Lost speed again

I've recently had my noise margin reset which returned my connection speed back to normal. I had not noticed any issues with my broadband connection prior to me being profiled. Over the last few days though my connection has been dropping a lot,  sometimes 3 or 4 times an hour.  This has obviously resulted in my connection speed dropping away and now it is fluctuating between just over 1000Kbps and 2500Kbps. The longest ive seen my connection time over the last few  days is about 3.5 hours.
What can cause this? My line might have some low level noise but it's constant and smooth not crackling. I don't actually know if it is noisy or if that is what it should sound like.
Should i be starting my request for support here or on the phone to bt?

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

    Hello bbryson68, I'm sure you've just over-looked it.
The answer is to click on Adjust above the Clip in Viewer, this will bring into view a adjustments bar also above the Clip.
Now you just have to select the speed via the Turtle icon. Once the clip has been speed-up or down, you'll get a Slider
over the clip in question & a Rabbit icon indicating the clip has been speed-up.
If you want to  keep audio undistorted check the Preserve Pitch checkbox above the viewer.
The Clip Slider & icon of Rabbit appear in the Clip-Trimer window below the main Clip, also check your Pref's to see if you have
Apply Slow Motion checked? This will slow or speed up all other clips to the first clip.

  • Slow speeds (again)

On the infinity 2 package; would usually get around the 75mb advertised but recently i'm lucky to get 40.
Tried using the online chat assistance and they disconnect everytime, shocking poor and not acceptable. Then they tell me to ring up the infinity helpline and then disconnect again!
Great customer service you guys have going there.
Anyway wheres the 35mb gone too? Should be getting 20mb upload speed, I get roughly 8...
Stop prancing around advertising Bt Sport and actually bother to deal with customers.

    It's  rubbish.
down: 71.44 <- first time in weeks its been this high
    up:11.98 <- was getting 20 previously
ping: 352.75 <--- no idea if this is good or not..
I've been trying since day one to do speed tests on the wholesale page.
Every single time I have tried to run the diagnostic test I get this message
"No Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) services have been found at this address. Please check the postcode or use the Telephone Number or Service ID to conduct the test.

  • Infinity 2 80/20 connection has lost speed

Had my connection for about a month. After installation I was getting a solid 5 to 7 MB /sec download speeds. However, for the last 2 weeks I haven't gotten better than 2.5 MB/sec. My IP profile is nice and high and resetting or restarting the HH3 doesn't help. Also changing router port or connecting wirelessly or wired makes no difference. Tried from 3 PC's on my network, all the same. Upload speed is actually better than the test shows however.....!

  • Help, I've lost Help (again)

    Hello
I'm sorry, I've posted this question before, but seem to have lost the replies now these Discussion Boards have been redesigned (very nice Apple, thanks).
Basically when I launch Help in Finder, nothing happens. A window opens with nothing in it.
Does anyone have the link which tells me which files I need to delete to bring it back again? I've tried seaching the Forum but aren't getting anywhere. And if you can tell me how to stop it happening regularly, then even better :-))
    Thanks in advance.

    2. Trash the /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder.
In some cases, apparently the OS will complain that this folder is in use & won't let you trash it, even if Help Viewer isn't running. If so, try renaming it instead, to "com.apple.old.helpui" for example. After log out or restart a replacement will be created & then you can trash the old one.
I have no idea why this works when the straight-to-trash method doesn't, but it is the Apple-suggested remedy for Help Viewer problems of this nature.

    Hello
My speed has dropped again to a pitiful level. This is an ongoing issue from before christmas and its getting to the stage were i am looking to end my contract with bt, the service is not fit for purpose. I live 3 miles from a town that gets bt infinity and the top speed i am supposed to receive is 1.5 mpbs which is terrible, but this hasnt happened for 4 weeks now, its around 0.50-0.75 mpbs which is useless. Here is my speedtest

  • DROPPED SPEED AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN !

Ever since joining BT 5 months ago -i have a stable connection of 2400 for 6 wweeks then it drops and drops down to 950 !!!!!
I ring ,compalin -they tell me there is a fault on the line and eventually it goes back up to 2400 -YET AGAIN it has now dropped again for the last week to 1400 !!!!
I am so sick of this its unbelievable !
Why is it never stable for more than a few weeks !??????

Tried the next link and it wants ti install and uninstall something on my computer ! Java, thats required to run most things on the internet, not just the BT Speedtester
I have used several speed tests on line -cnet, mybb speed and uk bb test -all are giving the speeds of 1886 -1900 kbps. - Your throughput
I got called today from Newcastle after emailing them  ( after someone yet again in India told me their was a fault on the line- this WAS NOT TRUE-WHY DO THEY ALL LIE !???) - India what do you expect?
The guy told me there was no fault on the line and it was reading 2500mbps - this is just not true ! - He was probably referring to your sync speed, and your IP profile will most likely be 2000kbps which is why your speed acheived on the speed test is only that.
Why are 4-5 different speed tests telling me exactly the same -yet BT tells me different ?? As above the adviser was probably referring to your sync speed which is different from the speed achieved.
I have no extension leads and a new socket with built in filter was fitted only 6-8 weeks ago . Good.
I do not have a corded phone either . Not to worry for now
I am so sick of all this and wish i had never joined and will be leaving asap ! Fine, but if you can't give us a chance you're likely to have the same problems with other ISPs, who if don't have the exchange unbundled will be using the same equiptment as BT
rang the number and all it kept doing is repeating quiet line test for 10 mins -gave up after that as no idea what its supposed to achieve!!!!!!!!??????? - Its suppost to let you hear a quiet line.

  • Lost music again!!!

    Hi All,
Right I have managed to find the apporiate Quicktime (without an upgrade) and now have itunes working again.
However, my music is gone of course
When I store - available downloads, nothing happens, when i plug in my iphone, no music copies back now i do have a back up of some of my purchases, however the more recent stuff I have purchased hasnt downloaded, i think my mac is causing me too many problems now a days and almost feels like a PC.
I am tempted to just go back to a PC.
Grrr.... Any suggestions please anything.  Thanks

    Hi Sarah34 -
You're NOT alone.  The same thing happens to me routinely.  I may not be able to specifically solve your problem, but I can tell you what I've learned:
    1.  You can't just move files with "Finder" in iTunes like you do with other data elsewhere on your machine.  iTunes is a database unto itself, and if you ever change the directory structure or file location with Finder, then iTunes is "lost" and can't find its files.  The good news is that your music isn't actually "gone," it's still on your drive but iTunes just can't see it.
    2.  Any change you want in iTunes should be made from within iTunes.  That way, the iTunes database knows where the music is.
    3.  The way that most people fix your problem is to open the iTunes preferences panel and then go to the "Advanced" tab.  There is where you'll find the path where iTunes expects to find your media.  Correct that path and iTunes should find your media again.
    4.  I agree with you wholeheartedly that iTunes feels more like a PC than any other part of the Mac experience.  Hopefully iTunes 11, which is supposed to release in the next few days, will fix that.
If you keep having problems, you can call AppleCare or you can make a free appointment at your local "Genius Bar" where they have a fairly good track record of being able to not only fix problems like yours but also of being able to explain to you why it happened in the first place.
    Good luck!

  • Lost identity, again...

This has happened so often that I lost count, but again my user name is messed up in the Premiere Pro forums.
My user name now looks like: Harm Millaard-qz01ws. My profile is messed up as well and my picture disappeared. It always happens during weekends  and resetting it to normal will usually only be accomplished by tuesday after I have complained.
Often this also means that counters are reset as well and that the new messages on a forum now include everything that I have already read.
When can you get rid of this Jive crap. It is bad that your servers are down so often and cause serious delays and posting problems, but this forum software is so crappy , one can almost say the only reliable thing about it is that it causes problems with fantastic reliabilty. Not something to be proud of. Maybe you ought to have a look at the forum software used in your own pre-release community.

Sometimes it just fixes itself. I was away over the weekend and cannot take any credit for fixing it.
We are not sure we believe you, John. You have said that a number of times now, first to me more than a year ago. That excuse is becoming a bit threadbare.

  • Experiencing Extremely Slow Upload / Download Speeds AGAIN - Bradenton, FL

Experiencing very slow internet speeds for the last few days in Bradenton, FL area (4 Mbps / 4 Mbps). The exact same issue occurred approximately 2 months ago and took over two weeks to resolve. Turns out it was an area wide equipment problem that Verizon wouldn't address until they received a sufficient number of customer complaints. Very frustrating. Paying for sub-standard service. Looking to switch to Brighthouse in the New Year as this appears to be a never ending problem.

Here we are, 9 months later and I am AGAIN experiencing slow internet speeds. I am paying for fios speeds of up to 50/35 but am seeing 5/15 instead. This problem keeps recurring time and time again. Tech support refuses to do anything because I can get normal speeds to my nearest hub, but ANY hub beyond that is useless. When I do speed tests using other methods, I show slow speeds. I was on the phone with tech support for 2 hours only to be told that all the network technicians and gone home.
This problem crops up every so often. Tech support will not address the issue until a sufficient number of customers call in to complain. Each time the problem is finally solved weeks later and was due to some sort of equipment failure on Verizon's end.
Speedtest.net testing out of Ft. Myers is giving me 5.84 Mbps down and 14.87 Mbps up.
Speakeasy.net testing out of Atlanta is giving me 11.45 Mbps down and 23.54 Mbps up.
In the past I my router has been replaced and I have been told that the problem is with all of my computers. Hmmmm... I pay over $200 per month for fios service which includes tv and digital phone. I recently renewed my contract for 2 years thinking that this problem would not come back but it has for the THIRD time in one year. I have a 30 day money back guarantee with no penalty if I cancel my contract. At this point, I am so frustrated that I will be calling Verizon to cancel my service effective the end of the month.

  • Very Slow Broadband speed again

Can some-one on the forum help .. yet again my speed has dropped from almost 16mb to 2.5mb...this is since Christmas and infinity to this area ( which cant have).. i live about 600 yards in cable length from the Exchange...( BT employee ex engineer.. so know how the cables run). this speed is ridiculous.. My BT Home worker Broadband which is capped at 8mb always achieves 6-7mb so why is my other broadband so bad. Its not the PC and i have stripped down all the extensions and just had the router coming di9rectly off of the first point in my house and it is still very slow....

  • I am having trouble with my Mac Mini's ethernet connection.   Defining a new network interface shows no ethernet adaptor.  Reloading SL from DVD repaired.  But SL update lost ethernet again.  Will Lion Fix?

I am having trouble with my mac mini ethernet.  It had been working for weeks after an update to SL 10.6.8.
Once it went out and i repaired it by defining a new connection from System Preferences ->Network->(left panel service, +).
But yesterday, after a power up.  my ethernet was not working again. I tried this old trick to repair it, but the interface choices
listed for '+' a new service did not include Ethernet any more.  And the Utilities->System Profiler->Ethernet Cards shows
    no ethernet available.
As a last ditch effort i reloaded my original SL from DVD.  (I think it was version 10.6.4 but i could be mistaken on the version).
The ethernet worked!  But KeyNote wasn't going to work because apparently the version i purchased depends on 10.6.8.
So I upgraded again to SL 10.6.8 (Plus some other updates like AirPort which i don't use).
Now the Ethernet is not working again.  I see the same symptoms as before with the Ethernet seeming not installed.
Is this a problem seen by others?
Would going to Lion fix the problem?
Could AirPort actually be the culprit and not SL?
If i stay with my original SL, would i need to repurchase a version of KeyNote for the older version of SL?

    Have you reset the SMC?
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
While you're at it, resetting the PRAM won't hurt anything and 'might' help is SMC reset didn't work (PRAM does some port control):
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Something else you might try .... you don't say how you're updating to 10.6.8, however, if you're using Software Update, you might try downloading the 10.6.8 combo update, which contains all updates to 10.6. Sometimes, Software Update doesn't work quite right, and installing the combo update fixes that. Download the update from Apple's download site at http://support.apple.com/downloads/ , using Disk Utility repair permissions, apply the combo update, then repair permissions again.

Many months ago, I suffered a drastic reduction in BB speed.  Please can you help?  According to BT website, I should get BB download speed of 12.0 to 14.5 Mb/s but since September this has been around 9 Mb/s.  On 19 December 2012, the speed suddenly dropped to 6655/828 and here is my current data from the Hub 2.0:

As you can see, the noise ratio which is usually in the 14-15 dB area has jumped to over 20 dB!
Please don't tell me that this is due to the Hub being reset too often.  Only time I switched off the Hub was to move it to the BT box in the hallway.  It resets itself frequently enough with no help from me.  Today it has reset itself three times in 8 minutes during the past hour!!
I have moved my Hub from upstairs at the end of a 15-metre extension to the BT box in our hallway where it enters the house.  No improvement whatever.  I have an I-Plate fitted.
I connected my laptop to the Hub by ethernet and got the results:
Max possible speed 7.15Mb/s; actual speed 5.87 Mb/s download.  Sorry I can't show the image but the desktop I am using is connected by wireless and the BT Speedtester doesn't want me to connect wirelessly - why not?
Can someone please reset the noise margin to something like the 6.0 dB that is the BT standard as that will undoubtedly speed up my connection?  And should I just dump the Hub 2.0 and buy a router which delivers?  And when will this lonely bit of Birmingham be getting Infinity?  Every other exchange around me has Infinity buty good old Acocks Green still operates steam-powered Broadband!!
    Help, please!
    Solved!

To cut a long story short, I have had my BT Hub 2.0 replaced with a BT Hub 3 and a BT engineer has replaced my BT Box.  All is now working satisfactorily and I am getting around 12 Mbps download/.70 Mbps upload.  My line profile is 15.01/0.83 and here are the current Hub stats:

  • Audio Reconnect Mismatch with Moved Project a.k.a Lost Sleep Again in Post.

Hello. Thought this might be helpful regarding reconnecting media and leads to a major problem with FCP (from my view) in how the software designates things. I hope this saves headaches for another who might run up against the same problem.
    Situation:
I am currently helping out on an hour-long documentary project with another editor. As such, I have been given a copy of the media on a FW drive and the project itself. The other editor’s original media resides on a RAID system so “Reconnect Media” is necessary to cut some of the acts. The video project media has been captured with a Blackmagic card and converted to edit in it’s native 23.976 in DV formatted (offline) files. However, this has no bearing on the audio files as we will see...
    Problem:
I have opened the project and of course the Reconnect Media menu comes up immediately (as expected) asking me to re-link the media. The Video portions link up fine and play out correctly. Now there are also imported aiff voice-over files and music which resided in the project bins which need to be re-linked for the sequences to play out correctly.
If try to reconnect them I get a “File Attribute Mismatch: Media Start and End” error. If I choose to continue, it changes the time code Media Start, End and Duration of the files in the project. Obviously this will not do since it throws off the sequences and any editing I do when sent back to the other editor for conform. Audio files have no TC designation (QT shows N/A Frame rate) as far as I know. After trying out a few things I changed my Easy Setup to NTSC 23.98. After doing that, I could import the file.
(NOTE: This is not an issue with the Video/Audio files which will maintain their TC Base Rate no matter what type of project they are imported into, no matter what my Easy setup is.)
To make things worse, let’s say I have been initially working in a PAL project (for example) initially and have imported the audio V.O. files and make a sound edit for the some U.K. client to review (or something). The TC Base time code will be designated 25 since we have a different project frame rate. Then, I go to work on the other project. I now cannot re-link the files since there is a mismatch. Even the workaround does not work. I am seemingly screwed. The next workaround is to be to close the PAL project or I cannot correctly open the V.O. material in the other project. Even if I delete the V.O. clips references in the PAL project, as long as it is open it screws up the re-connect in the other.
I could lay the audio to tape or convert to something that has T.C. before import but I cannot expect every editor or project group I work with to do this. I'm just a freelancer.
    Final Comments of Frustration...
I truly wish FCP had a more descriptive import tab when reconnecting data allowing the user more understanding of the process and control. As it stands now, it is very frustrating, potentially causing a world of hurt when projects are being handled my multiple editors on different machines which may have various setups designated. I can only wonder if this would FUBAR shared media projects. Fixing the skip feature would be nice too (highlight multiple files and skip function please instead of skip click, click, click, beach ball etc.).

Thanks Tom for your input. That is an interesting solution and helps get it sorted out for the project.
However, I would have thought that an existing project (and its existing clips) would override a project preset. My inital thought was I had been given a different versioning of the audio. I telephoned the other editor and according to him, nothing had changed in the project or the media. It was difficult to track down the problem.
I only marked it as helpful (sorry) since this seems more of a workaround for a design flaw in the FCP software. Apple should consider creating a more thorough dialogue box in the re-connect process that would shed more light on the conflict between offline clip and media. In the FCP manual, it states there is a potential of frame rate mismatches but with audio this isn't the case. It should take into account the audio TC rate that was designated originally to the clip (I would think) and warn of a project setup conflict.
Anyways, thanks again. Your expertise is great in your books and on the forums. Now I can get back to editing.
