Lost print capability on Mac 5 years after install

Yesterday my home office network lost print capability with both my Windows and Mac computers. I was able to re-enter a new IP address for Windows - up and running. I have been trying all tricks I know which aren't many due to the reliability of my AirPort Extreme mushroom router. I was able to print once, one document at a time on my Mac but have to reset the network single IP address each time. What's up?

I have been trying all tricks I know which aren't many +due to the reliability of my AirPort Extreme mushroom router.+
Not sure what you mean by that. What have you tried?
First things first, if your Extreme is 5 years old, the proper forum to ask post is in this one: Airport Extreme (non-802.11n model).
Next, if you're really running OS X 10.4.5 you ought to update it to the latest version of Tiger, which is 10.4.11. I know of no reason not to update.
You might be successful by simply deleting the printer from your printer list and adding it again. I've also found it's best to assign the printer a fixed IP address. If your network suffers a power failure causing your Extreme to reassign IP addresses, your printer won't receive a different one next time it boots. When that happens, it makes the printer hard to find, network-wise.
I've assigned my network printers an address of 10.0.1.100, 10.0.1.101, etc, which leaves plenty of available addresses on that subnet, so consider doing that.

It appears what happened is the installer though it was looking at a empty drive and just went ahead and installed.
I of course am assuming here you didn't use Disk Utility to format the drive first before installing, that would wipe out your files and programs for sure.
So what to do, what to do.
Well there is hope for you as long as the drive wasn't Filevaulted.
I'll explain. When a hard drive writes data for the first time to a drive, it starts at the very top and works it's way down.
When OS X was installed the first time, it was at the top of the drive, unless you upgraded then the upgraded OS X could have been written elsewhere.
Now when you just reinstalled OS X, the new OS went on the top of the drive, overwriting any data that was there previously, so what was there you have lost forever which is about 8GB or so. If it was the previous OS there, then your more in luck because only the old OS X was overwritten.
The remaining space on the drive still can have a copy of your files, provided it's not overwritten yet.
It's because when a hard drive deletes data or reformats, it doesn't remove the data off the drive or overwrites it immediately, it's just made so it's SPACE is available for new files to be written there.
So technically one can recover the deleted data off a non-encrypted/scrubbed hard drive with special software.
The way it does this is it reads the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, and through a lot of figuring out, can tell what that file is and what it belongs too.
So what you will have to do is this:
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
or if you don't have the skills, then take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they can do a direct image of the drive and then you can run Data Rescue on it to rebuild your files.

My Officejet 8000 - Printer says "out of ink even after installing new ink cart. and new print head. I have tried two new cart. and still gives me the error. A few times it will show all inks are full and print a page or two then says it is out of ink. At one point I even was able to clean the heads and align them but same thing occurs. What is wrong??

    Hi Lee_S
Try printing a Self Test Page and see what the Cartridge status & Printhead status is like.

This is a MacBook Pro issue, so you will likely receive a much faster and more informed response if you post in the support area for the MacBook Pro. The link is just below:

  • HT1338 Can't access my mac os side after installing win7

I just installed windows 7 on my new mac using boot camp. I followed all the steps but after installing win7 there is no way I can access my mac os partition. I tried to reboot with the Alt/option key pressed but I am presented with a window asking me to provide a password. When I enter my password, it won't let me in. It just delete the password. I have re-tried several times but it won't work. My question are:
    1. Is there any way I can install windows support software (for the driver) from bootcamp since I cannot access my mac side.
    2. I tried to download and install bootcamp but it doesn't work since it says I do not need to install any bootcamp update.
    3. Is there any ways I can go past the mac password screen? I really don't understand why it doesn't accept my password. I am the only administrator and user of my computer

  • Mac crashes regularly after installing new RAM

My laptop crashes at least once a day ever since installing new RAM. It seems to be triggered by quitting programs, usually Firefox, Logic or Spotify. There was nothing else connected to the Mac that brought about the latest crash but I do use an Mbox 2 on a regular basis.
Below is the last crash report and also the RAM profile. It's Kingston brand if that means anything.

It's almost impossible to trace back the panic report to a specific cause, but it's highly suspicious that you started experiencing problems after installing new RAM.
It's also strange that your RAM has no stated VendorID, Part Number or Serial Number.
I would return this memory poste haste.
Alternatively, if the DIMMs are from Kingston's ValueRAM range, just dump them in the garbage because that's where they belong. While you're there, look for any other RAM that someone else has thrown away - chances are its ValueRAM, too (hint: I have never seen a single ValueRAM DIMM work in any of my systems, so I avoid them like the plague - shame, since Kingston used to have such a good reputation).

  • Lost music file association in win 7 after installing iTunes.

After installing iTunes on my win7 PC my music did not show up in iTunes and now when I go to the music files in windows it shows all the folders empty. I performed windows search on my drive and with some effort can find the music. Please note these files are not in the my music folder, they are in a file in my documents. ( I have a reason for that ).

Ps the above question is how to I put it all back?

  • Mac book pro after install X

After install maverick X my computer is blank ????????

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.

  • Mac stuck restarting after installing Yosemite

My 2011 MBP has been stuck "restarting" for about an hour now after installing Yosemite. The striped loading bar is grey and stationary but the charcoal circle is spinning underneath. Any suggestions? Do I leave it run overnight and call support in the morning? Thankfully this happened after Midterms, but I'm afraid I'll lose everything if I turn it off. (I decided to upgrade on a whim...I know...and the last backup is from the beginning of the summer. :/ )

Same thing happened to me - except, of course, that I made a back-up before installing Yosemite. I could not get my machine to boot - it would get stuck exactly the same way as yours. I tried for hours - and nothing...
I finally wiped my HD and used time machine to install my latest back-up. Without such a back-up, I don't know what options you have. Your best bet is probably this:
Gray, Blue or White screen at boot, w/spinner/progress bar

  • Lost Printing Capability to HP Photosmart 8050

After pouring over the printing forum issues and resolutions, I have yet to find a real solution to regain the ability to print to my HP Photosmart Printer. After completing this 10.5.8 upgrade, Apple has seemly left a lot of us out in the cold with no hat or gloves! I suspect that I will resort to reinstall a previous version of my OS just to get it to work again, but would like to express my disappointment to Apple for not addressing this issue, since its been several WEEKS since its users have expressed their concerns and sought answers to resolve their issues. I can almost guarantee that I will NOT upgrade to snow leopard unless I am provided not only a hat and gloves, but a warm coat and a pair of boots. Thanks to you on the forum for your many attempts to assist us users in our hour of need.

I feel your pain, and today I logged about 5 hours trying every trick or suggestion I found. My HP is a Photosmart 7350, and it actually quit printing back with 10.2, but it wasn't until the last few days that I began digging in. Today, I bounced between HP's site, sourceforge.net, Apple and more. What drove me crazy was that my HP inkjet utility could print (instantly) but none of my attempts with OS X 10.8 and Gutenprint 5.4 were working.
I tried the suggestion (below) from komputerwz66 and downloaded the HP Photosmart printer driver - Macintosh OS X v 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4 (despite the website's notation that it was for these versions only). When I ran the HP setup after downloading, I couldn't even find the 7350 in the list, so I proceeded as if I were using the Photosmart 8000.
    It worked.

  • Lost printing capability

I have an Epson rx 650 multifunction printer. I've used it for many years without a problem. Recently, my MacBook Pro won't print on it. Everything looks like it is working and before the printer actually starts printing, it stops without a message in the printer window.  There is a little "error" in the print utility box. It says Error:/Library/printers/Epson/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpll.app/Contents /MacOS/rastertoescpll failed
I can scan into the computer.  I can print from another computer. My MacBook Pro will print on another printer. I can't actually remember if I used the printer since I updated the system to 10.6.8.
I don't know the next step to fix this problem. Any suggestions?

Go to System Preferences - Print & Fax / Print.
    Select:  Open Print Queue
Delete any print jobs in the list. Quit System Preferences, try printing.

    Diagnostics Information: ℹ️
      Dec 4, 2014, 10:13:56 PM Self test - passed

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Office Pro 8000: Can't Print/Out of Ink Error even after installing new cartridge.

When I tried to use my printer a few days ago, I received a "Can't Print: Out of Ink" error message concerning the magenta cartridge.  I had used the printer a few days before that, and had not received a low ink warning.  It seemed suspicious to me that I would have received an empty cartridge error message without first receiving a low cartridge warning.  The yellow and cyan cartridges read 70% full - all 3 were original cartridges.
I purchased a new 940XL magenta cartridge and installed it per instructions.  Now I am getting a message that the new 940XL cartridge is empty.  I can shake the old 940 cartridge and hear liquid inside.  Obviously, the new cartridge is also full.  I've tried cycling power, reinstalling the software, etc, with no change in status.  If I swap back and forth between the old 940 and new 940XL cartridge, they are properly identified by type on my screen as the 940 or 940XL.  Due to the way the problem has presented itself, I don't believe it is a cartridge issue.
Of course, problem first arouse on May 8th, and my warrantee expired April 26th.  Any suggestions?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I've solved my own problem, which was clearly a factory assembly defect.  I looked inside my printer with a flashlight in the area where the ink cartridges are installed, and found magenta ink sprayed inside the printer.  I disassembled the printer, and found that the magenta line had been damaged during assembly.  There are four ink tubes which exit from behind the ink cartridges, then make a U turn back toward the front of the printer.  Just after the U turn, they make another bend up-wards.  It is at this point that I found the damaged magenta line, directly above a screw on the right-hand side of the ink cartridge housing.  The lines are in a very narrow passage, and are held in place by several keepers molded out of plastic.  It appears that the lines were put in place in the keepers, then the screw inserted from above.  As I said, it is a very tight passage, and it would be very easy to damage the ink line at that point if the lines weren't carefully held back to insert the screw during assembly.
To solve the problem, I removed approximately 1/4 inch of damaged magenta ink line.  I carefully cut the line with a sharp razor, to prevent collapsing the line or causing burrs to the tubing.  I then placed about 3/4" of self-sealing heat shrink tubing over one end of the ink line.  Next I spliced the line with a small piece of stiff plastic tubing from the handle of a cotton swab, which was a perfect, snug fit over the ink line.  Being careful not to collapse the ink tube or cause further damage, I gently twisted the ink line back and forth until the ends were butted up inside the cotton swab splice.  I then positioned the heat-shrink tubing over the splice, and shrunk it with a hair dryer.  The heat-shrink tubing I used has hot-melt glue applied to the inside, which further aided in making a leak-proof splice.  Again, there is not a lot of room, so the splice had to be kept small.
I reassembled the printer, reinstalled the ink cartridges, and powered up the printer.  After the normal, long start-up delay, I printed several full-color test sheets, and all was fine.  The magenta cartridge that I had installed previously now shows that it is full, and the remaining cartridges also read the levels that they had prior to disassembly.

  • Mac keeps restarting after install

Ok my mac has been running really slow for about a year, I've tried all sorts but always getting the scrolling wheel, I'm on mountain lion and installed the original install disc leopard and clicked install, it's now turning itself off over and over again for the past hour  is this normal? I have nothing on there I want to keep it's all backed up, will it reboot soon, cheers

CCould this be the wrong Install Disc for this Mac?
Hold alt key at bootup, what choices does it show?
Oh, do you have Firmware Protection set?
Firmware password protection in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option boot will show a lock, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.

  • Mac Three Beeps after install RAM. Again.

    Greetings
    Introduction
I've seen all discussions on the topic and still decided to create new one in order to collect information.
I've joined the club. Now I also have Macbook Pro, which freezes and beeps three times from time to time.
I often attend to pubic lectures, or give a presentation myself, so this beeping issue is not acceptable for me.
    Description
Problems began when upgraded my RAM to 16GB (two Corsair CMSO8GX3M1A1333C9 modules).
After random period of time (10 minutes - 3 days) my MacBook Pro freezes and beeps three times until I do hard shutdown.
I checked my new RAM (each module separately) with memtest.
One of modules was bad and I changed it from merchant.
    Replaced it. Still beeping
Checked both modules with memetest again (10 runs, each module separately). No errors. Still beeping
    Performed PRAM reset. Still beeping
    Performed SMC reset. Still beeping
Disabled SMS. Everything was fine for 3 days and moment I began feeling happy it beeped.
Ran memtest on both modules simultaneously. Got kernel panic ("kernel trap at ...")
I suspect that problem is not in memory itself (since both modules passed quite intensive tests) but that something brakes when I put two of them together...
Maybe Mac is not able to process them in right way or something...
    Summary
    Mac: MacBookPro Early 2011
    RAM: 16GB, 2 x Corsair CMSO8GX3M1A1333C9
    Status: Periodic beeping and freezing
Didn't help: Switching memory slots, Replacing faulty module, Disabling SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor), Resetting PRAM, Resetting SMC
    Helped: nothing yet
    Main question
Is there any way I can diagnose everything and pinpoint source of the problem?
Since nobody can answer that, I suggest we try empirical approach and just figure out which RAM models work fine.
    Conclusion
I would like to collect success and failure stories:
You upgraded RAM and you have same problem and nothing helps
You upgraded RAM, had this problem and something helped
You upgraded RAM and everything is fine
Please leave your comments in following format
    Mac: your Mac model
    RAM: memory type and model
Status: Still beeps / Fixed / Everything was fine from beginning
Didn't help: List of step you did to fix the problem and failed
Helped: Steps which lead you to fixing the problem
Let's collect enough of such data and we might me able to see the pattern and come up with idea how to avoid The Problem.
    - Ilya

With the link you provided for the Corsair RAM you purchased.
The one you provided in your link is a PC notebook/laptop RAM - see image of your link below:
The one you need for your Macbook Pro has a different part number - see image below:
Best to return and exchange it for the right one so you won't have any issues for your Macbook Pro.
Or you can install Crucial 16GB (i have this in my 2011 13 Inch Macbook Pro) or 16GB Patriot Mac Series (I have this in my 2011 15 Inch Macbook Pro).
Good luck - hope you get it sorted out.
