Suddenly my husbands old iPod mini is not recognized despite cable changes, restart of iTunes, and computer. Can get it to recognize my classic iPod. He has not done a update of this mini in a longtime I think. I followed all the hints Apple posts to get an unrecognized device to register...this is on a Mac using Yosemite up to date on everything

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. Apple does not fix your iPod so make sure you back the iPod up and have all the synced media in your iTunes library.

There is no default setting. You have to set the passcodes. If you cannot remember them, then see:

If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
Connect your device to your computer.
Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
Select the Summary tab.
Select the Restore option.
When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not necessary to create another.
Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up, you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple logo while starting up:

what do i do if i have lost my passcode for my ipod touch?
Connect the iPod to its syncing computer and restore via iTunes. If iTune asks for the passcode and y can't enter the passcode, place the iPod in recovery mode and then restore the iPod. Fo recovery mode see:

Firewire NECESSARY for older iPods to complete OS updates
After hours trying to diagnose a problem where I couldn't get an update to complete, I learned that older iPods that used both Firewire and USB require the Firewire to complete an update. USB is just fine for recharging.
As the Firewire adaptors are no longer sold by Apple, you'll need to go to the Apple Store if, like me, you've lost it.If you don't use them, then you can uninstall them.

Connect the iOS device to your computer and restore via iTunes. Place the iPod in Recovery Mode if necessary to allow the restore.

I Upgraded to quicktime pro years ago on my pc , then when i got a mac i purchased another copy for mac. I ve now gone back to pc and want to retrieve my old key code. The check your order history only goes back 18 months and i think i got mine about 4 years ago . Any advice ? or do i need to buy another copy . Cheers
Regardless of what any of us think, the fact is that Apple no longer provides lookup of orders older than 18 months. Why they chose this none of us here can say, but that's what they have decided. So it's no longer possible to look up a QuickTime key purchased more than 18 months ago. If the user failed to keep a copy of the email or otherwise record the key, as Apple themselves advise, then a new QT Pro key will be required.

So I checked to see if the warranty is still good online and it is, but if I go to get it fixed will I still need a receipt?
No receipt is required since accidental damage is not covered by the warranty.
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for $99 for 16 GB 5G and $149 for the other 5Gs. They do not fix yours.

For warranty coverage you only need a receipt if this says you need one:
