Lost program icons Microsoft word 2008 and Microsoft excel 2008

Hi I accidently turned Microsoft excel 2008 and microsoft word 2008 into wads of trash that disappeared when I accidnetly clicked the icons and moved them from the dock into the internet box. I talked to one person already but can't seem to get back to them and he suggested that I use MIcrosoft Office 2008 but hte problem is is that I don't have it anymore because I deleted the program from my computer a few days ago (yesterday or the day before) I had originally bought hte program from Best Buy and downloaded it from a disc but I can't find the disc anymore. Do you know what I can do to recover the programs I checked the applications, office (of course, and word and excel 2008 aren't there and they aren't in the trash I checked there too. I thought that it might be on my back-up time machine? And I also couldn't go to undo to change what happened. Thank you.

Things just don't disappear. If you didn't put them in the trash, they must be there somewhere. Click the magnifying glass at the top right side of your screen and search for Microsoft Office and see if you can locate the folder. Also, I'm wondering if you actually installed office or if you were just running it from the downloaded .dmg file? When doing the search, keep an eye open for a Microsoft Office 2008 DMG file.

Easy-these are just aliases. Do a cloverleaf+F/command+F (Find) and they should appear. Either create an alias and drag it to the dock-or there's an "add to Dock" command in the Finder. so click on whichever app you'd like to add to the Dock, then add to Dock and it should appear there. If something isn't in the Dock that doesn't mean it's gone for good. It's just an alias

Connect it to your computer and open iTunes, it will probably prompt you to restore it.

Word processor and/or excel on iPod Touch?

Hello,
I'm in the process of purchasing an iPod Touch, but if I do I intend to use it both as an mp3-player and a PDA (what's the point of having wifi on your mp3-player otherwise, huh?)
In that case, I will need some sort of word-processor and excel-program on it. I normally use Open Office on my laptop.
I'd like to know:
- Are there any applications specifically developed for this?
or
- Do you know of any programs/applications that can be installed and used, even if they're not primarily designed for the iPod Touch?
Of course I intend to jailbreak it first.

Extra info related to this:
I've now found out that online apps (like google docs, for example) can be used for this purpose, with more or less satisfying results. When app store opens there will also be at least a few different programs for connecting to your home computer and possibly using the programs installed on that.
For offline use there are presently apps available (developed for iPhone) that are both limited in useability and take up serious amounts of precious memory. Personally, I think they seem rather crappy.
Until something better comes up through the app store the best choice is probably google docs or similar online services.

Lost icon for Settings, Safari and Email

I have lost the icons for the following, and probably more. Settings, Safari and email.
I have done what might be called a "hard reset" by holding down both buttons at the same time.
I cannot use iTunes to restore, as it will not allow me to do so.
I have looked in every icon that holds a few programs, and the lost icons are not there.
I understand that scrolling will help find the settings icon, because it is there somewhere, but I have scrolled ad nauseum, and it isn't there.
I don't mind wiping it, but don't know how to do it. This is on the original iPad.

I am not sure I can offer any more help. It seems very odd that you can't find the installed icons anywhere. Just to make sure, you did not see anything in the task bar when you swiped through it? Did you have a search page and what happened when you tried to search for 'settings'. When I try that in my ipad, I will get a listing for my settings icon that I can tap and it will take me to settings.

If you mean they're on the dock but have the wrong icon, right click and select "display as folder".
If you mean that they aren't there at all, open a Finder window to your Home folder. Drag the documents folder to the right side of the dock. Do the same with the downloads folder.

Upgraded to 4.5 today and I lost some icons

I upgraded my 8700G to 4.5 today and I removed my IT policy by putting in a blank policy because I just bought this phone yesterday off of ebay.
For some reason I lost my icon of memo pad and tasks and the yellow question mark, where did they do and can I get them back? I really miss that memo pad and I used it all the time!

go to settings > general > restrictions and make sure Restrictions are not on,
Also look in any folders on your ipad to see if it is there.

Yes you can do that by turning off Active Standby.
Goto Settings>GeneralPersonalisation>Standby mode>Standby theme. Set this to basic.

Versions of Word on Windows make a backup file with the extension .abk, if that has been enabled in their options, I do not know whether the Mac versions do, or whether you enabled it but try using Spotlight to search for .abk or just abk.
Where were you trying to save? a network server drive?

Network home folders, collaboration sharepoint and Microsoft Word 2008

I'm hoping someone who knows how Microsoft Word 2008 works on network volumes can shed some light on our situation.
We run a small managed network with about 15 leopard clients and a leopard server. We've got two sharepoints, a "homes" share for network home folders, and an "Office" share with our shared office document folders.
Several times a week, users will encounter a situation where Microsoft Word 2008 will claim that a file is open by another user, or that the file can be opened in "read only" mode, even though the file is not in use. Naturally, the problem cannot be replicated when I am present.
### My Hypothesis ###
My users are in the habit of quickly borrowing machines from other users to pull up documents in the "office" share by using the "connect as" button. So, for example, userA is logged in to her machine (and is thus connected to the network home folder on the server). userB comes along and borrows her machine -- without logging out, will connect to the shared office folder, pull up and edit/print a document, etc. We're not currently auto mounting the office share.
I know that Microsoft Word creates lock folders located in the .TemporaryItems folder at the root level of the "office" share. The folders are named "folder.xxxx", where xxxx is the userid of the account that created the lock folder. Everyone uses a network account, so everyone has a unique userID. If I list the .TemporaryItems folder using the CLI, i can see lock folders that are several days or a week old. So Word doesn't seem to be cleaning up after itself immediately, at least not always.
So my question: when userB connects to the office share on a borrowed machine (logged in to the client machine using the network home folder of userA), is it possible that word will now create lock folders for userB, and will be unable to clean up lock folders created by userA?
Anyone have other ideas for investigating the "file in use" problem?

Switched user back to the network home folder and adjusted the MS Word preferences so that the autorecovery files would be stored on the local client machine. There doesn't seem to be a comparable setting in the Excel preferences.
My initial testing suggests that this has reduced how often this problem occurs, but has not eliminated it. I tested by repeatedly opening and closing a couple of different word files in rapid succession -- i was able to replicate the "file opens as read only" problem occasionally.
I've talked to Apple server support about this issue. While they were helpful, they didn't have an explanation or solution for this problem. There are a number of postings in the microsoft mactopia discussion boards site where people report similar problems.

Microsoft word 2008 slow save with iMac 2009 and yosemite

I have microsoft word running on 4 different iMacs, all using Yosemite. My 2008 iMac 2009 iMac and 2014 retina display iMac all save word docs quickly. My 2011 iMac saves word docx and word doc documents slowly. All machines are basically the same. Memory is not the issue. I am running same updated version of word 2008 in same configuration. I reinstalled word on 2011 slow save iMac to no avail. problem started after upgraded to yosemite. i have 12 gigs of ram as i thought ram was issue. Any thoughts welcome. Are others noticing same problem?

There has been a better and free alternative to old versions of MS Word and MS Office since forever. Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 is the latest version of a free and complete All-In-One document processor, spreadsheet, drawing, presentation, database, & formula software, found here: http://www.openoffice.org
It also reads, writes and translates MS Word, saves in many formats, and is pretty easy to use. It's entirely modern and compatible with all the latest Mac operating systems. Good luck.

I suggest you do one of two things:
1. Upgrade to Office 2011 for OS X.
2. Try the freeware, Libre Office.

Microsoft word 2008 and os 10.8.5

I had to bring my mac to factory settings and lost my office for mac(word 2008). I have the disk and the key but when i put it in the computor it will not let me use it bc it says it cannot be modified. I have updated to OS X version 10.8.5. Help

Are you trying to run Office from the installer DVD? If that's what you're trying, that won't work. You need to install Office onto your Mac's hard drive.
If that's not what you mean, please post back with the exact error message and what you're doing when that message appears.

Microsoft Word 2008 and Spaces problem - found a workaround

Anyone who's tried running MS Word 2008 and Spaces knows that Word is pretty much unusable. The formatting palette moves to a different space, leaving behind the title bar, and the desktops just switch automatically, windows disappear, etc.
Here's a workaround that actually makes it usable. Disable the Toolbox/formatting palette by clicking the "Toolbox" button at the top of the Word window. The formatting palette will go away. You don't want this, it's the root of all evil. To get access to the options in the formatting palette, right click on a blank space somewhere in one of the toolbars, and select the toolbars you want access to. Then the stuff that was available previously in the palette will be available as a toolbar instead.
This bug has driven me nuts for months. NUTS. This seems to have fixed it. Just make sure you never enable anything that resembles the formatting palette and all should be fine. I haven't tried opening multiple word docs in different spaces yet, only the same space.

Now to your question > Open the application Word.
Now you will see on the right site of the Menu Bar 'FORMATTING PALETTE' next to the icon 'GALARY' click on it and the formatting palette will show up. To hide it click again on it.
