Lost start up disk

I have an older iMac which runs OS X.6- it isn't able to load any newer software. I'm giving it away but want to erase my Hard Drive but do not have the startup disk. Is there anything I can do? Thanks.

Phone AppleCare and order replacement original disks, or if it originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.2 or earlier, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store.

  • If I can't find the start up disks, is there anyway to get iWork back after installing a new hard drive?

I had to install a new hard drive because my orginal one crashed. When I bought my macbook, iWork came pre-installed. Now with a new hard drive I would like iWork back on my computer, but can't find the start up disks, assuming I'd be able to do it that way. Is there anyway I can contact Apple and have them give me the iWork software?
(Overall, very upset about this since my macbook is only 2 years old and I lost everything. A friend of mine has been working on it for 3 weeks trying to recover some data.)

    - Did you restore from a backup that contained the photos?
    - The backup only contains photos in the iPod's Camera Roll album. It does not included photos synced to the iPod.
    - All you can do is try restoring from backup again.

  • I have a G5 imac that is using Disk Warrior as the start up disk and can't change back.

I am using a G5 imac (OS 10.4.8 I think the last update is) and I was attempting to use Disk Warrior to recover a lost file. On my other Macs you made Disk Warrior the start up disk to use it, which I did here but I think that was a mistake. Now I can't change back to the regular start up disk.
I tried starting in safe mode but I think I'm getting kernel panic because it goes to a gray screen and tells me to restart.

I don't think Disk Warrior does file recovery. See:
    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

Sounds like your data crashing out palm desktop.
It's either your calendar or contacts causing the issue.
    Steps to fix
    1. Navigate to C:/program files/palm/Hotsync ID
    2. In that folder locate another folder called datebook
    3. Remove datebook.dat file from there and place on desktop
    4. Go to folder called Address
    5. Remove address.dat file from there and place on desktop
    6. Attempt to open palm desktop
    IF it opens continue
    7. Go to tools/options and change the start up application from datebook to memos
    8. Navigate to C:/program files/palm/Hotsync ID
    9. In that folder locate another folder called datebook
    10. Grab the datebook.dat file off of the desktop and place in the folder
    11. Choose to overwrite the file
    12. Go to folder called Address
    13. Grab the address.dat file off of the desktop and place in the folder
    14. Choose to overwrite the file
    15. Relaunch palm desktop
    16. Go to tools/options/tools
    17. Select fix corrupted records.
    18. Close palm desktop re open
Everything should work fine. If you want you can then change the start up application back to datebook.

  • I lost my original disk for photoshop 7... I need to update.. it won't let me.. and keeps asking for the disk.. even though the program is on my pc... How can i get my update?

I have photoshop 7 on my pc but have lost my original disk.... I went to update it and  the update is not seeing the file on my pc... and it keeps asking for my disk.. but i can't find it...
    How can i update it...

Ah, you had Photoshop 7.0 working, and now it's not.  I see that as a separate issue to updating it.  I'm not sure why it would ask you to update it.
Do you know whether you have 7.0 or 7.0.1 at this point?  You might be able to do a Properties function on Photoshp.exe and see that info.
You could make an attempt to reset Photoshop's preferences to defaults.  Press and hold Control - Shift - Alt simultaneously immediately upon cold-starting Photoshop. If you get the keys down quickly enough - and you have to be really quick - it will prompt you to confirm deletion of your current preferences, which will lead to the establishment of a fresh default set.  If it does not prompt you, you haven't been quick enough to get the keys down.
Only other thing that comes to mind is to use Windows System Restore to restore back to a restore point where Photoshop was working, or restore from a backup (you do make backups I hope).
If that fails, and you need to do a fresh install but no longer have the original disk and serial number I'm afraid you may be out of luck.  There's no place I know of from which to download a fresh full copy of Photoshop 7.0.

  • I lost my OS disks for MBP 4,1

Hi, I lost my OS disks for our MBP 4,1. I keep reading that you should call and get replacement disks for a fee, but other than that, will buying a Snow Leopard DVD work? I just want to erase and reinstall a fresh copy of the OS coz right now the HD is already full of trash... Thanks.

As sig says. In addition, the original discs may have bundled software that won't be on the retail disc, plus perhaps software for testing computer hadrware components (I have an older computer so I am going by that).
You say the hard drive is full of trash and you want to re-install the system because of that.  I am not sure that is necessarily the approach to take.  I haven't re-installed the system on my computer since 2005 so unless you are taking the clear-cut approach and wiping the drive and starting afresh, I think there are better ways.

  • Getting a replacement start up disk for imac

How to get a replacement start up disk for my imac?
I lost the original startup disk and the mac didn't start up, only with "?" folder.

Call Apple technical support. They can probably sell you a new set of the original disks for a reasonable fee, if your iMac did come with installation disks (Macs that shipped with OS X 10.7 or 10.8 did not come with disks).
    Regards.

  • My macbook air said start up disk almost full then died and wont start up again

i got a message saying start up disk was almost full so i deleted a load of stuff.  i thought this would solve it but the next time i turned it on all i got was the apple logo and a wheel going round and round.  Apple have now told me that when the disk gets full it doesnt read the start up data correctly and thats why it wont switch on.  I have lost everything on the machine and am going to have it rebuilt.  Has anyone else had this problem following the java script update that added a huge number of files to the hard drive

  • My start up disk is full and the now the mac will not start

How do I get on my computer when my start up disk is full?

If you don't have a recent backup, then all your files will be lost.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

How can I delete files from it?

The startup disk is the internal SSD in your MBA.  You may delete files by draging the file  to Trash (or clicking on them and then execute COMMAND+Delete).  Then empty Trash.
