Lost photos in events showing appostrophy

have a problem have an empty square where some events and then photos should be these r random events but a few altogether when i open the photo a circle with a apostrophe appear but no photo does anyone have any suggestions on how to retrieve these

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Lost photos in Events

I lost all photos downloaded in the last 2 events downloaded. These events had the same date, bu they were downloaded on separate days. I still see the events in iPhoto, but none of the images are available. Is there anyway to retieve these images? Unfortunately there are no Time Machine backups done in the time frame of the downloads.

FYI - TM should run all the time and do hourly backups - anything less is not giving you a good backup as you just found
backup, depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and usiong the resulting first aid window rebuild your database

  • Tried to reinstall iPhoto library from external hard drive, it shows that the photos and events are there but there are no thumbnails and if you click on an image or video nothing comes up.

My hard drive crashed recently and we took it to apple to get repaired. The apple employees said that they would have to replace the hard drive but they didn't have the equipment to get the data off my hard drive. So I took it to a computer store who had the right equipment after a month and a half of waiting they finally got all the data off my hard drive and put it on an external hard drive (Seagate Expansion Portable Drive). I then took it back to apple who replaced the hard drive. Now I'm in the process of reinstalling everything. I have never done a Time Machine back up or backed my laptop up to . Which I now will do very often once I've reinstalled everything. I have reinstalled all of my desktop images and folders as well as my iTunes library with no issues. However when i went to reinstall my iPhoto library it came up blank. I then Rebuilt the library several times and this was the result.
It shows that the photos and events are there but there are no thumbnails and if you click on an image or video nothing comes up.
Please help i have three years worth of images from holidays on here and would be devastated if i lost them.

iPhoto cannot find the thumbnails or the original pictures.
Go to your iPhoto Library in the Pictures Folder.
Right-click on it and from the resulting menu, choose 'Show Package Contents'.
This will bring you inside the iPhoto Library package. There you should see a Folder called Masters. Within that, there should be folder containing your actual photos.
    Are they there?

  • My imports are not showing up in Photos or Events

My imports are not showing up in Photos or Events.  The only place I can see them is in the "Last Import" folder.  When I try to re-import them it pops up the Duplicate warning which means they are in the library but not showing up.  Any ideas?

If they are in last import then they should be there - check the date on one of the photos in last import and look for that date in your library - last import, photos and events are simply different ways of viewing the same photos - if they are there in one view they are there in all views - somewhere
Select a pic in Last Import and Right-Click on it. Choose 'Show Event' from the menu. This will bring you to the Event containing the photo.
If the photo is in Last Import, then the photo is in the Library somewhere,  just not where you expect it to be. Usual causes: the date on your camera is wrong, and so the date on the photo is wrong, or the sorting of the Events has changed (View Menu -> Sort Events)

  • I've lost all my events and photos in iPhoto

Recently converted to all things Mac.
I use iphoto to categorise all my photos and events and faces, basically everything. I then use Aperture to create projects and import from my iphoto library the selected photos I want to work with only.
For some reason or another, I cannot tell you how or why it happened, I cannot open aperture anymore cause it tries to open a file only desktop which i think it thinks is a backup file but says " "xxxxxxx.aplibrary" is an iPhoto library and cannot be opened in Aperture". Thing is that I cannot open it on Iphoto either and I lost all my photos in iPhoto. Where can they be stored? There is nothing in the Trash and there isn't a file where photos are kept from what I gather they are stored within the app. If the problem is the app then I need to uninstall it meaning I loose over 2000 photos!?!?!?
Serves me right not to back up on a hard drive.
Anyone understand my dilema and offer a suggestion on how to retirve my photos?

I strongly suggest that you use another application as an external editor for iPhoto. Aperture is not an edior. Like iPhoto it's a Digital Asset Manage - that is, a database. Trying to use it as an extension of iPhoto is adding complexity to your workflow.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Photo's not showing up inside Events

When importing photos from my camera memory card, everything goes smoothly. I choose the new event I want to create and the photos import correctly. Although, when I go to the event in the event screen and "double-click" on the event, no photos show up. On the main event screen it shows that there are photos inside the event. I can play a slide show and everything. But when i double click the event to view the photos individually...no photos.
I do have another account on this computer and everything works fine there.

I choose the new event I want to create and the photos import correctly.
This is confusing since you can not import into an existing event - you import and new events are created according to the way your preferences are set
And photos and events are simply different views of the same photos in the same library so they can not be present in one and not the other - maybe you think they are in an specific event but they are in a newly created event and your sort (view menu ==> sort events) is set so you are not noticing them

  • Event Photo's Not Showing Up

Hi I was just wondering why my Event photos were not showing up in my iPhones photo library. The only thing it list are the Event titles themselves. I remember when there use to be a photo for each event just like in iPhoto. Now the only ones that have photos in front of them are the camera roll and Photo Library it self. Is there any way to resolve this issue. Could this have anything to do with having a Mobile Me account.

One thing that might help out.
If you tap on an event to open it, does any photos show.
One thing you can try is to create a blank album in your iphoto.
Then sync the iphone just to that blank album to clear off any photos that you have synced from the computer.
Then sync a couple of events back to the iphone.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have a Nikon S6300 and when I import into iPhoto the photos don't show up in events or photos only in recent imports

I just purchased a Nikon S6300 camera and when I import into iPhoto the photos don't show up in either photos or events only in recent imports.
I have Snow Leopard on my MacMini.

Control-click one of the photos under the Recent import and select "Show Event" in the contextual menu. Or you can use the View ➙ Sort Events menu in the Events mode to reset the sort order so the new import will be either at the top or bottom of the list.

  • Problem with importing photos to MBP: The new event shows up at the beginning of Events rather than at the end

When I imported photos on my older Mac computers G4 and G5), the new event would show up as the last event in EVENTS. With my new MBP, the new event shows up consistently at the beginning of EVENTS (actually as the second event), and it is a big inconvenience to have to drag it to the end (through some 500 events). How can I change this? Thank you for your help!

If you have the sort set to manual then you must manually sort the events as you choose - there is no "sort manually the way I am thinking" setting - manual is manual - and for what ever reason with the current version of iphoto second from the top is where events start for you to then manually put where you want
BTW - events are a poor choice for organizing photos and extremely inflexible (as you are seeing) - albums and folder are much more powerful and flexible and are the better way to organize photos

  • No new photo imports are showing up in my Events window, though they do appear in the All Photos window.

For a month or two, whenever I import photos from any source into iPhoto, the new event does not appear in the Events window though I can find it in the Photos window. This happened about the same time I upgraded to Lion. I'm running an iMac with the latest version of everything. What can I do to get my events back?

If they are in the Photos Window then they are in Events too. Photos and Events are just two views of the same material.
Select one of the pics in the  iPhoto Window, right click on it and use the 'Show Event' option.
Usual cause: View menu -> Sort Events option has changed.

  • Iphoto events showing with key photo of a palm tree in gray?

iphoto events showing with key photo of a palm tree in gray? Also indicates no photos but there are photos within the event??

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto events show fewer photo's than actually in event

On the event's page, when hovering over the Event Name, the photo count differs from the actual number of photo's in the event.  Also, some events show a palm tree instead of a thumbnail of one of the photo's in the event.

I rebuilt the iphoto database and that solved the probem.

  • I had to restore iPhoto - photos were lost - now many thumbnails show up as same photo. When opened the correct photo is there. It seems to show up as most recent edited photo. Using iPhoto 11. Any advice?

  • Showing only key photo from events within an album using iphoto 11

I'm using iphoto 11 and want to show only the key photos from events in an album. I don't want to see every photo from every event in the album, I only want to view the key photos from each event in the album. When I drag the event into the album every photo from each event is shown in the album.
I do have some events in an album with only the key photo showing but can't get all the events to display this way in the album. Any suggestions?

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
