Lost playlists and tunes

My songs and playlists are all gone. I added to library all the songs back. Seemed to work fine. But my playlists are still gone. Any idea where they went?

You might have had a damaged 'iTunes Library' file.
Look in ./Users/Username/Music/iTunes to see if such a file exists.
Unfortunately these damaged files cannot be repaired.
iTunes tries to restore as much information as possible, but some information is lost.
Your missing 2000 tunes probably still are on your HD.
To add these again to the library, drop the 'iTunes Music' folder (in ./Users/Username/Music/iTunes) on the library window in iTunes.
iTunes will now add the missing songs to the library again.
If all goes well, your library will now list the 6200 songs.
Concerning your iPod. I think it's best to start from scratch.
If your iPod is set to automatically update, connect your iPod and immediately press and hold the Command and Option keys. Hold these keys down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Holding these keys prevents the iPod from auto updating.
Then restore your iPod and set it up the way you want.
Your 'Purchased' playlist will re-appear on your next purchase.
In the meantime you can create a Smart Playlist with the rule:
Kind - contains - protected
This playlist will then list all your purchases.
After the Purchased playlist re-appears, it will only list new purchases. If you want it to contain all purchases, drag the songs from the Smart Playlist to the 'Purchased' playlist.
Or just forget the 'Purchased' playlist and use the 'Smart Playlist' to view your purchases.
Hope this helps.

So it's only music/movies/etc. you have purchased from itunes that is supposedly missing? Where are you "looking" for the music at. What is all my playlists? playlists you have created, or the default playlists itunes comes installed with. Your going to have to be a little more descriptive. What were you doing at the time itunes supposedly lost the music.

  • G4 - IntelMac Mini...Lost playlists and play counts

The Migration Asst. couldn't see the boot partition on my G4 so I had to use Firewire Target mode to get my iTunes library from my G4 to the Mini. However, I lost all my playlists and counts. This should have been easy but it isn't.
    Help appreciated!

Try: On your new MM iTunes Menu File "Import" then choose "iTunes Music Library.xml" on your G4 in ./Users/YourUserName/Music/iTunes

  • Put H.Drive with iTunes onto new computer...lost playlist and ratings

My main computer that had iTunes on it crashed the other day, my motherboard was fried. So I put the hard drive with the iTunes into another computer. The iTune files are not corrupted, but I have lost my playlist and ratings.
Is there a way to recover my old playlist and ratings?

    Yes there may be.
iTunes operates as a database of information for your music files. The actual music files are stored on your PC, not within iTunes. iTunes keeps absolute references of the music file location and other information in its database file. This allows iTunes to use music files from any location on the PC: different directories/folders on the main HD, another internal drive, an external drive, or a network drive (or any combination of the above).
Each song reference has a specific and hardcoded location (both drive letter & path) so iTunes can find and play (or sync) it. Move the file, change the path, re-map the drive it is on, shut down or remove the Drive, and iTunes will lose the file (giving you the '!' of a ‘Broken Link’). Lose, move or corrupt the ‘iTunes Music.itl’ file and your complete Library will ‘vanish’.
If you delete, corrupt, or otherwise lose your ‘iTunes Library.itl’ file, you will end up with a ‘blank’ Library within iTunes. Nine times out of ten, your underlying music files are still on the PC. They can be ‘re-Added’ via the File==>Add Folder/File menu command, but you will lose some of the music meta-data. Recovering your Library via backup copies of the iTunes database file, or from importing the XML file is always preferable.
By your placing the previous C: drive (I'm assuming) into another PC now reading it as the H: drive, iTunes is either looking at a blank Library database file, or reading the old one, but looking for the music on the C: drive where it was before (I'll guess the former).
IF you can put all the music on the C: drive into the exact same path as it was previously
AND you can place a copy of your previous ITL database file into the '..\My Music\iTunes' folder on the C: drive
THEN when you open iTunes, it should restore your complete Library.
Post back if you have questions or if you need to clarify your exact HD situation (I may have misread your meaning...).

  • Lost playlists and artwork

When I opened iTunes today I thought something was strange as it led me through set-up questions. I answered them all thinking this might be due to the newest software version I installed recently.
Then I noticed it was reloading all my music again, all 87 GB which took quite a long time. But when this had finished there were none of my playlists and none of the album artwork I had copied and pasted independently of iTunes.
I see there's some instructions about reloading iTunes again (copy to desktop etc) but I'm a little confused (as I have already reloaded the library as above)and there's no mention of artwork I can find.
I see from the root files I have a folder called iTunes music, another one called album artwork and another one called previous iTunes libraries in which there are 6 different .itl files of which 2 are related to itunes 4 and the other 4 are dated.
    Any help much appreciated
    Thank you

Happened to me thrice in the last month. :-|
I keep all my music in the My Music folder under my user name, so it's not really a big deal, but running set up all over again erases my preferences for playing music videos etc. Really irritating.
Furthermore, the Temporary Playlists under My Music just keep going up and so do the files in the "Old Playlists" folder. I'm not sure I want to play garbage man every few weeks on the folders that iTunes is supposed to be taking care of.

  • Lost playlists (and some music) when I upgraded

I just upgraded to iTunes 7.1. When I finished and launched, all of my playlists and some of my music had disappeared. They are still on my iPod, but I don't know if I can synch from the ipod to iTunes. Please help--I don't want to recreate everything from scratch!

They are still in my music, but like you, I do not want to try and recreate all my playlists. I tried system restore to no avial. Waiting for someone smarter than I!!!

  • Haven't lost song files, but have lost playlists and want to restore!

I store my songs (2300 in total) on a NAS drive. Two days ago, it was necessary for me to detach the NAS drive from my system. When it was re-attached, for some reason it came to life with a name that was a modified version of its prior name. Consequently, when I opened iTunes, although all of the songs in my library were listed, when i clicked on them, iTunes couldn't find them. A dialog box asked if i wanted to navigate to where the song file was located. Itunes no longer knew where to look for the file. I clicked on "Edit" and then "Preferences" and then selected "advanced" to see where iTunes thought the music files were located. The location was identified as the "Music" folder located on my computer's hard drive--not the NAS drive. (In the music folder, I have perhaps 20 songs that are remnants from a bygone day.) Within "advanced", I changing the location from the C drive to the NAS drive and thought that iTunes would then recognize the song files on the NAS. It didn't. I renamed the itl file as "Old Itunes library" with the intent of following a suggestion on the web to modify the song locations in the XML file. I then, for reasons that i can't explain, re-opened iTunes. When I re-opened iTunes, there were no songs at all listed--iTunes was blank. I opened windows explorer and noted that Itunes had created a new itl and XML file. It must have written over the "good" XML file. I didn't think that this would be a problem since I had saved the old itl file which i understand is the file which is really responsible for keeping the library organized.
I clicked on the old itl file thinking that my library would be magically restored, but nothing happened. I then uninstalled itunes and re-installed it, again thinking that it would recognize the presence of my song-library on the NAS drive. It didn't. I know that all of my songs are still on the NAS drive, but I don't know how to restore my playlists.
I have seen advice on how to transfer files from the iPod to the computer, but I don't think that that is what I need. All of my song files are present--they simply aren't being recognized on itunes.
My intuition tells me that the key to all of this is the itl file referenced above. However, I have not been able to do anything with it. Does anyone out there know how to help me out with this?

Do what it told you to do - restore.
You will lose anything that you have failed to backup.
Not backing up everything before any update is a mistake.

  • Itunes 11.1 lost playlists and lost songs

Has anyone else had a problem with the most recent download of itunes 11.1? Since downloading yesterday I've noticed the following two problems: 1. whole playlists are missing and 2. songs within playsists are missing.
Any ideas on how to fix?  Last night I thought I accidentally deleated a playlist so I recreated it with my ipod only for it to be gone again today.

You want to restore the following file then (assuming your media library is in the default location) from time machine:
    /Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.itl
For a guide of how to restore individual files, see here:

  • Lost Playlists and recent iTunes purchases

I just updated my itunes and iphone software as suggested when I opened the application. My recently purchased itunes and all playlists are no longer visible. Please help! THanks

today I had to restore my computer back to a date from last month. I just bought my phone last month also. Well when I restored and fixed a previous unrelated problem, my itunes would not open. It gave me a error about could not open itunes. Something about needing to download it again. Luckily a few weeks ago I backed up all 248 purchases. Well I DL'd itunes 7.7 and no music was there nor my playlists. I synched my phone and it deleted all my songs off the iphone and deleted all my free and paid for apps. I reconnected to sync the phone again and authorize the computer again. Finally got all my apps and songs back and synched on the iphone (and playlists on itunes).

I wanted to move my mp3 music from E:\My Music\Music

    I exported my iTunes Library
    I backup the .itl files
I made Backup copies of the iTunes folders
I than draged all the artist folder from E:\My Music\Music and...
I put them in E:\My Music
I than tried several of the methods found on the net to make iTunes recognise the new location. However nothing has worked.
I would like to get back my playlist, date imported, files rates etc, so if there is anyone who knows what I should do please advise.

  • Lost all my playlists and some music - how to restore?

I'm running itunes on XP and when I booted iTunes today, all my playlists were missing and lots of music.
I don't know of any major crashes or problems with my maching, but the music is gone from iTunes. I went to "mycomputer" and actually found all the tunes, but iTunes cannot find them, and of course, I lost all the playlists. (I've got multiple playlists for each family member and 2 bands in which I play....)
Any ideas on how to restore the playlists and tunes? Why won't iTunes find the music that is actually in the iTunes music folder? I know i could probably drag all the tunes into iTunes again, and then make new playlists but it would take a lot of organizing......grrr
Also, I have almost everything saved on my iPod. Is there some way i can transfer it all back to iTunes from my iPod?
    thank you,

  • "And the beat goes on...." Lost all playlists and 8.0.2 takes away features

Upgrade to 8.0.2 has been a disaster-beware out there. Lost all playlists and have yet to get an answer on how to fix that problem so am just going to create new playlists(could be a good thing).
The latest f...up is that 8.0.2 seems to have taken away the option of creating a "smart shuffle" with songs being played less randomly-used to go to Preferences, Playback, and one of the options was a slider where you could choose how random your shuffle would be. Now there is no slider for that and I keep hearing the same songs constantly in my "random shuffle".
This is one of the reasons people are warned not to ever upgrade your itunes-because Apple ALWAYS takes away features from their customers in their latest upgrades-it's their whole corporate philosophy and mindset. They don't care for their customers-just want to appear "cool" and above everyone else(sometimes called arrogance).
So, is there a way to get the random slider back? Can I "downgrade" my itunes so I can get features that have been stolen from us by Apple?
