Lost sound, crackle, fade to nothing

30 GB was absolutely fine, out of blue started hearing a crackle, scratch, then sound faded out. Once in a while it will come back for very short periods (less than a minute) then do the same to nothing. Have done reset, does not help. Screen, selection, even counter works fine, no sound! Tested ear phones and bottom connector, no sound. Should I just take to apple dealer?

I have the exact same problem . . Crackling sound fading out to nothing. I sent it in to Apple and they sent it back saying they couldn't reproduce the problem. Well sure enough the problem was same as ever. It might play for a brief period of time then a crackle sound is heard (both R and L) and it quits completely. No sound at all. This happens both with earphones and when its in a dock. Ive tried it with several pairs of earphones and different docks, doesnt matter its the same thing. So, Ive sent it back to them AGAIN and hopefully they will fix the problem this time or else Ill be livid!

Hi Bob/Nicki4023, I have the same problem, it lost sound completely, but the mute switch is off. The switch seems to be working since it visibly turns to mute when applied. Music visibly starts playing but no sound is emitted, and the volume slider is not shown unless I plug in the headphones, then the volume buttons start working again and the sound returns but when I unplug the headphones it turns mute again. The same happens when playing a video, videos that played normally yesterday today seem like no sound was recorded. Apps i.e. games don't emit any sound although not set up on mute. The ringtone sounds when receiving a call but the rest of notifications would just vibrate even having a programmed sound. I'm starting to think this might be a virus... Please help

Help I have lost sound

I have lost sound on loud speaker, ipad2 says I am on headphones when I am not. Testing ringer comes through speakers but nothing else. I am not muted nor are notifications. Complete novice on iPad. help

Do NOT reset anything in your settings. Try the reset this way.
Reset (holding Home and Sleep/Wake until Apple logo appears, then releasing and letting normal reboot continue).
In the event that you did miss something in the system sounds settings, this may help you to better understand how they work.
If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

Ipad 3 updated on IOs 8.0.2 lost sound

I updated my Ipad3 on IOs 8.0.2 and I lost sound. The sound button does not work, it is not on mute. Sound only work with headphone. I tried resetting it 2 time but nothing changed, still no sound.

Lost sound, uninstalled sound card (forum advice) now what?

I lost sound on my system and automatic driver repair did nothing, another forum said to uninstall the sound card and reinstall. I uninstalled and now what? where do i find the card to reinstall. the card is IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.
Also having trouble installing updates, constantly get the error message 80070BC9

Here is the Software and drivers page for the computer. The only driver that is available for the sound card is for Win 8.0. Therefore, you should use the original driver. You can have the program scan you system to find the appropriate driver, also. Click on "Check now" and install the additional software. Then, follow the instructions and the program will scan your computer for driver updates or for missing drivers.

K8N Neo4 Platinum - Lost Sound

I have a K8N Neo4 Platinum mobo and recently I have suddenly lost sound in both OS's. I am running XP64 and Fedora Core 4/64. Primarily I work in the Linux OS. I noticed that the sound was gone the other day while editing in Kino. I have had power outages recently while on. I am stumped why I am not getting any sound in either OS. The speakers "pop" on on boot up and "pop" off on shut down, but nothing in between. Tried different speakers, no luck. Everywhere I look, the onboard sound appears to be recognized and has no problems, but nothing is getting out of the speakers. Any help?

you may have a try to uninstall the audio drivers and reinstall the audio driver here.
You may also check the software player you are using.

Importing to I-Movie - lost sound AND video

I have a feeling this has already been answered but here goes:
I recorded some video on my Sony still camera in MPEG format (.mpg files). They worked fine in I-photo. When I imported them into Imovie though, I not only lost sound but it would seem vision. They are now .mov files but don't play?
The scroller moves, but the picture doesn't change, it just zooms in on the first frame (like a slide show) and there's no sound.
I am not very techie, and new to Macs. Can anyone please tell me how to solve this, and have I lost the content on the files I transferred into IMovie?
I transferred them into Imovie so I could compress them for web use on my blog.
I have already downloaded Streamclip in case I need that, though I don't know if I have to open/mount/unzip it or anything like that.

Right, since we spoke I met a guy who said:
Streamclip WILL be enough for me and it will work. He said my camera will be using MPEG-1 and so I will be fine. If I had an MPEG-2 (professional?) camera it would be more complex and I would need to buy that Apple component.
So I downloaded it. The next step will be learning how to use it! That's going to be a whole different ballgame. If you have any links to an easy step-by-step guide, that would be awesome? RE the external drive, I'm downloading my MPEG's via USB cable onto the hard drive before I do anything at all.

TS3212 something is wrong with my itunes, none of my 4 ipod devices show up when i try to connect them to itunes. but they do light up and show that they are charging, and two have lost sound...

ok, so two of my devices have lost sound the first was about 2 years ago, but i kept the device because i could still use it for other things, then i got a " new to me" ipod about 6 months ago, and it too has, within the last two days, lost sound, and while trouble shooting these issues i have been trying to restart/refresh/whatever one of them and now none of the 4 devices that i have is shouing up on my itunes!!! this is verry upsetting since the others didnt have any problems, and i really dont want to pay $ for a fix. do not have the money for that, nor do i expect this kind of thing to happen to me more thann once.
i have gone through all the diagnostic tests with my computer and each ipod multiple times, even trying to reverse the order in which i perform the steps, as a last resort, making no progress. i have downloaded new versions of itunes 5 times within the last 3 hours and restarted my computer 7 times. my devices do not show up in "my computer" but they do display as charging when i plug them into the usb port, and to wrap up i have tried using all 3 usb ports on my computer to do this.
please do not post that i should restart my computer or that i need to restart my device! please do not tell me to go to an apple store or buy a new device! but all other help/ ideas will be greatly appriciated.

Running Windows 7(32) on MBA - sound crackling, stuttering

I did a search on this and found some posts from other users (see below)but no solution. I have upgraded the driver to 6.0.1.6235, I have installed the recent update of Bootcamp (3.2.2646), but the issue remains. Sounds playing in different applications are effected, though it seems to be more frequent when playing locally stored content (buffering??)
When running in MacOS 10.6, the sound works perfectly. Have anyone managed to solve this? Or, perhaps someone NOT having this issue could get in touch, so I could try to replicate your settings/drivers.

I have a 09 MacBook Air with 128GB SSD and 2GB RAM.
Now, I have installed Windows 7 RTM Build 7600 on my MBA and it always suffer sound crackling, shuttering when playing music ...) but with all of them problem is still not resolved. It stutters, scratches, sounds metallic, etc.
Does anyone have the same issue on the new MacBook Air? Or how I can get this resolved

I had the same problems but now I’m running win 7 on boot camp instead of parallels and I have no sound at all. The head phone jack has a ominous red light emanating out of it as well! HELP!!!!

I have the same problem, and also tried several drivers from Realtek Website.
Also updated bootcamp to 3.1 but problem still exists!!
At the beginning i thought it might be HW related problem, but sound works flawlessly on MAC OS.
Any advice?

I don't think this is a hardware issue and here is why:
I have a Rev A MBA (1.8ghz, 64gbSSD) purchased in Feb 2008. Ive run OSX 10.5 Leopard for a year, and Win7 x64 Beta since Feb 09, Win 7 x64 RTM since August 09.
Just this week, I reinstalled Windows 7 x64 fully legit version. I installed the OS as my only OS, and installed Bootcamp 3.0 and then 3.1.
Ive NEVER had this stuttering problem until now. I was running Bootcamp 2 under Windows 7 before and didnt have any problems with stuttering audio.
My current version of Realtek drivers is 6.0.1.5936
I really think this issue is caused by the Realtek Driver and/or Bootcamp 3.0/3.1

The Retrospect you used way back when is no longer around. The company was sold and that company produced a new version of Retrospect - Retrospect 8.x
So, as you've been told, you would have to be running a Tiger system with an old version of Retrospect software (5.x or 6.x - you would need to know) assuming you can find the software.
As best I can remember you cannot extract files from a Retrospect backup except using the software since Retrospect did not normally make a file by file backup rather it created an archive of the files in the backup. I'm assuming that the EMC/Retrospect people have told you that old Retrospect backups are not accessible by Retrospect 8.x?

Equium L40 - Lost sound in the headphone jack

Hi, Hoping someone can help.
My current sound driver is Soundmax Integrated Digital HD Audio. And from what I remember has always been. I've downloaded it a few times from the Toshiba site for my computer and it always comes back to this driver.
The problem I have is that somewhere along the line it has lost sound in the headphone jack. I can no longer tell if i have a hardware problem or if the jack is broken. I now have Windows 7 installed but the problem was there when I had the original Vista program installed.
A few things my system tells me(Don't know if it helps)
Location 0 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus)
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ADIHdAud.sys
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\drmk.sys
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\portcls.sys
If i can't fix this because it is the jack can anyone tell me of another line for sound out I could use please? possibly USB.

Can you hear sound via internal speakers?
That means the problem only is the headphone jacket?!
I think if the internal speakers work but no external speakers or headphone it seems to be a hardware issue. Have you also checked the Windows sound settings for audio output port?
In worst case you need professional help from an authorized service provider. Here you can find a list of them:
