Lost parents photos while upgrading OS after a few drinks

Upgrading to OS 10.6.8 erased my parents iPhoto, is there a way to get it back or must I buy it, and lose their memories?

Your question seems to be that you lost "both" the iPhoto App "and" photograph(s). Hopefully, your parents have a backup of their data on a Time Machine or another external hard drive. if so, you should be able to restore both of these items from that source.

I've seen this issue in the past.  I think it is connected to the operating system itself.  I say this because I reinstalled the os using itunes and then restored a backup.  Then garageband started behaving again.  Then the issue came back - after I did an os update.  So I'd try reverting back to a fresh version of the latest os, and then restoring your apps using a backup.
    Hope it helps

  • Lost all photos/albums from library after upgrade to 5.0.2

After auto-updating iPhoto to version 5.0.2, I no longer have any photos or albums in my iPhoto library. Where did they go? I can't even find specific titles using a search of the hard drive. What can I do to get them back?
    -Mike

    Mike,
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
    Do this for each album.
    Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
As to why they don't show up in the source column of iPhoto after the rebuild, I don't know why. Do all your images show up when you open iPhoto?
Is there anything listed in the source column other than "library"?
Here is another post with the same problem.

  • Lost new photos while restoring backup

    Hi,
I recently switched from an iphone 4 to iphone 5. Before changing the phone I had taken a backup on iTunes on my PC (Windows 7). After getting the phone 5, I used it for several days without restoring the backup from iTunes on my PC. I had taken some photos during this time. When I recently connected my phone to the PC, iTunes prompted me if I wanted to restore backup. On clicking 'Yes', I got all my old photos in the new phone but lost all the new ones I had taken. It was so frustrating.. as if you are back to your old phone!!! Are there any ways to recover the new pics?? Please let me know, I really need those new pics!!

Same problem.  My wife lost her iPhone 3Gs while on vacation.  Purchased iPhone 5 on the trip and took pictures with it.  When we got back home I clicked restore from a previous backup and all the pictures disappeared.
I wonder if Apple is reading this thread. ?????????
NO... What did you expect the phone to do when you restore from a backup.
You should've imported the new pics to your computer as you would a digital camera..

  • Lost iPad photos, while downloading to iPhoto.

Hello Apple Community! I have a delicate situation for itunes, iphoto and ipad savies to help.
I downloaded some very dear and important photos (out of many more) from my iPad mini into my MacBook Pro, using iPhoto. When I finished and unplugged (I was careful to eject the device) all my videos and photos were missing on my iPad mini. All of them even the ones that I did not touch. Nevertheless something curious occured: if I use iTunes to browse the iPad mini, even when I do not have any sign of the photos or videos on iTunes, in the data bar down the window or dialog box the entire photos and videos and all other stuff appears as colored bars as if nothing had happened.
The iPad mini works with IOS7 and the MacBookPro with Mavericks 10.9
I am a new iTunes user and I am not used to certain features. next to the color data bar there are two buttons "revert" and "apply". What do they do? (I do not want to screw up)
So can enyone help me recover all my photos and videos please???
    VitoF3D

No, the photos do not appear on the Mac or on the iPad while browsing them through iPhoto.
But curiously, if I open iTunes, when looking at the data bar at de bottom of the dialog it says the whole Photos are there. The bar indicates the presence of the whole 8202 photos in an orange color bar. So why iTunes display such information but iPhoto do not recognize it?
I downloaded some photos first, like 1000 and I wanted to download the rest later. Then I disconnected the device being careful to eject it properly. The computer asked through a dialog if I wanted to erase the photos I just downleaded, and I clicked yes because the whole operaton was indeed to make space to take more photos because the memory was almost full. Yesterday, half an hour from the downloading I realized the whole rest of the pictures were missing. Some videos and just one photograph remain and it seems I lost all reamining photos on the iPad.
iPhoto displays a message "All photos have allready been imported". What do you think is happening?

  • HT4101 Lost all Photos while Using Camera Connection Kit to Nikon D70 -HELP!

After using with my Nikon D70, the photos are not on my camera - says now incompatible file format.  And they cannot be seen on iPad. on iPad there is a gray box that says 'jpeg' in it.  Where are my photos?  Can I get them back?

You can't export any type of files using the camera connection kit.
There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.
    Another option:
Expand your iPad's storage capacity with HyperDrive

  • Will I lose my photos when upgrading iPhoto after updating to Mavericks?

I recently upgraded to Mavericks and can't access iPhoto and need to upgrade. I currently have 9.3 but I did not back up my library. Will I lose my photos when I upgrade?

For this you can simply make a copy on the internal drive if you have space - that is enough for an upgrade - but you must have a large external drive and have a continuing backup system if your photos have any value at all to you  - Time Machine is a good start

  • IPhotos has lost my Photos when upgrading to Yosemite

When I upgraded to Yosemite like many people I have seen on forums there was a issue with upgrading the iPhoto library when upgrading to 9.6.  Finally it looked like it had worked but now all of my photos do not appear in iPhoto.  The files seem to be there still as the iPhoto library file is still1.26TB in size (i have a lot of photos).  I have tried doing a full rebuild of the Library but it did nothing.  I also purchased iPhoto Library Manager but this does not help either.  Please can anyone help?
I am using iPhoto 9.6, OSX 10.10 (Yosemite) on a iMac (27-inch, Late 2013).  The Library is stored on a "My Book Thunderbolt Duo", 8TB in raid 1 configuration.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Lost all photos when "upgrade" Lightroom 5.5.  Any help, encouragement, aspirin would be appreciated?

30 day owner of Lightroom.  Lightroom  only shows the 35 photos of the last Keyword selection made prior to the upgrade

First, thank you for your suggestion.
Information:  Unfortunately, all filters were off.  In "keywords", the number indicated (35) I had "keyworded", probably 1500 images.
Another "twist" just found.  All images just found on the external drive (4TB), where they were originally downloaded, so I have the                     images.
Concern:  recovery of: the keywords, flags and star ratings and edits? (oh I hope there is a way)
    Thank you

  • Lost all photos, contacts, calendar, etc. after ios 6.1 update on iphone 3. Help! How do I get my stuff back?

I was updating in order to get iCloud and Bump so I could transfer my data to my new iphone 5. My old phone was acting like it was a new phone and wanting me to set it up. I had to update itunes on my pc also. My data is not there either. I pulled up icloud, not there! I had a lot of pictures, notes, and contacts that I need. Can I restore them???

Did you fail to sync contacts/calendars with your computer regularly?
Did you fail ot import your pics?
If so, then they are very likely gone.  You can try restoring from backup.

  • My iPhoto library is entirely referenced. When I try to consolidate it to Photos the application crashes after a few seconds. How do I proceed?

My iPhoto library is entirely referenced. When I try to consolidate it into Photos the program crashes a few seconds after I choose "users" in the pull-down. As a result I cannot upload to iCloud. How should I proceed?

Referenced libraries are very problematic and I recommend against them - and having old photos is not an issue in iphoto - you can import old or new photos
In any case it is a personal choice and you have what you have and there is no easy way to change that since iPhoto has no ability to consolidate originals into its library after the fact - only on initial import (Aperture can do it and iPhoto Library manager can if you wanted to go back an change)
As to Photos I understand it is better with referenced libraries but again since eI do not use them I have not investigated this in any depth
It sounds like your Photos library is ready - check the photos count to verify that everything is there

  • I lost my back up files while upgrading my ipod what do i do to find them?

I lost my data while upgrading my ipod touch how do i get it back?

By restoring from backup. For how see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from backup via iTunes the apps have to be in the iTunes library since the apps are not in the backup.

  • Metadata lost while upgrading?

is it possible that metadata can be lost from iphoto while upgrading to leopard? what should I do to make sure I backup the metadata, and how to transfer it to the new version of iphoto into snow leopard? my current version is iphoto'09

what should I do to make sure I backup the metadata, and how to transfer it to the new version of iphoto into snow leopard?
Make a copy of the iPhoto Library on an external drive for safe keeping. Your iPhoto Library is by default in your Pictures folder.
The meta data are stored in the iPhoto Library and you upgrade the library to a newer version, by opening it in iPhoto.
Hold down the options key while you launch iPhoto the first time and select your iPhoto library.

  • Has anybody lost imported photos after upgrading to Lion? (iphoto11)

Has anybody lost imported photos after upgrading to Lion? (iphoto11)

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
