to system preferences and uncheck "automatically check for updates."

  • How do I save a pages document as a pdf to iPhoto?

I recently purcahsed a new imac and have upgraded to Mountain Lion.  Under my old system: Leopard, in Pages 07, I was able to complete a document and then save it as a .pdf to iphoto.  When I upgraded to Lion, I lost this capability.  It was my understanding with the upgraded system (Mountian Lion and Pages 09) that I would once again have this feature but I don't see that option now.  Does anyone know how I can get a Pages document saved into iphoto?
    Thanks in advance:)

Pages does not export to .png. You can export as a PDF then open the PDF in Preview & export as .png. A better way would be to select the content you want & copy then switch to Preview & go File > New from Clipboard & save that as a .png. You'll get a better result with the second method.

  • I reloaded my old iWorks 08 to my iMac's new hard drive. With a new Pages document, I can't see the cursor. You can type in text but it is in white only. Any thoughts?

Hi. I lost my iMac's hard drive and had a new one installed. I reloaded my old iWorks 08 software and then transferred my Pages documents from a portable HD to the iMac. The files open but the original text in them (they are journals) are in white against the white background. Plus I can't see any sign of the cursor. I can hi-lite the text and change its colour but never to black. Plus the photos I inserted along side the text are barely visible, as if they had been badly faded.
Any thoughts on this? Many thanks.
    Richard

    Richard,
You must run Software Update and bring your old iWorks 08 to the latest release for compatibility with the current OS.
