Lost pictures by dragging them to iphoto - can see the ipmeta

Hi,
I have just tried to drag 4.700 photos from an external harddrive to iphoto.
When 236 pictures was still to be imported the import freezed. The only way I could continue was by saying stop import and not saving the pictures. I removed the usb and hoped that the pictures would not be deleted at the external hard drive, but they did.
I shot down the imac and it started to read the pictures, but I said stop without saving as I at that moment thougt they still would be at the external hard drive.
The situation is now, that I can see the ipmeta, but I cannot see the jpg pictures.
Is there anaway that I can get the pictures again?
I have unfortunately not set up the time machine.
I have tried to see if i could find the jpg files again by shiftaltcmd when i dobble click at Iphoto but without result.
Please help me.
Henning

I removed the usb and hoped that the pictures would not be deleted at the external hard drive, but they did.
iPhoto has no way to delete photos from that HD, so whatever has happened there wasn't done by iPhoto. I would suspect the drive failed, and that caused the freeze in the import.
You can try a file recovery utility on the drive such as File Salvage
The situation is now, that I can see the ipmeta, but I cannot see the jpg pictures.
Where do you see this?

That's not an iPhoto command. Hold down *the command and option (or alt) keys* while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • I can see the thumbnails but when opening up it is all black

I use iPhoto 11. I just downloaded picture content op iPhone. I can see the downloaded pictures in thumbnail format, but when opening up, there is a bog black screen (without exclamation sign). Also other pictures downloaded before from camera SD have the same issue.
Is there somebody who has a solution for this issue ?
    Thanks.

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/ Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help: As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Hundreds of my iPhoto pictures will not be copied and will not show when I double-click on them.  When I do in iPhoto an exclamation surrounded by a triangle appears.  Though I can see the picture in the small tiles below it will not expand.

Hundreds of my iPhoto pictures will not be copied and will not show when I double-click on them.  When I do in iPhoto an exclamation surrounded by a triangle appears.  Though I can see the picture in the small tiles below it will not expand.  I also cannot attach any of these pics into an e-mail or into any other file.  I have already went through all 3 Repair options and when that did not solve it went through a complete Rebuild.  Any Help?!  Any Suggestions on how to fix this?!  I have spent almost 2 days now going through all of the published help.
I have backups going back 6 months - I have not had the real need to check every album before - but - all of my backups also have this same problem.

The triangle with the ! indicates that the connection between the thumbnail and the orginal is missing - this can be caused by many things including database corruption and user action emoving the originals photos on urpose or by accident
If the database is corrupted then rebuilding is the solution - backup and depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild your database  --  if the iPhoto rebuild does not cure the problem then download iPhoto Library manager and use its rebuild command which creates a totally new library leaving the existing one untouched
If you have deleted the photos then you need to start over with a new library and import the photos you have not deleted into it
You can select one of the problem photos and use the reveal original in finder commander (file menu) to see if the original is there - if it is a finder window will open showing it

  • In iphoto I get the mesage "The volume for [picture] cannot be found"  What does this mean?  I can see the pictures

iphoto message is "The volume for this photo cannot be found."  I can see the pictures but cannot move them?

The "volume" is referring to the picture's location, i.e. hard drive, etc. In any case there is an iPhoto forum where those experts are. Post there.

The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.

  • I have iphoto 7, deleted my photos now having problems getting them from iomega (even though I can see the iphoto library there)

I have iphoto 7, deleted my photos (now iphoto has grey boxes where images were).  I've backed up on Iomega, and I can see the iphoto library there.  But how do I get it back on iphoto?  I dragged it into my hard drive, but iphoto still shows grey boxes.
Thanks in advance from this novice!

    There is no iPhoto 7
    there are iPhoto 6 (version 6.x.x), iPhoto '08 (version 7.x.x), iPhoto '09 (version 8.x.x) and iPhoto '11 (version 9.x.x)
Do you have iPhoto '08 - which version?
Do the gray boxes had large "!" in them?
How and why did you delete your photos?
How did you backup to the Iomega drive - Time machine - drag the iPhoto library - other backup program?

BUt ounce I want to open the event to see the pictures in full screen the event title annouces 0 pictures and no pictures are visble anymore to mee. I have checked if the pictures are marked as hidden and this is not the case. What's going wrong. All the other events are visible in a normal way.
The albums with the same pictures into them are visible.
    Thanks for your help,

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
Click to view image full size

  • I have photos on a cd which I'm trying to open .  If I click on them I can see the picture in the preview, but when I double click it doesn't recognise the picture.  They are all in .jpg format.  Tried copying them but it said some data cannot be read.

I have photos on a cd which I'm trying to open .  If I click on them I can see the picture in the preview, but when I double click it doesn't recognise the picture.  They are all in .jpg format.  Tried copying them but it said some data cannot be read.  The files exist but I just can't seem to view them

Select one and hit the Space bar to view it in QuickLook. Use the forward arrow keys to move from file to file.   If the file can't be viewed in the QuickLook mode then the file is damaged and probably can't be copied or moved.
You could try a photo file recovery application like  MediaRECOVER which can scan the memory card and tell you what files, if any, can be recovered before you have to purchase it.

  • I can see the pictures in iPhoto but when I try to open a picture I get a grey box with a big !

I can see the pictures in iPhoto but suddenly this morning when I try to open a picture I get a grey box with a big "!" Please help!

You really should run check for updates. It's up to 9.1.3 now.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

I cannot drag folders onto my 1 tb hard-disk. Do you know why? I can transfer things to my computer but I cannot drag them from my computer to the hard-disk..

You can reformat the drive but that will wipe all the data on it. Move everything to your Mac. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility. If you need both Mac and Windows access, I suggest ExFAT. Then move it all back

  • I have 3,500  photos on my MacBook that I would like to copy to my Windows 7 PC. The PC CAN "see" the MacBook on the wi-fi network but I can't find the picture files through that route on the MacBook.

I took 3500 pictures with an iPhone 5 and a Canon Ixus camera whil on holiday in China. I downloaded them onto my MacBook every day.
Now we're back home I want to back them up onto my Windows 7 PC as it has a 1 TB HDD.
My PC and MacBook can see each other over the wi-fi network (the PC has an Ethernet connection to the wifi router) and the MacBook can copy files from the PC but not vice versa although the PC can "see" the MacBook - just not copy or transfer any files.
Also when I look for the jpegs for my holiday pics I can't find them on the MacBook though they open happily in iPhoto. When I look in my iPhoto library it seems to have (among other things) an XML file as a database but no actual jpegs. There are some jpegs on the MacBook but these are from photos I transferred from the PC before I out the 1TB HDD in.
Where are the actual photos stored and how can I transfer them to the PC over the wifi network?

Selectthem in  iPhoto and export to a desktop folder - see the user tip on exporting for edtails on the options available - from there it has not involvement of iPhoto - what access you have andhow you access the Mac disk is a subject for a differnt forum
Direct access to the contents of the ihoto library - a SQLite database - is not supported

  • I can see the pitcure in my folder but I get an error message when I pull up the picture

I can see the pictures in my iPhoto folders but when I click on them to access, I get an error message.
How can I pull these up?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto 08 is gone...can see the icon but doesn't open. Any suggestions?

I was working on getting my Time Capsule to backup my MacBook and erased everything on there. When I restarted and got the time capsule to work i couldn't open my Iphoto anymore and cannot open any new photos that I download..
If I click on the icon it bounces then stops and nothing happens. When i search my applications folder the iphoto application is not there. When i search the "myname"macbook drive>iPhoto I can see the iphoto app. (doesn't open, crashes immediately), the contents folder (the plug-ins disabled and resources disabled items do not open)
    Any help would be appreciated.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    If that doesn't help:
    Post the Crash Log.
    It's at Home / Library / Logs / Crash-Reporter / iphoto.crash.log
Double click on the file and it will open in the Console. Copy and Paste it in here.
