Lost tab close buttons on tabs

I have lost the buttons (usually invisible til moused over) on individual tabs that allow closing the tab, when clicked on.  Now I have to right click and chose 'close tab'.  Rather unhandy.  How can I get the buttons back?  Thanks.

  • Safari 5.1.2 Tab Close Button on Different Sides in Windows

    I'm not sure if this is unique to my computer(s), but I've noticed that the tab close button is on different sides in the Mac & Windows versions of Safari. On my Mac, the close button is on the Left-Hand side with the tab text centered on the tab. On my Windows, the close button is on the Right-hand side with the tab text justified to the left.
    Why the difference in UI? I do quite a bit of browsing on both computers and I find that I'm constantly having to try to remember where I am to determine where the stupid close button is.
    I've looked around in both the Mac & Windows versions and I can't find an option that specifies where the button is show and whether the text is justified or not.

    OK, here's what I'm talking about. This is a screen capture of a tab from the Macintosh version of Safari:
    Notice how the "X" to close the tab is on the left-hand side and the text of the tab is centered on the width of the tab.
    Here is a screenshot of the Windows version of Safari:
    You can see how the tab is much smaller for one, but also how the text is justified to the left with the "X" to close the tab appearing on the right side of the tab instead of the left.
    I don't really prefer one over the other (ie. left or right side), I just wondered if there's some setting to make them act the same way on both so that I don't have to constantly remember what OS I'm on in order to remember where the darn "X" is to close the tab.

  • Close button on tabs have stopped appearing

    When you hover over the title of a tab the close button should appear. This feature now longer works so I am having to right click the tab and then select the "close tab" option.
    Any idea how I can get the close button to reappear?
    Many thanks in anticipation of an answer!

  • Since upgrading to 4.0 and now 5.0 tabs do not have tab close buttons and I must use CNTL-W to close open tabs, what's the problem?

    Since upgrading to Firefox 4.0 the close tab button, usually in the upper right corner of the tab has been missing. I have just recently upgraded automatically to 5.0 and the tab close 'X' button is still missing from all open tabs. The only way to close a tab is to click on it and use CNTL-W to close out the tab.

    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
    If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
    In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in <u>[[Safe mode]]</u>:
    * Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

  • "Close" button on tab minimizes FF4?

    When there are enough tabs open, the last tab covered over the "Min", "Max", "Close" buttons for FF4; and clicking the "Close" button on that last tab minimizes FF4 instead of closing the tab out! Bug?

    Set the pref browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab to false on the about:config page to prevent closing the last tab from closing the browser and make a close button appear if only one tab is open.
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />

  • Integrate a close button with tabbed pane?

    I like FireFox and I like using parts of its design concepts. How do I put a close button on the right corner of a tab using swing? Maybe I need a "cross" image? Maybe I just put an "X" character there?
    I tried tabProcessToBeClosed.close() or tabProcessToBeClosed.exit(), but it does not close the tab. Is there any other ways?

    I found the following to be extremely useful for constructing a tabbed pane with or without a close button.

  • In Lion, sometimes clicking on close button or tabs doesn't respond as if the buttons aren't there, i have to move the cursor away and move back to make them work again, anyone can help me?

    I'm not sure if anyone had run into this issue. Clicking the same place on the display sevral times will cause the click to stop working. For example, if i open safari and click on the Show Reading List button, it will work the first time i click it, but stop responding to my command as i click more, as if the button is not there, i have to move away the cursor and click somewhere else and move back to click the button to make it work again. And it happened everywhere, not just the show reading list button. The scrolling and moving are normal.
    In fact, I have my trackpad replaced in an apple store for this issue but it turned out this is not a hardware problem, and it is not only my problem. Ironically, i found the same issue on several of the demo Macs inside the apple store. So anyone can help me here? Thanks.

    Hi manni394, what version of Firefox are you running now?
    Firefox 22 has a new way of setting the default zoom level: it is based on your Windows font size setting. So, if you set Windows fonts to 125% (enlarged 25%), your Firefox pages also will be enlarged 25%. On pages that do not adjust their layout, you may get a horizontal scroll bar.
    To reduce the zoom on a page, hold Ctrl and tap the - key (the one on the numeric keypad or the one on the number row of the keyboard). The zoom should be reduced for each tap.
    If you want to globally adjust your zoom level to be lower, you can use either of these add-ons:
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-fullzoom-level/ Default FullZoom Level]
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/nosquint/ NoSquint]
    If you already have one of those add-ons, check the default/global zoom level in case it needs to be adjusted.

  • How to restrict closing the tab in tabpane after clicking the close button.

    Hi all,
    Greetings.
    I am implementing a TabPane with different 'user form's in each Tab. And all the tabs are *'closable'*.
    If the user enters some data in the form, and tries to close the tab without saving the form , i need to show a confirm dialogue box that the user should go ahead or not.
    If he clicks cancel, the tab should not close.
    But currently i am searching for a method something like 'setOnClosing' method for tab.
    There is only tab.setOnClosed() method, which will call the event after closing the tab.
    Some thing the code is like below.
    tab.setOnClosed(new EventHandler<javafx.event.Event>() {
         @Override
         public void handle(javafx.event.Event e) {
            // TODO: Actions to be taken on close of tab.
               // Logic to show the confirm dialouge box.
               //  if YES - close the tab
               //  if NO - don't close the tab.
    });But my logic is executing after closing the tab. (ofcourse, as it is on setOnClosed() ;) ). Can anyone tell me how to get control before closing the tab ?
    Thanks in Advance.
    Sai Pradeep Dandem.

    Hi All,
    Finally I managed to get the handler before closing the tab pane. :)
    Though this is a bit weird work around, my requirement is fulfilled at-least.
    Let me explain the workaround I did.
    Tab tab = new Tab(title);
    tab.setClosable(false); // This line of code  makes sure that the “default” close button of the tab is not appeared.
    setClosableButton(tab);Then I am setting the custom close button as a graphic to the label ( Title of the tab), and aligning that graphic position to make an effect, that it is rendered exactly at the position of “Close” button.
    From this Custom Close Button, I am handling the events and if confirmed I am closing the tab manually, by calling the closeTab() method in the TabPaneBehavior class.
    Below is the code that is implemented as per the above logic.
          * Method to set the custom Closable Button to the given tab.
          * @param tab - Tab
         private void setClosableButton(final Tab tab,final boolean closeCheck){
              final StackPane closeBtn = new StackPane(){
                   @Override
                   protected void layoutChildren() {
                        super.layoutChildren();
                        // Setting the orientation of graphic(button) to the right side.
                        ((Label)((LabelSkin)getParent()).getSkinnable()).setStyle("-fx-content-display:right;");
              closeBtn.getStyleClass().setAll(new String[] { "tab-close-button" });
              closeBtn.setStyle("-fx-cursor:hand;");
              closeBtn.setPadding(new Insets(0,7,0,7));
              closeBtn.visibleProperty().bind(tab.selectedProperty());
              final EventHandler<ActionEvent> closeEvent = new EventHandler<ActionEvent>() {
                   @Override
                   public void handle(ActionEvent paramT) {
                        ((TabPaneSkin)TabPaneComponent.this.getSkin()).getBehavior().closeTab(tab);
              // Handler for the close button.
              closeBtn.setOnMouseReleased(new EventHandler<MouseEvent>() {
                   @Override
                   public void handle(MouseEvent paramT) {
                        // My logic to handle the close event or not.
                                    if( logic satisfied){
                             closeEvent.handle(null);
                                    }else{
                                           // Dont close the tab.
              // Showing the close button if the tab is selected.
              tab.selectedProperty().addListener(new ChangeListener<Boolean>() {
                   @Override
                   public void changed(ObservableValue<? extends Boolean> paramObservableValue,Boolean paramT1, Boolean isSelected) {
                        if(isSelected){
                             tab.setGraphic(closeBtn);
                        }else{
                             tab.setGraphic(null);
         }There are some drawbacks in the above code. In practice, it is suggested not to use the classes (*LabelSkin* & TabPaneSkin) that are in com.sun.javafx package. But I couldn’t get a better solution other than using those classes. And another one is I could'nt set the actual graphic for tab, as i am already using that graphic property to show the close button.
    I would like to thank Narayan, for giving some inputs which has helped me to think and get the above solution. :)

  • I would like to have only 1 Tab close at a time instead of 2 each time when I have multiple links in use.

    I have gone to about:config to browser.tabs.close buttons. They allow digits of 0 thru 3. I have tried all the numbers.
    0 shuts down 3 or more tabs at once, and 1,2, 3 all close two tabs at a time.
    How do I change back to 1 tab being closed at a time?

    hello, the preference you have mentioned doesn't control how many tabs are closed at one time - it should always be only one tab at a time when you click on the close button. if this isn't working as intended, you could try to replicate this behaviour when you launch firefox in safe mode once. if it is not happening there, maybe an addon is interfering ...

  • Firefox 29.0.1 tab "x" close button no displaying on any tabs

    Hi I just upgraded to version 29. Unfortunately my tabs have lost the x close button on the tab. I can click where it should be to close them but I would prefer to just have it displayed.
    I have reset firefox as well as going through my ad ons nothing has helped
    any ideas?

    Hello,
    Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
    '''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
    #Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
    #After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
    #Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    #*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    #*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
    #Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    ##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    ##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
    More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?esab=a&s=troubleshooting&r=3&as=s#w_5-reinstall-firefox here].
    <b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
    Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Firefox frequently freezes. I can't click on anything (tabs, menu buttons, bookmarks, etc.) The only button that works is the upper right close button which when clicked will ask me if I want to "save & quit." Then I have to restart. Help fixing this?

    Frequently when I use Firefox it will all of a sudden freeze. It no longer will accept any user input from the keyboard or mouse. I cannot click on any of the open tabbed pages I have or on my bookmarks or any of the menu buttons. Nothing works. When it happens if it is loading a page it will just freeze in the middle of loading it. I've tried to see if the freezes are caused when it loads certain types of content (java, flash, etc...) but there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when it happens or with what types of pages. I cannot find a pattern. The ONLY button that works is the close button in the upper right hand corner (X). I can click on that and then Firefox will prompt me with it's regular message asking me if I want to save and quit, quit, or cancel. I'll hit save and quit and then reopen Firefox. It opens my tabs and if I was in the middle of a post it generally will still remember the text I've typed (except Facebook!).
    It's beginning to drive me nuts and I'm really hoping to find a fix to this.

    You will also notice that your shift key will be emulated. Meaning that keys you will try to press will press but they will act like you are pressing the shift key when you are doing them.
    Try this, minimize the firefox window by pressing the tab on your taskbar. After doing that maximize it again. You will magically be able to click any link on your page. When you navigate to a new page however, the entire situation will start all over. My only remedy is rebooting and hoping it doesn't happen again soon.

  • Firefox 4 Beta (v9,10&11) opens on my PC (Win 7) and creates tabs but only the close button works I cannot click on any tabs or content in the "active" tab?

    It looks like Firefox has started ok, all the tabs are populated, but nothing can be accessed by clicking except the Close button and the right hand scroll bar... it is frustrating. Firefox 3 works fine still.

  • JTabbedPane with one close button for all tabs

    Hello,
    there have several solutions been posted for JTabbedPane subclasses that provide tabs with icons working as close buttons on each tab. I think this is not user friendly because the user can hit the close button accidentally when selecting a tab. And a "really close?" dialog is clumsy.
    Therefore I prefer the Netscape browser style: There's only one close button rightmost of the tabs that closes the selected tab. But I don't have an idea how to achieve this.
    Does anyone have a solution or an idea? Thanks in advance for help.

    This solution has been posted several times and is not what I wanted. But I rewrote the thing so that
    - the close buttons are on the right hand side of each tab so that it is conformant with Eclipse style, and
    - the close buttons work only with a left click (see code below).
    I just wonder how I can move the text a little bit to the left so that the appearence is a bit more balanced. Can someone help, please?

  • I lost the close tab under File, how can i get it back

    if i don't have the close tab under File, i have to exit totally out of firefox which i don't want to do. How can I get the close button back?

    Hi,
    Please try pressing '''Alt''' + '''F''' on the keyboard. This brings out the full '''File''' menu. You can also try to close a tab by pressing the middle button of the mouse when the mouse pointer is over a tab, or clicking on the '''x''' on the right edge of a tab.
