Lost Regarding Apple TVs Position in HT Hardware Lineup

If I am using my MDD computer for a media center, what would ATV do additionally, and where would it physically fit in the lineup.
Just getting my head around this whole HT thing, well OMW getting all the necessary cables, content, software, etc ....... and wondering about ATV.
Thank you

I'd say the tv is like front row and then some. It will do quite a bit more than front row and do it considerably more intuitively. The likelihood is that you won't use every feature of the tv and your experience may well vary from the next persons.
Personally, I don't use mine much for music, I buy and rent a small amount of video content, my biggest use is for displaying my home movies and photographs. Others will likely use theirs in different ways.

  • How can I only allow my Apple TVs access to my LAN?

In my set-up, I have three Apple TVs in separate rooms all connected to a LAN via their ethernet ports. They are connected via a switch to my Airport Extreme and my Mac Mini is also connected to Airport as an iTunes server. The Airport runs a WiFi network for internet access but I don't want people to be able to plug their computers into my LAN and have access to the whole set-up.
What can I do to achieve this?
I don't want the Apple TV's to rely on the WiFi so I can use MAC Address Filtering, since it is patchy and streaming HD videos is more stable via ethernet. I have looked into setting-up an 802.1x network but when investigating the Configurator app to set-up the Apple TVs to access an 802.1x network it refers only to WiFi set-ups again. Also, I don't know much about RAIDUS servers and authentication, such as whether I'd need any additional hardware etc.
Any help would be gratefully received.

...any app launched from /Applications holds only the permissions of the user launching the app, regardless of the owner (presumably because anyone, including "root" can install applications into /Applications).
It has nothing to do with where the application is installed. Any executable runs with the permissions of the user who runs it. The only exception is a binary executable with the SUID or SGID bit set, and then only if it's on the root device, and only if it's not an Aqua application. The SG/UID bits are ignored otherwise.
So, anyone who has installed Wireshark from the "native .dmg" by drag-and-dropping won't be able to use the suid trick because the OS will ignore the suid permissions.
Sorry, I don't understand this at all. Wireshark invokes dumpcap as a child process to capture packets. If dumpcap is installed anywhere on the root device as SUID root, then it will run as root regardless of who invokes it.
The suid method will only work for Macports and Fink installations...
That's not correct. There are many SUID or SGID executables in a default installation of the Mac OS, and none of them comes from MacPorts or Fink.

  • Is it possible for a hotel to use Apple TVs to distribute movies throughout the hotel as a 'hotel movie system'?

    Hi,
We are a very small resort business that is located inside the World Heritage Area.  Due to this, we can't get broadband or even good mobile phone reception.  Needless to say, the only way we get internet is via wireless internet providers and that can be quite flaky.
We need to establish a hotel entertainment system that can allow us to distribute movies that we've purchased across our internal wi-fi network (to avoid the need to do loads of trenching / cabling etc).
We are thinking about whether Apple TVs can help us do this? i.e.can we prepurchase and download a stack of movies and then make them available across our wifi network via the Apple TVs?  We don't need to charge guests for access, it will be a value-add part of our service.
If this is possible is there also a way we can prevent people from access their personal iTunes accounts via the wireless internet?  At the moment with the limited wireless ability, we couldn't afford to have this brought to a halt due to downloads etc?
    Cheers
    Helen

As Winston mentions, talk to your lawyer as you may be in violation of the terms of use of Apple TV content if you rebroadcast it like that.  There may well be legal ways to do it in your type of situation, but you'd want to be sure.
If you want to block others from using their own Apple TV's, you should be able to set up a firewall rule to block access at your wifi router.  The ports used are listed in the following Apple KB article.  Depending on your hardware, you could either just block ports, or if you have a firewall of your own inbetween the router and your clients, you could right rules based blocking.  Simplest thing is just disable port 5353in your wifi router(s)), but you could also use a rule based firewall entry to block the application, regardless of port.

  • Multiple Apple TVs with one iTunes Library

I have searched this subject and found one thread that touches on the topic. It says that I should be able to "connect" five Apple TVs to my single iTunes library. I have on original Apple TV that connects to my iTunes library just fine. I just purchased a second ATV for my bedroom. It will go thru the setup process easily and will connect to the iTunes music store. When I browse the "My Movies" menu item it will show me all the movies that I converted with Handbrake from my DVD collection but none of the purchased content from the iTunes Store. When I browse the "My TV Shows" menu item I get a message that my iTunes library contains no content. (my TV shows library contains only content purchased from the iTunes store). This scenario only occurs if I connect to the iTunes library as a primary connection that allows syncing. If I add the iTunes library as a "shared library" I am able to see and stream ALL of the content from my iTunes library.
Will an iTunes library only connect and sync with ONE ATV and do all secondary ATVs need to "share"?
As a side note.....when I noticed this problem I thought there was a hardware problem with the ATV so I took it back to the apple store. When we connected it to their media library it gave the same message that "there was no content in the iTunes library". It would however successfully share as a streaming only connection. I was given a new ATV but the same problem as described above continues.

It has been properly set up. I even purchased a TV show and a movie with it from the iTunes store that would play while still in the download phase but once the video was downloaded and synced back to my iTunes library it was no longer visible from the ATV.

  • Is there any update regarding Apple maps from Apple...?

is there any update regarding Apple maps from Apple...? I live in sydney. I Know there are lots of issues with Apple maps but i reported more than 3 issues and i could see there is no resolution for those issues ?

Apple does not broadcast anything.   The audio encoding options selected for content is controlled by the services the content comes from.  Apple just distributes content they are provided with.  I am not 100% sure but I believe the current ATV only supports 5.1 so it is pretty likely 7.1 could not be supported with out a new ATV device update, and they have not updated ATV in about four years now.   Starting to wonder if they are going to.   They used to own this market and now have pretty much lost it.   You might check Amazon Fire.   I think it might support 7.1.   I finally gave up on waiting on Apple and bought one and am mostly happy with it.

  • Can itune account be sync to separate apple tvs

I have a 1st generation and latest model of apple tvs.  Can I sync with both at the same time?
Another problem that I currently have is that my latest model cannot find my mac for hime sharing.

You can't actually sync your library with both Apple TVs, because other than the Apple TV 1, the later Apple TV's do not sync at all with iTunes, they can only stream from it. However if you are asking whether you can watch the same content from iTunes on both Apple TV'ds at once, then yes you can.
With regard to home sharing, have you turned home sharing on in iTunes and on the Apple TV and use the same password and ID.

  • I have 2 apple tvs. One in the bedroom, one in the living room. When I try to airplay from my iPad, only the bedroom icon shows up. How do I add the living room?

I have 2 apple tvs. One in the bedroom, one in the living room. When I try to airplay from my iPad, only the bedroom icon shows up. How do I add the living room?

Firstly, go to http://iforgot.apple.com and sign in with the ID you use for iCloud. A new password will be sent to your associated email address.
If that doesn't work, for example because it's going to an address you can't access, then you will have to contact Support. Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password' and click 'Continue'.

  • HT1391 Where can i report my iPhone lost to Apple? and Can Apple lock it?

Where can i report my iPhone lost to Apple? and Can Apple lock it?

If you set up the Find My iPhone service prior to your iPhone going missing, then there is a chance that can be tracked and locked, though it depends on a number of factors: the iPhone is turned on, connected to either the 3G or a WiFi network, or has not had the Find My iPhone service disabled or the iPhone been completely restored. Log into icloud.com and go to the Find My iPhone section. If you did not set up Find My iPhone, check with your cell carrier. Some carriers offer their own tracking service, though you usually have to sign up when you still have the phone and have to pay for the service.
If your carrier does not offer such a service and you did not set up Find My iPhone, then there is no way to track the unit nor lock it, though if you set a screenlock passcode, it would be locked already. Notify the police and your cell carrier, and change any passwords for any online accounts you may have used from your iPhone (the iTunes Store, for instance).
    Regards.

  • New 27" iMac - house w/ 1 mac, 3pcs, 2 apple tvs, airport Xtreme, time cap

Hello all! Can anyone out there answer or direct me to a discussion thread to help with me with a confusing situation, and I'm not sure what hardware to use for the best connection. I have the following, although the time capsule and the 2nd apple tv are currently not connected:
    Belkin N1 router
Airport Extreme is connected to belkin (originally intended to "extend network")
    Time Capsule 1GB
TWO hp laptops with Vista & built in WiFi
    one desktop pc w/ XP
NEW 27" iMac (built in airport extreme)
2 Apple TVs in 2 different rooms
What would be the best way for me to network this?? Use the Time Capsule AND the Airport Extreme and disconnect the Belkin? Which would be best to connect to the cable modem?
Recently prior to getting new desktop Mac, I had the Airport Extreme connected to the belkin to "extend" the wireless, then I had my itunes and Apple tv connected to an "apple network" off the airport extreme. The new iMac seems to have confused me.
Should I use EITHER the airport extreme base OR the time Capsule, or would it work to have the two items and nix the belkin n1 wireless router? AAARRRGGGGGHHHH.
Be my savior and direct me to a helpful thread, or help me here.

You have a lot of options and probably all would work very well. The only way that you would find the "best" option is to try them and see what combination of equipment works best.
You can leave everything as you currently have it and just have the new iMac connect to the network either wirelessly or via Ethernet.
Since everything is currently working, I'm not sure why you want to change it and what you want out of a network.

  • How many different Apple TVs can I share one iTunes Store account with?

I currently have one AppleTV at my home, and one at my mothers home. We both share the same iTunes Store account, therefore we share the movies that each other purchase. I am interested in getting my father and my aunt and Apple TV as well, I want them to also be able to use my iTunes Store account. That way, if say my father and I both want to watch the same movie, we can split the cost.
I also currently own an iPhone, and an iPad. I'm going to be getting my mother and father iPads as well. I want them to be able to use my iTunes Store account on those devices as well, and be able to stream movies on them.
I know it says that your iTunes Store account can only be associated with 10 devices, but I'm wondering where Apple TVs fit into that stance. It's probably a stupid question, but I was just curious if the fact that it is iCloud changes anything.
Essentially, I'm wondering if four Apple TVs, three iPads, one iPhone, and my one desktop computer can all stream my iCloud movie content, simultaneously. I doubt there will ever be more than two or three going simultaneously, but I just want to know the limitations before I buy these gifts for my family members and run into an unpleasant surprise.
    Thank you for your time,
    Charles

as many as you can other computers with itunes accessing the shared ituned lib
likely the limitation is the network bandwidth more then number of connected devices
