Lost system disks - help!

I have a G4 at work that was running 9.2.2 and recently the hard drive died. My system disks have been 'borrowed' and not returned by someone so IT Support have tried installing 9.1 disks from an earlier Power Mac onto the new hard drive but that doesn't work. They also think a generic 9.2.1 disk won't work either. Is that right and if so how can I get hold of the right disks? Thanks!
G4 Mirrored drive doors   Mac OS 9.2.x

Hi, Neet -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
... IT Support have tried installing 9.1 disks from an earlier Power Mac onto the new hard drive but that doesn't work. They also think a generic 9.2.1 disk won't work either.
Is that right and if so how can I get hold of the right disks?
If the G4 in question is a Mirrored Drive Door (MDD) model, then yes, that's correct.
The original disks that came with the machine installed a model-specific version of OS 9.2.2. No earlier version will install - and there are no retail (universal) OS 9.2.2 Install CDs.
The only source for a bootable OS 9 install for those models is from the original disks that came with the machine. You may be able to get replacement original disk by contacting Apple's Customer Support -
http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
<hr>
If you need OS 9 solely for use as Classic under OSX, there are other possibilities -
• copy a working OS 9 System Folder from another machine (OS 9.1 or later; OS 9.2.x would be better).
• copy the System Folder from an OS 9.2.1 Install CD. Note, though, that there are very few control panels and extensions in the System Folder on an OS 9 Install CD; many services will not be available.
OS 9 System Folders retain their integrity and functionality when copied using a simple Finder copy process (drag and drop) - cloning is not necessary.
However, neither of those two options will result in a bootable OS 9. If you need a bootable OS 9.2.2, you will need to use an original disk set for that model.

  • Lost system disk

I would like any help in the situation bellow:
I've lost the system disk(Win2K), there was a database(8.1.6) installed and I've lost the parameter file. Now I reinstalled Win2K, Oracle 8.16 and I have 1 copy of the control file, 1 copy of each redolog file and of each datafile. The database wasn't in the default path and I don't remember the letter of the drive in which the datafiles were. If I recreate the parameter file pointing to the actual location of the control file, I think the controlfile will point to a unknown path to try to open the redos and datafiles. Can I read the controlfile contents, so I can change the drive assigned letter?
    What else should I do?

    CREATE CONTROLFILE
    Caution:
Oracle recommends that you perform a full backup of all files in the database before using this statement. For more information, see Oracle9i User-Managed Backup and Recovery Guide.
    Purpose
Use the CREATE CONTROLFILE statement to re-create a control file in one of the following cases:
All copies of your existing control files have been lost through media failure.
You want to change the name of the database.
You want to change the maximum number of redo log file groups, redo log file members, archived redo log files, datafiles, or instances that can concurrently have the database mounted and open.
    Note:
If it is necessary to use the CREATE CONTROLFILE statement, do not include in the DATAFILE clause any datafiles in temporary or read-only tablespaces. You can add these types of files to the database later.
An alternative to the CREATE CONTROLFILE statement is ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE, which generates a SQL script in the trace file to re-create the controlfile. If your database contains any read-only or temporary tablespaces, that SQL script will also contain all the necessary SQL statements to add those files back into the database.
    Example
    Creating a Controlfile: Example
This statement re-creates a control file. In this statement, database demo was created with the WE8DEC character set. The example uses the word path where you would normally insert the path on your system to the appropriate Oracle directories.

  • Operating system disk help

My iMac came with the operating system already installed. Is it possible to order the disk online as well?

If your iMac came with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, it would have come with the disks. Examine the items that came in the package and you should find them. If you no longer have the disks, having accidentally thrown them away, call Apple support and they can sell you a new set for a reasonable fee.
If your iMac came with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion or later, then Apple no longer supplies the disks. Instead they included the base files on a recovery partition, or you can use Internet recovery. See:

  • Xserve G4 (slot loading) not booting from a system disk - HELP!

I've read through the support and learned that when booting from a disk that the Xserve wants to load resources into the ram, therefore taking a long time to boot.
I waited over 40 minutes and still the Xserve did not boot up.
Was I too impatient? Should I have waited longer? How long? Or can I bypass this?
I need to repair my hard drive but because of this issue haven't been able to touch the drive.
    Thank you for your help.

Hello pkchoo, and welcome to the Appleboards,
Forty minutes sounds like too long to wait for even a G4 from a CD drive but I've never booted one that way personally. If the internal drive is really dead that can sometimes hang booting from even a known good source. If you pop the drive in question does the machine boot then?
Other things you can try are booting from an external firewire drive or booting the Xserve into Target Disk mode and attaching another computer (like a notebook) to the firewire and checking the disk as an external drive. There should also be (I believe this is true for all Xserves) hardware evaluation and testing disks that you can use to see if the long boot time and troubles are perhaps more than just drive trouble.
    Good luck,
    =Tod

  • Opening the HDrive with Mac booted from System disk? Any help please?

Is it possible to open the HDrive and look/search for files inside it
while my Mac is started from manufacturer's system disk?
(It seems to me I can do just system reinstall and use dusk utilities but have no way to see what is in the HD)
I am a novice and any tip from experienced users is welcome!
    My MacBookPro has OSX 10.6

Thanks Kappy for this reply, which is my first glimpse in really hi tech things!
I started with opening Terminal and
    following line appeared :
    -bash-3.2#
next to it I entered as you told me:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
and clicked on return (here I don't know if it is right thing to do ) and got this :
usage: mount [-dfruvw] [-o options] [-t ufs | external_type] special node
    mount [-adfruvw] [-t ufs | external_type]
    mount [-afruvw] special | node
    followed by another new line:
    -bash-3.2#
( I tried to to type lines as accurately as possible because I can copy them in Terminal but have nowhere to paste them - the laptop in question works only when booted from CD.)
So, from this point I don't know how to proceed - where to enter the line you recomended: cp /Users/stephanie /Volumes/Backup/stephanie
and what are the exact steps to perform...
Also I don't quite understand what is "Home folder" -is it the administrator account folder which I named when installed the system for first time?
In my computer it is named "steph77"
Also some extra info that may assist you:
My external drive is named "LaCIE" and is plugged in the MacBook.
My internal hard drive to which I want access is named "MacHD" and my account
    steph77 is inside it.
Can you help me with the steps to accomplish my task?
It is my first time meeting with command line and am a bit lost but very determined to learn it!
Thanks in advance Kappy , waiting for your reply !
    Stephanie.

  • No system disk appears on the desktop. Help please.

No system disk appears on the desktop.
    Here all external drives.
    I rebootedholding the shift key.
I have checked the Finder / Preferences / General is selected to show the hard drives, also in Finder / Preferences / Sidebar is selected.
I have opened the Disk Utility application and if you see the system disk, I have told you to check and tells me that the disk has no problems.
Otherwise the iMac works perfectly, but Safari, which is all I have used since the problem besides Disk Utility sometimes gets stuck, and has trouble reconnecting.
    Help, please.

Suddenly disappeared, which means that something is wrong with the computer.
No, the sidebar does not appear.
Thanks for the reply. Greetings from Valencia, Spain

  • I have installed new hard drive to iMac intel 2007 model and all I get on the screen is a grey question mark, tried system disk and now that's stuck in drive and just spinning around, any help please

Sorry put all question on subject line. As I said fitted new hard drive, but all I get is a folder with a flashing grey question mark. Tried system disk but that is now just spinning around in DVD drive and I can't get it out. Any help with these problems would help

Sounds like the new drive is not being recognized. Could be it's a SATA3 drive with a 6Gb/s transfer rate and needs to be jumpered down to 3. But if the 2007 is 1.5, it may not work at all, even if jumpered down. Other possibility is a not properly secured cable or a cable that's come loose from the logic board.
What is the model of the 2007 Mac? What's the new drive? Did you do the installation or was it done by a shop?
You can find your model here. Look next to Standard Hard Drive:

You can go strait to SL, all you need is a retail SL DVD available from Apple for $20. The US online store has them at:

  • I need to reinstall the system software on my older iMac. I have lost the system disks, though... so now what? It had 10.4.

I need to reinstall the system software on my older iMac. I have lost the system disks, though... so now what? It had 10.4. We moved, and I have looked everywhere. Am I doomed to find a way to buy it? Can taking it into the Apple Store fix it? Will it be expensive THERE? I've already saved all of the files I want off of it.... I just need it to work now.

You've lost me on why you need to reinstall Tiger, when you already have all the files you wanted (which means Tiger worked perfectly fine). If you want to upgrade to Leopard, that's a different issue: your Mac needs to meet the minimum system requirements for that, which you can easily determine.
If you just want to get a replacement set of Tiger install discs, you can try calling AppleCare and see if they're able to send you a replacement set, and if not, you'll have to buy a new set yourself. You can get them on eBay, Craigslist, and HardCore Mac (http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/), although they sell it for ridiculous prices.

  • Lost System Install Disks

I've had a run of bad luck recently. First, I dropped my iBook, which made it junk. I had nothing backed up, but I was very fortunate (OK, so there is some good luck in this story too) and my hard drive was OK, so I was able to move all my stuff onto a new (well, certified reconditioned) MacBook. I was really excited to have a new computer and I vowed to be careful, make backups, etc. So far so good.
But now, I realize that I have no idea what I did with the system disks that came with it. I have this awful idea that I tossed them out along with the packaging when I was doing a whirlwind cleaning prior to having visitors earlier this week. I'm pretty upset about this, obviously.
So, my question is, does anyone know if Apple will replace a set of lost MacBook disks, and if so, what they charge? I can't believe I've managed to screw this up already... (sigh)

  • Help -- System disk won't mount

    Hi folks,
My mini: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz, ID Macmini4,1
    System: 10.6.8
I need to restore my iCal. It's broken: won't give me recurring event alarms. I'm trying to run my System Disk and it won't mount, the machine just rejects it. Same with the Applications Disk that came with it.
The System Disk is 10.6.3 and the machine is now running the fully Updated version.
Help, please, this a business computer and I need iCal back.
    Thanks,
    Eric

Run the combo 10.6.8 update.  If that doesn't work, get your PRAM battery replaced. If that doesn't work, get your optical drive cleaned and see if the disc inserts then.  If that doesn't work, but other discs do work, then I would call AppleCare to get replacement original discs.  If they don't work, then I would have get an external DVD drive from http://www.macsales.com/ and see if the disc will work from them.  If that dosn't work, bring it in for service to find out what is wrong with it.

  • Help with software RAID on system disk

I've been trying to get my OS system disk mirrored using diskutil's software RAID (my server has 2 internal 80GB drives). I did what homework I could and here's where I'm stuck. I'm running 10.4.3.
    n506:~ root# uname -a
    Darwin n506.local 8.3.0 Darwin Kernel Version 8.3.0: Mon Oct 3 20:04:04 PDT 2005; root:xnu-792.6.22.obj~2/RELEASE_PPC Power Macintosh powerpc
    n506:~ root#
According to my research, I needed to boot from an OS disk other than the one I want to mirror, so I installed a second instance of OS X on my second drive, booted on that and ran diskutil enableRAID against the system drive I want to protect. This appeared to work. A new disk device was added (the RAID device) with its only component being the disk I ran enable RAID on. Then I booted from that disk. Here's the problem.
When I run diskutil addToRAID to add the second disk to the raid group, the command does partition the disk the same way the primary is partitioned (according to diskutil list), but the command always fails with this error:
    n506:~ root# diskutil addToRAID member disk0 disk2
2006-05-27 23:49:50.012 DiskManagementTool[362] AppleRAIDUpdateSet failed to modify the set (null)
There was an error adding the disk to the RAID (-9960)
    n506:~ root#
    The system log shows this:
    n506:~ root# tail -1 /var/log/system.log
    May 27 23:49:50 n506 kernel[0]: AppleRAIDMember::readRAIDHeader: failed, no header signature present on disk0s4.
    n506:~ root#
[NOTE: I should add here that, for reasons unknown to me, my system created /dev/disk0 from the drive in the second bay, and /dev/disk1 from the drive in the first bay (the primary disk I'm trying to mirror). I have no idea why OS X set up the devices like that, but I haven't really worried about it]
I've done what research I could and have found no information on this problem. I've tried zero-ing the second disk and rerunning the command (along with rebooting), but I always seem to get this error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been at it for days now and I'm really frustrated.
