Lost system administrator password

I've lost the password for account "System Administrator".
How can I reset the "S A" account password?  Googling finds ways to reset root or non-admin passwords, but no mention of the account called System Administrator.
I have root / root password.  I tried booting from the install disk and using reset password, but the list of accounts it brings up does not include System Administrator.  (Well there is one called S A, but it also says "root" and the online tips say do not reset this since it really is root.)
Since I have root access, it isn't truly critical to get the SA password, but it would be nice.
Any suggestions?

Well, here's what confuses me.  Per this site (and others), when using install disk to do "Reset Password", I am really resetting the root password.  But there's a "System Administrator" entry in my account list, and the implication is that this is not the root account.

Are these descriptions wrong?  I know the root password, and using that when trying to login using the "S..A.." acount doesn't work.  The web page is 4 years old - is it out of date?

  • What can I do I Lost system administrator name and password

I have used Leopard reinstall disc to reset password but when I want to make changes ie download software etc I am prompted for system Administrators name and password. My ex set up the computer I may have known the password/name but have forgotten it.

Thanks tried that again. There does not seem to be an administrator account, except for (root) option which I get on using start up as above. I use "my account" to log in but do not have admin access only standard. Neither my account nor other accounts (2) one standard one sharing only have admin allowance. Previously tried changing System Administrator (root) and resetting and resetting keychain which achieved nothing. Problem seems to be there is no system administrator among the accounts set up. There used to be. Any suggestions pls.

  • System administrator passwords??

I guess I am very unqualified to have a MAc but I do.  My son set it up and now I am looking at info for downloading an app (Facetime) and it wants a system administrators password. I gave it the only one I know of and it does not work. Is the SAP the same as my apple ID? or am I really stupid  (I know I am but anyway,) a little patient help would be appreciated. Like do I need to reinstall my discs and all (won't I lose stuff like pictures etc in Iphoto?). and I want to set parental blocks on my computer too. ANy help (without snickering if possible would be appreciated:). Thanks in advance.

It would be easier to ask your son for the password, but if you have your Mac's original System Install DVD you can reset your password with the following procedure:
With its original System Install DVD in the optical drive, restart your Mac while holding the c key. Wait until the Mac OS X Utilities screen appears.
From the menu bar at the top, select Utilities > Terminal.
In the Terminal window type resetpassword and press Enter. A window will open behind Terminal that looks like this
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD" in the above screenshot), choose your user account from the dropdown selection, enter a new password, complete the password hint field, and click Save.
You may then see a confirmation dialog explaining how this change affects Keychain Access and what to do about it. Remember it or write it down, then click OK.
    Quit Reset Password
    Quit Terminal
Quit OS X Utilities and restart your Mac.
To fix your Keychain problems, go to your Utilities folder and open Keychain Access. Follow the steps here: Mac OS X: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password.

It doesn't have to be, and it probably is not.

  • Lost my administration password. What can I do ?

    Hello,
I have a new IBook since Christmas. I did choose an administrative password, but it seems I typed it wrong : I cannot find it any more. I'm surprised because the hint question I left is very clear, but well, I guess it can happen. Of course, I tried all the ortograph versions I could think of and none works.
    How can I re-initiate this password ?
    Thanks in advance
    Lise

    Hi
    Thanks for your answer !
I checked on the article and selected the 'change administration password' paragraph. I followed the instructions, but it seems the CD does not launch itself automatically as it should. What should I do ? I did not have to install the OS the first time, it was already installed.
I also checked if it was an AZERTY/QWERTY keyboard problem but it's not. I also tried any variations that came into my mind with the Shift button on and off but it does not work.

    <pre class=command>mkpassdb -setpassword <slot ID>
    # where Slot-ID is second value of AuthenticationAuthority in users LDAP entry</pre>see man mkpassdb
mkpassdb actually is for directly manipulation of PasswordServer.
    You will probably need:

  • Lost/forgotten administrator password

I have just bought a new imac and given my old one to my son. He reinstalled Leopard and has got everything up and running but whenever it asks for the administrator name and password it doesn't accept anything we put in.
We have tried my old name and password from before I gave it to him and we have tried his name and password from the account he has set up - which doesn't seem to be an administrator account. He is adamant that he hasn't changed any other passwords or anything but we don't know what to do now. If we try and re-install Leopard again it asks for the administrator name and password !
Is there anything we are missing like a start up default name and password (we have tried 'admin' and 'admin' or failing that do we have to reformat the whole thing and rebuild it from scratch?
    Any thoughts welcome.
    Thanks
    David

Now that's exceedingly weird, A computer that won't start up from the install disk. Cobbyco, after trying Monty's suggestion, putting the install dvd in, turning the computer off, waiting a few seconds, then holding down the C key and pressing the power button, are you continuing to hold down the C key or letting go right away? I usually continue to hold down the c key at least til the screen lights up, that way I'm sure the install disk is the one starting the computer up. The more knowledgeable folks who have replied may think that's unnecessary, to hold the c key down that long, but it's just my own habit. Try it, might work for you too.

  • How to stop system administrator password requirement

I downloaded a program on Vista. When I went to uninstall it, it said I was not the administrator. So, when I research that, I input a password. I tried restore and looking for solution, but no luck. The info said for administrator, you need at least one user. I did that, then later deleted the user, but still on as administrator.

Try to ask advice at a Windows oriented forum.

  • System Administrator Password Reset Q after Upgrade eMac

I recently upgraded my Moms eMac from 40GB to 80GB. It took me about one hour and I booted it up. The drive was from my broken eMac. I am trying to update some of the software (Apple Download) and it will not allow me to do any changes. I keep getting an error to enter a admin name and password. I never set up a password on any of my machines, how do I reset it? I already tried putting in the OS disk 1, choosing reset password and still the same error message.
    The message reads...
Type an administrators name and password to allow DiskManagementTool to make changes. Then there is a field for Name and Password. I don't know what password it would be since I always leave it blank.
    Any ideas? thanks!

You always need to enter an admin username, but if there is no password you can leave the field blank.
