Lost pictures---cannot find volume

I recently installed Leopard on my IMAC. Did the archive and erase method. More recently I installed an update from Photoshop CS2 to CS4. Now my wife gets "cannot find volume PICTURES" error message and has lost all her pictures. I lost all pictures except those that had been opened or worked up in PS.
Under Finder, left side, the Picture volume seems to be not connected, but if I go to the hard drive Icon, I can find a pictures folder containing some recent additions to the folder. So it seems to be there, but it is not in the finder below Documents.
On my login Pictures works, but most of my photos are gone. Help!
Anybody got hints on how to find the pictures, and re-connect the pictures volume?

Did the archive and erase method.
NO you didn’t. You did either an +Erase and Install+ or an +Archive and Install+. There is no “archive and erase method”.
Now my wife gets "cannot find volume PICTURES"
The Mac is looking for a Volume called Pictures - not a folder, a Volume. A Volume is a disk, a partition of a disk or whatever.
but if I go to the hard drive Icon, I can find a pictures folder containing some recent additions to the folder.
This is the Pictures folder on your on your Start Up Volume.

  • Iphoto error cannot find volume

I am getting this error when importing from my camera. I do have the setting selected in iphoto to automatically copy to library on import. I suspect the problem might be coming from my camera that has rolled over 10,000 pics, so now the file number seems to be starting at 1 again. So on import it says cannot find volume but I wonder if it is getting confused bc the file already exists? I tried renaming the pics before importing, and that seems to work, but, now the old pics that had that file name say cannot find volume. Anyone experienced this? Now question on trying to recover. When I recover from time machine, I am clicking iphoto and recover but it doens't seem to change. Do i have to select the library instead? Also another question. The date I want to recover from I have since done some books, calendars, etc under the 'keepsakes' list. How can I copy those so I can get them back after recover?
    Many thanks.

This sometimes occurs if you’re importing a file into iPhoto and there’s already a file there with the same name. Digital cameras can produce many, many files with the same name over their lifetime, so it’s not uncommon to have several files called IMG_00543.JPG, for instance. Now you want to import one also called this.
What happens is that iPhoto compares the two files to check for duplicates. However, if iPhoto cannot find the file already in the database for comparison, then you get this message. It suggests that your database is damaged because iPhoto has lost track of this (or these) similarly named files.
A simple test is to rename the file you are importing - just add a character - IMG_00543a.JPG for instance. You've already done this test and it proves the hypothesis.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Which volume control are you referring to.

  • Appleworks Cannot find volume

I have an i book (Indigo colour). MAC OS X V10.2.4. and Appleworks 6.0.4. I have not been able to either 'save' or 'save as' a new document in Appleworks since yesterday. It brings up the notice 'cannot find the volume' alongside the Appleworks icon. Hence it won't save any documents. I have been saving successfully in Appleworks for some time. I did try to load a free CD from a magazine yesterday, and it was anti virus scanned, but then I binned it. Would that have affected my system? Anyway, can anyone solve my problem please?

The first thing to try is deleting the AppleWorks preferences. See my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for details.

  • Macbook Pro lost, and cannot find, TC and AEs

Ok - I've never had an issue backing up to the Time Capsule or streaming iTunes to my two Airport Expresses. Out of the blue today, my Airport utility cannot find my TC or my AEs. However, I still have wireless internet access through the Time Capsule. I have no idea what is happening or why? There appears to be many people having this issue but I cannot find a solution. Can anyone help?

One other thing - lights are green on all devices.

  • TM cannot find volume

According to the TM 'Fail' message, during AUTOMATIC backup, TM cannot find the external drive. It is happy to find it if I manually tell TM to do a backup.
The external is a brand new, case sensitive, journaled, 2TB Seagate.

Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Does this happen only when waking from sleep, or powering-up?
If so, it may be a problem with the sleep (or "spin down") feature of the drive -- it's not waking up quickly enough. Try removing the check from the +Put the hard disk(s) to sleep . . .+ box in System Preferences > Energy Saver, temporarily.

  • Drag and Drop not working/MSN display picture cannot find Iphoto

I had the ilife '06 and I was able to drag a photo from (lets say) facebook and drop it into iphoto. I am unable to do this in the ilife '09 version. In addition, when I try to change my display picture in msn i cannot click on iphoto only photobooth is highlighted, please help!!!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I was able to drag a photo from (lets say) facebook and drop it into iphoto. I am unable to do this in the ilife '09 version.
What browser are you using? Safari? If so, right click on the pic and choose 'Add to iPhoto.
In addition, when I try to change my display picture in msn i cannot click on iphoto
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Failure:  Setup/Migration Assistant Cannot Find Volume

I first posted this problem in an e-list. The only replies were manual work-arounds.
I want to move files, applications, user accounts, and settings from my desktop machine to an iBook. I know how to move most of these things the old, manual way by dragging, but it would be neat to use the Assistant.
On my iBook G4/1.33GHz which came with OS X 10.4.2, I reinstalled the OS (Erase and Install). The initial Setup Assistant did not see the "Main Drive" on my QuickSilver G4/733MHz running the retail version of Panther updated to 10.3.9. "Main Drive" is the only volume on an add-on internal Seagate hard drive, and it is the one I want to use for transferring files to the iBook. Setup Assistant saw all three volumes on the original IBM hard drive.
Migration Assistant is no better. I noticed in repeated attempts, that the three IBM volumes show up in the iBook's Finder, but Migration Assistant offers only one of them for selection to use, and not always the same volume each time. Would that be normal?
The iBook's Disk Utility does not see "Main Drive," but it sees the IBM volumes. On the QuickSilver, the Disk Utility in one of the IBM's volumes sees "Main Drive."
With searches using "Setup Assistant" and "Migration Assistant," I can find nothing relevant in scanning over 200 of Apple's support pages. I went through Apple's "Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: Transferring data with Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant FAQ" at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773. The QS is not a server, for the purposes of volume naming conventions at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107316
FIRST: How can I get Migration Assistant to see "Main Drive"?
OK, if there is no easy way to make "Main Drive" reveal itself, I can move files from Home>Documents and I can pick and choose from Applications and Applications Support.
For e-mail, would I move the entire folder at Home>Library>Mail?
What else would I need to move for user accounts and network settings?
    iBook G4, QuickSilver G4, PB G3 Lombard   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   QuickSilver has 10.3.9, Lombard has 9.2.1

I assume that "Main Drive" has a bootable OS on it.
If not, then the Migration Assistant won't see it.
Also, how is the "Main Drive" hooked up? IIRC, it's
through a 3rd party card, it may not work. Does it
show up on the desktop when you mount the QS to the
    iBook in target disk mode?
"Main Drive" is bootable in 10.3.9. It is on the same ATA-4 bus as the IBM drive. But it does not show up on the iBook desktop in TDM.
If it has a bootable OS installed and shows up on the
iBook when hooked up in target disk mode, the first
thing to do is boot the QS with the Panther install
disk, launch Disk Utility, and repair permissions and
repair the "Main Drive." If that passes the repair
cycle, then hook it up to the iBook in TDM, and try
    the Migration Assistant again.
Having just run Disk Utility Repair Disk Permissions from "Main Drive" after installing the Security Update 2006-004 on it, I tried TDM again from the iBook. There was no change.
I always run Repair Disk Permissions from the Disk Utility on the booted hard drive as advised elsewhere so that it is aware of all the Apple updates and third party applications.
Should I still run Repair Disk Permissions from the Panther Install CD? This is safe to do?
    Thanks.

  • Cannot find volume in restore!

I just installed and formated a new 250 GB hard drive in my intel MacBook. I'm trying to restore my system using time machine. I get into disk utility and restore from TM backup from the startup disk. I can select my TM hard drive and which backup date I'd like to restore but when it locates the disk and searches for disk space, it doesn't give me anything to select even after it's done searching for space. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be great! Thanks!

What is the format of the of the newly install HD? It should be in GUID Partition and the volume should be in Mac OS Extended Journaled. When you open the Disk Utility, do you see the newly installed HD and the volume? You can check for the format and the partition in there. Good luck.

  • Zeroing disc failed - cannot find volume macintosh hd

I may have screwed up seriously this time.
I tried to erase/zero my HD from Disc Utility but at 80%, I received message "error in writing zeroes to disc".
Now, when I return to disc utility, my macintosh HD is nowhere to be found - only the disc drive with my tiger install dvd in it. the hd is almost entirely erased, and there is no volume i can select to repair or retry erasing.
Can anyone help with some pointers? I'm afraid no 3rd party software will help, because there is no way to install it...
    Hope to hear from someone!!!!

Hi, and thanx for your input so far!
I've connected my iMac to another one, using the target disk mode. The connection works - but only the Tiger install DVD in my iMac shows up, and NOT the missing hard drive (it's in there alright!!) I can therefore not complete the erasing/zeroing of my HD.
Any further diagnostics I can do without swapping hard drives with another mac? I have an external HD - can this be used somehow to see whether it's the HD or the drive controller that's causing the trouble?

  • Time Machine cannot find internal backup disk.Lost disk image in Finder for internal backup volume.  OS 10.7.3.

Lost disk image in Finder (Desktop) for backup disk on Intel Mac Pro OS 10.7.3. Time Machine cannot find the internal backup disk. The volume is grayed out in Disk Utility, though it CAN verify the volume. How do I get it back on my desktop?

First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.
    Try again to back up.

  • I am locked up in slideshows, a prompt comes up "the volume for (a picture) cannot be found, how do I get out of slideshow,

I am locked up in slideshows in IPhoto, a message comes up "the volume for "some picture" cannot be found, Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and wait for it to appear on the destop, then try again." you can hit find photo, cancel (which it will not let you) or OK which does nothing, I want to delete this slideshow, or at the very least get out of slideshows, how can I do that?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when you try to view the the photos in the slideshow in full size?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • My iPhoto would open with stating the files were damaged. I created a new library, thinking I could just retrieve the old one through the Pictures folder. Now I cannot find the old library.

I fear I may have deleted ALL my photos!!! When opening iPhoto it stated that the photos were damaged. By creating a new photo library, I now cannot find the old photos in the Pictures file. I think I really screwed up!!!

Download and run Find Any File to search for "Library6.iPhoto" on your hard drive. That's a file that is in every iPhoto library. And  Find Any File can search inside packages as areas that Spotlight can not.
See if you find more than one of those files.  If you do then you can find out where that other library is. If there's only one found click on the Desktop to get to the Finder and use the Go ➙ Go to folder... menu option. Enter in the window /Volumes.
When you created the new library did you get this window where you were to either accept the default name that iPhoto presented or rename the new library?
