"lost" snow leopard upgrade, wont reinstall via disc
I upgraded to snow leopard on my 15.4 macbook pro when snow leopard came out. have had no problems and running along fine although i have not had any software updates since around Sept 2010. Ran manual check now for software updates this morning having noticed there should be one and it didnt offer me one I checked the os details via about this mac which showed 10.5.8 so have put the snow leopard disc back into my mac which ran the disc then spat it out but im still showing as running on v 10.5.8 ?
"I checked the os details via about this mac which showed 10.5.8..."
10.5.8 is Leopard not Snow Leopard. It would appear that you haven't updated at all.

Is there anyway for me to get my lost Snow Leopard upgrade online?
I had updated my Leapord MacBook(late2008, OS X 10.5.8) to Snow Leopard a few years ago but lost the update when I reformated from the CD. Is there any way for me to get this upgrade back on line?
Sorry, but no.
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. -
Had to restore my Mac Book with Snow Leopard. My i Life disc appears to be damaged, and I can't restore my iPhoto application. I have searched for downloads but all appear to be upgrades. Any ideas on how to restore iphotos
Given what you describe you will have to upgrade Snow Leopard by downloading and installing Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Then go to the App Store and sign in with your Apple ID. Purchase and download Mountain Lion to upgrade your OS. Then purchase the latest upgrades for the iLife applications which includes iPhoto.
Or you can go on eBay, Google, or Amazon and purchase another copy of the DVD based iLife. -

Loud rattling noise in drive with snow leopard upgrade disc
I attempted to upgrade my mac mini intel core duo (2.0 gHz with 3 GB) with the new snow leopard upgrade disc; it makes a horrendous nopise in the drive not unlike a leafblower, and an error message finally appears with CANNOT READ DISC. Every other media disc works fine in the drive; whether CD ROM or DVD. It works fine in my MacBook (Black from 2007). Any ideas on how to do this install? Apple checked the disc and they say it's fine.

Reinstalling using the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD?
This may be a stupid question, but I need to reinstall my Mac, however I only have the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD that was shipped to me since I the leopard dvd is stuffed somewhere in the back cupboard that I can't find for love nor money.
Can I erase the hard drive and perform a clean installation from the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD? I've a feeling that I can't but just wanted to confirm.
Thanks!Hi thelongmile;
If it is the upgrade DVD then you can't.

Snow Leopard - Bento 2.0v5 - Lost record data on Snow Leopard Upgrade
Any thoughts on this one: After an update to Snow Leopard 10.6 and 10.6.1, the data entered in Bento fields associated with contact names in Address Book are no longer available (only 10 of 300 or more records are still available) In addition, the categories associated with names in Address Book have no records in the associated categories in Bento. Further, this problem exists for all of my backup copies of Bento. (i.e. it appears the only way to go recover this might be to go back to a full computer backup recovery from prior to 10.6. I hypothesis that the links between individual records in Bento and Address Book have somehow become corrupted or broken. Therefore the data may well exist in Bento but it is not retrievable. This could be because Bento might believes incorrectly that the original AddressBook record was deleted. Just to confuse things a bit, another possible source of the problem may be because AddressBook is synchronized with other computers and Google. However, post my upgrades to 10.6, all these other accounts were download from the main computer on which Bento resides. A minor Address Book - Mail bug is possibly related. That is that when I "add to Address Book" by ctl-clicking an email address in Mail, this email address apparently added but it is often not found in Address Book. At times it comes shows up later but often it just disappears entirely.
I have gotten a little closer to the problem. It appears that the update to SnowLeopard is not the problem. Rather syncing might be the culprit. I sync AddressBook with MobileMe and Google. The latter was as addition immediately after the Snow Leopard upgrade. I did clean out the GMail address book prior to syncing. Recently, I noticed some duplicate records in AddressBook. Some at least had two middle initials with periods. It appears there is a different format for this cell in the two systems. In one record they showed with no space and in the other with a space between the first period and the second letter.
I was able to recover my AddressBook data. All the records had an update date from my first syncing after adding GMail. The old records had a mix of dates. I just went back to the date with mixed dates. After recovering the records and turning off syncing, Bento is working just fine and all old data is displayed.

Problems w/MS Office 2008 & Google Earth Ever Since Snow Leopard "Upgrade"
I probably should have checked this forum before taking my son's advice to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6. Ever since this upgrade, I've had repeated and frustrating problems with two applications: MS Office 2008 for the Mac and Google Earth for the Mac.
Note that I did an "in-place" upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, i.e., I inserted the installation DVD into my iMac and then double-clicked on "Install Mac OS X".
Office 2008: Ever since the Snow Leopard upgrade, MS Office 2008 has been crashing. Typically, it's Entourage crashing when a crash does occur because that's the office app that I run 95% of the time. However, whenever Entourage crashes and I try to launch Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, they won't launch either... The icons will bounce a few times in the dock but won't run. (The Entourage crash is the only Office App that actually generates a crash window.) Note that there are two identities configured on my iMac, both of which which use Entourage. The key thing about this situation is that when the Office 2008 crash does occur, restarting the iMac ALWAYS resolves the problem until the next time a crash occurs. I've tried to determine what combination of events, i.e., apps open/being used in either/both identities, etc. is the trigger, but I can't find anything obvious. Sometimes I can use the iMac for a whole day without a crash, but that's unusual. If Entourage is left open in both identities, maybe a couple of days will pass without a crash, but invariably it happens again, and then it's reboot time again. In cases where Entourage is left running (in one or both identities), we will still eventually get a crash in one of them if one of us tries to open a WinWord attachment (with a "Not enough memory to run Word" error). If at that point I close Entourage and try to restart it, it crashes. I've tried everything I could find on the Office for the Mac forums, including deleting duplicate fonts, doing a safe start-up, fixing disk permissions via Disk Utility, zapping the PRAM, turning filing sharing off then on (including deleting everything listed in the Shared Folders section), logging out/logging back in, etc., all to no avail. One of the Office 2008 for the Mac forum contributors suggested that the problem was with my Snow Leopard Install, but then a contributor to another more general Apple forum blames Office for Mac. (This is exactly the sort of finger-pointing exercise that I'd hoped to avoid when I made the plunge from being a long-time Windows user to becoming an OS X user...; - )
Google Earth: This just flat-out WILL NOT RUN ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I try to run it, it bounces in the dock for about a minute then just stops, staying fixed to the dock until I do a Force-Quit. (I don't have it permanently tethered to the dock since I only use it occasionally.) I've tried deleting/reinstalling, including Google Earth's suggestions to remove files from my identity's Google Earth folder in the Library folder, but no dice.
My take on all of this is that despite all of Apple's advertising to the contrary, their OS (including updates to their OS) isn't necessarily as trouble-free/stable as their anti-Windows spots would have you believe. Sorry for this long post, but any help would be much appreciated.I left my system running all day in 64-bit kernel mode. (I left Entourage running the whole time.) Just now closed Entourage and tried reopening it. Same deal with Google Earth. They both crashed. Here's a screen paste of the entire Microsoft crash log for Entourage:

Hello,
I want to purchase Snow Leopard (upgrade version) but I was planning on doing a format when installing it.
Is it possible?
Thank you!cocoazenith wrote:

Yes, the 10.6.3 white retail disk can upgrade 10.5 to 10.6 via the installer, but you can also hold c or option key down while booting from the disk and use Disk Utility to Erase and then install 10.6 fresh.
Naturally all programs and user file will be removed, so you need to backup files first and take stock of your programs that will have to be reinstalled again from original sources.
To get the white 10.6.3 disk, call Apple via the phone, it's not sold online anymore, or search Amazon.com or amc related websites for the disk.
Most commonly used backup methods
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
However if you choose to upgrade over 10.5, keeping your programs and files (backup files regardless) intact and it proceeds just fine, but want to improve the performance, you can use this method
How to properly defrag a Mac's hard drive
If your upgrading from 10.5 to get to 10.7 or 10.8, I don't advise it. Software Update to 10.6.8 max and stay there, your machine is too old.
Things to consider before upgrading OS X -
HP scanjet 8200 inop after Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade
I upgraded my 2008 iMac Intel computer to Snow Leopard from Leopard, and then did the download process to end up at 10.6.8. After this I found that my HP 8200 flatbed scanner wasn't recognized by the iMac. Searched for HP software upgrade to work with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and downloaded that from the HP site. Even though the first portion of that download was successful, upon reboot to finish the install the computer doesn't follow up with the finishing steps. Tried the HP download twice with the same result.
The scanner is still unusable, and when I try to uninstall the HP scanner it can't be done because the files are corrupted and unavailable. Used the Time Machine to go back prior to the Snow Leopard upgrade, but the scanner is still unrecognized. Would the proper procedure for this have been to uninstall the scanner prior to the OS upgrade to Snow Leopard, and then reinstall the scanner, followed by downloading the drivers needed for Snow Leopard? Or is there some inherent conflict with the drivers on the 8200 install disc that will corrupt the process if Snow Leopard is the OS when I do the install? How do I proceed from here to make the scanner functional with Snow Leopard? After a third attempt at the download of the HP drivers and files appropriate for Snow Leopard I was successful. It may have been successful on the first attempt, but I found I was trying to uninstall the original files for the earlier version HP uses to work with Leopard, which had already been replaced with the Snow Leopard version......! Therefore I was trying to uninstall files which weren't there anymore, and that's why I was getting the 'missing or corrupted' message. As usual, operator error in this case, but I hope some of you might learn from my mistake. I wish HP would have just eliminated those old files from the Hewlett-Packard bundle of folders so I wouldn't have mistakenly assumed there was something wrong with the download. Oh well, live and learn.

Yet another Snow Leopard Upgrade Query
I've bought upgrades before, like Windoze XP from 2000 - and whenever I had to wipe a disk or have a disk go bad, reinstalling XP has always meant crawling up to the attic and hunting for the Win 2000 install disk in order to install from the XP upgrade disk.
Is the Snow Leopard upgrade on a blank disk (say a hard drive failure, or a giant gorilla breaks into my house with this huge degausser) going to require me to hunt down the old leopard install disc? I see nothing on the apple site regarding this, yet lots of chances to pre-order the disks. I have the 5 seat family pack edition of Leopard, so $49 vs. $229 is an attractive difference. What if I keep a copy of the original leopard disc, as my original is rather scratched - is that acceptable?
Also, since of only used 2 of my 5 leopard installs, does that mean I can still install Snow Leopard on a total of 5 machines (3 future ones)? While there are some discussions on this topic online
in other forums and blogs, some articles and a few
bits of gossip among a few facts, speculative dialog
is rather limited and the results unaccountable to fact.
The idea that someone could use a simple upgrade disc
if one should be available, and have it work to upgrade
all five computers running a previous version of OSX is
asking quite a bit; even if a new upgrade version may be
priced economically lower than previous OS X upgrades.
No way of knowing from our level, for sure, but there may
be an 'upgrade for the family pack' - you could try calling
Sales Support to see if they can find a part number for it
and you could ask & try to order that from Apple directly.
And pre-ordering has been happening, such as it is,
before the release date. There may be a part number
for a family-pack update; or a family-pack upgrade.
Defining the terms of any agreement, you have to always
defer to the legal and almost obvious wording in the
software, online or in paper copies of the documentation.
Since I own no hardware capable of supporting the latest
OS X version, my interests aren't too much involved to be
concerned about these aspects of it at this time; a new
computer or certified Apple Store special deal of the later
vintage hardware may be the most suitable upgrade.
Due to the lack of suitable hardware, I declined an offer to
do some beta testing of the latest OS X versions. A non-
disclosure agreement usually is enough to keep those who
know details quiet about them; honesty is more than paper.
In any event...
Good luck & happy computing! -
PS3 and Safari crashes after Snow Leopard upgrade
How is everyone enjoying the crashes after their Snow Leopard upgrade? I can't save a photo using PS3, or download a photo to flickr or facebook without a crash. PS3 crashes, Safari crashes and work flow is at a crawl? Spoke with tech yesterday and they told me that this would stop if I downloaded Snow Leopard again, which I did, but the problem wasn't resolved. To top it off, I lost permissions on the iMac and can't use the computer. Please tell me where all of the accolades came from? Were the reviews done by people who actually work on their computers or by people who play on them? Oh, and another thing, lost my wireless access to the router and had to start all over. Be careful here, this has not been fun!
Excuse me, I meant to write CS3 instead of PS3.

Update Flash after doing Snow Leopard upgrade
Just as an FYI: I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6 this morning. Before the upgrade I had the latest version of Flash (10,0,32,18). After the upgrade I had an earlier one--I don't remember which one exactly, but it was something like 10,0,23,? or so. You can check your Flash version here:
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
Anyway, be sure to update Flash after you do the Snow Leopard upgrade.Sounds like you've damaged your system by forcing it to quit and restart in the middle of installing. You probably also had something wrong with your machine that was interfering with the installation in the first place, as the Snow Leopard installer is ordinarily pretty good at failing without damaging anything if something causes it to fail.
I would advise [repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417]. If that fails, you'll need to erase and repartition the hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard from scratch. If repair works, but you still can't boot, you probably have corruption in important system files. You could try installing Snow Leopard over it at this point, while booted from the Snow Leopard disk. If repair shows no problems, post back here, as you've got something a little more exotic than simple hard disk damage going on.
Do you have a backup? If not, it's possible all your data might be gone at this point, depending on what exactly has gone wrong with your computer. You can try to back up from Disk Utility running from the Mac OS X install disk... see the Restore tab. You'll need an external hard drive to which to copy. -
Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade fail
Hello,
My disk utility to me that myt hard drive needed to be repaired so I decided to reformat it completely.
I also have a windows partition on the drive. After reinstalling Leopard I deleted the windows parition.
After this I started the Snow Leopard upgrade. Everything was going ok but when I went back to it the screen was dimmed so much that only a faint outline of the window can be seen. I have no idea what to do. It's been like this for over 2 hours.
Does anyone have any ideas?
TIA RoseIf you have an aluminium keyboard, does pressing F2 (brightness up) do anything?
Otherwise, since you've just blitzed the disk, it hardly matters if you power the machine down, boot off the Snow Leopard disk, use Disk Utility from the Tools menu to blank the partition again, and do the install.
Note that you don't need to install Leopard, you can just install Snow Leopard on the disk directly.
By the way, hard disk repairs are a normal part of life, you don't need to be so drastic as to reformat! Just boot off the appropriate install DVD and run Disk Utility from the Tools menu there, and choose Repair. -
Snow leopard upgrade no icons no anything!!!
hi hope you can help ,there is no icons on the desktop , there is no dock, there is no spotlight there is nothing when i boot into snow leopard , all my files are there and it boots to desktop normally in safe mode. but in normal mode nothing!! i tried repairing permissions and reinstalled the update again but nothing what do i need to do thanks. i up0dated with retail disk from tiger to sl thanks
As nobody has responded yet ... and you've tried a few of the default troubleshooting things.
Do you have a full backup of your system?
Prior to the snow leopard upgrade?
I don't have an immediate idea how to fix your normal user issue (besides permissions, which you did).
I see two avenues.
In safe mode, create a new user, disable auto-logon and then try to boot. It should give the log on screen. Log into that new user, see if the desktop populates and everything works. Then I'd do manual transfer of data and files from your old defective user. Time consuming and a bit delicate. But do-able.
Or - provided you have a full copy of your hard drive and data files - do what is called a clean install of Snow Leopard, erasing the hard drive, then let Snow Leopard install and when prompted use migration assistant to pull in your applications and data from the full backup drive.
If you have not done these procedures before, wouldn't hurt to read up a little.
Maybe a more experienced person can respond here with other thoughts.
Another option is to call Apple Support. If you just purchased Snow Leopard, it came with support.
Do you have extended AppleCare on the system, that could still be used?
Maybe make an appointment at the Apple Store and take your mini in?
