Lost read permissions on files in Time Capsule backup

I've been doing some restores from my Time Capsule, but after re-installing Leopard fresh from the install DVD, I've lost read permissions on the files in the Time Machine backups. Clicking "more info" for the file in Time Machine shows that the listing for my user name "patrick" with read&write access has been replaced with "(unknown)". Is there any way to fix this? Thanks

Turns out that the mounted back disk (not the raw Time Capsule volume) has the backup folders, now I get it.
Anyway, I looked at those and am able to open them directly in Finder without going through Time Machine to add an ACL entry for me to read the necessary files using the "Get Info" dialog. It turns out that my old user id was 502 and my new user id is 501.
While I can get a few files that I need by manually adding a read & write ACL entry for myself, I can't change the owner on the files using chown, even as superuser. It keeps saying "Operation Not Permitted". I cant set the basic permissions with commands like chown 755 Library, either.
Any idea why? If I can't figure out how to set the own on all of the dirs in my home dir from various backups, I'll just have to try to get all my files that I need and erase the backup disk to start over, something I'm not really excited about.

  • How to drag a file to time capsule???

How to drag a file to time capsule? I would like to use it  to store stuff like video and music, every time I try to drag a file in the TC it doesen't work ???

Mount the TC first by double clicking it in finder.
Create a new directory before you start copying files to it.
Do not forget the TC is not designed for file sharing.. it is a backup target for TM. It cannot back itself up nor can TM back up a network drive.. anything you put on the TC can be lost if it dies.. TC die regularly .. be warned.

  • Can't copy files to time capsule

I need some help with my new 2TB Time Capsule.  I setup the time capsule and did my first time machine backup.  Now I want to copy over additional files to time capsule from my full hard drive on my iMac. When I drag files over the following message occurs "The item “FILE NAME” can’t be moved because “Time Capsule” can’t be modified."
I went into my aiport utilities -- opened up my time capsule -- went to disks -- clicked file sharing -- and the enabled file sharing box is checked.
Help! How do I move files to my time capsule.
    Thanks in advance

From post above: "Now I want to copy over additional files to time capsule from my full hard drive on my iMac"
I'm sorry for the confusion.  My device is called "Time Capsule" --- How do I remedy the error I am receiving?
"The item “FILE NAME” can’t be moved because “Time Capsule” can’t be modified."
This error occurs when I am drag a document from my iMac hard drive to my time capsule (which technically has another name).

  • How to restore mail files from Time Capsule onto a different machine?

My Macbook Pro hard drive crashed, and I want to restore my backed-up mail files from Time Capsule onto my Desktop Mac (iMac 27").  When I try to restore by opening Time Capsule with Mail already open, I can only see the current mail files on the iMac (not the backed up files on the MacBook Pro), even when I point to the MacBook Pro backup file.

  • How to browse files in time capsule from outstate?

how to browse files in time capsule from outstate?

I presume by outstate you mean remote access ie from internet in a different location??
If so google for remote access time capsule.
It is simple if you have TC setup as the main router and a static public IP.
Just go to finder, go, go to server and type in AFP://IPofTC
The TC has to be checked to allow wan access and use a decent password as the security for AFP is poor.

  • Can't access files in Time Capsule in WIN7 64 Bit- says folder is empty

Hi there. I can't seem to access my files in Time Capsule using WIN7 64 BIT, it works fine as a router , i can see the time capsule online and how much space it's occupied, however whenever i click on it , it says folder it empty. I can access the files from OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
I tried to drag and drop new files into the Time Capsule in WIN7 , it copies/paste the files fine for a second and then disappear, and if i go back to the Snow Leopard i can see those folders again , so i am guessing i need enable some kind access/ file sharing option or whatever that allows the files to be visible. Has anyone faced this situation in WIN7 64 BIT ?
    Thanks

How to improve the speed for backing up files to time capsule via in hose wifi?

    via in hose wifi?
    Use a bigger hose??
    House??
Need to spell this out a bit more..
But speed via 2.4ghz to the TC is restricted by Apple to max 130mbps link speed.. much slower actual transfer.. latest TC and laptops can do 450mbps on 5ghz but you need to be up close.. so place the TC near the device using it.. and force 5ghz connection by using a different name for 5ghz network.

  • Can you rename backed up files on time capsule?

Can you rename backed up file on time capsule?

You can rename the sparsebundle file that Time Machine has used for the backups of a Mac on a Time Capsule.....if that is what you are asking......just like you can rename any file on a Mac.

  • View files on Time Capsule with 'different' Mac

After my install of Lion failed, the Apple Store did a clean install and renamed my MacBook (I can't remember the exact old name).  Now I need a file off my Time Capsule backup but Time Capsule seems to be thinking the MacBook is not to have access to the existing backed up files because I see no way to gain access to them.
But my question is more general, How can I view and copy particular files residing on Time Capsule with a 'different' Mac?  Can it be searched with a utility of some sort?
    TIA, Allan

If you're talking about Time Machine backups, when your Mac's internal HD was erased, it's treated as a different drive -- and that drive is no longer connected.    See #E3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Note that the name of your Mac doesn't matter; Time Machine uses a hardware address to keep track of it.  Only if you get a new Mac or have the logic board (which contains the address) replaced, will that become a problem.

  • How to wipe out the files on Time Capsule so I can sell it

The first back up was successful, but I can't get it work ever since. The yellow light is always flashing even I follow the direction to reinstall. It's too hard for me to handle compare regular external hard drive back up. I bought a 1-TB LaCie hard drive to back up my files and have no problem so I would like to know how to securely remove my files on Time Capsule so I can sell it.
    Thanks,
    Sabrina

Open the Airport Utility --> Manual Setup --> Disks --> "Erase". Select "7-Pass Erase". That will be sufficient.

  • Restore deleted files from time capsule. how???

    Hi all,
by mistake I deleted some important files in Time Capsule. Does it exist the way how to restore it?

You cannot restore files without direct access to the disk and a disk restore utility. That means opening the TC.. removing the hard disk and connecting it directly to a computer.

  • HT201250 Can i store my files on time capsule from my ipad, and copy them back, without using itunes to sync the tablet?

Can i store my files on time capsule from my ipad, and copy them back, without using itunes to sync the tablet? i want to buy an iPad Air and to forget my laptop and i think that even the 128 gb wont be enough some times. I am wandering if time capsule can be used as external hdd and to connect on it via wifi ...

No. You cannot access your Time Capsule directly from an iOS device. The only way to back up an iOS device is to a computer through iTunes or to iCloud, though in some cases you can open and save files via another cloud-based service such as Dropbox.

  • How do i transfer files from time capsule to new computer?

I recently lost my vintage Imac hard drive and to top it off, likely had a faulty OS. Good news is I have a time capsule, bad news is it is also suspected to have the faulty OS. The Imac is history and I currently have a macbook pro with Lion OS installed and now I want to retrieve all my files off the time capsule. I was told to simply "drag and drop" the files from time capsule to my new macbook. apparantly not so simple. I see the the drive in finder and a lonely folder which I am seemingly unable to do anything with. any suggestions?

Drag and drop is not the way to go. Run Migration Assistant, found in your Applications/Utilities folder on the Macbook Pro. Follow prompts to recover information from a Time Machine backup, and point it to the Time Capsule.
Note that the recovery will recreate your old user from the iMac. You will have already set up a user on the MBP, but the files will not go into your new user - they'll go into your old user. Once you log out, you'll see your old user appear as a login option.
