Lost ratings

Hi all,
I'm having a problem with my user ratings I hope you all can help me with. I spent countless hours putting user ratings on my pictures from 2005 so far. I then created a smart folder using date as the qualifier so that the folder would only contain my photos from 2005. I then burned this folder to a DVD using iPhoto.
Later, I had to reinstall my OS X because I was having some problems with some programs I put on it.
Now when I load my photos from the DVD, I can import the photos just fine, but none of the user ratings come with them. When I open them FROM the DVD in iPhoto, it shows me the ratings, so I know they're there. I've tried copying the DVD onto the harddrive, but nothing I've tried has gotten iPhoto to recognize the user ratings without the DVD in the drive.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Darren

Darren,
That should work fine. The top level folder on the DVD will actually be titled "iPhoto Library". Therefore, I would rename the current iPhoto Library folder and then drag the one off the DVD to your Pictures folder. Unless you have a different name for your current Library or it's in a location other than Pictures, you won't even have to select it the Option key way as that's the default for iPhoto.
After that, you can either re-import the other photos or use iPhoto Library Manager to merge your two libraries.
The only glitch I have noticed with this is if you have albums stored within folders. If that's the case, you may get a duplicate copy of the albums outside of the folders. However, they are easy to recognize and can be deleted.
Remember to eject the DVD before starting iPhoto. It's no big deal but it will avoid confusion.
Good Luck and let us know how it works!!
Sam

  • Lost ratings during data migration to new mac

I recently bought the new macbook pro and had the applestore migrate my entire data to from my old macbook. Absolutely everything worked out fine except that I lost all ratings in Lightroom version 2. As I have around 15,000 pics and most of them rated I am a bit desperate. Lucky enough I still have my old macbook working and also have a back up where the ratings are still showing. How can I combine the old ratings with the ratings of my new catalog, as I have already rated more pics on my new mac. Thanks

My library now shows up but all the ratings, etc are gone, but they show up in my playlists, but they are ALL shadowed. itunes and the store loads, plays songs from the library and i can listen to my ipod with headphones, but can't add to, click on, or make new playlists.
Rumor on these boards is that apple is releasing a v.5.0.1 this week, but i don't know if it will fix my problem.
any help would be greatly appreciated before i go buy another mp3 player.

I managed to get my library back, only thing i lost was ratings, album art was even there. but, my ipod itself still has ghosted playlists that i can't edit, delete or anything. i do notice a padlock icon at the bottom of the itunes screen when i select these playlists--could that be it? how do i get rid of it? i've spent all this money on the ipod and accessories and someone at work w/a $50 mp3 player has no problems. sigh

  • Lost ratings in export of versions as JPEG

I upgraded to 2.1.1 today and exported images tonight as Jpegs from a Smart Album. All the images had been rated and the rating appeared in the Smart album. When I exported them, the ratings dropped off & no longer appear in CS3 browser. The rating box is checked in preferences. What is happening? all the work to rate them and now I have nothing.
    Can anyone help?

I'm pretty sure ratings is not passed during export as I don't believe "rating" is a valid IPTC field. I don't have my IPTC schema book handy or I'd check to be sure.
What rating box in preferences are you referring to?

  • Lost ratings playcounts and playlists from itunes

Itunes would not open, is said, the path itunes had an invalid character and came up with an error, so I reinstalled itunes using the disk clean up utility for windows, and finally was able to get rid of the itunes itself, so reinstalled itunes from apple.com/itunes/download and all my music was there but greyed out, including playlists and playcounts and ratings, so I changed my preferences to make sure my itunes was reading from the correct itunes folder location, which I had on another hard drive. When I reinstalled itunes I had put the program files in the same hard drive as my music was stored on so that Itunes is being read from and playing from on the same hard drive. Now how would I go about getting my ratings back?

    Hi Polydorus,
thanks for your help. But unfortunally it did not work. I will write down my setup, maybe you still could help me to solve the problem.
At home I am using a PC with the latest version of iTunes. All the music is not stored on that PC, but on a seperated server in my house. The path is //NAMEOFTHESERVER/music
On my PC I have a iTunes folder in MyDocuments with a folder artwork, iTunes libary, and iTunes Music libary.xml
Following you instructions; I copied those three files to the EHD. Then I started iTunes on my laptop (at this time not connected to the network) with the shift key and there was eveything there. But when I clicked on a mucis file in iTunes it would not start. Instead it asked me "could not be used because the original could not be found ... do you want to search for it ?"
Do you have any clue ?
Thank you very much for your help !
    Best regards,

  • ITunes library - lost ratings and podcasts

I held the shift key and opened iTunes and chose an alternate library. I then closed iTunes and restarted the same way but this time chose my main library. In doing so it appears that all of my ratings I disappeared except for those give 2 years ago and all of my Podcast subscriptions are gone.
Any ideas on why this would happen and how to restore the library back to the way it is supposed to be?

If the library you have chosen is 2 year out of date, is it possible that you have chosen the wrong library?
You haven't said anything about how you have things set up, but the sort of thing I am thinking of might be:
You moved your music and library files onto an external drive a while ago leaving your old library on the the c: drive. When you chose a library you chose the old one on the c: drive rather than the one on the external drive?

  • Is there a way to "purge" muliple copies of the same song?

Hi, I lost my iTunes library after connecting my iPhone (don't know how or why or even if that was the cause). The library had around 20 songs total in it after disconnecting the iPhone - down from several thousand. I did have a few older copies of the Library in different places which were not identical so I imported each of them which resulted in many duplicates or triplicates. I thought I could easily purge - i.e. delete all but the most recent copy but I have not been able to find a way to do this. It would take forever to delete them one at a time. Can anyone please tell me how to accomplish this? Thanks - Dave

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and copes sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • When I delete duplicates how do I know which version is the original song and which is the duplicate?

I have recently transfered all my music to a new computer and duplicates have appeared in my itunes. I have chosen to 'show exact duplicates' so that it is easier for me to delete, but I can't work out which version of the song I need to delete. (When I click to delete on the top version a box appears stating 'move to recycle bin', but when I click on the second version the box which appears just says 'delete file from itunes.')
Also - does any one know where these duplicates have emerged from?!?
I hope I have given enough info. I would be super grateful if someone could shed some light on this!
    Thanks.

  • How to delete duplicates in 5 minutes, any version

Do you want a magic wand? Read this entirely before you start using my magic wand: Open your music folder, select iTunes, then iTunes Media folder, then Music folder there.  Open each artist folder and copy the song files only to another folder of your choosing elsewhere on your computer, do this one artist at a time or you can get windows to do it, but you can look how to do that up.  You need to have all music in ONE FOLDER, no sub-folders, you can use several methods but the quickest is to open a fold press control A then control c and then with the destination for the copies opened already press control V.  These commands are select all, copy, and paste respectively.  I would move the files since it can cause administrator privilege problems. Once all music is in another folder with no sub-folders, just the music files press control F to open find.  type in (1).mp3 or (1).m4a or whichever file extension the music is (there are 8: .mp3 , .m4a , .m4v , .wma are the main ones.  Anyway, once you type in (1).m4a all duplicates will be highlighted.  Hit delete.
Congratulations.  You have now deleted every duplicate are in the library. Every single one, because windows add (#). to any duplicate file o any kind in windows.  ANYTHING.  The number depends on how many duplicates have been added, for example (1).m4a (2).m4a (3).m4a....etc.  You can do this for every file extension type, such as (1).mp3 then (1)m4a to be safe or you can just type (1). by itself and get all fill types.  I don't recommend because it can accidentally delete things you don't want to.  The best way is to hit control F then enter (1).m which will select all the music files with the exception of windows media music which is .wma.  For all duplicates i would search for number (1) (2) and (3).  If you have more than three duplicates you can connect the dots on how to find the rest.
Any how, then go back to iTunes, select all songs, (control A) hit delete and move to recycle bin.  I would delete from cloud too, but that's up to you. I do this because i have iTunes match and it will automatically add to iCloud when i hit update iTunes match.  MAKE SURE THAT IN PREFERENCES UNDER the EDIT menu list on the menu bar, you have set iTunes to auto organize your library and auto copy files to the iTunes library before you add the files back.  Click menu, add file, then select all the files in whatever folder you copied the music to, don't just add folder because it can create errors. Use the add file then open the folder and press control A to select all then enter.
You are done.  No duplicates, no program needed, no spyware or malware or any other crap.  Simply put, this whole process takes about 10 minutes, maybe 15 on a reasonably fast machine.  It depends on your hard type, chipset speed, processor, and how big your library is.  I did it using a 6 core 3.8 ghz 64bit system to a 750gb solid state drive @ 3.0gbs sata setting.  It took about 6 minutes total.  One last thing, if you have previously deleted the ORIGINAL file then you will delete your current copy because it will be the duplicate not the original, easy way to prevent is to save the file you original copied the music files only to as a back up on another hard drive or server or another folder, just to be safe.
    Problem solved.

Manually moving 100s or 1000s of folders worth of tracks to a common location is hardly going to take 5 minutes, though if your library is small enough it may have suited you. Deleting and reimporting media from the library loses ratings, play counts, playlist membership etc. When iTunes adds a new track whose properties would normally mean that it occupies the same location as an existing file it adds a trailing space and a digit. When Windows Explorer is used to merge folders and files have the same names it may offer to add (1) (2) etc. rather than replace but that should be an option.
If the library has no duplicates, but the folder does, simply add the media folder to the library and then dedupe by sorting on Date Added as shown below. For anything more complex I would recommend using my script for best results.

  • Is there any way for additions made by one user of a shared library to be visible to the other user of the same library, without having to always "add file to library"?  This was the whole reason we consolidated the library into a public folder

My wife and I share a computer but have separate Windows ID's.  We also each have an iTunes account, using two separate Apple ID's.  We have always struggled with the headache of getting music that one of us added (via purchase, downloading CD, etc.) to the other person's music library.  A friend suggested we consolidate and share the same library.  Sounded like a good idea so we moved the libraries to a public folder, consolidated them, etc.  But now when one of us adds music to the library, the other person still has to do an "add file/folder to library" in order for them to be able to see it.  This is exactly the step we were hoping to eliminate by this consolidation.  Does anyone know if there is a way to make this happen automatically, or will we have to continue to do this every time?
Also, ended up with a lot of duplicates in the process of consolidating.  Is there any way to identify and "mass delete" these?  It will take a while to go through them all individually as the library is somewhat substantial (approx. 16k songs)
Hardware is Windows 8, one iPod classic, one iPod Nano (obviously only selected playlists on this one).  All hardware and iTunes running latest software.
    Any information would be appreciated!

It sounds like you are using two independent libraries with a common media folder, whereas the plan would have been to ensure that both profiles were using the same library library database. Although you can place this within the Public folder I would normally create a shared library at the root of a drive, e.g. at X:\iTunes where X: is the drive that you want to use. See Make a split library portable for information on moving the library around back into a standard shape.
