Lost tags in catalog conversion

In a catalog conversion from PsE 6 to PsE 10 all tags have lost their connections to the actual files: What have I done wrong and how can I solve this issue?

Which tags? Can you please explain a bit more?
Are the tags imported correctly? You mean any search you make with tags shows you empty results?
Thanks

  • Will Photoshop Album 3.2 process all tags and catalogs from v2.0?

I want to upgrade to Photoshop Album 3.2 but the last time I tried that a year ago I could not figure out how to move my tags and catalogs. Did I do something wrong or has this been fixed?

You can upgrade from Photoshop album 3.2 to Elements 11 successfully. No information gets lost in conversion process.

  • Catalog Conversion Problem

I have been trying to convert a photo catalog from Photoshop Album 2 to Photoshop Elements 9.  The PSA is on an XP system and the PSE 9 is on Windows 7.   The backup and restore both go fine.  The conversion begins and stops right at 27% every time.  I get an error telling me to repiar with original software.  I've tried just about everything I know and have seen on the blogs with no success.  I removed any photo creations from the catalog and that did not help.  The catalog contains a few thousand photos that are really well organized by my 80 year old mother and I'm petrified she will lose them. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.  Neither product is supported any longer by Adobe.

The catalog conversion process is quite buggy, and PSE 6 and later have serious bugs in handling drives.  As a first step in troubleshooting, download and run the utility psedbtool:

Copy and paste the output here -- come to the Web to post your reply, rather than using email, since the Adobe forum software will truncate your reply.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 catalog conversion solution

The Photoshop Elements 11 Organizer failed to convert my Photoshop Elements 6 catalog until I ran the PSE11 Organizer under the built-in Windows 7 Administrator account. I did not find this solution mentioned during my efforts to solve this installation problem. It was not a suggestion I found in Adobe's help files dealing with catalog conversion. So here is a summary for others with this problem.
I installed Photoshop Elements 11 on my Dell XPS 9000 running Windows 7 Pro x64. I retained my PSE6 installation. I have nearly 20,000 cataloged images in my PSE6 catalog.
Problems began when the PSE11 Organizer failed to convert my PSE6 catalog to the new PSE11 format. The process seemed to run to completion, but then an error message said the conversion had failed. The suggestion was to repair and optimize the PSE6 catalog using PSE6, then try converting again. Conversion to PSE11 still failed. I spent a few hours searching for suggestions and solutions and tried each of them without success.
I then found one suggestion that the problem might involve permissions. The suggestion was to right click PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe in its installation folder (which on my computer is at at D:\Photo\Elements 11 Organizer) and run Organizer as an administrator. This also failed. However it did get me thinking about permissions.
Even though my personal account on my computer is an administrator account, I logged off my personal account and logged on to my computer's built-in Administrator account that comes with Windows 7. I don't think I've used that account for any other purpose since I set up this computer 3 years ago.
I then ran the PSE11 Elements Organizer using the Administrator account and the catalog conversion ran to completion and all seemed correct.
However, when I went to the folder where I kept my PSE6 catalog (G:\0-PSElementsCatalog\FamilyPhotos-6), the new PSE11 catalog was not there. Instead, PSE11 had put the converted catalog in the (absolutely awful) default location at C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\FamilyPhotos-6). Using the PSE11 Organizer, I renamed the catalog to G:\0-PSElementsCatalog\FamilyPhotos-11(ConvertedFrom6). I then used PSE11 Organizer to move the converted catalog to my preferred location on my G: drive.
    All is now well.
Why did I have to use the built-in Administrator account to do the catalog conversion? What permissions does it have that my personal account (also an Administrator) does not have? Some years ago I encountered a similar problem that involved permissions on a registry key, not permissions on files or folders. Perhaps someone at Adobe can enlighten us.

    One thing puzzles me:

I don't understand why running the exe from the installation folder would have worked.
I would have simply tried to run that exe from its real location :
Sorry, I can't help you more about permissions...

In that process I lost my LR4 catalogs I was able to redownload the program but the catalogs are not there and not all of those pictures are on my external hard drive because same said teen decided they were going to borrow my external hard drive without telling me and "made room" on it. Is there a way to recover my catalogs? Please tell me there is because I was in the middle of working on a session when I had to wipe my drive and I would REALLY like to not have to go back and reshoot it. Any help would be wonderful!

It depends on how you wiped your drive.  Depending on how you did it, only the directory was erased and the data can be found with drive recovery software.  Some are free, although there is a small charge for most of them (~$30).  You can usually download a trial version that shows if it will work and you have to pay to be able to save the found files.  Use Google to search for the software.  Different programs work differently and can find different things.
    Good luck.

  • I D/L'd a trial version of LR 5 and lost all my catalog and collections in LR 4. What can I do to get them back?

Yesterday I D/L'd a trial version of LR 5.6 and during installation it seemed to be copying my catalog from my LR 4.4.  Now nearly all of my catalog and all my collections in LR 4 have disappeared.  What has happened to them andhow do I get them back.  The original photos seem to still be available in the myphotos directory on the computer, but without any of my lightroom editing.

Thank you so much!  I was freaking out that I had lost the whole
catalog and all my collections.  It would have been good if Adobe
support had been able to point me in the right direction with this
advice. They basically shrugged their shoulders and said tough
    luck!  I am not impressed!
    Thanks again, Anne

  • Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 to Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 Organizer catalog conversion

I'm having trouble converting Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 catalog to Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 Organizer.  I get a Conversion Failed error which tells me to repair with the program that created it.  I have tried several things including deleting all .avi files from the catalog, deleting references to missing files and backing up then trying to convert from an external HD.  I'm running Vista Home Premium on a HP laptop.  The Organizer optimize and repair don't seem to help in this case.
Does anyone have any history with this or advice?

Please refer to following KB article which deals with catalog conversion failures:-

  • PSE10 Catalog Conversion from Windows XP to Windows 7-64

    Hi,
I have a catalog conversion issue when moving from Windows XP to Windows 7-64 while at the same time upgrading from PSE8 to PSE10.
All my photos on the Windows XP machine were in the following folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Pictures
Files were transfered across the network using Windows Easy Transfer to the new computer. I then installed PSE8 and was able to see my photo folders in the Organizer Folder View at the path listed above.
After installing PSE10 the location of my photo files remain in the same folder but are not accessible through Folder View in the Organizer.  I can see all the photos in Date View.
In other words, the PSE10 folder view doesn't show the old "Documents and Settings" path under Computer\C: even if I set the View to show Hidden files.  It does, however, show the entire folder path under "C:\Users\My Name\Pictures" but none of the folders are marked as being included in the Organizer.
There seems to be a Windows alias between "C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Pictures"   and   "C:\Users\My Name\Pictures"   but the Catalog is not picking it up.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi,
You just hit on something there.  After opening the timeline I clicked on one of the bars and Voila! a group of folders appeared in the folder view containing all of my photo folders.  Seems there was a "Documents and Settings" folder INSIDE the  Pictures folder at the same level as all the individual photo folders.
Strange thing...drilling down into the "my pictures" folders ALL folders are marked as having photos in the organizer even though many are not part of the database.
    So, here's the path:
    C:\Users\Paul Valentine\Pictures\Documents and Settings\Paul Valentine\My Documents\My Pictures\
To add insult to injury, every time you click on the "+" sign to expand a folder, PSE10 decides you want to go all the way back to the top of the folder list so you then have to navigate back to the folder you just expanded.  That's a real pain.
So, is there any good way to get things moved "back" to the proper location?
BTW, Thanks for all the great help...and Ken I might just have to try the repair technique if I continue to hit the brick wall...
    Paul

  • Why did adobe photoshop elements 13 stop catalog conversion of elements 12?

If you open the Organizer and go to Edit>Preferences>Camera or Card Reader, do you have Auto Launch Adobe Photo Downloader on Device Connect checked?
Try checking that if you don't.

  • How do I move the tags and catalogs from old Photoshop Elements on old computer to new computer?

I am trying to move my Photoshop Elements information to a new computer.  I have gotten the software installed, and the picture files moved over, but the tags and catalogs are not showing up on the new computer.  From looking online, it looks like there is a way to attach that information to the files on the old computer before transferring them over.  Ugh!  Hindsight!  Having already transferred over 35,000 jpg files to my new computer, is there any other way to move that information over without deleting all those files on my new computer and starting from scratch?

Even if you have the same folder structure, the organizer will find that the internal serial number of the drive is different and show all files as missing; you'll need to reconnect. That's why the backup and restore method is better. It also recognizes the need to upgrade (convert) the catalog format to the new version of Elements.
Use Backup, Restore to move catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later

  • I opened an older catalog and lost the original catalog with over 2 years of photos on it --Help

I opened an older catalog and lost the original catalog with over 2 years of photos on it (I never opened any other catalogs---I never chose to back it up either). it is not saved anywhere I can see as a catalog on my computer. If I didn't save it before opening the older catalog ( I don't specifically remember saving anything) would it be save in another format other than a catalog somewhere?

What happens if you choose File->Open Recent? Is the other catalog listed, and can you choose it? Simply switching to a different catalog should not cause the previous catalog to disappear.

  • Catalog Conversion on a New Computer & version 5 to 9

I backed up my catalog to an external hard in anticipation of installing version 9 on a new computer.  I was using vesrion 5.  The restore on my new computer did not go well.  I am unable to find many pictures because the catalog structure is different and I can't find many of the tags.
    Any help will be appreciated

    Thanx for asking.
I followed the approach in the online website.  Basically I made a backup
(file - backup catalog etc.) of my tags and catalogs and saved it to an
external hard drive.  I accessed the back up file after I installed version
10 using the restore catalog (file - restore etc.).  My initial attempt was
unsuccessful.  I uninstalled version 10 and reinstalled it.
Maybe I am using the word terminology.  When I say catalog I mean the
structure I set up to organize my pictures.  Tags might be a more correct
term.  My catalog/tags were recognized after my second attempt.  But the
pictures that I tagged got messed up.  For example, I had a tag titled "The
    Kids" and a sub-category titled M&T.  When I open the M&T sub-category I see
pictures that I placed in my bridges sub-category and I never linked M&T to
    bridges.
I hope this makes sense.  I appreciate your asking and taking the time to
    assist.

  • Lost Sort Tags On Format Conversion

When converting files to other formats with iTunes, the new files have empty sorting tags when the original had custom data.

    From my Links page...
    iTunes COM for Windows SDK
You'll need this if you want create or modify any scripts for iTunes for Windows. You need a free membership to Apple Developer Connections in order to get access to the file. Once you have your membership, log in and go to Downloads -> Developer Tools. The entry for iTunes COM for Windows SDK will be about 2/3 of the way down the page.
You're obviously not limited to VBScript, it just happens to be what I'm most familiar with. The tricky bits from the pseudocode I've outlined above are managing the conversion - essentially you need to ask iTunes to do something, then set up a loop which keeps checking to see if the task is finished - and recycling the old file. I already have some suitable code for each of those in ImportM3U and DeDuper respectively.
Coincidentally, I was half-intending to write such a script anyway, following a conversation a week ago. If you don't mind waiting a day or two I'll make good on that intention, or you can have the fun of doing it for yourself.

  • Lost tags

Hi, I have upgraded from PSE 6.0 to 12.  My catalog was stored on an external hard drive, this became necessary to move the photos from the laptop as it was running out of memory.  I have managed to import the catalog from the external hard drive into PSE 12 on my new laptop.  I have started to reconnect the photos in organiser to their location on the external hard drive.  I have lost all my tags, other than re-doing this manually, is there any way these can be restored.  There are 4,000 photos to be tagged.  I would be grateful for any advice.

I am assuming what was stored on the external drive was your media files, which I'll call your 'library'. What the Organizer calls a 'catalog' is just that : a list of those media files with their properties : location on your drive(s), full path, exif data from the camera, your tagging and rating... The catalog is physically a folder. You find its location in the Help menu, System info section. It is built around a database and many auxiliary files. By default, your catalog is on your main internal drive, not in the external hard drive.
If you install PSE12 on the same computer, all you have to do is to use the catalog manager in the file menu of the PSE12 organizer and click on the convert button. A dialog will show you a list of catalogs to convert. The conversion process will create a new catalog in the PSE12 format and recover all the information in the older catalog. That's all.
Even if I don't think it's your case, it's good to know that your PSE6 catalog (folder) could have been on your external drive if you had moved it there voluntarily. The convert feature works the same in that situation, you only have to browse to the location of the catalog in the external drive.
